Welcome to the Nikon family! We are a pretty good group once you get to know us. My hope is that the corporate cultures will mesh, each company will lean on the expertise of each other and out of that will come some amazing products. I look forward to your insights on video and to learn some skills here at your KZbin home.

I’m a Nikon shooter. I have a Z9 and Z8. I shoot a lot corporate photo and video and the ability to switch back and forth from 14 bit 45mp RAW to 10bit SDR or Log is so powerful. For a lot of Nikon shooters this presents an interesting situation. Before I went with the Z9 I had two Z6’s and actually considered a Komodo OG. But the CFast card and RF mount turned me off. I didn’t want to have 2 lens systems. So it was nice to see that at least the Komodo X got a CFx-B slot. Still the RF mount though. Unlike Sony and Canon with their respective cine lines, Nikon doesn’t have any upward mobility. For my purposes though the Z9 and Z8 are absolute beasts. Instant start up. Instant switch from one mode to the other. Camera set up and quick access menus stay true to the mode you’re in. But if someone’s video abilities and needs exceed the Z9, there is no where to move to without going to another system. So this may actually help increase sales because, take me for example, would love a “Komodo Z”. Or a “Nikon C70” designed by RED. Something less hybrid perhaps and leans more towards video. Active cooling etc. This is amazing news and has kept me buzzing all day. I’ve been a RED fan since I saw Greg Williams do that shoot with Megan Fox for GQ magazine back with the RED ONE. Lastly, to put the companies in perspective; RED has 220 employees. Nikon has over 20,000.

I’m really intrigued by the z8. I also have rf lenses so in the short term, Iwould still lose quite a bit of money if I sold those lenses and got z mount lenses. In a couple years, I could see a move to Nikon depending how things shake out
@seanirl773811 ай бұрын
As a shooter that misses shooting with Nikon, I moved over to Sony, this is awesome news. It will be interesting to see what Nikon does with the acquisition if they get it. Video shooting was what brought me over to Sony. While there are more features on this side I still miss the feel in hand and use of Nikon cameras. They get this so right. Subjective yes, but so true for me.

I currently own an fx3 and r5 as well. R5 has been great for stills and fx3 for the xlr inputs BUT I’d 100% switch to Nikon if they implemented internal R3D.
@danielvilliers61210 ай бұрын
With the Z9 an now z8, they have moved passed Sony's as they have internal Raw now in every format to 60 fps 8k. Now with red acquisition I expect RED raw formats and its red worflow and color science. This is the part that have been lacking in Nikon (LOG implementation).

Great video! I would only want to see red REDCODE raw on the Nikon, because I think Red‘s color science sucks compared to Nikon Z9/Z8. Nikon has more Alexa like color than the brown skin tones on red in my opinion

I'm so stoked for this. I do mostly stills and I've switched between every system and finally landed on Nikon. Nikon is the best, bar none. Their bodies and lenses put Sony and Canon to shame. Jarrod from RED was doing an interview yesterday on Scott Balkum's channel and basically said the processing units in RED cameras are not nearly as good as Nikon's because they didn't have the money to R&D one. He also illuded to that being the reason that the AF isn't great on their cameras. He sounded very excided for RED to get their hands on the Nikon processing unit. That might give some insight as to where things are headed.

I only caught a little bit of the end of the stream. Rewatching it now! Would be cool to send in KX and stuff for a hardware upgrade down the road. Doubtful that would happen tho lol.
@alex-chicago-8011 ай бұрын
This was for sure a patents acquisition. So some of those codecs will make it over to their future line of prosummer bodies. The biggest thing is they now own a top of the line video line of cameras. They will for sure move away from the RF mount and bring their Z mount over the new RED bodies. The biggest thing here is that Nikon makes their own glass, which will make it very intriguing. Nikon cinema glass? That's exciting for sure.
@TylerEdwards11 ай бұрын
Now that would be interesting but I hope they don’t make the focus opposite like their still lenses haha
@721MrG10 ай бұрын
In Z cameras you can set your prefered direction for focus CC or CCW. Not only that I think you can set prefered direction for shutter and aperture dials when it comes for stills, it was possible even in their DSLRs. There is no reason to not implement it in MILC. Nikon was thinking about focus direction with Z line, because they know that a lot of the potential new users may come outside of the Nikon space. @@TylerEdwards

Can't wait for the Nikon Z9X Talon 🙃 I think we will for sure see a crossover of tech in Nikon's high end models and most probably exclusive to Z9 successors. Canon has to be nervous with this announcement. I think Nikon is going to use RED's global shutter sensor as a straight up competitor to Sony instead of having to use Sony's sloppy seconds and delayed availability of sensor tech.

It would be very cool if RED and Nikon built a larger sensor fabrication facility in the US. They might even get federal funds to help. Sony fabricates many Nikon sensors, so the current RED sensor production may stay mostly the same. A new $3k camera would be very interesting, either a Nikon Z8R like the Canon R5C or a RED GILA like the Sony FX3. Keeping RED mostly distinct, except for using the Z-mount, and Nikon mostly distinct, except for implementing REDCODE Raw, would leave space for this hybrid division. If REDCODE Raw could be implemented on the Expeed7 processor via firmware, even only for 4K60, that would be cool for the Z9/Z8/Zf/Z6III. The Expeed8 would hopefully add enough processing hardware to fully implement it for the Z9II, etc.
@TylerEdwards10 ай бұрын
Ya, that would be epic! Only time will tell. Pretty sure Nikon makes their own sensor for the Z8/9 (or they designed it maybe?) so it would be super cool if they used that infrastructure to mass produce the raptor sensors or something!
