i have used both of them ...yes 1.8 looks sharp but it has more contrast which gives pictures an unprofessional look. 1.4 a way ahead for portraiture , very pleasing skin tones and colour production. And one thing that i have noticed is 1.4 highlights are much better controlled and produces a better balance of colour, shadows and highlights. one thing more sir , please improve your analysis. 1.4 makes pictures smile. 1.8 is a harsh lens...good for a budget.

Since the depth of field is too narrow at f1.4, I usually stop down to f2-2.8+ to get the subject in focus and have better sharpness. So choosing either one will not really matter to the pictures for me.

as with all lenses if you need the extra speed get the f/1.4 and if you want to save a bit of money, get the f/1.8. You can't really go wrong with either one of them.

Agree! Sold my 50 1.4G for the 1.8G! It is sharper.....the 1.4g is fairly soft and not a great lens IMO

Ive got the 50mm f1.4G and enjoy using it however I am aware the f1.8 is considered sharper. This was the reason why when I purchased the 85mm Nikkor G I went for the f1.8 ( allegedly sharper ) over the f1.4 ( not least because the f1.4 was a lot more expensive too ). Given the high ISO capability of modern sensors having such wide apertures is becoming less important, and super wide apertures are only useful if you genuinely want that very shallow depth of field. Of course money being no object I'd go for the faster version of any lens just because ultimately it's there if I need it and the rest of the time I can simply stop the lens down 😃

I had the 1.4 and rarely used it on 1.4 on low iso's on a summers day your looking at 2.8 , both have chromatic aberations at widest apertures

Better is a subjective term here. Is the 50mm 1.8G better at reaching f/1.4? No, it doesn't, and that's the point. Sometimes you put up with things being a little less than perfect to get that extra speed and drive, yes? If you are going to split hairs over sharpness lets be fair and admit the bokeh isn't as nice (and is smaller in terms of blur circle) than the 1.4G with it's 9 round blades.

I've had the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 previously, and found it not to be as sharp as my 35mm f/1.8 or 24-70 lens or my 85mm f1/.8 lens. I will be purchasing the 50 1.8 today. Thanks for this video. Made sense with sharpness, they have just made it faster and less work for the photographer in the Profile Corrections in post processing. I think for the price difference, it's not worth going to the 1.4 unless getting the Sigma ART series, but even that has serious chromatic abberation.

hi. I just bought a Nikkor 50mm 1.8g on your recommendations. you rock. but I think at f/1.8 there's too much fringing for high contrasts. if that normal with it? it should I go for a replace? thanks for the advice. would like to hear from your dear

The thing is that they all want to make beautiful and dreamy bokeh or bloored background with F1,4 and F1,8 but they still want to be perfectly sharp. I don’t understand

Prince Bharti I know right?! It’s shameful how the “Morgan Holtzes” of KZbin are so negative to Video creators when they don’t have the motivation or talent to make their own videos. Its usually those people who never create anything that are the harshest to those who do.

Which lens has the sharpest ??? 1.4 or 1.8 ??
@mostirreverent

get the 60mm micro, especially the older non G lens. not much is sharper. The 1.4 or 1.2 may give more light, but the shallow depth of field at those limits makes them almost unusable at short subject ranges. I'm sorry that I bothered with the 50 at all. I never use it. I should have just gotten a flash for my D3S...

Thumb down - 1.4G bokeh is way better because it has 9 aperture blades. This means that 1.4G's bokeh is smoother.

I'm not too sure where you are coming from with this. I've seen your video on the 85mm and you said pretty much the same thing. I realize that you are really talking to the cash challenged but jeesh!. I have the 50mm f1.8G sp.edition from my Df, a 50mm f/1.8D and a 50mm f/1.4G. If you want to talk value....OK, buy cheap and get what you pay for, but PLEASE don't tell people that the 1.8's are sharper, they are NOT! The 50mm f/1.4 blows the f/1.8's out of the water. The 50mm f1.4 on my Df is fantastic and the 85mm f/1.4 on my Df takes my breath away and forget a speed light, you just don't need one.

that doesnt mean 1.8G is better than the 1.4G only bcs it is sharper, it is a common problem for a really fast lens to be a lil bit soft in the middle, if you stop it down to 1.8 the 1.4G is noticeably better than the 1.8g at 1.8

Alvin Liu This is not true, I compared this two lenses in same aperture f/1.8 and the conclusion is: the 1.8 is sharper and less chromatic aberrations. I know many people thinking 1.4 is better for the aperture and price but... I have this two lenses and 1.8 is the winner for me

I find that Nikon needs to revamp their 50mm line up. Nothing is really sharp relative to Canon f/1.2 L or Sigma 50 f/1.4 ART let alone Sony's Zeiss glass. Even the expensive 58mm f/1.4 lacks the sharpness of the lenses previously stated. I wish Nikon would get it together. I've shot the 50 f/1.8D, 50 f/1.4G, and the 58 f/1.4G. From what I remember the f/1.8D was sharper than the rest but still didn't have the image quality of the Canon, Sigma, or Zeiss. Just an opinion after searching for a 50mm, I still don't own one.

you are wrong. the f1.8g bokeh is noticeably worse than the f1.4g. yes, the f1.8 is sharper. overall output the f1.4 is slightly better. if you want to save cash get the f1.4d. that lens good. it just has a clunky focus.

Not all modern cameras. If you work with high megapixels you need best lighting. Higher iso makes more noise on high megapixels cameras like nikon d800 810 850. But if you have avarage megapixels like around 20-23 yes 1.8 would be enough
