Nikon 18-140 Lens - Review and Camping Adventure

Many have asked about the 18-140 zoom lens from Nikon, so I decided to take one on a back country camping trip. In addition, many have asked about my camping gear, so I decided to give a quick review:).
If you feel the 18-140 range will meet most of your needs, this might be the best bang for the money. The resulting images were solid and the zoom mechanism is smooth and without creep. A good all around lens.

Another great video Mark, especially during lockdown here in the UK! Love the air trap bag what a cool idea! I traded in my 18-55 kit lens a while back for a used 18-105 which I use most of the time now, although 18-140 sounds even better. Looking forward to your next trip.

Appreciate the post/feedback!:) I like the 7000 series and they are weather sealed and solid and the D5300 is a nice body as well. How do you like the Sigma 150-600? A friend of mine used one with a teleconverter which gave him more reach however you need good light to maintain a fast shutter (increase the ISO helps as well).

I got the 5300 as well with the 18-55 kit lens, but I'm looking for some sharper and better lens. And the 18-140 seems what I need (at least more zoom, so more flexibility). What did you feel passing from 18-55 mm kit lens to 18-140 on your Nikon 5300? Good improve the photo quality, the sharpness?

Interesting, I did the same thing you did with an 18-140mm on a D5300. This combination is as close to perfection as possible. In my Tamrac Expedition #4, I also carry a 55-200mm and an 85mm. I am not a pro but enjoy this hobby to the highest levels with this gear. Often, I check out videos like this one and do exactly what I have learned from them. The Nikon 18-140mm "kit" lens is underrated and not respected as it should. Thank You for the Validation.

Hi, nice video as always , thanks. In the past , I was taking around 65L backpack for 2-3 nights as well. but I made a change in how I pack and in how much things I consider as critical to the trip. Now. I can fit everything in max 48L but usually 32L (when it is not rainy). I don't know how much it weights but it shows to be a bit too heavy. Heavy pack limit your movements and don't let you to get the most of the hike , to feel the freedom . I suggest to try and reduce this pack as much as you can . try to check also the weight of the pack itself the the "3" (tent, sleeping bag , sleeping pad).
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Ahhhhh yes ... sounds like you have been down this path before and can appreciate the weight and size factor:). I agree with your assessment as well and thought the same - shed the nonessentials, however I need to account for additional gear (i.e. batteries, tripods, cameras, etc. (if planning to record vids)). I may create more videos about back country camping, etc. which should be interesting/fun:).

Nice video, it was interesting to hear about the way you prepare and pack for these trips. Kind of gives me inspiration to do it myself. You should definitely make more videos on hiking, finding good camping grounds, and preparation

Mark, this was a fantastic adventure Sir! Beautiful trail...and it looked even more appealing given the rain (though, I can relate to the nuisances). Lovely shots! I am seriously interested in your guidance on camping (gear, preps, safety tips, trails to pick and what do you look for in a landscape...have already picked some gems from your videos, but would be great to see a dedicated video about it). Been looking to upgrade from bridge to an entry-level DSLR around the range of Canon EOS 200 DII / Nikon D5600 (open to suggestions from other brands as well). I am currently using a Sony Bridge with a 1/2.3 type (7.82 mm) Exmor R CMOS sensor and ZEISS Vario Sonnar T 4.3-215mm Lens (F2.8 - 6.3), which has been a good start, but has started showing limitations in many ways. I have seen Nikon D3400 work amazingly well in your videos and have also benefitted from your advice on D5600. Purpose: Mostly landscape & wildlife photography (and, occasionally, street photography). Your suggestions to that end would help a great deal.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I am thinking along the same lines regarding videos on back country camping so stay tuned:). Sounds like you are ready to step-up to a new camera of some sort after playing with a bridge camera, and I can appreciate your situation. First, try to settle on a manufacturer (i.e. Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji) ... it can be costly to start with one and migrate to another:). Which one should you pick? I feel all the major manufacturers are good/solid and typically have a following based on brand loyalty. Second, I have shot with many different cameras and lenses over the years and would lean towards a good used camera if available. I know many people who received a new entry/mid level camera as a gift and didn't use it or used it but very little. Third, have fun with whatever you get:). Take time to understand all the features and exploit them fully:).

@@RealWorld : Thank you so much. I am in early stages of my research (read 'education') as before deciding for a brand I need adequate awareness of what to look for in the camera for the purpose described. If you can suggest any specific spec-points to keep in mind while making the decision, I'd be very grateful.
@RealWorld

Glad to be of help!:) I suspect you will encounter the age old debate regarding crop sensor vs full sensor and which is better, etc. I have both and while there are advantages to the full, crops are great as well. Full sensors capture more information however they are typically more expensive for both the bodies and lenses. Crops are nice because they are typically less expensive and provide more reach when using the same lens size. Nonetheless, you will not go wrong with either:). The next decision might be mirror vs mirrorless:). I have used both and both are solid. Some say mirrorless in the future and while manufactures are certainly going down this path, I suspect mirrors will be around for a bit longer:). Mirrors are nice simple because you can view/see the scene without the need to turn the camera on (mirrorless cameras using an EVF (electronic view finder) which requires power). Regarding other features (i.e. max ISO, number of focal points, etc.) ... most cameras will cover all your basic and not so basic needs:).

18-140 is undoubtedly one of the sharpest lenses among the DX lenses but I'm not sure whether investing on it anew is a prudent idea, since Nikon - rather all the companies - are in a transition phase towards mirrorless. But still I love this lens, especially with D7500 it's just awesome.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
agreed, the 18-140 seems to be a staple in the zoom lens lineup. i am keeping a close eye on mirrorless as well:). i suspect mirrorless will remain for a good number of years, as i believe a number of people do not like the EVF. nonetheless, mirrorless is gaining ground as technology advances and brings new features to the market.

Hello; I like your videos, but one question I have to ask: Does Nikon make two versions of the is lens? My 18-140 is marked DX, and therefore has no "crop factor" on my APS C camera. But, I am like you; I LIKE the lens! Keep up the good work!
@RealWorld

I believe Nikon makes only one version of the 18-140. Nikon along with other manufacturers list zoom ranges based on the 35mm equivalent even though the lens is a dedicated the crop sensor. I created the following video which might be of some help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYjTpGZ8e99oq8k

Hi from England! Great video! I love your style and approach. Hopefully some more outdoors/hiking/camping advice in the future, that would be great 👍. I have the 18-105mm Nikon lens, I think it’s a good all rounder. Apart from the extra 35mm of reach, is there any other reason for me to upgrade to this? I’m probably going to stick with the 18-105mm as I haven’t had any problems with it. 😀

Hey nice video. By the way can anyone help me i have noticed that my 18-140mm has way too much distortion and i dont know if it may be broken.....
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
The greater the zoom range, the greater the distortion for the most part. The 18-140 has a good amount of distortion at the extremes (18 and 140) which more noticeable when shooting a flat landscape (like water (large lake/ocean)). Distortion is a result of physics caused by the given lens and relatively quick to correct in post processing. You may want to post an image somewhere and link back to this thread.

a bit late on the reply but i like the fixed 50 or fixed 35 for portraits. both offer a wide open aperture of f/1.8 which provides a nice/soft background and tact sharp focus. :)

Optical distortion is slightly great with the 18-200 but it's not too bad in my opinion (and correctable in post processing). I might lean towards the 18-200 if given the choice for the same price:).

Hello. I'm sorry that I'm bothering you. I see you have a lot of photographic experience. I want to buy nikon 18-200mm vr or nikon 18-140mm vr. Which of these lenses is better? I mean the quality of photos and AF. Both focal lengths are very close so the choice will be the one that is optically better. Thank you
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/question:). The resulting image quality will be nearly identical, however the optical distortion will be slightly greater in the 18-200 at the extreme ends. For example, if you are shooting a landscape with a flat horizon (i.e. ocean) at 18 on the 18-200, you will notice a bit more bowing compared to the 18-140 at 18. This may not be a huge issue but something worth noting.

wow - this is a good question and one i was not expecting!:) both cameras are very good, however if given the choice, i might lean towards the X-T30:). if i had existing Nikon lenses, i might lean towards the z50. so why the X-T30? the z50 has a higher max ISO which can be nice in really low light situations (51200 vs 12800). nonetheless, the X-T30 has more focal points which can be nice for fast moving subjects (425 vs 209), slightly higher resolution which is not a huge deal but worth a minor note (26mp vs 21mp), and faster continuous shooting which can be nice for fast moving subjects (20fps vs 11fps). again, both are solid and you will not go wrong with either IMO:).
