I don't blame a lot of the side characters in this movie. Most people know about mental health issues but are very ill-equipped to handle people who suffer from them. They are unable to wrap their heads around that mentality and force themselves into their own safe space for protection and then notify the right people. This is what Trevor did, he contacted Rose' therapist for guidance and the sister (huge bitch) witnessed bad things from Mom as the older sibling and doesn't want to revisit that memory. I can't shun most of these characters for being afraid or feeling useless because they should. The therapist on the other hand was condescending, Kal Penn's character was more therapeutic than her. Good reaction and thought the atmosphere was very menacing. The ending was kinda cheesy though.

Exactly, spot on perception. Some people take their trauma to the grave and if they have had children, it only passes on through their lineage. Its like an aggregated curse. You may be your own person, but that energy or DNA has the potential to either be active and in full force, or dormant until it is triggered.

@@makima2983 Probably not, but that's why the demon chooses its next victim carefully, and therefore screens out potential psychopaths (which have no empathy and is pretty much immune to trauma) and can sense who is mentally weak and neurotic with a traumatic history which it then targets. This is one of my favorite horror movies I've seen in a very long time not only genuinely scary but the way it incorporates themes of trauma, depression, healthy and poor coping mechanisms for dealing with your issues as well as how that can effect the people in your life as well as you, tying it all into how the monster actually works was actually genius. That and dear sweet christ the design of the monster was one of the wildest creature designs I have seen in a minute.

In regards to the dialogue of the film with how harshly the characters spoke to our main girl, I think it's important to consider that this is majorly in the perspective of Rose. So there is a great chance that the other characters weren't actually talking that way to her but that's how SHE felt they were. As someone who's gone through depression myself, I can confirm that regardless of the best intentions my loved ones sent my way, my brain would most of the time warp everything said to me as a jab or attack. At the same time, the film uses this same dialogue to address the insensitivity that is often sent toward those suffering from mental health issues. Conversations are a two-way street, and I do appreciate being able to see how both sides may see the same situation. Just my two cents.

This movie is a great representation of what some may go through with mental illness. Many don't feel heard, while this "demon"/mental illness consumes them. Some people can be cruel in this world and will use words like "fruit loop". And when someone does take their own life with witnesses it does pass trauma to them. To someone witnessing suicide could be in so much shock that they freeze and that's why I think in the story he couldn't turn away. It feels like the "smile" people put on is like a mask they put on in front of others to hide things.

The more I watch this movie (seen it a few times) the more impressed I am with it. It seems like it's a take on Psychotic Depression (which is something I'm working on in a script I'm developing right now so... I immediately find it interesting). So it's not just trauma, it's also a severe and rare mental health issue. And the film only rarely strays into "Hollywood" and I respect that.

I think the fact that so many people use such insensitive language for mental health in this movie is 1) realistic (I can totally imagine gross hospital execs calling their patients 'nutcases' to each other), and 2) makes the story scarier. The other characters are so dismissive of mental health that it isolates the person in crisis because everyone else in the movie just says, "she's a fruitloop" and totally disregardsher concerns. It adds to the fear and frustration. I just kept thinking, "why doesn't she kill herself by herself, early on, so no one else gets it?" But I guess it makes sense that protagonists in horror movies would have a strong will to live.

I'm really grateful for all you guys said about the disrespect and how poorly mental health was treated by 'outsiders'. It definitely got to me when I watched this in cinemas, as someone who spent a night in a psychiatric ward who had people say things like that. Police were called down because of two guys who were fighting (one of who had been perfectly polite to me and another girl, apologising when they thought they scared us and keeping their distance afterwards). It was this tiny waiting room corridor and I had folded myself up on a chair, I have a few policeman like a foot away from me, so I decide to ask them how their night was going. I got completely ignored and one said to another "I don't get why we have to be here with the crazies". So yeah, people please be respectful and just generally be good people, especially if you are in a position of power!!

So glad you two finally got around to this one! It's such a great metaphor for mental health wrapped into a horror show! The premise of how we (as a society) try to push mental illness away and ignore it or minimize it, is so on point with today's perspective. Someone feeling depressed, we're so quick to tell them to just "smile" ... because no one has time for depression/mental illness/suicidal thoughts. And the way NO ONE would validate her neurosis. It's so on point. And I get how the "monster" going inside of her or consuming her is a bit much... but if you think of her finally giving up to her trauma... and then passing it on - it worked for me. :) Great reaction you two!

I don’t think that was the demons only form. The demon used Rose’s mom as a fear factor to scare the hell out of Rose. It worked a little too well to the point where Rose thought she beat it when it was all in her head. Some families are like that sadly, they aren’t emotionally trying to be there fully. When people automatically resort to calling people that are obviously going through something. Calling them crazy is the worst thing to call a person in panic and fear.

It was good for a low budget first time directing. But, for anyone who's a fan of Mike Flanagan's work of The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor and Midnight Mass... this takes a lot of inspiration from the quiet shots, jump scares, use of sound. The first shot is literally the same as one used before by him. Although the lead actress and the first who kills herself were good, all the other actors were poor or irritating. Mental Health Therapist here, this movie is a great example of how people with mental health struggles are alienated and driven to greater distress by supposed supports. The movie made a point to go through all the different "traditional" terms used to deride a person with mental health struggles. It puts you in the place of a person who struggles to articulate things like anxiety and depression, never mind psychosis. The first thing most patients say to me is "I don't know how to say it", and once they try, the next thing is usually, "I know that sounds crazy." I'll also add that most people don't ignore their mental health so much as they don't even know how to gauge or measure it. A professor of mine once said, "Most of your patients will be people who should've come to you 5 years earlier." People take exhaustion, anxiety, depression, even trauma, far too casually because so many people do it. People forget what it means and feels to be healthy. It's not until the symptoms are giant neon lights that people even think to go for help much of the time.

what do you expect though? people to say "ok youre cursed, lets nip this in the bud," the people didnt know how to deal with the person they love, seemingly going absolutely crazy. i mean her sister put her dead cat in her nephews birthday present. just sayin

Nikki had a point when she mentioned the movies color because a lot of things in the movie were subconsciously telling you or the characters to be happy and smile, for example the hospital is a shade of pink called Baker-Miller Pink which is a pink that was created and tested in a lot of prisons to reduce violence and make people more “happy”

Fun fact, 90% of all killings by the "Smile Entity" could be avoided if these people learned to close their eyes... It can't traumatize, then cling to you if you don't look at its attempt to scar you

I was thinking that. But then it might be when you're in the presence of the demon you can't look away. We really don't get any rules about how the Curse works in this movie. Gonna guess in the sequel they might address it...

When I watched this I immediately thought the best thing to do would be to unfortunately sacrifice yourself to end the chain by isolating yourself from everyone (which she tried, but didn't take the necessary measures to prevent being found) and make it quick, if you can't murder someone else, you're dead already, save everyone else from it

Just watched this over the weekend. Great creepy movie with lots of tension and REALLY effective jump scares. It also did a good job at highlighting how many of us are completely dismissive of other people suffering from deep trauma or even mental illness that they are powerless to do anything about. Great horror movie with a really well done underpinning narrative about trauma and mental health.

Hey guys! considering what you guys really enjoyed about this movie, I would highly recommend It Follow (if you guys haven't seen it already - I didn't see a reaction video though). It's definitely a stand-out among movies that use score and camera work to build a ridiculous amount of tension! I gotta delve into your non-horror stuff too some time :D

If I was the husband/boyfriend and my woman was going through that I would tell her she's an amazing therapists and her patients she's her as a becon of hope when they are going through there moods and you have been able to find answers on many occasions. I would say hear me out and try to keep an opened mind, how we try the spiritual route and see what happens as the normal route isn't working for now. Take her to a spiritual healer and maybe it could help temporarily or permanently.

The part that really creeps me the fuck out the most even though it's not a jump scare is that part where she stares (the camera panning slowly to the left) at the apparition just so quite and smiling manically at her.

Like that nikki asked Steven if she would believe him or be sensitive. Well maybe would be more sensitive about it but who would believe that demon monster was appearing and making do things and popping up in people? Almost nobody. So can’t be to hard on other characters in this that don’t believe her.
