Nikolai Blokhin: Russian Master Portraits

In this video, Nikolai Blokhin will demonstrate the fundamental stages of the portrait painting process. The angles and closeup details of the camera are extraordinary as you watch this painting unfold. his multitude of brushes, using a scraper tool and his fingers is amazing!
Born in 1968 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, this young master has emerged as one of the most important artists of his time. Trained first at the district art school before entering the Repin Institute, Blokhin attained a solid academic foundation in art which can be traced, admired and interpreted today in some of Russia’s famous masters from the turn of the 20th century. While cultivating ideals realised by many of his predecessors in Russian art theory, Blokhins’ search towards a traditional expressive language consumed him in his early academic years. It was not until he entered the Academy of Arts that he began to search the canons of those who broke with tradition and shook up thematic artistic views, that he found his own distinct style. His ability has not gone unnoticed including the Grand Prize at the American Society of Portrait Artists 2002 competition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Grand Prize from the Portrait Society of America, Boston, in 2004.

Demonstrate the fundamental stages of the portrait painting process? Oh, ok. That makes sense. I thought he was finished and I thought it looked pretty rough for a finished painting. I didn't realize it was a demonstration in the fundamental stages of underpainting. I wonder what it looks like when it's finished?

@@wosinddieteller2185 он в прямом эфире рисует,разница между натурщиком и картиной велика.Ладно если увидели готовую картину без позируемого,тогда ладно,старик на картине и всё.Но натурщик офигел наверное когда увидел себя стариком на картине.У кого глаз хороший и мозги на месте увидит разницу и поймет касяк.

Портретная живопись, это не фотография, живописец в первую очередь пишет то, что видит, а сходство зависит не только от удачи, вдохновения, внешних факторов, но и настроя модели и художника.

I don't agree with this manner of painting: playing around with the brush seeking "artsy" random effects. I think that formula is entirely overdone here. Also, when done as a demonstration before an audience, this further proves the crowd-pleasing aspiration because the artist wishes to appear "creative and inspired" before the onlookers. And it shows up in the result, which suffers from superficiality.

I happened to spend the morning studying true master paintings by Titian. Then, youtube brought me back here, and boy what an eye opener!! After seeing Titian, it is especially crystal clear just how poorly done and fake are the paintings by this Russian joker!!! Wow, really awful paintings. It is comical to put "master" in the title.
