Unfortunately, that's the problem with Christianity gaining so much power in the world. It is, at heart, a bigoted religion that will not allow for any other faith to even exist near them without either being destroyed or subjugated. "Heathens" are to be converted or killed, or made slaves. There is no compromise. And unfortunately Alfred is wrapped up in that religion so tightly that nothing will change for him. It's hard for him to go up against everything he's been taught for his entire life in order to see Uhtred as full-on human being, because to Christians, especially in this era, non-Christians are beasts. Pagan animals to be put under the yoke, humanized by conversion to Christianity, or slaughtered with no mercy.

I think Alfred DOES indeed see past his religious conflict with Uthred. Infact so much so that he is forcing Uthred's hand to ready his son as the next King. If we just set aside the toxicity (lack of communication) on Alfred's part, Alfred is infact hellbent on trusting his own son ,and in extension his own dream of England , with Uthred. That in a twisted way is the greatest compliment to Uthred's capabilities. Alfred might say he doesn't trust Uthred, but his almost stubborn insistence to make Uthred Edward's guide is a direct contradiction. Alfred's words always contradict his action or feelings for Uthred, at the core. Maybe because he has to maintain a certain facade as the "Christian" faith abiding king of Anglo-Saxons. In conclusion, i think Alfred is desperate because he knows Uthred has vowed to serve only him n after his death Uthred would be free to leave . So, he forces Uthred's hands to make him stay for Edward, by hook or by crook. Those two just need to sit down n TALK. And when they finally do...Oh Boy !!!!😭

Alfred is the one who betrayed Ultread. Ultread gave his all sacrificed his son to save Alfred's son, yet in return what does he get ? Discrimination, mistreatment, treating him lower than dirt. Alfread constantly discriminates people who are different from him. he uses ultread temper to opress him

This season is just fire, I am pretty sure the first 2 seasons were produced by the BBC and this is where NETFLIX took over. Uhtred's fever visions of his old friend Leofric were awesome, having him goading Uhtred to get up while telling him hard truths was just great. DESTINY IS ALL!

Season 2 was joint venture between the BBC and Netflix. After season 2 the BBC canceled the show, citing production costs and low ratings. Netflix then acquired the show after some negotiations.

@@mikesarndt One of the coolest things about the production is how they built actual buildings for the outdoor sets, not just the walls that faced the camera. iirc the only buildings in the outdoor sets that they didnt fully build were the roman era stone buildings. They filmed in Romania, which looks the part, but also the cost of labor is much lower letting them build whole villages of buildings with interiors and everything. The actors talked about how much easier it made getting into character because they felt like they were really stepping back in time on set.

The reason why Utred was seeing Leofric was a nightmare yes, but it is also because he is fighting against himself mentally. He feels like he's turning away from Wessex because Leofric was Wessex and was loyal to Alfred. Also Untreds men are mostly Saxon so a part of him feels guilty for making them traitors along with him.

Gotta Love how Alfred this season nearly undoes literally EVERYTHING he's built over the years with just one stupid decision to not reward Uhtred in anyway and allowed for him and his Wife to be publicly mocked in open court and you can see the utter look of shock and heartbreak on his face when Uhtred finally decides to turn traitor. It's like when. A friend takes advantage of you too many times and when you finally say enough is enough and leave they don't exactly get to cry because it was their own fault. Uhtred choosing to leave to go join sides with Ragnar effectively leaves Wessex utterly defenseless and open for the Danes to cut through it like a hot knife through butter. Alfred himself admits how much of a fuck up on his part this was. I also love how beocca is the ONLY man alive who can call Uhtred BOY and live because that is what he is to Beocca Uhtred is very much his son.

It's a matter of different beliefs but also of different values. Uhtred highly values freedom and acting true to himself. Alfred highly values loyalty and duty to one's people. Beyond Uhtred's heathenism and cultural differences, this is why Alfred can never trust Uhtred while also acknowledging that he needs Uhtred.

In Alfreds England gifts are bestowed from God and from the King, who is god's emissary. For Utred he believes he has earned everything he has and therefore owes nothing. That sort of value system is actually really subversive and Alfred kinda doesn't know what to do with it.

I really appreciate you guys reacting to this show, and I'm so happy you guys love it. It's definitely one of my top 10 favorite shows ever. I saw some comments where people felt entitled to basically berate you guys because you're not uploading enough/keeping up with how many uploads you had planned to originally keep up with. And I'm sorry that you guys have to deal with comments like that, especially from people who are your subs. I think a majority of subs are not like that, so that makes me glad. But to see even one sub talking like that is disappointing. It's just rude and puts negativity on something that is supposed to be fun, and a fun way for us all to connect and enjoy something together. And makes me wonder why they're even here... So I hope you both are able to just swipe and move on from little petty comments like that. You're doing awesome and there's no reason to rush, or let anyone make you feel like sh*t just because you're not able to upload enough extra reactions on Patreon, etc. There's no need to rush. I mean, even I myself have thought many times I'd love to see 2 reactions a week, I'm always anxious to get to the next reaction (they're so fun! lol). But that's just because the show is amazing, and your reactions are equally amazing. It just means you're doing an awesome job. It doesn't mean I require, or would even demand, more uploads. Such a good description of difference b/w Saxons and Danes. Could you imagine anyone judging Uhtred for this slap if it was some Dane talking shit about his wife? But on Saxon side, church and king are sacred and to be obeyed without questions. Danes are brutal, fearsome and at the same time there is more freedom in Danelaw. And Cnuth is another brilliant character in this season. He's red, he doesn't have some hipster's single braid on a skull, he knows not only how to fight on a battlefield, but how to throw insults at the table, which, as I understand, was a whole separate skill among Vikings.

The trouble with Alfred is that, as much as he may like Uhtred, as king, he can't be seen to forgive Uhtred things he would punish others for. All the things Alfred's punished him for, drawing a sword in his presence, raiding Cornwalum, killing a priest, Uhtred is not innocent, by law he should have been executed for all of them, and yet Alfred always found a different way to punish him. In his own mind, Alfred risked being seen as weak and a traitor to his faith, all to spare Uhtred. And yet Uhtred just keeps putting him in this situation again and again. I think after all those years, Alfred is getting pretty frustrated, and to him, Uhtred must seem pretty ungrateful. This is what he means when he says "I am allowing you to live".

I was watching this show in October season 4. Am from Zimbabwe and i only download these shows on my personal computer but it was stolen back on the 11th of October. Am a university undergraduate at the University of Zimbabwe and this is a huge loss for me. I have not told my parents yet because i am not sure how they are going to react. Fees are hiked and all so affording a new computer tough. Of course the devastation is on the education part but i will miss watching the shows also. grt reaction Nikki and steve. i finished Ozark, GOT, wandavision, falcon and the winter soldier, haunting of hill house and i was watching haunting of bly manor wen my laptop was stolen. I hope we can understand that Alfred had his reasons for wanting to make Uhtred swear an oath. Alfred is dying. He is afraid of leaving behind his son unprotected and his kingdom weak. Yes he was using the wrong method to manipulate the situation. But Alfred has the right to want Uhtred by his son's side. But he should have had a conversation with Uhtred instead of forcing him. He should have been more understanding. But Alfred is desperate. He has no idea when he will die. So he's pushing for Uhtred to be Edwards right hand... Also we see Alfred crying... I think it's safe to say that is Alfred's despair shown on screen. He wants Uhtred to help his son. But he also feels heartbroken because he knows this could all have been avoided. And lastly he's afraid. Afraid of what will happen to his son and the kingdom he leaves behind 😔

As much as I love Alfred, he took advantage of Uhtred and refused to reward his service. Always looking for a reason to squeeze his balls a little bit tighter. Alfred should have granted Uhtred 500 men to take back Bebbenburg. With a strong ally in Northumbria his precious England would be formed in his lifetime. Uhtred would be indebted to Alfred and if he felt respected, he'd bend the knee to Alfred voluntarily.

I really don't like how Uhtred just abandons his children in the show. The book has a far better explanation for what happens. The incident happens in London while Uhtred is commander of the garrison (and effectively co-leader of the city with the archbishop,) and the kids are already with Alfred's court for some legitimate reason (although I don't recall what that reason was.) Prior to summoning Uhtred, Alfred has the kids seized (in a chill way, like, "Hey kids, why don't you come over here and chill with Steapa and he's going to DoorDash some McDonald's for you, and you can watch whatever you want on Disney+.") Uhtred is then told that the kids are being held in protective custody (in other words, they're hostages,) pending his good behavior and cooperation. Uhtred decides that it's a no-win scenario and, despite being super mutherfucker pissed at Alfred, he still believes that he can trust Alfred to take good care of the children. He even rationalizes that they'll probably be better off in Alfred's care than in his own. Then he takes his warband and bounces from the city by ship. He never holds Alfred hostage or anything like that. I get why none of that would work in the show, but I still would have liked a better explanation than the nothing we were given.

The writing in this show is obviously good. But, the pacing is next level and they develop, introduce, and dispatch characters very well. If you're doing all that, you're going to have a good show/story. The first 3 seasons of this show are pure gold. The last 2 fell off but still enjoyable.

"This little shit" is King Alfred the Great, and I understand it was two years ago and it wasn't finished and obviously you guys aren't historian lovers and that's fine that's just how my life went obviously.. I loved the video and reaction! Though I'm sure now that you guys have finished it, aside from it being fictional. The ONLY GREAT King who ever was and will be of England was Alfred the Great. His legacy is why we sit in this democracy with our spoils. Sorry I'm American not even British but I am have Russian so Rus Viking is in my DNA and I am a warrior (elite amateur boxer turned pro @ 19) so my perceptive is a bit different. The real KING not "Monk" King Alfred the GREAT King of England" and to this day in history the only Great king of England. Uhtred had some balls in this movie ill give him that. Incredible genetics too the actor wow his body is literally built (prob PEDs) but insertions and I can see you are a warrior too Steven from the cauliflower ears but yeah perfect shoulder insertions to v taper athletic body. Perfectly build posterior chain. What an incredible casting and show.

This is Alfred the Great. He was an amazing leader. Not many kings are called the GREAT. I appreciate Alfred's long term vision. He was obsessed with unifying England. He knows deep in his heart & soul that Uhtred is his best friend. But that time period was so hard to trust people. People were stabbing each other in the back all the time. Best friends aren't always equals. He keeps going back to Uhtred because he knows that Uhtred will be honorable. Alfred & Brida suffer the same distrust issues.

If you think this episode is infuriating, oh boy you ain't seem nothing yet. This season had me fired up screaming at my TV like no other show before. I guess that's good writing to make the villains so detestable.

Afred just pushed Uthred too much in this episode. Uthred had been sooo patient all this time. If Uthred decided to go against Alfred, team up with Ragnar, and use the witch Skade's influence, they'll be unstoppable. Beocca and his wife Thyra, and other friends of Uthred's crew are the only ones saving Wessex with Æthelflæd saving Mercia. If it's only Afred and his family, maybe Uthred wouldn't care anymore. Alfred's got a real problem here.
