Nikon D3200 in 2023, With Sample Photographs.

I dust off my old Nikon D3200, take it out to my local woodland to film some b roll video And discuss it’s capabilities in 2023. Whether it is still a viable camera to use in 2023.
It may not have the latest and greatest specs for photography or video, but it is still a great camera as long as you work within its limitations.
The video includes sample videos and photographs shot with the D3200.

Great video, love this little camera. My first dslr last year, as much as these seem limited, it helps me develop my skills. And I find the sensor to be very nice, m42 and nikon glass work well, if you fancy canon lenses get a canon. Get a dummy battery. Tough cameras 1 I dropped down a flight of stairs. I use with vintage glass so autofocus isn't an issue. I believe that quality footage from this camera, when upscaled and edited, make a very nice video, also shout out to excellent sound

If one is just starting out in photography or video, definitely, I think getting older generations of gear is totally worth it because their specs will still deliver decent results. Easier to push to its limits like low light, framerate, dynamic range etc, but still very much useable. Great share and test.

Thanks Keith, agreed, I learnt to work around the limitations of old gear like this and it taught me a huge amount about how to minimise noise etc. I might not have learnt that so quickly if I had a camera with better specs. But secretly this is a back up video just to keep the algorithm happy until it stops raining here and I can actually create some decent content.

This is the first official camera I’ve gotten and I’m blown away at how compatible it still is for today. Shooting in Raw, adobe 10 bit (I think) all the features I can achieve with it for $200? It’s been a very decent entry level for me!

Thank you, the Nikon D3200 is a great little camera, and the Nikon 35mm f1.8 g dx is the best lens to put on there. And a very good price second hand. Perfect to teach yourself photography with, and if you don’t like it you won’t loose any money if you decide to sell it on.

I just picked one up (D3200) for $150 USD with an 18-55mm lens. I already have a D3000 with an 18-105mm lens so will use the bigger lens on it when it arrives. Really looking forward to it. When I got my D3000 I was a little bit disappointed with the quality (it's from 2009) so older technology.

My first DSLR. I never used the 18-55 kit lens. I got the Nikon 35mm F1.8 prime lens and the Nikon 18-200mm zoom lens for it. The 35mm can take decent photos. I just switched to Sony mirrorless last year and also bought a Fuji mirrorless for my wife. I shoot mostly with those two cameras these days. Once in a while, I take out the Nikon.

@@INTAL115 it's a decent zoom lens. not as sharp or fast as the prime lens of course, but it can take some decent shots. used it for several years. recently traded it and the 3200 for a Canon 5d classic.

If anyone can help, I just got this camera and I am still learning but I do have a question: the video is really grainy and I have no idea how to fix it or what settings. I already have it on 1080p 30 fps but other than that I’m confused. Thanks for the review!

The grain is caused by trying to record video in Less than ideal conditions, with probably the kit lens on. With the kit lens it needs to be very bright, like a sunny day. Indoors or in a shaded area like a forest even on a sunny day you will struggle because the camera will need to use such a high iso that it introduces that grain to the image. The only lens that you can record acceptable quality video with is the 35mm f1.8g use it at f1.8 to let in as much light as possible. You also probably want to shoot at 24 or 25 fps again to gather that extra bit of light. You need to use a shutter speed of 1/50s. The camera needs to be in manual. You need to focus manually because again in less than perfect conditions the autofocus will struggle. The D3200 can do reasonable quality 1080 if you know what you are doing and are prepared to learn. But ultimately nobody buys the D3200 to shoot video.

I would avoid the Sony simply because lens choice would be very limited, because it has a lens mount standard that is dead and was never popular. I wouldn’t get the canon because it’s 18mp compared to the Nikons 24 mp sensor. Canon lenses tend to be either cheap and nasty or very expensive and lovely. The Nikon d3200 is better than the canon on specs and in my opinion has better lenses. There is another option if you can stretch your funds a little bit further and that is the Sony a6000. The Sony a6000 is a fantastic camera with a wide choice of lenses that are available to suit all budgets. The Sony a6000 is still considered a modern and relevant camera, it has all the advantages of being mirrorless as opposed to the older dslr canon and Nikon you mentioned.

I remember, I bought the D3200 nikon from ebay for 700$ in 2013, my iphone 13 pro-max. is doing the job far much better by many times than this garbage, it is now among much of the junks I'm having in my backyard.

Agreed Would still take the 10 year old camera then you’re crappy over priced phone much cleaner photos and let’s be honest Samsung phones from 10 years ago have better resolution then you’re phone could pray for and after 2 years you’re phone will be outdated and not supported anymore true junk Atles the camera has us after 10 years unlike your phone
