I would buy this camera even if I never took a picture with it, just for the incredible wildlife views allowed. Some people on You Tube are getting absolutely amazing views with this camera. Binoculars are nice, but can't equal this. This thing is astounding for the money

Ben, I never comment on video's, however having done a ton of research in every nook and carny of the internet trying to get a decent in depth review of this camera, I finally found it. Great video. As a semi-pro-photographer, I was laughed at by my pro-photog friends when I bought it. They no longer laugh at me. I would say that 90% of photography is the person behind the camera. Seriously, and that is what we should teach.....Great composition, exposure control, depth-of-field and other things people with no experience do to create good vs. bad photographs.

Ben Schmanke One thing I haven't been able to ascertain on this camera (since I don't have it yet) is what the smallest f-stop is that you can shoot at, like for macros. Yeah you can do macros at under f8 (that's the only mention of aperture I've heard of yet on this camera) but you won't have much DOF. Not a deal-breaker, but it would be cool to go as low as f22.
@AuthenTech9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for your comments! This is an interesting point, and I'll have to check it out and get back to you. Being a cmos sensor and not dslr, I'm not sure the same rule applies.
@AuthenTech9 жыл бұрын
***** I double checked, and you are correct, when in manual, the smallest you can stop down is f/8. I did a macro photo test, and yes, from f2.8 to f8 you gain a bit of DOF (at least a few inches), but no way to go as low as f22.
@SuzanneRenfrow9 жыл бұрын
Ben Schmanke Thanks, that's great to know! A few inches of DOF at close range is a LOT when it comes to macros. Along with focal length and distance from subject, DOF is a function of the sensor -- with my Nikon D7100, at f8 the DOF is less than an inch when right up to a bug (with a macro lens @ 90mm), as an example. Well my P900 is still on backorder, dying to get it!

I bought this for myself on my birthday yesterday, I just cannot wait for my trip to Yosemite next June. I was there 4 months ago and all I had with me was my smartphone and I missed so many opportunities... I found my DSLR too cumbersome to carry around also by the time I change my lens it's usually too late and I've missed an opportunity.. well never again with this little baby. Great review, it's convinced me I made the right decision... I bit the bullet and traded in my Nikon D3200. No regrets.

I have a P600 and find it an excellent travelling camera. It is light and the zoom is extremely flexible in daylight. The viewfinder is a bit dinky but does the job. I understand they have improved it in the later models. I shot a lot of hand held video of a sailing regatta recently and it came out very well in HD.

First, good review that shows something from the camera and not just video zoom ins like on other "reviews" :) But 1 thing: The target audience wont care about sharp photos? What? If i can zoom like that i want to capture the moment as good as it can :) I want to buy that camera but im struggling if the image quality is good enough. I have an rx100 mk1 and it can produce really stunning pictures. If the p900 would be on the same level with hyper zoom that would be awesome.

Indeed a very helpful video. I have been waffling around the Nikon/s B700, the Coolpix P610, the and the Nikon P900 which you have reviewed. I think you have sold me on this model. After all, it is the long reach zoom that I like.

Regarding poor lighting conditions, I just choose very slow shutterspeed (the camera's very efficient image stabilisator might handle even a one second shot) to avoid digital noise and produce rather impressive image quality.

Yes, you moved neatly through most of the features of this camera without getting bogged down in technicality or coming across boring. I cannot believe Nikon. I remember when the P-500 came out about 5 years ago, how many in the industry ballyhooed them because they were to opposed to the compact zoom feature in cameras as it sacrificed quality. Nonsense! I've taken some stunning images with this camera standing next to others with very expensive add-on lenses. I had pretty much emasculated one guy in front his date with his old Minolta that couldn't come close to keeping up with my fantastic shots. I took twice as many shots at a higher res than him and he wasn't very happy about that. Oh well.

I have one on back order :). You're right about DSLR users digging this camera for the focal length. I use a 150-500mm super-tele for wildlife and the P900 is going to open up a whole new world of photo opportunities for me -- now I'll never have to skip taking a shot because the animal is too far away. I've seen several test images that a friend (a very excellent wildlife photographer) has taken with this camera, and I'm impressed, really impressed! The image quality is great. Now I'm curious how this will work for shooting birds-in-flight -- can't wait to get my copy and field-test it!

Hi Ben, thanks for this detailed review. I use nikon p600. And it's p900 wowww !...But I would suggest that this camera is not good for long exposure photography because it has f2.8-6.5 only (for p600-f3.3-6.5). It is very good for for its telephoto performance. As u said 'The insane 83x zoom, 2,000mm telephoto lens'! the p600 has 60x zoom and 1536mm. it shold be a very good camera for travelling.

Thanks Ben. I'm just waiting for mine to arrive. First thing I am going to do is purchase a filter to protect the lens...I think that is one of the down sides to bridge cameras. Damage that lens and you are up the creek without a paddle :( It would have also been nice if Nikon had put a hot shoe for an external flash on this camera - as Canon do with their bridge cameras - and made the body more robust so that it was better in inclement weather. "TheSnobar" states that there is a firmware update to enable raw format. Can you confirm??? Cheers!
