From the fb group "Nikon D700/The Legend" ""When you understand what exactly happens in a D700 sensor, then you will fully realize the reason why many photographers like me went back from our shinning newer cameras to the Legendary Nikon D700. So...... We need to go deep in the technology of the sensors in order to understand how great the sensor of the D700 is. There are some factors that separate the D700 sensor of any other Nikon camera sensor. About D700 colors: What makes the D700 colors so special (including excellent skin tones) is its unique CFA together with a unique algorithm which applied to its sensor.(different than the D3 and D3s ones) After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating. The color discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic color. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single color. So, we are coming now to the most important off all the factors which called "Tonal gain" Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth. THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop) The explanation: This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-as an example- the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area. So, let's see why this makes the difference in dimensionality and depth we see on many D700 shots. Light is a signal. This represents the tonality (colors, contrasts, details) of the subject. Its strength is defined by shutter speed and aperture. Pixel area (Photosite) is an antenna that receives the signal so it affects how much light per pixel can be gathered. The larger it is, the more light can be collected by a single pixel. BUT, The size of the photosite defines its native signal gain as well. For a camera to record the maximum amount of micro-contrast and depth off a good lens, it requires low photosite density for higher native gain. Tonal gain is NOT a dynamic range. The higher the native gain, the bigger is the gap between the peak of the gain and the noise floor over the same signal.- Photosites exist at various densities within the size of the camera sensor. Higher megapixel sensors have a higher density and lower native gain. The ISO defines the applied gain on the photosite so that it can receive a weaker signal. Increasing the gain raises the noise floor. The Analog to Digital Converter (A/D converter) converts the gained signal into digital information. The quality of the conversion is influenced by Bit Depth. The Signal to Noise Ratio firmware (SNR) separates the signal (the detail) from the noise (the noise) right before making the RAW file. If the converted gain is low, it will have a harder time figuring out the difference, therefore removing more signal. So the quality of the TONAL GAIN matters greatly final image-making. The current ideal photosite density is 12mp for the size of a full-frame sensor (Nikon D700 - 8.5 microns is ideal) This is a short list with some full-frame cameras and their pixel pitch. Full Frame Sensors Cameras Nikon D750 (5.9 microns) - 2014 14 bit Canon 6D (6.5 microns) - 2012 - 14 bit Canon 1Dx (6.9 microns) - 2011 14 bit Canon 5Dii (6.4 microns) - 2008 14 bit Nikon D3/D3s/D700 (8.5 microns) - 2008 - 14bit Canon 5D (8.1 microns) - 2005 - 12 bit

I wrote a very similar comment above, before seeing your comment. I've just bought a Nikon film camera F80 and an F100, and I decided to buy a decently inexpensive FF digital companion, that was the D700 I picked. I wanted Z6 or Z7, but stupid Nikon doesn't make FTZ adapter for its own brilliant screw-dive lenses. D700 is the cheapest FF DSLR from Nikon today, unfortunately service period was terminated two years ago in 2018.

I am trying to find one in good shape as a backup to my beloved D750. I love the build quality, the manual controls, and the colours.. wow. 12 mpx also are enough for me, as I rarely print more than A4 and in any case I have the D750 for that. Differently than most recent hi MPX sensors, no need for the latest and sharpest lenses to get good photos. The grain at high ISO is also special and for certain photos it looks pleasant to my eyes. The downside is that spare parts are not available anymore.

The cheapest way to shoot full frame (for me). I bought my Nikon D700 for € 160 (almost 30,000 shots), plus a 28mm 2.8 D for € 60, a 50mm 1.8 D for € 50, and an 85mm 1.8 D for € 130. Everything used but like new. And I can use the lenses on my Nikon F-801 that I received as a gift (with a Sigma 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 & Nikon 70-300mm 4-5.6 G). @Irfan I’m sure u mean a D5300 which is a Dx Format. If you are going for the pixel count, sure. There is no other reason to choose a cam of this type. But I’m all about full sensor. If that’s the case, the d700 is a much better cam. The d5300 only if you just want to mess around with. There is a 24-120mm I believe that will cover a decent range and will do the job just fine. There is no one lens I can recommend 100% because I don’t know what you like to shoot... if you want ultra wide, the 16-35mm f4 is a great lens, that u can add a filter on and distortion isn’t bad. My setup is 16-35mm, a 50mm and a 70-200mm. And I have a a few prime lenses, which I use more often, and that’s because I like the sharpness and low distortion. Hope that helps. 🥃🥃

Hey there… so mirror up is a feature within all DSLR cameras that raises the mirror before you shoot. It’s preferable to be used with a timer. It raises the mirror for you to use the back monitor instead of the view finder. Ones you have your shot in place click away. You will have clear sharp images without worrying about the mirror slap back and causing motion blur when it comes down. It essentially makes the camera Mirrorless.

Great review, also because you also have the newer cameras and can give us your objective opinion as a serious photographer. I use the D700 with old ais lenses bought for 60 euro. Image quality is far better than a canon 80d with modern lenses which I sold to buy a D700. On the mirror slap: it is there but in in single shot it is not that bad. On the other hand the Nikon D3 is far better!

The D3 will have better mechanical parts and the shutter is good for 300,000 I believe. The D700 was a way to get into the prosumer market, and it worked like a charm. It paid of for Nikon, and we all ended up with some great choices. The slapback of the D700 is very minor, unlike the D810 this one kicks like a shotgun, and handheld images are ok at best.

I been using that as a last ditch effort backup when my main camera is unavailable. The phone has as much feature as an entry level DSLR in terms of manual control. (It's a samsung galaxy s9 if are curious) I bet a full frame interchangeable lens dslr with a proper image processor will do significantly better and probably compete with the 20mp APS-C camera in terms of overall performance. I say this about all camera review videos. IF a person need a lot of ISO because of low light then its not ideal any way. Proper lighting with flashes and strobes always takes care of low light shooting anyway. I know I know. some people will say I'm shooting night landscapes or night wildlife and so forth. Once again. that D700 will perform better with a decent ISO with faster and better glass anyway. get better glass before thinking you need 12,800 ISO setting and so forth. a 1.8 or even 2.8 lens will always get better low light shots over bumping the ISO way up. Getting the mirror out of the way is not the best thing about mirrorless. You very seldom see a mirror issue in a pro level camera. One of the best things is being able to see the exposure on the fly. IMOP
@Aperture35
@Aperture35 4 жыл бұрын
@MrDCB1234 To be honest, there are so many factors that lead to a mirrorless being better, and neither claims alone stand true to being right. Someone earlier wrote to me and said you will never get a sharp image out of a high MP camera. Which is so true, that’s like taking a photo with a magnifying glass through the lens. And that’s the reason, you don’t see high PRO MP cameras from Nikon at least beyond 24MP. All the Pro-Sumer cameras are the only ones that venture there. The D810, it’s such a great cam, but sucks at event photography. IBIS makes mirrorless and mirror cams the best they can be. Being able to see exposure on the fly is available on the d700 and D810, it’s not unique to mirrorless. Like I said earlier, there too many factors, and to make mirrorless even better for Nikon, again, are the new z lenses, sharp, sharp, sharp! I appreciate your thought and input, I guess I needed to clarify my statement 😂😃🍻... thanks you and I hope to see more of you around here in the future 🥃🥃

Lost me at “all cameras since the D700 have the same color...” I am paraphrasing but the D700 color have been unsurpassed in terms of color by any camera. I have a D810, and D750. Newer cameras perform much better in higher ISOs but the high ISOs on the D700 have film grain like qualities that newer cameras don’t. I got rid of my first D700 and regretted it. I got a second one and I will never get rid of it again.

I prefer this cam over both the other two cams u mentioned the same. Reason you like the grain is because it’s a 12MP, just like the new A7sIII. @@Aperture35 I am copying from my group: "There are some factors that separate the D700 sensor of any other Nikon camera sensor. About D700 colors: What makes the D700 colours so special (including excellent skin tones) is its unique CFA together with a unique algorithm which applied to its sensor.(different than the D3 and D3s ones) After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating. The colour discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic colour. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single colour. So, we are coming now to the most important off all the factors which called "Tonal gain" Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth. THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop) DUE TO THE MICROCONTRAST, THE D700 SENSOR SEPARATES THE BULK OF THE SUBJECTS IN THE FRAME WITH A UNIQUE WAY. The explanation: This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-a an example- the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area. So, let's see why this makes the difference in dimensionality and depth we see on many D700 shots. Light is a signal. This represents the tonality (colours, contrasts, details) of the subject.

I was a Nikon shooter for 30 years. I was loyal to the end. The last Nikon I owned was a D700 and I made a good living with it. I sold all my gear three years ago to take up an overseas position and now have returned and will take up photography again as an amateur. I now have the luxury of choosing with a clean slate. This is the problem for Nikon. And its called the Canon RP and the lenses Canon has for it. Nikon used to be the resetta stone of lens compatibility and Canon crueled their base with the new EF mount. Now Nikon has made a fundamantal mistake and I would suggest it will be fatal. They Nikon F mount was not carried through to the Z Series. Yes, you can buy an adapter, but its not a good result optically. And Nikon has not met the market with its lenses prices so the Z is not selling. If I was to buy a used D700 and their 17-35 AFS F4, used, I would be up for $2000 Australian dollars. In comparison, I can buy a NEW Canon 26mp RP and a NEW 15-35 F2.8L IS for $3000. If I was to instead buy the Canon 17-35 F4 EFS IS and the adapter, that combination would set me back $2200 tops. So why would I regress back to 2008 for the same money?

Fuji cams are great, one of the best in the market. As far as switching over to Fuji because of the mount, well, seems odd as you would have to do the same with Fuji and buy new lenses or adapters. Nikon did a great thing by switching mounts and keeping the ability to use the f mount. The fmount was too mechanical and clunky, it needed something finer to take care of video and photo at the same time while increasing sharpness and quality.
