The movie reveals that he is a former Defense Intelligence agent (DIA). The second movie goes into more detail about the DIA. He's old enough to be living off of his pension, but DIA also get "danger pay" bonuses like any other military related profession. So, he probably has a massive fortune to live off of on top of his pension for all of the danger pay bonuses he collected over the years. Yet, he still lives modestly and efficiently like the soldier he will always be.

It's an amazing way of revealing who these characters are. Like you said, for Teddy, it shows he's used to intimidating people. He's a spooky dude. For Robert, he took a tactically advantageous position by meeting him at the head of the stairs. A regular Joe wouldn't do that and Teddy knew if Robert was the guy he's looking for, he killed 5 armed guys undetected. Teddy definitely knew and even said in the car, "Everything about him is wrong." Best scene in the movie.

He was willing to give $9,800 to buy the girl's freedom and only hurt people when they gave him no choice. But as mentioned...his demeanor is what made this movie. It seems you missed a really cool detail during Bob and Nikolai's last talk. When Nikolai asks Bob what he sees when looking at him, Bob tells the story of a troubled child taken in by a kind and empathetic man and given a chance at a life, only for the man and his wife to be murdered. He says he believes the child did it, fearing the man would one day decide he wasn't worth it and not wanting to find out. The implication is that the child in the story is Nikolai, and that Bob did his research on him (showing the connections and information he has access to). He then states that he gave the men he killed a chance and they made their decision, and he gives Nikolai the chance to make his. The men made the same mistake Nikolai made way back and now they're dead for it, and he's giving him the opportunity not to make that mistake again.

The Equalizer started as an action/crime drama series from the 1980a. The original Robert McCarll was a former British commando recruited to be a "problem solver" for British Intelligence. His specialty as an agent was making it look like an accident. When he retired, he started helping people who couldn't otherwise get help, offering to "equalize" the situation. The storylines in the show often dealt with civilians who were up against gang members, or the mafia, or corrupt cops, and so on.

That first verbal showdown between them is insane. They both know, yet neither one can say yet. Both are at the top of their game... Teddy just doesn't realize that his top game is WAY short. Straight admitting he was there that night throws him. Being reminded to leave his card throws him. He did good. Most wouldn't have caught those. LOVE this movie. The tension is incredible. And how he is protrayed to everyone else as calm, mild mannered, always helping anyone... and then his utterly brutal and rapid takedown of anyone who gets in the way of someone he wants to help... it's amazing. And the 2nd one really builds on it and gives some backstory to him. Also has some of the best scenes. I love that they highlight his observational skills. Notice everything all at once. Anything can be a weapon, use whatever you have at hand. Speed and overwhelming force. Fun fact, honey is great for disinfecting wounds. Has antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. Specific type though, not just any. So that was a really cool and accurate little scene. Also, honey never goes bad.

One of the best lines of the movie was when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' said "When you pray for the rain you've got to deal with the mud too" - I agree with you Nikki, "WORD". Next best line when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' tells 'Nicolai "Teddy" Itchenko' after interrupting his meal at the table in the restaurant about the promise he made to someone he loved very much that he wouldn't go back to being that person he wasn't proud of and proceeds to tell him "but for you I'm gonna make an exception" - SCARY when a man like 'The Equalizer' tells you those words, you better believe him! Robert McCall in the TV series was essentially MI6 (like 007), but Denzel's iteration was CIA or something like that, a field operative. Which is why he knows martial arts, weapons, etc. The reason he got out of the spy business was his late wife. Elena (played by "Hit Girl" herself, was the reason he got back in, the young man whose mother got burned out, was just the icing on the cake. That and the enforcer coming on the scene.

If you ever get the chance to see some of the behind the scenes about the fight coordination, it’s worth your time. It really demonstrates how military special ops weaponize observation, it’s not just about noticing things others don’t, they catalog, categorize and activate everything and everyone around them so they can be precision weapons with whatever is at hand. So much so, that they don’t feel they need to have or use traditional weapons and can predict outcomes at an exceptionally high percentage.
@TalkingHands308 Жыл бұрын
27:54 You were wondering what his past was. Notice when she says "I'm not at The Agency anymore." "The Agency" is basically jargon for those who work for the government and it means the CIA. Central Intelligence Agency, they all just say "The Agency." And when they say "Langley" they are talking about the headquarters in Langley, VA. So basically anytime you hear someone say "Langley" or "The Agency" they are talking about the CIA. So that would imply that Robert McCall was in the CIA with her. He was probably in their Special Activities Division, one of their Ground Branch operators. Those guys are basically like Navy SEALs but operating for the CIA.

I freaking love the Equalizer it's just really good Denzel did a fantastic job . i think the third one is gonna be this year can't wait i just love Denzel i think he did a great job with is facial expressions and his eyes on those movies cause you can see the remorse on his face and eyes of failing his promises and going back to his "old self" but for the great of good ...

I saw that movie when it came out and I loved it. Happy you picked up on this! Looking forward to your reaction to the second part. Have you seen "Book of Eli" (2010)? A dystopian endtime movie with Denzel and Garry Oldman, AMAZING! You will love it.

So happy you watched this movie, I hope you will watch the second movie too, Denzel Washington is such a good actor. The 3rd movie is coming out soon also, so excited for this.

I can't believe you guys haven't seen this movie in 2014 but I'm glad you guys reacted to it. I can't wait for your Equalizer 2 reaction. Antione Fuqua, who directed Training Day, also directed the Equalizer movies.

Obviously the sequel needs to be watched also but for just a really good bad-ass Denzel movie I would go with Man on Fire. More emotional involvement and it packs more of a punch.

Remember seeing this movie with my now Wife… Back in 2013 that December we got a screening of it. And I decided to review it… I’m surprised Sony never caught it and tried to take it down. But man my comments were on fire, You didn’t really see it your just saying this for views and BS like that. The movie turned out the exact same as I stated it would! 😂 Great reactions Guys! PS this movie came out half a year later in September of 2014, not bad for a 10 Month head start 😅

Such a great movie. I loved the tv show as well. Used to watch it with my grandma 🤣. It's his stillness that works so well. Every movement is planned. Ugh! Sooo good!

Denzel Washington coached his son in football in high school for a while and his son played division 1 football and briefly in the NFL and is now a respected actor in Hollywood.

Just FYI guys this was directed by Antoine Fuqua, he directed the Equalizer trilogy . The late Tony Scott directed Man on Fire.

Genial, impressive, versatile, creative and iconic. Denzel Washington admired Sidney Poitier so very much that he became the Poitier of our generation.

I enjoyed watching your reaction to this movie. I appreciate the fact that you commented and reacted to the various scenes, but didn’t talk over the dialogue, as well as not editing out a lot of the great scenes like many of the reactors do. Of course, I haven’t watched your other movie reaction yet. I think rather than reacting, many of them just enjoy hearing themselves talk. They are also laughing and reacting to scenes that the viewer can’t see, because they have edited those scenes out.

The movie is inspired by a television show back in 1985. Him responding to an online ad at the end is from the tv show where in a newspaper the Equalizer would place an ad saying 'Got a problem? Odd's against you?'

I LOVE your reactions! I have watched this reaction of the equalizer at least 4 times now. The interaction between the two of you and the way you select certain scenes and pause to comment is awesome. Thank you for that. I see far too many reactions where the reactor talks over all the good stuff. It seems they just like to hear themselves talk.

Yeah, the script that Denzel read and spoke in the movie was very well done and written by a smart person/smart people. Not sure how many people wrote this script. However, Denzel's performance was very well done, per usual. What really makes this movie stand out, part 2 also, is the fact that both have great scripts and awesome people to put those words on film and into action.

Robert is basically saying to all bad people to "walk away, repent or taste your own medicine" Metaphorically speaking of course
