I sold mine to get a 400mm F2.8. The nice thing with that 300mm F2.8 carry case is if you don’t fit a TC on the body you can fit the lens plus a D5 in the case and it closes so you can use it to transport your camera and lens attached ready to go.

This is true. The carrying case that the 300mm comes with can also be used with even a pro camera body mounted on the lens.

I picked one up for less than $2,000 in 2024 in like new condition. Fitted on a D500, it is an absolute dream for youth football. Enjoy the hobby.

Such a beautiful lens. Hope Nikon will release its Z version soon, it would be a killer for sure, especially with the outstanding Z teleconverters.

If there is money to be made, Nikon will produce whatever they need to in order to get that money. So, in time there will most likely be a Z variant of every lens previously made. Or at least more sales of adapters in the mean time? Nevertheless, yes, this 300 is pretty nice.

the Z version at 2.8 will be very expensive. Probably around $10k and that puts it out of just about everyones range.

This lens currently retails for around 6900 CAD. However, it's now considered a special order item and is back-ordered. Most likely due to a few of the current global crises. Some retailers have the lens listed as discontinued and no longer available. I guess one might now consider this lens to be rare?
