The D3000 and D3100 are two of my favorite Nikon DLSR's to hand carry on vacation. (no strap) 1. They are small 2. Light 3. Comfortable to carry (small hand grips) 4. They are not expensive so I don't worry about (damaging them) 5. Both take great over 10 MP photos. I take the D3000 when I want the CCD sensor look and the D3100 for everything else.

Thanks so much for doing these videos! I've always dreamed of owning a DSLR camera but they were always too expensive. I just bought one of these as my first DSLR. A lot to learn! I have had some experience with DSLR cameras I've borrowed my Mum's a few times.

Thank you! And as for the camera choice, it's a lot of what I was able to get. For instance, in a few months the 3100 video will be made. I have some boxes of cameras I'm going through right now before I pick up new cameras to make. I need to make some floor space in my studio. :D

hello my AF area mode and Focus mode will not let me change because of currant settings and I am not sure what setting is not allowing me to access it.

Check your mode dial (video 1 and 2 go into this in detail) and see if you're set to either full auto or one of the scene modes. My guess is that the answer is yes and that if you switch to one of the PASM modes it'll work correctly.

Just took some pictures and moved them on to my lap top and realised they have come out as NEF files and my laptop doesn't recognise this type .......where am I going wrong ?? I went back to shooting menu and selected jpeg normal from RAW and nothing changed

This uses NEF for raw. NEF is the Nikon raw format. Adobe DNG converter is free and will turn them into DNG files. You're not doing anything wrong. Camera companies that try to lock people into their ecosystem by using proprietary file formats are the ones doing something wrong.

Thank you David for your reply. However after searching around I finally realised I couldn't open in that format due to the UAC setting on my laptop had been set to disable, which stopped me from opening the pictures. So all is good, but will keep your nugget of info. Thank you again, these are the best pictures I have ever taken since having this camera from new, I don't do tech, so it seems I have the perfect camera for me, thanks to your tuition @@DavidHancock
