I, too, have the 80-400 on a D850. When I go out to the pond in the morning I set the shutter speed on 1/1000, f/5.6 and I usually shoot manual exposure. Lots of birds, waterfowl, herons, dragonflies, flowers, etc. so I don't know what I'm going to be shooting, but it will all be handheld. I've had this lens at least 5 years but didn't use it much until I got the D850 a few years ago. Now, I seldom take it off except during the warbler migration season in the spring when I use my 500 F4 G lens and shoot mostly from the cab of my truck. I use the 80-400 for almost everything else even though I have a Nikon 24-120 lens and a Nikon 105mm micro. The 80-105 is just so handy and versatile and it's light enough to carry and shoot with comfortably (I'm almost 80 years old now so that means something to me).

Thanks for watching and commenting Clifton. I just went into my photography studio and I'll give you two guesses what lens was sitting on my D850? Yep, the 80-400mm. It''s a great all round lens.

Thanks for this review Adrian. As an underwater photographer, my lenses all tend towards the very wide end of things. On occasion, I would really like a long lens for topside shots. I'd been looking at a 200 - 500 to pair with my D500s, but after handling one, I realized it was just too big and too heavy to be dragging through the bush in British Columbia or hand-holding in a bouncing boat in Indonesia. I came across a gently used 80-400 and grabbed it while I could. It's significantly smaller and lighter and has lots of reach on a cropped sensor especially.

I had version 1, but sold it for version 2. I recently re-discovered my version 2 in a box in the storage room - I intended to sell it after buying a Sigma 150-600mm, but never got round to it. But recently I bought a D780 SLR, and decided to retry the 80-400 because it is easier to carry it around. I use it in similar ways to you. I have decided to leave the 150-600mm for the D500 when on tour (by car) for birds, wildlife etc, and the 80-400mm for easy everyday carry long distance use on the D780. With a wide-angle on my D810 for landscapes when touring, I've got all angles covered.

Hello Adrian when I saw your title I said oh wow perfect timing. I have recently purchased the Tamron 18-400 f/3.5 to 6.3 for Canon. I’m in the process of testing it out so far it’s been very versatile with that 18mm. I have taken some sport photos of my grandkids and they have really come out very good I’m still learning it’s capabilities and so far I haven’t taken it off my camera. Your images taken with that 80-400 are amazing hopefully I can get half of what yours look like. Have a great weekend my friend. 🙏🏼 📸

I’ve been deciding between this and the 200-500. What gets me about the 200-500 is that it’s purely a wildlife lens, but I really want a hiking lens that can shoot short telephoto also because changing between two telephoto lenses in the field isn’t quick or easy. Also the bokeh between the two, the 80-400 clearly comes out on top. And I’ve come too really appreciate nano crystal coating/multi coating on my lenses. Used, the 80-400 is only a $100-200 more than the 200-500. I think if I can get the 80-400 used I’ll go for that, thanks to this video. 👍

Excellent long-term review Adrian! These are always my favorite types of reviews. There are 100 "spec" reviews that come out right after something is released but I always prefer the real-world extensive reviews. I myself have never owned a rather long zoom lens but I am quite curious about this new 100-400 that is on the roadmap. I seriously hope it's somewhat lightweight ;) I'm also considering looking at that 2x converter myself and just using my beloved 70-200 f2.8 VR S with the converter. Seems like a nice financial and weight compromise ;) Cheers and hope you are doing well!

Thanks so much for watching Rob. Yes that new 100-400mm has my interest. As you say it depends on the weight, but I dare say it will be heavy or same weight as this lens. @@adrianalfordphotography no, I currently have my 16-35, the 24-70 (which i rarely use), and the 70-300. I've looked at the FE 100-400 GM lens but can't justify it til I start traveling a bit more. I recently got a Nikon Z50 with the two lens kit (16-50mm and 50-250mm) and the only thing I'm really wanting is some more significant reach. Unfortunately there really aren't any telephoto lenses for the Z series, and I feel like those that are supposed to come out sometime in the near future may not be great options either. The 100-400 S line will certainly be out of my price range and the 200-600 will be ridiculously too big to put on the compact Z50. I just recently heard about this lens after looking at the F-mount nikkor 200-500mm and sigma/tamron 150-600mm and it seems like it may be a much better choice with the FTZ adapter.
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I have used the 80-400mm with the Z6II and FTZ adaptor. Mmmm mmm? Well, it's a bit hit and miss to be honest. I hear Nikon are making a new FTZ adaptor and maybe that might make things better? Personally I think the Z lenses perform far better than adapted F lenses on the Z cameras. If the 100-400mm S lens is out of your price range, then I think the 80-400mm will be too. It would be slightly cheaper, but not by much I think. So I would just save my cash just a tad more and buy the 100-400mm S lens. I'm betting it'll be better optically and in image quality.

Nice review. This lens hasn't been off my D850 since I bought it a couple of months ago. I hand-hold it most of the time if my subject is moving. The lens is very manageable in size and weight. The AF is fast, at least for stills, and the glass is sharp. I thought long and hard about the 200-500mm but the 80-400mm is is obviously more versatile and is more suitable for my needs. Like you, when trekking around I typically carry 2 lenses max, with zero regrets. Well, in truth I would probably want more reach on occasion if I had a 600mm. :)

Thank you for the review, beautiful shots! I understand any extending zoom lens will suck in dust but I've read on furms that this lens in particular is problematic in this regards, have you faced this issue? Did you ever need to have it professionally cleaned? Also, have you found the 400mm limiting for wildlife? Appreciate you're thoughts. Thanks

Thanks for watching. I have never had to have the lens pro cleaned. I only had the small issue once where I had a few grains of sand get in from shooting on the beach. But that sorted itself out with continual use. Because I'm using it on a 45MP D850 I crop in on my shots and only on a few occasions have I wished I had a 600mm lens. But I have to remember I bought this mainly for travelling. So I can't complain really. 🙏

I'm about to buy a used combo which includes this lens with a Nikon D850 for 2k. I'm nervous because this lens I've seen for sale new for 2100 and it's selling to me for 500. Not to mention that D850 is going for 1500. Apparently because the seller has upgraded to mirrorless. Shutter count is only 14000. Fingers crossed🤞

Hi Adrian, have you used this lens on the Z series camera bodies, ie. Z6 Z7 in particular.?? If so, what are your thoughts in regards to focus speed and accuracy ?? Reason for asking is, I'm thinking about dipping my toes into the Nikon mirrorless world. A small step at first, maybe the Z6, or Z6ii. The thought of maybe having to start changing from my F mount lenses to Z mount to be able to get the best out of the new system is daunting.

Hi John - I have used this lens on my Z7 as well as the 70-200mm F mount. You can see it in action in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHfTaIWQjNWAiNE. I think you will always get better (very slightly) performance from native Z mount lenses. Personally I’m waiting to see if a Z8 is released. Will see…

Hello friend, I bought the new version 80-400mm recently. I was interested to see that you didn't "stop down" the picture examples in this video, and took most of the pictures at 5.6. Are you ever tempted to drop down to 7.1 or 8.0 for sharpness? It doesn't seem that you need to, based on your awesome photos, but I find myself adjusting aperture up to 8.0 for sharpness, at least on my Nikon D500. Thanks!
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the time of day I’m shooting and what I am shooting. For example today I was photographing birds mostly sitting on trees. The aperture was around F7.1. The 80-400mm is excellent at all apertures. The sharpness difference isn’t really that massive at stopping down I personally found.

Hi Adrian, great video, have you tried this lens on the Z series with the adapter, if so how did it perform?
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes I have tried this lens on a Z6II with the FTZ adaptor. For me, it was a bit hit and miss. But that could have been me not setting up the focus right on the Z6II? And it was done before they updated the firmware improving the focus. If I was a Z owner I would be waiting for the 100-400mm S line lens. I think the native Z mount lenses perform much better and are far more silent than the adapted lenses. 🙏

Seen this a few times now, I have the 80-400 adapted to my Z9 but I am interested in the Z 100-400 but I have not found a comparison between the two. It’s the autofocus speed that I am most interested in as well as the quality but if the images coming out of the 100-400 is not much better I will stick with my trusty 80-400. Have you done a comparison between the 2 ??
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t done a comparison but I’d like to. I dare say that Z 100-400mm would perform better natively on the Z9. How much though? But the big question is the image and performance worth the substantial price difference between the 2 lenses? Thanks for watching 🙏
@Photographersforyou
@Photographersforyou 2 жыл бұрын
@@adrianalfordphotography that is the question , how much better image wise, but I still feel the af performance speed wise of the 80-400 would be slightly better because of the stepping motor on the 100-400, but I don’t know!

Great review, I also have the D850 with this lens, its a great combo. My copy, I dont know if you have noticed also seems to back focus at closer objects under 20 meters towards the back only when set to Live view, have you noticed this ? And Unfortunately the front element has gathered a lot of dust (does not affect performance however, but is irritating), any ideas on how to clean it anyone ?. As to the autofocus with VR for birds in flight it does affect the final image sometimes, like a little ghosting so I switch it off, curious as to the active version mode why you have it set on that ?

I'm struggling with getting sharp detailed images from this lens for shooting wildlife with my Z7ii. When uploading them into my lightroom and zooming in the clarity just is not there at all even though I feel my settings are 'correct' and I know I had the shot in focus...im shooting in a difficult setting on a moving boat for marine wildlife (obviously tricky settings) but I have the VR and Active modes on and a high shutter speed. .. But I'm not getting sharp clarity at all and I don't understand why? I keep my settings at F5 / 5.6 iso as low as possible to avoid noise (between iso 100-500) but I'm really struggling with the lens at the moment! I've seen many positive reviews like yours and obviously it's a good lens and people seem to be getting sharp images with it but can't understand why I can't seem to get the detail in there 🙈 I've been googling and can't seem to find any useful tips so any advice would be absolutely amazing!

Have you calibrated lens using auto fine tune on camera? There are tutorials on KZbin how to do it. ISO I’d have between 100-2000. Also focus set to dynamic area af on small. It could be the FTZ adapter not working correctly too, is it updated to latest firmware? Maybe best to see a pro Nikon camera tech shop about it so they can sort for you.

Yes it is. However the D5300 is an APS-C or DX camera. That means if you put this lens on it, it would crop in 1.5 times. So the lens would then become 120-600mm.
