I’m really looking forward to the new 35/1.4. This will be my second Z lens after my 24-120/4S. I’m a portrait photographer and am absolutely psyched about it. I’m glad it’s not an S-Line for two reasons: A: Cost 2: I like my lenses a little soft to produce more flattering skin texture (same reason I love my vintage Nikkors)

My advice to Nikon would be: If they design a successor of the 1.8 lenses they should add the control ring and a lens function button to it. Especially the 20 mm f/1.8 would benefit with it's large body. Now we have a small and light 1.4 lens which does have focus plus control ring.

@@csc-photo I think you won't see these in the next 5 years. What we are seeing is a bit some quirks that happen with new product development. With time, they saw that it was better to put that control ring, but it is the lesser but newer lens that is getting this.

I’m excited about the paradigm shift that Nikon is introducing. With F-mount, 1.4 was premium. Now 1.2 is premium. 1.8 used to be your cheap lens and now t’s premium and razor sharp wide open. 1.4 gets to be the new “Nifty lenses” (the cheap 1.8 in F Mount) which gives a traditional look at a reasonable price. That looks like a win-win-win to me. Given the choice to buy the 35 1.4 wait for the 35 1.2 or purchase the 35 1.8 ; I went with the 35 1.8 to match the rest of my primes and am satisfied with that decision! Love your perspectives Matt! 👍🏽

The main advantage of the 1.4 for me 50 years ago was that it made focusing easier, and was a must in low light focusing. I hardly ever used it for taking pictures, I usually used F4 - F8 in daylight.

Nikon needed an affordable line of good quality lens, I mean good and not exceptional. You can make the best lens in the world, but if it is not affordable then very few will be able to buy it. Generally it would be your 1.8 line of lenses. But perhaps because they were starting from scratch and had to put sine high quality glass and not to hard to do as 1.2 lens, they chose to do a very quality 1.8 line. Then with time when they had fully develop that line and had a very high quality 1.2 line-up. They chose to do that affordable good enough what used to be F 1.8 primes lines. But rather than think what they would have done, that is a f2.0 line-up, they decided to go creative and go f 1.4. Thus could be more impacful for the z system than even the z6iii. An affordable line-up of f 1.4 affordable primes would sell the system to a lot of photographers from different system or Nikon moving from f to z mount.

I don't know. I'm trying to remain open minded about this strategy by Nikon but I'm still not sure it was the right one. The 35 f1.4 is heavier and nearly the same dimensions as the f1.8. Other than a minor cost difference there doesn't seem to be much to differentiate the f1.8 from the 1.4 unless the 1.4 ends up being a nice character lens, which I personally would prefer. I really think they should have made an f2 non-S line. Make them smaller, lighter, not the sharpest lenses ever but decent in quality like Nikon knows how to do. Keep the 1.8 line and make them superbly sharp S lenses, keep the f1.2 line coming for the people that need to take 35mm shots of their cat indoors at f1.2 and the other six people on the earth that actually need a 35mm f1.2. We'll see I suppose. Maybe my needs are different than others, I want small, light, decent but not tip-top quality primes that I can use for street, reportage, candids, etc. I don't want third-party brands, I'd prefer Nikon's lens design ability and their legacy. Perhaps I'm in the minority and that's fine if so, I guess we'll see.

Your explanation makes perfect sense, Matt. Like many, I couldn’t initially sort out the thinking behind this lens, but now I get it. I own a mix of S and regular Z glass. Each has earned its place in my bag for a specific reason, and none disappoints. We are beyond spoiled for choice with Z lenses. One final thought: I do enjoy the extra control ring on some of my Z lenses, and typically use it for exposure compensation where it really makes fine tuning the exposure fast and easy without having to sacrifice the manual focus ring to gain that capability - and the 35 f/1.4 has it. The lens that initially confused me now intrigues me.

Great one once again, Matt! I hope your arguments will be heard and bring some back to a more realistic standpoint. I really thought this line would be "given" to third-party manufacturers... Sigma Art 1.4 on a Z... As you said before, where this 35 will be killer IMO would be on a stabilised crop sensor... Cheap, 1.4 equivalent of a 50ish mm... Anyway! Thanks for the great work, and stay safe in the cold!

I might be in the market for this 35 1.4. I already have the S Line 24 & 50 1.8’s so I do question if I really need a 35, but elsewhere I have seen the bokeh rendering of this new 35 1.4 likened to the 135 Plena. The Plena is the most incredible lens I’ve ever owned, I have done so much with it, I have to force myself to take it off and use something else! The prospect of a 35mm which might give me a similar look, and at such a low price, is something that would be hard to resist….

Thank you for sharing your insight. I would love to see a comparison between this lens and the Sigma 35 1.4 Art. That is currently my only adapted F mount lens and I am curious about whether the native Z mount is appreciably better. I am also really hoping that Nikon will put out a 50mm 1.4. Thanks Matt, as always, you talk a lot of sense and reasoned argument. I love my Z 50mm f/1.8 (no way could i justify the 1.2!) but most of the time my Z 24-70 f/2.8 is my go-to lens for the every-day focal lengths. On a different matter, the last time I used film was back in the mid 1990s when I used an Olympus OM-10. Since then I have been all digital - until now! My Z9 & Z8s are my regular every-day cameras however, I recently bought an Olympus OM-1n and a Nikon F5 with, in each case, a 50mm lens and am really enjoying stepping back to the simpler no technology (especially in the case of the Olympus) approach to photography. The limitations of these cameras as well as the cost of film and processing really make you stop and think about what you are shooting and the settings needed to get the right results. Obviously, I have no intention in stepping away from the modern digital technology for teh majority of my photography but I have found the film experience both challenging and rewarding and something i think anybody should try - especially as good film cameras and suitable lenses are currently so inexpensive - I bought all mine from my local reputable dealer with six month warranties. I know you still have similar cameras and would be great if you did something here on KZbin about and using them.

Hi Matt, interesting video that I enjoyed watching, just a couple of notes: . 24-35-50-85 1.4 apertures should be high quality lenses in any camera constructors lineup. Nikon did a smart choice, on its side, to focus on high quality primes with 1.8 and 1.2 from its perspective, not users one. I am a Canon shooter, and I like more Nikon policy/roadmap then Canon's one. I am also very happy for the outstanding quality that Z9 and Z8 have, it was a breath of fresh air. Once the Z6 III will drop a little in price will make the company a lot of profits. - competition, and in the Full Frame segment we know who's left, provides those focal lenses and 1.4 apertures not only on its own lineup, but also on the one of third parties allowed to their open mount. Do we really want to convince ourselves that the well-made 1.8 and 1.2 lenses are the best for us (Canon does not even provides high quality 1.8 glasses)? I don't. I am a 13 years Canon shooter. I don't like Sony bodies. They provide amazing image quality, like alla these new cameras do, but I don't really like the way they feel in the hand, otherwise I would have jumped boat a while ago. I would have considered Nikon, Z8 or Z6 III, but I want good quality 1.4 primes, and so do a lot of users. My two cents. Best of luck for the channel! ;)

Great info and insight. The underlying issue is the global economy which is dangling by a thread. People do not have the discretionary/disposable income that they once had given the inflation post Covid. Plus competing with ever growing cell phone camera improvements and there is a giant sucking noise of new camera potential buyers being drawn away. As for the 35mm lenses, it really is a "need" vs. "want" market. I am waiting to see if they release a new series of perpective control in Z mount. 👍🏻

On one hand, Nikon releasing a 35/1.4 changed the notion that "The Nikon Z Mount will forgo 1.4 lenses for 1.2 only". Something I believed until the hard facts after 6 years show there are exactly two f1.2 lenses. But on the other hand, I don't think anyone saw a 35/1.4 lens being released as a budget friendly, lower light option, as opposed to their previous "mid tier" series of F mount lenses. That's a great option. New price $600? Eventual street price just under $500? $200 less than the 35/1.8S street price. Ricci's tests show it only start to match in sharpness at f4, but still provides 2/3rds stops more of lower light gathering and shallower DoF when that's the priority at the expense of color fringing. Nice bokeh too. Not everyone uses it, but having a control ring AND a focus ring is something that I personally like and would have preferred that design choice on the 1.8S series of lenses. I'm actually hoping Nikon has more of these 1.4 lenses in development.

I already own the Tamron 35mm 1.4 SP in F mount which is a stellar performer in its own right so not considering this offering, but I am excited to see what they come out with next in this 1.4 line of lenses. I truly think they will be strong sellers for Nikon and attract a different subset of Z mount shooters then the 1.2 S lenses do.
@caleidoo

I'm in a comparable situation, still using the Sigma 35/1.4 ART with FTZ, probably until it breaks. The Tamron is even better than the Sigma Art, but came later - it's the best 35mm F1.4 for F mount, just a bit late to the game. I do miss the excellent third party F mount lenses in this video, which were better optically than Nikon F1.4's. What would you buy if your Tamron dies or gets stolen? Go to F1.8 S, wait for the huge and expensive 35/1.2 or go for this F1.4 which might be slightly less sharp wide open, more sensitive to flare and slightly slower to focus?
@philcampbell5827
@philcampbell5827 8 күн бұрын
@@caleidoo The Sigma ART is a great lens as well. If I ever needed to replace mine, I can say for sure it wouldn't be the 1.2S if and/or when it comes out. I don't use that focal length enough to justify spending that sort of money on it. Between the other two, it's hard to say...each one has it's own merits. Likely the new 1.4 I suspect. I know you're losing on the IQ from the 1.8 but it definitely seems to have a character to the images it produces. But I could certainly understand why someone would choose the 1.8 over the 1.4.

I’m not sure this is the lens formula you want for astro photography. Nikon is emphasizing the softer bokeh wide open which is a mixture of less sharpness in the corners and less contrast because of fewer coatings. These 1.4s will be more entry level in price and capability unlike for instance the Sigma 14mm 1.4 which is a fantastic astro lens. It would be great to see Sigma adapt that lens to the Z system.

Reminds me of the AF-S lenses, where nikon knocked it out of the park with the 50mm f1.8G and the 1.4 version was a bit worse. haha. They learned their lesson there. It's been really interesting to watch the strategy as Nikon rebuilds and rolls out the Z system after all the losses they took being late to adapt to mirrorless and losing major market share. Nikon has always frustrated me with how slow they are to innovate, but when they do, MAN it's good and when they FINALLY release something, it's usually pretty solid.

The 1.4 line is also a nice way to fight back against Viltrox & Co. So far, Viltrox was a nice 1.8 alternative to the 1.8 S lenses from Nikon. Now no matter if you already have the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 or have been thinking about getting it instead of the much pricier S lens from Nikon, the 1.4 non-S version might be a better choice to get.

I'm quite curious about the 35/1.4 because the images I've seen so far look really promising, the weight and the price are just amazing and I guess the lens can have interesting character to it (I'm particularly curious to see what it does in backlit situations). What you said about the 1.2 S-line vs 1.4 S-line makes a lot of sense but apparently, for example Sony made the 50/1.2 GM first and then 50/1.4 GM I think two years after that. For me, the 1.4 is more compelling because of the size and weight and also price but as the 1.2 was launched first, it sold really well so even though there's probably not a big crowd of people who prefer the 1.2 over 1.4, it was a good move from Sony.

Great Video Matt and appreciated but it didn’t come from an angle that suits my particular case. Why should it of course but for me I have a different perspective. I keep nearly buying the 50mm I.2 for very short depth of field 3/4 or full length fashion portraits but apart from being very expensive it’s the size that bothers me specially when flying and carry on restrictions and it being generally heavy. Currently I switch to the 1.8s for this but it doesn’t quite give me the shallow depth of field I need in the environments I’m working. I take the point that this is not an s lens but if it’s better than the old f 1.4 and it has more character than the s versions then so what. I am praying for a 50mm z lens (no adapter use) in this line that is better than the old f 50 1.4 in sharpness and like the 35 1.4 s is small and easy to carry and has character.
@caleidoo
@caleidoo 8 күн бұрын
It won't take much to make a 50mm F1.4 that is sharper than the old AF-D & AF-S versions. For some reason, Nikon never made a sharp 50/1.4 - when Sigma could with their Art lens. The Nikon 50mm F1.8 AF-S was sharper wide open - even when the F1.4 was stopped down to F1.8 - smaller and had faster autofocus. The more expensive 50/1.4's were soft and glowing wide open. So it's not the first time Nikon has a weird product line up :)

I think that's an interresting choice, for many people a F1.4 is kind of a "must have" aperture and when we look at other brand most of the time they are either incredibly expensive ( like the sony's or canon's ) or a more affordable yet not cheap 3rd party like sigma's. With that lense nikon is maybe one of the very few 1st party to make full frame 1.4 more affordable than 3rd party, maybe not by much but for a 1st party it's still impressive since most of the time 3rd party are cheaper ( while being a little less reliable ), so as a marketing point of view it's a good call from nikon i think. Now we can have affordable 1.4, crasy good value 1.8 with specs as impressive as the much more pricier 1.4 from other brand and for the pro the 1.2. They just need to make more dx stuff now ^^

As a pro, I'm not very happy to be forced to buy a huge and heavy F1.2 to get the same pro level build & bigger aperture as other brands are offering in F1.4. Or go back to F1.8. An aperture of F1.4 used to be a label for a complete pro package. If Nikon wants to make more profit with pushing F1.2's, I can respect that from a business stand point, but from an end user view, it's not ideal. It would be different if cameras and lenses were a new product type, and they started from scratch. But it's not. People are used to cheaper F1.8's and pro F1.4's and an occasional very expensive F1.2. It was a system that worked and consistent and predictable. And still is, if you look at other brands. Now, they started their Z line up with $700 F1.8 primes, so it obviously limits Nikon's next move of course and a $1200 F1.4 lens makes less sense. But it doesn't mean we have to agree with it.

I absolutely love my f1.8 S Z primes. I am an amateur, therefore, the f1.2 lenses just don’t make sense, especially as I moved to the Z system, in part, to keep things smaller and lighter. I drool over the optics of those lenses and the 135 Plena, but to outlay that sort of money would make my beloved lose her mind! And that is where the non S fast lenses might be an option….I am not sure of the engineering to create a f1.4 non S 135mm, but I would definitely consider a 135mm f2 non S version! In fact, I’d go so far as to say “Nikon, take my money!”

A interesting perspective and insightful, but personally I'm a little upset with Nikon. I personally been waiting for a 28mm 1.8S, I don't understand why we don't have it yet! Also I really need some professional compact prime lenses like a 24mm f2, 28f2 and 35mm f2. I switched over to two Nikon zf's so all lenses I mentioned is a must have. I really need these lenses now! I have reached out to Nikon, but they appear not to be listening. Let's home Nikon is listening because some compact professional wide f2's would sale like hot cakes.

For a long time I have been glaring at the 35 mm 1.8 lens ... testing it a lot. Then when I nearly got to the point for a purchase. Nikon released this one. 35 1.4. ... And I thought, this is the lens ... then I realized it was not a S-lens ... so I was again looking at the 1.8 ... after some days I saw a video about the new one, saying it has more character and nice bokeh ... so ... maybe I am back in the 1.4 track again. :)

18:13 Why compare to old Nikon lens and ignore third party lenses? Tamron & Sigma both made an excellent 35 F1.4 for F mount - sharp from F1.4 - optically much better than the Nikon F mount 35 F1.4. Plus, it would make more sense to compare the current Nikon primes to the current market of mirrorless brands and what other brands offer their users. I can understand the logic behind this F1.8 & F1.2 concept, but as a pro I still miss the option to pay $1200-1500 for an excellent 35mm F1.4. It's the sweet spot of size, weight and aperture. The 35/1.2 lens will be enormous and huge. Let F1.8 be the affordable option, people don't hold them to high standards. I also don't think not making a good F1.4 has boosted the sales of the 85 & 50mm F1.2 lenses, given their size and price, they are still niche lenses. Few people buy a prime that is much more expensive than the camera body they are using. And lastly: Sony made an excellent & compact 35mm F1.4. It's not impossible.

Thanks for your video! But a good 1.4S would be bought by many instead of the 1.8S. A 1.4S is not only avoiding buying the 1.2S, but also the 1.8S. I am still pixellated!!! The 1.4S (which should also be priced between the 1.8S and 1.2S) makes more sense than the 1.4. There is NO reason to buy the 1.4 instead of the 1.8S. I agree that any Z lens is much better than the old ones (maybe the 200/2, I don't know?).

I'm actually interested in 35 f1.4 since 35 f1.8 is too close too 40 f2 and also more affordable (used for f1.8 is not too far off). Will hold off until some reviews on the differences among the Nikkors 35 f1.4G, Z and 1.8S. 1.2S would be too big and too expensive for me. Also, I'm playing with my new Viltrox 20 2.8 at the moment and most of the time to wide for my liking but I'm not giving up! GAS will need to be suppressed for the time being. Meanwhile, I could use my AIS 1.4 if I really need to! Your justifications for 1.4S with the 1.8S and 1.2S are common sense, especially from the business point of view.

@@thomasblauberger With the Z S line lenses Nikon seems to be swinging for the fences to make sure they're not only superior optically, but also have minimal focus breathing when used for video. I'm looking forward to seeing if they release more budget friendly f/1.4 lenses to see if their strategy is to deliver fast lenses that have certain compromises many may not care about. I know it's a complete departure from their F mount line, but it's intriguing if that is indeed their plan.

What i don't like in the Nikon community is that there are still a range of (old) stubborn people who still prefer to use their old DSLR because they think it's still better. This is not what a company let stay afloat. Nikon needs a new range of younger customers who like to do video as well and are more modern thinking. Otherwise you will end like Pentax.

There’s also plenty of us (old) Nikon guys & gals that went to mirrorless and never looked back. Some of us even date back to film & darkroom days. We tend to have more disposable income to invest in new tech than the kids (who all seem to be throwing $ into film.. 🤷🏻‍♂️), so it’s a tricky balance keeping everyone happy.
