Nikon 1 V3

The Nikon 1 V3 is Nikon's latest high end CX format camera. It has an 18.3 MP sensor, lots of direct controls, comes in a kit with a 10-30 mm lens, an EVF, and an optional grip.

Wow, this may be the best photographic video I have ever seen. Larry explained the good and bad about this camera, that's a rare thing to see on KZbin. he did a great job on the presentation , and I learned a lot from watching this video . I've had my V3 for a year. It makes for a great travel camera, as well as a nice, lighter alternative to my larger, much-heavier DSLR. The V3 also has a great assortment of lenses, with the addition of the ultra-wide 6.7 -13mm & the long reach of 70-200mm CX. I appreciate the Nikon 1 system of lenses.

+Jelmer ten Hoeve The minimum focus distance of the 10-30mm kit lens is 7.87 (20cm). It has a top ISO speed of 12,800 which is very good for low light situations. The touchscreen does allow you to focus upon where you touch. The camera also features manual focus which will allow you to pre-focus when needed. - Yossi

very good review! oke the kid lens is 'slow' and sensor is 'small' but how close can it focus bokeh will be there. but plus high speed processor which will give you - 20 pictues a second! - high speed filming 120 HD - making pictures during filming - fast and a lot off focus points. how is the iso's qualitie? can you focus by touch? and prefocus?

It's pretty nice considering how small it is and the price point. If you need the speed, spend $1k or more for a different camera.

if nikon had of put an aps-c sensor and sacrificed alittle size and put the same mount on it as is on their dslr's so it would have been completely compatible with their hundred of lenses, this would have been hands down the best mirrorless camera on the market...

I'm curious if the v3 provides 1080p hdmi in realtime. IE not just when playing back video. Previous versions would switch between 720p live, and 1080p playback. It is really annoying. I'm also curious if it overheats while recording like the j5 can. Thanks.

For wildlife and bird photography what are your thoughts on using a J5 or the V3 over a DX DSLR? Would you use a Nikon 1 lens or a 70-300 VR DX lens with an adapter for wildlife photography? Thanks

Nice review Scott. Just want to ask how the auto-focus works. You said that it has contrast detect auto focus (CDAF) and phase detect autofocus (PDAF). Will the PDAF work with Nikon 1 lenses? Or it will only work for full frame and APS-C Nikon lenses?

+Edwin Canlapan The phase detection AF points will all be towards the center of the frame. Phase detection autofocus will be possible with the Nikon 1 series lenses. The Advanced Hybrid AF system would chose which AF points to use based on the scene. *Christina* [e-mail]

What would you recommend... the Nikon V3 or the Nikon J5 for action like sports. Also, is the J5 capable of taking stills while recording without interruption like the V3?

+An Ak - For action/sports work, the J5 would be the best choice with its super high speed burst rates of 20 frames per second and options in certain modes for 60fps. It does offer the ability to take stills when recording video as well. - Yossi

Looks like a good camera, too bad the kit lens is so slow. I think it's time for Nikon/canon to include a fast lens as a kit lens.

A fast kit prime will work but not a fast zoom as the package price will be too high. However they could start using f2.8-4 as a kit zoom instead of the f3.5-5.6. Sigma already makes cheap zooms like the 17-70 2.8-4 and 18-50 2.8-4

Asad the great I agree about the zoom and the faster lens. Lets hope they agree too. f 5.6 or F6.5 is just too slow even for a kit lens.

***** Yeah I agree, indoors f2.8 is the minimum aperature you need to get good handheld photos in most cases. But a f2.8-4 kit lens would be fine as long as it is sharp wide open at f2.8. Cause indoor, I tend to shoot wide anyways. However, 5.6 is fast enough outdoors during the day.

Very impressive camera, except for that sensor, it's just to small, it's not gonna make me switch from even the cheapest DSLR to it (which it should be doing). Also the price is a little high ($1200)

What was the point Nikon? 3:30 :) 9:46 ... not to mention that at this price one pays for the logo on the cam. and there are way better alternatives out there..

Still a "CX" sensor. I'm a Nikon shooter and I'm thinking of going Sony for my travel camera. I'm very disappointed.
