Hold on to your hats folks: Nikon have just released a VERY interesting new lens at a very nice price point, and lightweight too: the AF-S 20mm f/1.8G ED. 2 aspherical elements, 2 ED elements, nano coat, good price point too. Be interesting to see how that performs! Could potentially be ideal supplement to the 14-24 lens (or even alternative!)

I would get the 24mm 1.4, you can always move forward to take a shot but sometimes you cant move back. in that case you will get more shots with the 24. im new to it all so correct me if im wrong
@1337AsianProductions13 жыл бұрын
@MasteR024 You can always sell it. Glass retains its value. Although DX lenses are worth less than FX lenses and sometimes lose their value faster than FX lenses, you can still sell it for quite much. Try listing it on eBay or your local Craigslist. What's wrong with it? I've never owned this lens but I heard good things about it.
@sacredgeometry11 жыл бұрын
Depends what you need. If you need a low light wide angle get the 24mm 1.4 or 28mm 1.8 if you need a super wide - wide angle then get the 14-24... (which doesn't take filters btw) They are both amazing lenses, you wont be let down with either. I personally would get the 1.4 because I try to only use f2 or below.
@namero99910 жыл бұрын
Do you have an idea about how this lens performs against the Samyang/Rokinon 24mm f/1.4? I am interested only in OPTICAL comparison as for my purposes autofocus and other mechanical feats are not so important. The price delta is huge, and if optically they are comparable, I might go with the cheap version..

cant decide between this 24mm 1.4 lens or the 35mm 1.4... its gonna be the only lens ill be able to afford for a while so i wanna make it count. i love street shots. any ideas i should consider?
@Epoque9910 жыл бұрын
The Rokkinon 24mm f/1.4 has a good reputation. It is especially popular with astrophotographers who,want a lens that keeps point light sharp out to the corners. Apparently this lens performs every bit as well as the Nikon on that front, although other things such as contrast, light fall off, bokeh and flare control are not nearly as good as this Nikon lens.

Epoque99 What are your thoughts on the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art lens as an alternative to the Nikon 24mm f/1.4?
@Epoque999 жыл бұрын
I own the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art which is the best AF 35mm lens I have ever used, put it that way. I'd go so far as to say a masterpiece: I won a national Nikon competition taken on one. I have had a play with the 24mm, and it too seems excellent, very well made, lovely focus action, still has fluorite low dispersion and special low dispersion glass as the 35mm, and aspherical elements. I have heard excellent reports about it, and considering the price compared to the Nikon, it is a steal. So based on all that, I'd get one if I was in the market for one
@shropshire219 жыл бұрын
Epoque99 Thank you for your thoughts. I own the 35mm f/1.4 lens as well.

I admit to having been eyeing up that lens, but haven't taken the plunge just yet mate. I'd like it though as all the reviews for it look very good indeed. Plus, don't want to spend £1400 on the Nikkor if there is an "as good" or "slightly better" lens at £700!

@Shaker4x410 жыл бұрын
Is a better choice over 28mm which is prone to lens flare day and night among other inadequacies that are quite bad. This 24mm is the perfect compliment to your 50mm 1.8G (1.4G not great value by image saturation/sharpness comparison) and beautiful 85mm 1.4G primes..
@gabrielsayers36010 жыл бұрын
Shaker4x4 Hey, I know you commented on this quite a while ago but your comment caught my eye. I recently upgraded my D7k to a D810 and so am selling most of old lenses. I have a newfound interest in artistic architectural photography (like the work of Matthias Heiderich) and so am wondering what lenses to purchase. I'm leaning towards the prime route and considering keeping my 50mm 1.8G and purchasing this 24mm and the 85mm 1.4G. Any feedback would be much appreciated!
@Epoque9910 жыл бұрын
Just as an addendum Jo Bloggs, you won't need an f/1.4 wide angle lens for the kind of work that Matthias does. This 24mm is really more for reportage, street, and documentary photography when you want shots with impact and isolated subjects / bokeh, etc. I would also argue that, at around £1400, it is nearly £400 more than you can obtain the 24-70 which has a 24mm end, and the 14-24 which is also a lot cheaper. Every seasoned Nikon professional has these two lenses in their bags, and successfully sell images of a high standing. I know Of National Geographic contributors who use either of these ad their primary lenses, and look at the work displayed in there. A 24-70 will take care of 95% of your needs most of the time, 50mm will enhance that as a combo. The 14-24 will take care of all your wide angle needs, and it is truly edge to edge sharp, doesn't suffer coma flair like the 24mm f/1.4 does (if you like shooting at night)... The only sacrifices are weight and bokeh, but, you'll save yourself around £400 with which you'll be able to buy a top notch flash or even vertical grip for your D810, or, a damned good tripod from Gitzo!

Epoque99 Thanks for the advice, that's really useful stuff!
@Epoque9910 жыл бұрын
You're welcome mate, no worries. This lens here is a kind of "oh yes please, at some point" kind of lens (that's how I felt when I tried one out). But when you are moving straight from DX to FX, I'd definitely address the priorities first... Get your wide to short tele range sorted first and you won't be found wanting as this is a special purpose lens. You will (I guarantee) adore the 14-24 and 24-70: they are the reference lenses in the DSLR world at these focal lengths

Looks like a fantastic lens, this, perfect IQ and a lovely bokeh. A plus is it's double-duty, 24mm on FX and a classic 35mm equivalent on DX. The only thing I'd wonder about is if at that price-range it isn't better to go for a Zeiss or Leica, if of course you can live without AF.

If you´re a professional and can afford it, you probably buy both. The zoom for everyday use and the prime for extreme low light situations. It doesn´t take much room in your bag and weight shouldn´t be an issue as well.

Complaining about price, and analyzing the bokeh, are totally missing the point of this lens. This is for the midnight street-level coverage of riots, twilight helicopter shots of Manhattan, rock concerts, stuff like that. The real market for this lens doesn't care about the price, because it'll pay for itself in a few months, and besides, it's way cheaper than the big telephotos they probably own, or the two D3s a year they have to buy because they wear them out.

@TheLee3000 You're showing your lack of knowledge about photography when you say such a stupid thing. This lens comes with a lens hood and you should always use one, not just because it protects the lens from frontal impact but because it helps to reduce flare. Why do you think Nikon and every other lens maker, for that matter, includes a lens hood with their lenses?
