I did the same comparison with my D850 and D700. I got similar results. Colours of the D700 look actually nicer. The difference in resolution is only noticable when zooming at 400%. D850 AF system in low light conditions is another story of course.😁

I would expect the D700 with the prime lens to be sharper. Did you use it full open?
@Adventure8

The D700 holds up well considering it is over 12 years old . The D850 needless to say has far greater details being 45 MP vs the D700 being 12 MP.

@@Adventure8 Thank you for your answer but if you would closely look at your video at 13.51, I see the following phenomenon. The picture on the left the D850 appears sharper. OK you say that is because of the megapixels. However even the text in lightroom (7PZ_8198.jpg) is less sharp and that cannot be caused by the camera but maybe by the rescaling? It also affects the brandname Harley Davidson and so on. The D700 with 50 mm produces very sharp pictures in these situations.

Totally, actually it would have been ideal to use the same lens. Anyway I think it just goes to show that the MPX difference doesn't seem decisive, even for large prints. Yes, in the case of having to make severe crops.

I have D700, D 850, I had D750. Under the best conditions D850 is better, but it goes down for difficult lighting (both intensity and sources(!) colors. D850 noise at ISO800 is worse than D700's, at levels unacceptable for me. At Iso 1600 D850 fails to impress. But! Photos of my grand children, my cats, humans and furrys from D700 has something out of this world. I don't know how to put it in exact words, something like a Strad vs a $1000 violin. I use 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 50 1.8D, Sigma 50 Art and 60mm macro (MICRO), 105mm DC. D850 will stay for video and macro stacking. I think I'll buy another D700 for spare parts. And for the soul. A camera has a soul. Otherwise, a picture would be lifeless...

There is not any way to get 3d pop shots like these out of the D850 www.flickr.com/photos/58919412@N00/49504719018/in/dateposted-public/ The explanation comes from this group: facebook.com/groups/330500120976297/ and that is the following: "....So, we are coming now to the most important of all the factors which called "Tonal gain" Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth. THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop) DUE TO THE MICROCONTRAST, THE D700 SENSOR SEPARATES THE BULK OF THE SUBJECTS IN THE FRAME WITH A UNIQUE WAY. The explanation: This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-a an example- the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area. So, let's see why this makes the difference in dimensionality and depth we see on many D700 shots. Light is a signal. This represents the tonality (colours, contrasts, details) of the subject. Its strength is defined by shutter speed and aperture. Pixel area (Photosite) is an antenna that receives the signal so it affects how much light per pixel can be gathered. The larger it is, the more light can be collected by a single pixel. BUT, The size of the photosite defines its native signal gain as well. For a camera to record the maximum amount of micro-contrast and depth of a good lens, it requires low photosite density for higher native gain. Tonal gain is NOT a dynamic range. The higher the native gain, the bigger is the gap between the peak of the gain and the noise floor over the same signal.- Photosites exist at various densities within the size of the camera sensor. Higher megapixel sensors have a higher density and lower native gain. The ISO defines the applied gain on the photosite so that it can receive a weaker signal. Increasing the gain raises the noise floor. The Analog to Digital Converter (A/D converter) converts the gained signal into digital information. The quality of the conversion is influenced by Bit Depth. The Signal to Noise Ratio firmware (SNR) separates the signal (the detail) from the noise (the noise) right before making the RAW file. If the converted gain is low, it will have a harder time figuring out the difference, therefore removing more signal. So the quality of the TONAL GAIN matters greatly final image-making. The current ideal photosite density is 12mp for the size of a full-frame sensor (Nikon D700 - 8.5 microns is ideal) This is a short list with some full-frame cameras and their pixel pitch. Full Frame Sensors Cameras Nikon D750 (5.9 microns) - 2014 14 bit Canon 6D (6.5 microns) - 2012 - 14 bit Canon 1Dx (6.9 microns) - 2011 14 bit Canon 5Dii (6.4 microns) - 2008 14 bit Nikon D3/D3s/D700 (8.5 microns) - 2008 - 14bit Canon 5D (8.1 microns) - 2005 - 12 bit

Okay, maybe it's me. I'm not sure which one of these I have the most trouble with. Shall we start with the duplicated intro? This video of comparing "old school to new school" was pretty useless (sorry to say). There were no controls spelled out including different camera, but same lenses, same settings, same ISO (which ISO was used wasn't displayed on the file, or spoken), no comparison of noise at higher ISOs (i.e. low light shooting), use of LiveView (since this was a big improvement in the D850), side by side RAW shots (only scale changed D700 shots as JPG), lighting, white balance, picture controls? What was controlled for in this video? Bike movement? Seriously, then we have to see an unedited video of the guy's A##? That pretty much says it all.

Can I ask you how does the MF confirmation feature on the D700 works? Is it good? Is it accurate. Would it work well with a 200mm f2?
@Adventure8

The focus confirmation in the view finder of the D700 works really well with any manual lens or auto lens used in manual. Dot means in focus, arrow to the right means rotate clockwise from photographers perspective and arrow left means counter clockwise. Thumbs up 👍

Rocky Cassiano . Of course budget needs to be considered. If you like portrait photography, consider AFS 85mm f1.4 or the 105mm f1.4. They are expensive. The AFS 24-70 zoom f2.8 is also a great lens. Second hand, quite reasonable in price. I also have the 28-300 AFS. That was the first AF lens that I got for the D700. Hope that helps.

Wonderful results indeed. I think the conclusion is if you need to print huge sizes, go with 850, if you work for web, stick with 750, otherwise not worth the upgrade. Change the lenses if needed, but keep the D700. That's what I will do. Thank you for the review, Griniflix. You have a pleasant voice.

Try using the same lens on both cameras, the definition of the image would not even be similar, and try to increase the D850 file in the same proportion, at least the D850 solves almost 4 times more detail, it's the law of physics

D700 can be used for any situation, subject to the lenses you have access to and environmental conditions. There are of course limitations but I guess like with any camera, it's working in and around those limitations that counts. The D700 is not the best sports camera, but it is good for action work (in the hands for a determined operator).
