We’re so alike with our camera ethics! I love the freedom of being able to use ANY camera and be creative and enjoy the process! I cannot remember the last time I used my “fancy” full frame cameras for anything other than filming myself (because the AF is less annoying hahah)

I'm surprised to hear you're selling the M8 but maybe not that surprised... There are few people who can seemingly use any camera and take the same quality of images no matter what and you definitely have that ability. I love the Nikon 1 system. I can carry both the 10-30 and 30-100 lenses in one hand! The bodies seem to be on the fragile side though as I've lost a V1 when the AF stopped working. The camera I'm shooting this summer is the Olympus C740. Have you heard of it? hehehe. THANK YOU so much for turning me on to this dirt cheap camera. It is such a wonder.

I SO get that whole "over-extended" in gear thing: I was in debt (and had just retired from bus driving) with too many lenses, three cameras...it was nuts. Very difficult to choose which to keep, but in the end, of course, one can make great photos with any camera. Eyes. Brain. Instinct. Still dicking around thinking which to keep, but I'll figure it out.

I think the weak point in the Nikon 1 system was the 10-30/30 -110 zoom lenses which had a high failure rate due to sub standard internal electronics, I don't think the cameras are especially failure -prone, the 1V1 in particular seems pretty tough with very few moving parts..

For me personally, I like to use cameras that I have a connection to in some shape or form. I currently own 3, Nikon F50, Ricoh GRII and a sigma DP0 Quattro, and after watching one of your videos, you have persuaded me to hunt down a Quattro H. There's just something special in those cameras to me they just seem to fit me perfectly regardless of their flaws, and I wouldn't swap them for any of the newest ones on the market ( ok maybe a Leica monochrome ). Thankyou for your videos, I feel like I'm home.

The AF version of the 75mm f2.8 for the 645d is amazing if you haven't already tried it. There is a Made in Japan version that came with the 645N and a later not Made In Japan version that was sold along with the 645d and z. Both incredible lenses. I’ve run the gambit of cameras too, and landed on the original Canon 5D. I use an Olympus 58mm f1.2 and their 100mm f2.0 lenses. I’ve never found anything with a better look, and I’ve shot D700, Leica M8, M9, M240. People are caught up in megapixels but Ai will make the megapixel war useless. If you have 1 winning shot out of 50 then you can easily upscale the image for your purpose. There are niche applications where you need insane detail but that’s a very small percentage of the market.

Sounds like a great line-up. I'm shooting digital this summer so far even though, I have film and film cameras to use, and the light is finally here - it's the processing, that makes me prioritize digital photography over film at the moment. I'm currently trying to convince myself not to add an Olympus Camedia C2500L and a Panasonic DMC FZ2 to my own line-up. I know I can get by with my Sigma Foveon sensor cameras and what I have been using lately (Canon EOS 5D Classic, Nikon D600, Sony RX100 III and Olympus XZ-1), but the itch never goes away.

I have always liked photography and always had a camera(s) normally budget cameras as the money was needed for family food etc. When I retired I saw old 2nd hand cameras for sale, cameras that had peaked my interest when new, but, which at that time were well outside of my price range. I watched what they were actually selling for and if i could get one for a lot less. I would buy it, "play" with it for a while and then sell it on. So far after 13 years my camera fund is at + £700. If a camera becomes a "keeper" I buy it from myself at cost. I seem to be getting more keepers. There are two reasons. I have gone down the odd rabbit hole, foveon sensors for example. Also I am getting old and as friends die it tends to trigger a "Oh f it, you can't take it with you so i will keep this one" Re IR photography don't forget the Sigma SDs have a removable IR folter. A camera I am enjoying at the moment is the Light L16. With the last iteration of the firmware/software it is a very competent and fun.

Haha. I've been there, but a few years back I realised buying expensive cameras is a fool's game. Now, I don't buy ANY new cameras at all! I just cycle through interesting used cameras, all pretty cheap, that interest me, then I sell them on (often for what I paid for them, or a bit more) and buy another one. So, a couple of weeks ago, I found a very, very cheap Lumix GH4 + 14-45mm kit lens for $120, in good working condition. I fancied it to try out some of the really good video capabilities, alongside stills. It's good for using with my vintage glass, too.I did, also, decide that I wasn't going to buy any more cameras that don't have some form of viewfinder! I am also on the lookout for a cheap Oly EM5i and a Sigma SD9 (to whip out the IR filter for some IR photography, just one screw to remove!) The Nikon V3 is a pretty good camera. The 1" sensor performs really well. I bought a Wasabi battery recently, too! They are the best third party batteries, IMO.

I have a Nikon One, the v2 version. I bailed on the system when the v3 went to a mini SD card. I also have the same lenses you have. The zooms are stellar. They were German made, rock sold, and did splendid work with the one inch sensor. Now, as to the latter. I've had no problem with it. It takes wonderful photos. I don't think it's to blame for the Nikon One's failure in the market. I feel confident about this because of what Sony has been able to do with the same sensor. Sony has not been shy about exploiting that sensor. For instance, the RX100 series has been a huge success. No, the problem for Nikon was not the sensor or the lenses, it was that they didn't know how to market the camera, how to exploit its form factor or how place it in its own lineup. It would be several years for Nikon to figure out how to enter the mirrorless market with other sensor sizes and form factors. The company was on the point of failure before they finally introduced the Z series -- and that series was a jumble of compromises and disappointments. It wasn't until the second round of the Z series and, most recently, the Z8, that Nikon could make marketable mirrorless cameras for an audience whose expectations had in the meantime been tutored so successfully by Sony. I cling to my Nikon One v2 because of its utility as a nature tool. The reach of the zoom you showed is 810mm eqv and the combination could hardly be more compact in the field. For me the Nikon One v2 was a success, despite Nikon's worst efforts.
@OneMonthTwoCameras
@OneMonthTwoCameras Жыл бұрын
I didn't even know about these cameras until a couple years ago and it didn't stick the first time I used them because I had a J camera and really missed the viewfinder experience but with the V lineup, I have been really enamored. I'd love to add a V2 to my bag one day, but for now I am still trying to strip the collection down more :)

Always look forward to your videos. Glad you have the cameras you want to use. Of course my selection of bodies will differ from yours. As my mother use to say, “That’s what makes horse racing.” I am not a tiny sensor kind of guy. I have a Lumix FZ200. It is a super zoom with a constant 2.8 aperture. Turns out Lumix was able to accomplish this feat by using a smaller than 1” sensor. I suppose with AI the files can be enhanced so one can print large images. I am fixated on APSC and M43 bodies. I have two 43s bodies, the E1 and E300. I have two zoom lenses but can’t find any other of those lenses. I recently unearthed an Olympus 8080. Had the 5050 and it is hiding now. Both were popular in the day but see so seldom for sale these days. I have to get organized! I have several bodies as I don’t sell my cameras. The thing is I misplace the batteries and their chargers. I’m labeling and bought a plastic organizer with several draws to solve this issue. Except for the Olympus, thank goodness my bodies all use SD cards. Speaking of SD cards, I have a new game to play. I have some 1 and 2 GB cards. I use them and make believe I am using film. I’m going to the Pride parade in three hours. I will take 5-800 pictures today. I love this parade! This is no time to display any discipline. For a walk on the street knowing I can on make 20 or 36 images forces me to be disciplined. Sometimes it is good to have this discipline so I bring home substantially less images when I return home. As a street shooter I am happy with ~2% of my images. Either I didn’t capture the moment or what I thought was an interesting moment turns out not to be. One never knows. I try not to chimp so I am excited to see what treasures I created when I return home. Have fun with your summer bodies and lenses. Your daughter has no idea of all the images that await her when she is older. Here is a thought. A photographer who introduced me to video said what he wouldn’t give to have recordings of his daughter when she was five or eight. If that is the case, I would encourage you to take more video clips of your family. Unfortunately the bodies you are attracted to are less than stellar when it comes to video bye and bye. Funny that you made this video now as I sit here with my Uncle's SX-70 gifted to me many years ago, now totally refurbished and updated by Retrospekt. After a long journey and many cameras (that I still love), I've found balance. I like the immediacy of digital, but don't gravitate to the clean look and tire of doing post work. I love the look of film, but even when I did my own developing, the gap from pressing the shutter to seeing the image was too much, I'm impatient in my "old age". I love squares and have shot Polaroid seriously since 2008, but the film was dicey for years and all of my SX-70's were "quirky" to say the least. It wasn't until I refurbed this SX-70 next to me that it all came together. Yeah, $300 was a lot, but the balance of how (not, but) instant, the look of the film (Reclaimed Blue and BW600) and now how accurate the camera is has given me a balance I've been looking for. The Leica M240 has been sitting in its bag for longer than it ever has, and the Canon S90 and even the Ricoh GRD IV (my fav street camera by far) get used less, even when I travel because of the SX-70. As with the seasons, this too will probably change a bit, but oh what wonders we will capture along the way.

Hi Ali, another great vid. I always drool over Leica's, Contax's and Rolleiflex's and always had this idea that if I use a Leica M6 or a Rolleiflex or some other iconic super expensive camera then I'll magically turn into a "photographer". It's a ridiculous concept and sadly it's fuelled by some youtubers and influencers whose whole graft is to flog a certain brand. Honestly, I sometimes feel dirty when I post a pic on instagram and then write the camera and film or the gear used to get the shot. It doesn't matter. If I posted a phone pic or a pic from one of my old 35mm slr cameras or one of my DSLR's it's irrelevant. People get way too hung up on overpriced and unnecessary gear. But having said that I'll probably spend my lunch break drooling over Pentax LX's and Nikon F's and Leica Q's on ebay....lusting over cameras is a hard habit to kick...haha!

Camera is just a tool to help you shape your creativity. I am still using large format film cameras, and don't feel that I have to spend £6000 ( UK prices ) for an M11 to be able to photograph, even though I do have Leica M film cameras.

I enjoyed your video and like your photography philosophy!! I had the Nikon1 and regret selling it. If photographers carefully would have exercised control in spending money on cameras and gear they would have been richer. I have been downsizing my cameras and gear. Due to my medical situation with tremors and prostate cancer I have changed my photography habits. Actually I have started using older compact digicams. They're easier to carry and I'm trying to use my Pixel 7Pro cell phone camera less because it seems that I always have the habit of checking texts, emails, and social media when I'm taking photos with the Pixel. Best wishes, Duane

Thank you for sharing Duane and I couldn't agree with you more. Those compact digicams are not only a blast but can really deliver and I love using mine as well. And I truly appreciate not having the feeling of endless connectivity and just leaving my phone in the car. All the best to you.

Have been photographing for about 50 years now, and never ever owned or used a Nikon. Recently I decided I would like to try a digital camera with an EVF and found a Nikon 1 V1 with 10-30mm standard zoom on Marktplaats (second hand 'eBay' here in the Netherlands) for a nice enough price to take the jump. But the lens wasn't up to scratch, as its aperture isn't working. Upon further online investigation, I learned that quite a few of these Nikon 1 lenses all have the same problem: one small aperture cogwheel deteriorates over time, rendering the lens kinda useless. So much for my first try of Nikon :-/

Many Nikon 1 lenses have aperture defects, and Nikon will no longer repair them, but there is a guy in Taiwan who replaces the faulty plastic gears with metal ones that will last.

are you familiar with the Panasonic L1 (aka Leica Digilux 3)? I've seen quite a lot about that camera recently, seems to be super rare but also super unique (basically DSLR with a rangefinder style viewfinder. A bit like a better looking Olympus E-330) Was kind of tempted to pick one up but I dunno if that's really worth it (also, I'm eally glad you picked up a D700, it's been my go to for I don't know how many years and it nerver dissapointed me. I have newer stuff nowadays for when I need more modern specs, but I always end up going back to the D700 at one point or another :)

It's not "a bit" like an Olympus E-330, it shares a significant number of parts, including the sensor and entire mirror chamber/viewfinder assembly. It just lacks the secondary live view sensor.

Excellent video from a seasoned photographer with gems of wisdom throughout - thank you!! Wouldn't image stabilization help with infrared on the Canon G9? I can get about 1/5 of a second easily without blur at night on Fuji XC15-45 OIS but I haven't tried it with a 720nm filter yet in daytime. Just asking and I dunno since it's foreign territory to me.

Nice video but Im guessing the next video is you filming which cameras you will be selling and deciding to keep most of them when it really comes down to it. Or if you DO actually sell off your expensive cameras, you'll just put that money towards new ones 😀 I sold my Nikon 1 J1 for pennies on the dollar and had to package it with the 18.5mm f/1.8 just to get rid of it. Basically gave that $200 lens away for free. Nobody wants that system any longer it seems and the image quality was just OK. Id go with a M43 setup if I wanted small, light and cheap.

Ive been wanting to replace my Nikonos 35mm dive camera with the Nikon 1 series underwater camera. The Nikonos is bomb proof and goes with me to the beach and on kayaking trips but I'm not into film much currently. Cant say no to loving a D700! I think Nikons have always had super solid colors out of camera from almost any generation of their digital line, hard to go wrong really.
@OneMonthTwoCameras
@OneMonthTwoCameras Жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the Nikon colors. They're really solid and natural. And I have had my eye on that Nikon 1 underwater camera. It looks so fun! If I weren't in pairing down mode I'd probably have picked one up as well. Best of luck!
@StephenStrangways
@StephenStrangways Жыл бұрын
In reality, the AW1 is barely waterproof. It works perfectly fine in the rain, but don't actually submerge it, especially with the age of the seals on all of them now, or you're going to kill it. If you really want to take it underwater, put it in a housing, which you can easily test, and if it happens to leak a little bit, the camera will be fine with a little bit of water.

I look at KZbin as entertainment and only a very few times have I ever really gotten something worthy out of the photography community when it comes to education. Most of the stuff it just product reviews and its QVC for the most part. So I just consume it as fun. I really did not get better at photography until I bought some online course from some Canon and Nikon ambassadors because they just broke everything down from starting a wedding and breaking down the lens and breaking down lighting. That's when everything clicked for me. When your trying to learn from KZbin your bouncing around from so many people its just a big cobweb with one person saying this and other person saying that. Then your watching a portrait shoot and then a landscape video.

I love how much free education is available on YT but I do think there is a point of diminishing returns and as you say, it is easy to loose focus or have a solid through line to results particularly if you're just starting out. I'm glad you found what worked for you.
