Lotus are popular here in the U.K.- mainly as road legal weekend track cars, not so much for daily road use but they have a very keen following and owners club activities. Great cars, I did my apprenticeship in the 70s working on Lotus cylinder heads (and fitting the larger valves as in the Europa S). Colin Chapman visited our works and came over and watched me working for a short while, which is a nice memory. 👍🇬🇧

I was thinking about buying a new C8, but in the end I decided I wanted a back to basics pure, lightweight sportscar and went for the Lotus. So glad that I did. Lotus has a deeper racing history and it shows when you get behind the wheel. Indy cars have a lay down driving position and the engine in the rear since Lotus brought that to the 500 and won. They also brought ground effects and carbon fiber to racing in F1, and they were more successful than Ferrari at their prime before Colin Chapman passed away. Yet few in the States recognize the brand. Sure, the Vette is faster but the Lotus is more fun to me on my local curvy roads and you don't need to be doing crazy speeds to feel it so you get that enjoyment every time you drive it. They are also pretty rare - I've seen at least a C8 on the road every month this summer but I have only seen 2 Elises in my area in the last 20 years, no Exiges. I always have people ask what it is when I stop to get gas or dinner in it and only a few true car guys recognize it immediately. Many guess it is worth $1-200,000, and are shocked when I tell them mine is 16 years old and about the price of a new Camry, or often less than the cars they are drivng. If you don't like attention, this is the wrong car. I live out of town and mostly drive roads around me so I don't have too much trouble there. The new Emira with a manual and the supercharged Toyota based 6 might also be worth a drive in a few years ..... just wish it was lighter and had a removable hood (roof). Again, likely faster but i bet it doesn't feel as good as the lighter Elise or Exige on a tight curvy road.

What a fun build and a fun color. You guys are doing great, and the car looks really good. Questions for you...if you knew you were going to blend using clear-coat, why didn't you scuff the additional sections first, for best adhesion? And, next, since the car is so small, why bother covering the driver's side door? Why not just blend with everything else and give the entire car a uniform clear-coat?

Exige vs Corvette is really a chalk and cheese comparison. The Corvette is a typical big power, American muscle car that needs a lot of power. The Exige is a very nimble, lightweight and fast car because it is lightweight. Think Go Kart with a bit of luxury. In a straight line after the first 100 yards the Corvette torque will power by the Exige but put some twisties in there and the Exige will be long gone. Exige S: Weight: 2,057 lb (933 kg) Power: 220 hp (164 kW; 223 PS) Power to weight ratio: 0.11 C8 Corvette: Weight: 3,913 lb (1,775 kg) Power: 490 hp (369 kW; 497 PS) Power to weight ratio: 0.13 But a couple of years later Lotus stuck a 345 hp V6 in the back of the Exige ..... 😳

Another amazing paint job. I have a question, why if the car has been 95% painted, do they leave the driver's side door with the original paint that clearly doesn't match the new yellow? Wasn't it better to paint it completely? Have a merry christmas. 🎄🎅
@GusMahn2 жыл бұрын
Paint materials are expensive! They only cleared 90% of the car and only because those panels had color blends on them. Clear doesn’t typically change the color underneath, so why waste material if it’s in good shape. Not sure about Lotus, but typically OE paint is more durable than refinish paint, though modern paints are really good.

@@GusMahn if it was so expensive to paint one more door than they shouldn't have painted the car till they had a budget. You don't paint 95% of a car and call it quits why risk the quality. Didn't make sense.
@GusMahn2 жыл бұрын
@@briankaitschuck125 They didn't paint/clear on any panels that didn't get color. They didn't paint the drivers's 1/4 under the clam. It's EXACTLY the repair that a body shop would have done if insurance was paying. It'll be a garage queen, so I wouldn't worry about durability, not that it be an issue anyhow.
@briankaitschuck1252 жыл бұрын
@@GusMahn it's the way Ivan said that yellow paint is hard to match. Then he said we may just paint the whole car so all the panels match. Then he takes 180 and shows us that yellow isn't hard to match and there's nothing to worry about. Watch other channels V--Tune 23 Garage or motor head.
