Constantin is such a great character in the show.

The island that Hild mentions twice is Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, which Ragnar Lothbrok and crew raided in episode 2 of Vikings, and where he met Athelstan. Lovely island, I spent several summer holidays there as a kid, and you can see Bamburgh Castle, as Bebbanburg is now called, from the coast.

Just a little trivia from books' Hild (no spoilers), remember that cross she gave Uhtred as a gift for protection, after rescuing him from the slave owner? In the books, Uhtred attaches her cross to the bottom of his sword, where it remains until the end of the story. This is brought up as little easter egg on season 4 (almost unoticeble, unfortunately), when Uhtred agrees to take care of Æthelstan for Edward. Right after the scene where the king asks him to take his child, there's a shot of Uhtred and little Æthelstan talking to each other. Æthelstan touches the bottom of his sword and quietly asks him "Is that a cross?" It happens very quickly, but I loved it. I love Hild in the show, she was given much more importance and relevance in Uhtred's life.

Funny you should mention Constantine wanting land, because old Northumbria reached up to Edinburgh. That's a lot of Uhtred's land in modern day Scotland!

I think it was a conscious choice by the actor to hold his hands that way, because it's a sure sign of being nervous, uncomfortable, etc. It's basically a visual sign that Aelswith was right, and he was afraid.

ah the battle for Bebbanburg begins. this show once again shows up much bigger shows like Game of thrones and Vikings in terms of both writing,story and epic battles with like a quarter of the budget. the battle for Bebbanburg was well and truly worth the wait. what this show does so much better than so many others is how well it hides it's plot armor, because yes Uhtred and his boys are plot armoured out the ass but it's not blatantly rampant or apparent like Jon Snow staring down hundreds of cavalrymen,dodging like 40 arrows,ripping and tearing his way through wave after wave of Bolton soldiers and then proceeds to survive getting trampled,or Daemon one man army Targaryen singlehandedly storming Normandy beach and effortlessly slaughtering the enemy commander ,or Ivar the cripple not being immediately turned into a pin cushion of arrows just because he looks scary. it always feels like Uhtred and his boys may not make it out of the situation alive despite being the era's equivalent of Navy seals. not to mention that this battle showcases that sieges are never as one sided as you think and that the Villians don't get the advantage through BS asspulls, if the Heroes have the crippling advantage then it gets used and their enemies are defeated and vice versa, the tide constantly turns in this battle and it's so well done. you also get a real understand of actual Battlelines and can somewhat see what is going on in this battle unlike so many other shows which just have 2 massive bulks of troops smashing against each other in an open field. i also really love how this episode shows us that Constantine isn't a bad guy. he's simply doing what he thinks is best for scotland, (such a shame that my country today is just a cesspit of failure) it really goes to show how complex the situation is when Aethelhelm's plan of Aelthwynn's marriage to Constantine could have actually had a positive outcome had it not been an idea born out of malicious ambition. even Aelthwynn seems to be somewhat onboard with the idea after he said that the marriage would be celibate. Constantine to me comes across like the Mirrior of Edward in the sense that he's the hero on the villains side and Edward is Villian on the heroes side

Don't forget that before Whitgar came back to Bebbanburg, the Scots had been raiding against Alfric for months. The forces of Bebbanburg were nearly depleted fighting off Scottish incursions. Bebbanburg is a massive fortress right on Constanine's border and he eyed it up for years.

“No he’s too young” remember he does have another son. The one who was born when Gisela died and we’ve never seen or heard of. Remember he already had lost his first son with the supposed sacrifice to save Edwards life in the swamps and Stiorra and young uthred were already born by then obviously. One part of the story I wish they hadn’t dropped especially with all of uthreds family this family that legacy stuff over the last two seasons

I do however wholeheartedly agree with you that Aelfwynn is stupid. I don’t understand how on earth Æthlflæd thought she could be the lady of Mercia. She was entirely to immature and selfish. Her selfishness and immaturity was the reason why she, Aelswyth, and Eadyth we initially captured, and even when Aelswyth and Eadith managed to free them all Aelfwynn still managed to get herself captured anyway. It’s still shitty she got Haesten killed when he was doing the right thing by trying to save her.

Nah. He was extremely smart, just motivated purely by self interest and self preservation. As he got older he found that his self interest laid in peace between Saxon and Dane. There’s a lot more can be said about him as symbolic of the gradual domestication of the Dane raiders.

Watching this episode for like the 5th time and I just realized that Uhtred’s plan never could’ve worked. Even if they managed to get in & rescue Aelfwynn…..how exactly would they get her out? The path was gone & no way she’s climbing down that mountain. Now I know what ultimately happens but that’s just something I thought of. Such a great show & Nikki & Steven are so much fun to watch. Uthred deserves so much, he gets everything taken from him, and he deals with so much. he's so strong mentally and physically. brida pissed me off after a while, i hated her when she got way too much into her head, and the revenge shit when she was doing way too much. i wish they made more seasons, but i can't wait for the movie to come out. plus my bf is watching the show with me even tho i've seen it, so it's fun rewatching it and i wish i could rewatch the show for the first time again, but this will do.

I'm looking forward to your final series climax for Uhtred. It is truly the best possible series ending ever. I kinda think the Sons of Anarchy is gonna be too dark for me, but I see you are doing Reacher, and I look forward to spending more time with you doing that. I'd like to recommend my favorite underestimated series (after TLK) and it's LONGMIRE. This series is about a couple of three or four years in a small Wyoming town enforcing the law with Sheriff Longmire. His wife has been killed the year before, and he'd like to do more than bring the parties responsible to his own brand of justice, if not the law's, but it's complicated. There are two or three tribal bands competing for casino money, his chief deputy is running for his job, and there's a hidden power structure in the county that corrupts his best efforts. It's better than the other faux modern western shows IMHO, better writing, acting too. Please put it on your list!

alfred and edward present very differently, Alfred was always very calm even in the toughest moments. Alfred also tends to make a lot of decisions based on religion, and he always put God ahead of himself, whereas God isn't really much of a factor with Edward. I think for that, how Alfred appears will vary depending on how the audience feels about religion

It’s possible, that maaaaybe Edward has been depicted in this show in this way to add extra drama? This video looks at how Edward might have been inaccurately depicted in season 4, so no spoilers for season 5 and don’t forget, King Edward is as a real historical figure and we kinda know that England is a real place today, so it must’ve gone kinda the way King Alfred wanted right? Whereas Uthred, cool as he is is the guy that’s just made up, apart from being loosely based on an Anglo-Saxon Earl of Northumbria called Uthred The Bold who wouldn’t be alive for about another 100 years. Edward is spoilt brat with a crown, ergo a very dangerous combination. Alfred telling him he will be king constantly led to hubris and an inability to listen to others, or too to many, exactly as his father did. "the Great" - my arse.

Aelfwynn is my most hated character of the whole TLK, she literally brings nothing positive by her presence, first she was sick, then she allowed herself to be captured by Aethelhelm's men TWICE and then finally she basically killed Haesten who had a great redemption arc Even Aelswith, Aethelwold and Brida had their moments of glory, she didn't

I am very disappointed that the writers of this show wrote Edward this way different from the King he was in real life. They always made Haesten look ugly in this show, season 5, he looked much better all cleaned up.

honestly i think this version of Edward is actually the way more interesting character considering that the "real life" Edward has alot of historical fluff that most likely greatly embellishes his deeds more so than they really were considering that alot of it reads like propaganda, i feel if they wrote edward to be "historically accurate" according to the documented texts he'd come across very mary sueish, i like how they made Edward a deeply flawed Anti-Villian who struggles being king unlike Alfred who seemed to be born for the role despite being a second born son.

Edward is the second most badly treated real character in the show. By accounts of the time he was noted to be no scholar, unlike his father, but still a good ruler and military leader. The worse treated is of course Athelred of Mercia, husband of Æthelflæd. By all accounts he was a good ruler and husband, and the worst that could be said for him was he was quite a bit older than his wife. When his health faded he was happy for his wife to rule in his name and to succeed him. But then I suppose a TV show has to have villains...

@@silgen we’ll never know how Aethelred treated his wife, especially since it was a time when something like 90% of women were treated badly. As for Edward, this is good storytelling actually. It’s believable that he’d have issues and we only see these characters on their off days, not during the years of peace and boring but good decisions.
