There is a huge story about black Captain America in the comics. While Steve was in the ice Isaiah Bradley was part of an experiment that used black soldiers to create a new super serum. Isaiah was the only one to survive. After they used him they put him in prison/observation for 30 years. The young man at the door is Patriot who is a member of Young Avengers in the comics. It will be interesting if they go on with those story lines in the MCU.

I think it'd be really interesting to have a seconario where Eli (his grandson) gets shot and Isaiah does a blood transfusion where Eli gets powers because that's what happens in the comics, but with She-Hulk having the same exact backstory (gunshot with Banner blood transfusion) I'm not sure they'll go that route

The program that created Isaiah Bradley, also didn't produce the same level of results that produced Steve Rogers. I do believe that while a 'super soldier', he is still only at human maximums for all his physical traits (Not the superhuman levels that Rogers had). These new super soldiers seem to at that point as well.... so I'm curious as to which organization is responsible for their creation. I had heard the name before from the comics, but this was a deep dive I had to research a little when I heard his name in the episode. I had always wondered if there were any other 'super-soldier' attempts after the 40's experiments, aside from the Weapon-X program to enhance mutants, and whatever program produced the Russian ones like Omega Red.

@@Ugnutz Yeah, it's very possible they altered the character from the comics. The Marvel database has this guy only set at human maximums for all his stats. The super soldier serum that produced Cap was lost, and the Hydra version that produced Winter Soldier and Red Skull, I dont think was as effective. Bucky only went toe to toe with Steve because of his cybernetic enhancements. The experiments the Isaiah was part of were not as successful as the original.

Canonically, Isaiah was a part of the recreation attempt - a year after Steve got his powers and Dr. Erskine was killed. Only 5 soldiers survived the testing, but the rest eventually died leaving only Isaiah. The Gov. also executed the Commander of the Army camp they were stationed at as well as the remaining soldiers to keep what they were doing a secret. Isaiah was later captured by German forces after stealing a spare Cap uniform and heading out on a mission alone. When he was finally freed and returned home, he was imprisoned by the US Gov. for his stealing of the uniform to further cover up his existence.

One of the things that really got me about Bucky while he was talking with Isiah was how much compassion he had for him. Isiah suffered betrayal by the country he swore to defend. He was imprisoned and treated like a lab animal raising the shadow of the Tuskegee experiments, at least with me. His life was ruined. His is rightfully angry and bitter but at least Isiah still has his honor. What they did to him was despicable but at least he was still the same man. Bucky experienced torture also and they took the kind, protective man he was and made him into a monster. Something completely alien to his actual nature. Bucky was left in the end, living in isolation until Steve found him, with shame, guilt and horror at what he had done. He chose to be put into suspension in Wakanda than risk hurting anyone else. Yet despite his own suffering he still had compassion for Isiah. Pretty heartbreaking.

The moment for me when John Walker revealed his true nature was when he pulled a gun out on the top of the trucks in the fight scene. I know he didn't end up killing anyone, but the fact that his first instinct was to shoot someone comes across wrongly. Secondly "don't get in my way" is something a bully would say - something Steve Rogers notoriously fought against. I think they are treating the line really well when it comes to writing this character and I think the actor does a great job of pulling it off as well! Damn I love this new phase of Marvel! :D

I love the fact that this episode (or even this show in general) touches on some big issues like mental illness and racial bias. It honestly kinda surprised me how they handle it with such nuance, even in other areas that even the bad guys are not as bad as we think they are and the good guys are not that clean-cut themselves. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie clearly had a fucking blast filming this show. Isaiah is a bit younger than Bucky, since he said he met him during the Korean War and Bucky said last episode he's 106 years old, so Isaiah is probably around 90 or so in this show, plus he was never put in suspended animation like Bucky or Steve, so he aged in real time. In the comics he was part of a group of black soldiers the government experimented on trying to replicate the Captain America Super Soldier serum and one of the few that on whom it kind of worked and survived the experiments, so he was a special ops super soldier during the war and if I remember right he did briefly wear Cap's suit and carry his shield during at least one mission, but it was without official permission and he was jailed for that afterwards. I guess here in the show the reason why he was imprisoned is different, but he kind of was the first black Captain America, at least chronologically. So it seems the show will explore the theme of what it means to be Captain America much more deeply than I thought or expected. As for Walker, he is also from the comics and has been Steve's replacement as Cap at some points though he's more commonly known as the U.S.Agent (I guess a kind of anti-hero version of Cap), but his personality and motivations are not that similar to Steve's, so I guess we'll see how he develops in this show because as you said, though he seems to be honestly trying to live up to the mantle and wants to do his best, he's much more beholden to the government than Cap ever was, which will probably play into a similar theme as the one in Civil War regarding the choice between the letter of the law and the concepts behind the law itself.

Some people believe, which I am also inclined to believe is that, the fake cap and his partner are trying to track Bucky and Sam so that they can get the super serum and inject themselves. Hence they will become the bad guys of the season. It's also a thing that maybe this fake cap is already enhanced with the serum and it's not showing his true capabilities because he has some more sinister plan. I think we just saw how Walker becomes an antagonist. This whole episode set it up, then Bucky knocked it down. Walker is so concerned with living up to the Captain America mantle that he's likely going to become more and more unhinged as he keeps falling short, ending with him taking this new Super Soldier formula. The end will probably be Sam taking on the Captain America mantle with Bucky at his side, fighting Walker and leading to him becoming U.S.Agent. The outfit Walker wears as Captain America even resembles the U.S.Agent costume.

I remain continually surprised at how many people are saying they like John Walker, and this episode helped show that he’s a good guy. To me, this episode showed exactly why he will end up not being a good guy. He has *way* too much ego. He wants to be the big dog. He “says” he doesn’t want to replace Steve, but he introduced himself as Captain America- to Sam Wilson!!! And Steve never, never would have covertly hacked a colleague’s equipment to covertly track him. That’s exactly the crap he got pissed at Natasha and Fury for doing in Winter Soldier. And he may have saved his sidekick/friend’s life on the truck, but then they bro’d it up, and he acted like it was “so cool, man!” Which is not something Cap ever did- ever. In fact, that would have been so completely out of character. I re-watched the first Capt America movie this week for this show, and, to me, Walker is exactly like the hot-shot cocky guy the scientist specifically rejected to get the super soldier serum. And Walker clearly didn’t handle rejection well. He kept trying to get Bucky and Sam on his side...but not as people who could help. Not as co-equals. He wanted sidekicks to make him look good. And when they said no, he got pisses and gave them a warning. That is class-A entitlement that I think is going to lead him down a dark path. It’s also like...when a guy hits on you, you reject him, and then he gets nasty, which shows you that he’s dangerous. To me, this episode highlighted, albeit subtly, *exactly* why he should not have the shield. I came away absolutely grossed out by him.
@Bald_and_Brown
@Bald_and_Brown 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that Walker isn’t a very good guy, and I’m pretty sure they’re setting him up to be an antagonist soon. But just to play devil’s advocate, I don’t think him introducing himself as “Captain America” is an attempt to replace Steve. At this point in the Marvel timeline, “Captain America” seems less like an actual person and more like a title. Which is why Walker said “I’m just trying to be the best Captain America I can be”, he means he’s trying to live up to the title/position that was given to him.
@amandadougherty6615

I do get where you’re coming from, and I like that the writers do have material in here that make him sympathetic, but at the same time, he is so entitled about it. Bucky tells him just bc you have the shield doesn’t make you Capt. America, and his response isn’t understanding or like, yeah I’m trying to live up to it, it’s, yeah but I’ve done “the work.” Have you, though? Have you? But I do like how the show seems to deal with him in a complex way that lends itself like this to a devil’s advocate argument, for sure.
@KeithDCanada
@KeithDCanada 3 жыл бұрын
I know US Agent from the comics so I can see the justifications here.... but just based on what they showed us in the show, I'm not really seeing enough to be 'grossed out' by the guy. Bucky and Sam have been openly hostile towards him for no good reason. To them, no one will ever measure up to Steve as Captain America.... but they never gave him a chance at all. Out of the gate they refused to acknowledge him. As for using surveillance to track Falcon down... S.H.I.E.L.D has been doing that the entire time, it's not a new thing. As Walker said, "I'm not trying to be Steve Rogers, I'm just trying to be the best Captain America I can be"... and the whole boyscout routine was a Steve Rogers thing, and not necessarily a Captain America thing. Gotta separate the guy from the moniker. He's operating under S.H.I.E.L.D's parameters and is more than likely authorized to do things, like track agents in the field... and if Bucky/Sam aren't operating in an official capacity, then they are operating as vigilante's and thus warrant supervision from the government.
@amandadougherty6615
@amandadougherty6615 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is exactly what the government said of Steve when he went rogue for trying to protect Bucky when the government gave orders to shoot him on site....and then it turned out that Bucky was innocent. Which...was Steve’s point in not signing the accords. In fact, the government wanted War Machine to arrest Steve when he returned to fight Thanos in Infinity War. Not really a good plug for the government IMO. And as to being grossed out...they rejected Walker and Walker basically took that as if you’re not with me be warned. That just on a personal level drips of a guy getting angry and hostile when you reject his advances. It’s like...they don’t owe you anything. Girls don’t owe guys anything, even if they do buy you dinner. So for him to get like that...yeah no.
@KeithDCanada
@KeithDCanada 3 жыл бұрын
@@amandadougherty6615 But Bucky & Sam are not working for the government. They have no real authority to go to Germany and carry out an operation. S.H.I.E.L.D is the governing body in these matters that negotiates with the UN and other countries governments to enter their borders and operate on their soil. I'm not even sure how they are allowed to do that... they are US citizens and as far as I understand what Sam said later in the episode about not having all the rules and restrictions Walker does, that they seem to operate as free agents, or authorized vigilantes? Walker is the official new Captain America. His official job title gives him authority over the other two. Hell... Sam has government supplied tech that can see through walls and has military drones with lethal weapons on it.... he is not above the law, and if he is not working for the proper regulative authorities, then I would think some form of oversight would be assumed.

The Genealogy of the Super Soldier treatment is essentially this. The original formula was developed by Erskine which was given with unfortunate side effects first to Johan Schmidt (Red Skull) then with modifications to Steve Rogers. This is the most efficient formula and it is lost with the death of Erskine. The US, HYDRA, Soviets, and others use this work to experiment with variants of the formula some more successful than others. None of them are effecive 100% and most of the projects only yield one or two successes before being shut down. Winter Soldier is one of the successes of a formula done by HYDRA (The experiments when Barnes was held captive by HYDRA of which he is the only survivor) but his variant is implied to have less "something" than Steve but still be pretty close. Another variant was given to Isaiah Bradley during The Korean War which outside the MCU had significant drawbacks regarding his health and mental stability. Another Variant was given to the other Winter Soldier recruits in the Hydra Base in Siberia which we saw how that went down and they had to be kept on ice. I suspect that Black Widow is the subject of a mild variant as part of the Soviet espionage program and that medical procedure was more than just a tubal ligation. Emil Bronsky (The Abomination) was given a US variant with huge side effects then subjected to Gamma Therapy which mutated him further. Banner's gamma project was an attempt to build a supersoldier variant disguised as a medical program.

I think when Hydra turned Bucky into the Winter Soldier they would usually put him in some sort of cryo-suspension when he's not in use. That's why he's still alive and still looks young.

The new Cap may have some abilities (enhanced abilities) because he jumped out the helicopter on top of a moving truck and his sidekick repelled down a rope. Also, he fought the flag smashers and held his own before getting kicked off the truck.

Anyone recall the last time Bucky and Sam were laying side by side...DEFEATED?? Oh yes, Civil War after getting smacked down by Spider-Man. I think this is their "thing" lol They'll be true partners when the next time they end up laying on the ground side by side defeated, they won't be talking hate to each other. I could imagine Bucky saying, "This again..." and Sam replying, "Yeah. We suck."

Coming from Luxembourg (next to Germany) I am so excited to see more of Daniel Brühl in the MCU! I hope he will get more and more international opportunities like this and some other projects he was in such as Inglorious Bastards or The Alienist (and many great German movies). I grew up watching him on TV and I would love to see him be successful in Hollywood

Best reaction I’ve seen on this episode! In Civil War when Bucky’s got the metal arm (In flashbacks) I thought it was after he fell from the train in CATFA but apparently that was during the Korean War when Isaiah ripped it off.

12:00 About the shield weight, Vibranium is a kind of metal that is lighter that regular metal, if i'm correct, it was said that "vibranium is stronger than steel, weighs one third as much"
