Truly curious about this lens. I currently have a 35mm 1.8 and absolutely love it. Was about to pull the trigger on the 50mm 1.8 but now I’m second guessing. The idea of a pancake in a pocket sounds nice as long as it’s sharp at 2 or 2.8 since I mostly shoot there anyway.

The Tamron Z 35-150 2/2.8 is a lens that I agree with Jordan on, and enthusiastically recommend. It is truly a Swiss Army knife of an optical tool...it does everything...and does it exquisitely. My primary working kit has been greatly reduced and now includes just the Nikkor Z 14-24 2.8 (the definition of a perfect wide angle lens), Tamron 35-150, the 26 2.8 (for walkaround/street), the Z 50 1.8 (no brainer) and the old F-mount Sigma 100-400 w/FTZ for occasional telephoto needs; its performance is really surprising on the Z8. But, 90% of the time, the 35-150 is what is locked on to my camera. It's really that great.
@mcandelacom
@mcandelacom 3 ай бұрын
I am actually interested in the Tamron 35-150mm but my only issue is the weight. I would need to wait a few years for Tamron to release a lighter new version... Unlike Chris, I would be more interested in a prime 35mm than a 50mm. I heard the Sony version is quite amazing though

In my opinion, the best lenses are the 24-120mm f/4, 24-200mm f/4-6.3, and 28-400mm f/4-8. I am tired of bokeh, corner sharpness, or pristine noiseless images. Nikon's 50mm lenses especially are just amazing for focus stacking of product & scale models in studio because they don't focus breathe, be it the 1.2S or 1.8S. You won't get too much ghosting that requires manual editing because each individual frame align very well in the stacking process. These lenses were exactly the reason why I bought into the Z mount. RF and E mount lenses don't exactly meet my requirements in this regard.

Excellent points, @EXkurogane! I too, use the NIkkor Z 50 f/1.8 S for focus stacking small products with the Z8, and obtain good results after stacking/merging 10-50 images. However, I find that the IRIX 150 f/2.8 Macro lens does an even better job in terms of image detail rendition, likely because it is optimized for close focusing. Of course, the IRIX is MF only, but the deep focus throw allows for ultra-precise focusing.

I chose the 14-24mm f/2.8 over the 14-30mm f/4 because I wanted to have it for astro as well. It is much lighter than you'd expect and a joy to shoot with. It is more limited in focal length which means changing lenses if I want to go above 24. Happy with that choice. I chose the 100-400mm over the 70-200mm f/2.8 as I get more range if slightly less optical quality. Still happy with my choice on that. I bought the 24-200mm before the 24-120mm was out. I'd have chosen the 24-120mm if that option had been available at the time. I also have a 35mm f/1.8 prime and I love it.

I love the 50mm f1.8 Z lens. It's a phenomenal lens and the extra cost for it is well worth it. The 85mm f1.8 does a great job as a portrait lens, image quality is outstanding. I love the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 as an all around lens for both photos or video with the large aperture. The other great lens that is light and very versatile is the 24-120mm f4. Great job Nikon on these lenses.

The Z mount range is pretty incredible for lenses, but to be completely honest, I do find them hella expensive. Right now my only two Z mout lenses that I use are the 28mm f/2.8 anf the 40mm f/2. They are both cheap, excellent, small and lightweight. Everything else, well I just use F mount lenses with the FTZ II adapter on my good old' Z6. Works like a charm, I don't see a perforamnce difference with my DSLRs and the image quality is still excellent from those lense son a 24MP sensor. I don't know how they would fare with higher res cameras, or much faster focusing cameras, but one thing for sure is that I won't be buying any of those for at least a few years, so I'm goo there ! Lenses like the 50mm f/1.8G and the 85mm f/1.8G on F mount work so tremendously well on the Z6, and the image quality is still excellent (especially when it comes to the 85mm). That's one of the huge advantages of the Z mount in my opinion : excellent Z mount glass, and then adapter for tons of mounts, including F mount and E mount (!)

If the new 35 mm f/1.4 for example is still expensive for you then you are probably looking for budget lenses which costs no more than 300 €. The outstanding lenses were never really inexpensive even during the F-Mount days. Now you can buy used.

Funny you mentioned the 50 and 85mm f /1.8 G F mount - I never liked them much even on my super old D610. Also on the Z7, my 24-70mm f/2.8G non-VR (now sold) looks like junk in the corners when shooting landscapes and I wasn't even trying to find faults 😹 Now I'm using only the 24mm and 50mm /f1.8 S, can't afford to get a telephoto yet, absolutely nothing to complain about. Costs wise Z lenses aren't expensive but hard to find used examples where I live - too many Canon and Sony users who only trust other people's words instead of looking into the systems on their own. I broke that D610 and obviously could have switched systems but still stayed with Nikon: - Canon RF lenses are either cheap junks or super expensive - a carryover from DSLR days (don't like the ubiquitious 24-105m L, not my focal range) - I never liked any Sony bodies, night and day difference compared to even first gen Z6/Z7. Lenses are hit-and-miss - Switching to Fujifilm would cost the same or slightly more than Nikon Z and I'm stuck with crop frame, also not into dials much.

For wildlife primes I've found I really like the 400 f4.5 + 1.4 tc. It gets you to 560mm f6.3 which is very close to the Nikkor 600 f6.3 at about a $700 discount with the additional benefit of enjoying 2 different focal lengths.

Though Nikon was a bit slow ‘out of the gate’ with mirrorless, they’ve not only catched up with the rest, but are now class leading in almost all categories. As a semi-retired fashion/beauty photographer, I’ve left the days of bags of cameras and lenses behind me and I’m happily enjoying the pleasure of compact Q and M cameras. But if I would ever need to go shopping for a DSLM system again, it would be Z-mount.

I still hope to get a 15-35 lens that takes filters. With the 24 I do not have enough range and it does not take polarizing filters with usual 100mm systems and the 14-30 is only f/4. Somehow it is always a compromise. The UWA lenses by Canon are the only thing I miss these days shooting Nikon again. But therefore I get the 180-600 and the 24-120 as well, awesome lenses.

Everytime I see a Nikon camera, I just think of these photographers at the olympics, most of the stuff mentioned here is proper overkill, but good to see Nikon diversifies a bit with bodies like the Zf or small lenses like the 35 1.4 or 40 f2. That 40 f2 would be my first lens, such a small fine package, keep the 1.2s to the olympic papparazis lmao

The 24-120 f4 has been my favourite lens I've used/owned across 8 years and 3 systems, aside from the Voigtländer 40mm f1.2 which is a very different type of lens. It's just that great. I really wish Nikon had more low profile, pancake-adjacent lenses since that's what had me leaving the system again. Fuji and MFT just offer more choice in terms of size and form factor.

You are right with every lens you mention but to me it‘s a typical choice from KZbinrs like you who have unlimited access to all these expensive lenses without buying them. There are lots of people out there who can afford the 24-70 f/4 (which you mentioned) and one prime lens. And my recommendation is always the 40mm f/2 and the 28m f/2.8. Both are not the sharpest lenses in the world but they have a certain look, they are light weight and don’t cost a fortune. I use them often on my Z8. It‘s a great combo for street photography.

Hi Chris, I love your videos and have followed you and Jordan for a few years. Thank you for all the reviews you do. I recently sold my D5500 and D7200 with all the f mount lenses to upgrade to the Z50 and Z6ii bodies. Z50 for travel is awesome. I chose the Tamron Nikon branded Z trio for the Z6ii because of the f2.8 affordable pricing and added a 1.4xTC for the 70-180 f2.8. I then added the 24-120 f4S lens after seeing the reviews and I agree with you, it’s the best walk around lens due to the extra reach and image quality. But then I saw the Z180-600 and that is a must for any armature for wildlife and will also works great with the 1.4xTC. With this setup I can pack the trio plus TC in my compact camera backpack with the 24-120 mounted on the body and bring along the 180-600 in the Ape Case I purchased for it. Only 2 bags with a tripod and I’m covered. Thanks again and keep those videos coming. Dave Drake Coldstream BC

Do you know how much longer we have to wait for Nikon to discontinue the unwieldy, and unattractive Nikon Z50mm f1.2 lens and finally come out with a travel friendly 50mm f1.2 like Sony has for their camera system or the EF50mm f1.2L that Canon has? I do have the Nikon Z85mm f1.2 and the Nikkor Plena 135mm but those I don’t mind taking out of the house for photoshoots. But for a walk around 50mm lens it would be nice if Nikon hired a design team to help with the manufacture of a 50mm f1.2. Aesthetics do matter.
