And it will still live a long while yet. More than likely it will evolve into a hybrid. Only the mirrorless fanboys really predicted the demise of the DSLR. Wishful thinking I guess. Canon has a new flagship DSLR. Nikon has a new DSLR released and a new flagship camera to come.. Think about it, Nikon still has two film cameras offered on its website. If film is still around how long will the DSLR live? DSLR shooters just laugh at the mirrorless people and continue on.

I represent a tiny niche of the market as someone who owns fat heavy manual focus Zeiss milvus glass, in Nikon F mount because it has an aperture ring and Nikon F can be adapted so many ways. I'm excited for the D780 because I think ergonomically it will pair well with milvus glass and it's a DSLR body that offers good video capabilities and focus peaking. Right now the D780 is a unique product for having all those things. So 1. Great build quality 2. Weather Sealing 3. Ergonomics 4. No adapter 5. Focus peaking 6. USB-C 7. Two card slots that use inexpensive and widely used SD cards The only con is price, and a bit of patience should help with that.

As a working photographer, I've never run into a situation where DSLRs have failed me because they were DSLRs. That isn't to say there is anything wrong with mirrorless--they can be just as reliable--but until the DSLR is forced into obsolescence I see no practical reason to spend money on a new camera system. All my lenses are F-mount, so I have no problem with Nikon hanging onto this line for as long as it makes sense to. The D780 looks great but my D750 is a solid workhorse that gets the job done for me and earns me my paycheck. Yeah a new camera is always fun but I guess I've gotten blandly pragmatic in my middle years ;) Thanks Ted.

@@markshirley01 Hey Mark! I started with Fuji. Xt100, Xe 3? xt 20 too. Focusing was just not there, I went back to Nikon D3500 & 5600. They are lightening quick for focusing. For big community events I use a D750 & a Df but the weight is killing me. Recently went with a Canon m50 & a m6. Very pleased with them for entry video but the vote is still out for stills. They do focus fast though. Track better too. If I had a better back & was younger it would be the 750 (780? maybe?) & the Df all day long for stills. I suspect the D780 is out for me due to the weight. I am looking for lighter all the time now.

I fully expect Nikon to come out with more DSLRs. I expect a D850 upgrade for example. I am one of those shooters who much prefers an optical viewfinder. I’ve tried EVFs and found I much prefer an OVF. I like seeing the scene in front of me as it is, not as rendered by my camera.
@PilgrImageピルグリメージ
@PilgrImageピルグリメージ 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. Seeing the scene just the way as human eye sees before pressing the shutter is so important. Until technology reaches the point that EVF display just like human eyes display the real colours in our brain DSLR will live on.
@loco240
@loco240 4 жыл бұрын
Totally understand your viewpoint after using optical viewfinders for over 40 years. A couple considerations though. EVFs offer some significant advantages - ability to see in real time exactly how the image will be recorded by the camera (i.e. EV changes, scene mode changes, DOF, etc), ability to scroll shots in the viewfinder (no chimping), consistent brightness without blackout while shooting, viewfinder functionality while shooting video, improved reliability with no moving mirror, electronic shutter yielding capabilities such as slow motion video and 1/8000 shutter speeds, and etc. So I'm a little more open minded.
@TomNorthenscold
@TomNorthenscold 4 жыл бұрын
La Co I understand all the benefits of an EVF, while I might quibble about some that you list (e.g. reliability, blackout). EVFs lack one critical feature that an OVF has. An EVF can’t provide a real-time view of the scene exactly as it is with no post processing. That’s the clincher for me.

I said that several times before : DSLRs are still around for a while , there are millions of lenses sold and being used to this date , and even today, to see Nikon producing another telephoto lens namely the 120-300mm f2.8 with an F-mount is another clear indication that DSLRs are still around. For me mirrorless is not mature yet , Sticking to DSLRs .

@vokso11
@vokso11 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulconnors2078 it doesn't matter how many people will buy it, but it's a clear sign that Nikon keep investing in the F-mount and maintain legacy . Nikon is not stupid enough to just "dump" all its customer that purchased more than 100.000.000 lenses during the past 100 years. Even Nikon was clear when releasing the Z series : They said that DSLR will coexist along side mirrorless. DSLRs are not going anywhere anytime soon.

@@vokso11 Yes, it does matter as to who will pay $9.5K for a 120-300 f2.8. I love NIKON gear and lenses but some of their product intros and price points make no sense for MOST people who will buy their gear. It is because NIKON does make product/price point blunders that they find themselves with a diminished market share in their home country (JAPAN) and dire financial straits globally.

Paul Connors allow me to disagree respectfully ! There is no such thing as a lens for every photographer BUT THERE IS A LENS FOR EACH TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHER. Every photographer has different needs and they are not supposed to be the same as yours. If it doesn’t make sense to you IT DOES FOR THOSE WHO SPENT THEIR MONEY ON IT. Going through financial issues is a normal thing in the life of a company , and as far as I recall Nikon is NOT doomed yet so pls hold ur horses.

Great video! I commented that there would be continued DSLR development on that previous video you did. I’m a longtime, dedicated DSLR shooter. I don’t have that “itch” you refer to, but I think it’s great that Nikon is utilizing new advances gained through mirrorless technologies in further DSLR development. It’s always great to have new options and features. It’s funny, you still allude to some sort of demise to DSLR’s with something along the lines of: “is mirrorless something we ought to stick to?” Once again, stick with what you want and don’t worry about the continued development of DSLR’s as it will not be abandoned anytime soon. There will continue to be a lot of big bulky DSLR’s at those Olympics. And there are a lot of people like your friend. Why would you expect Nikon to abandon its fundamental Pro and industrial base that was rooted way before even digital came along? If anything, mirrorless is a side lab experiment (I can see all the mirrorless enthusiasts waking, looking up with a giant spotlight on them, like an episode of “The Twilight Zone”) which gleans new advancements that can be adopted to the main flagship line. But is also an option with a considerable customer base. Again, shoot and let shoot, what you will. Stop trying to predict the end of the DSLR.

I like shooting with DSLR and I’ve been wanting to upgrade mainly because I’m ready to move to full frame. I have invested in lenses over the years and to start over on a new mirrorless system seems daunting to me. I’m used to the Nikon system. I use my camera to for personal interests and hope to move over to some sort of business someday but as of now I’m still learning. I’m excited about this. It’ll give me a few more years to get my bearings. I also just like how DSLR’s feel in my hands. Traveling with the weight no. Part of me was tossing between having two systems. Mirrorless for traveling and family with smaller lens needs and hanging on to my dslr and what I’ve built for my other shooting. (My sons hockey and landscapes) I guess this just makes me feel like I don’t have to make a big decision right now. Buts me more time if Nikon will keep producing DSLR’s.

As an avid amateur from 2012, I have stuck by Nikon starting with the bridge P510 Coolpix, got bitten by the camera bug after I came back from a vacation to Europe with family, moved on to D3200 in the same year and after learning photography with the D3200 moved on to D610. Have a generous collection of lenses for the bodies. I'm rather comfortable shooting with chunky bodies and their lovely grips. I have had more joy from clicking on DSLR's. Every time I look at Sony Mirrorless (just put off by the menu system and formidable price of the lenses), I'm always reminded of how much equipment, I have for my 2 Nikon bodies, I have 12 lenses between them. I have had some great travel, macro, landscapes and nature fun with them: "pure" unfiltered fun: meaning have made no money at all with them: okay may be a $100 from selling a few prints on a website. The itch is always there to buy more, but have already enough equipment.

Thought I'd have a problem adjusting to the EVF but after a few sessions I got used to it. 50 years of photography has taught me a couple of important lessons: 1) the best camera is the one you have in your hand and 2) we need to emphasize to younger photographers that it's still mostly about skill. I own a Nikon D5 with a zillion autofocus points - I use a single focus point and still get tack sharp pictures even when shooting fast moving sports. Practice your skills!

A couple of years ago, after not having made the move from film (and relying solely on a smartphone), I decided to get back into photography by buying a DSLR. And then a funny thing happened-a photographer asked if I was considering a DSLR or mirrorless, something I didn’t even know existed at the time. After doing my research, I went with a mirrorless that has the look and feel of a DSLR and am very happy with my choice. For my own photography, mirrorless is the future (though I will be sad if/when companies stop making DSLRs).

As a full time corporate photographer I use a DSLR and mirrorless, depending on the job. The DSLR rules in the studio using flash and in low light conditions using flash. With a fast lens I see more through the viewfinder. The Mirrorless is great for silent shooting in quiet conditions and for non flash/lowlight work. it is also lighter to travel on a plane. So, Both are great and I hope they continue to make the DSLR cause I will update from my D5.

I'm a longtime Nikon shooter and, to be honest, am disappointed by the D780. Several years ago, I started using my D610 to do wildlife, sports and bird photography. The D610, while fine for landscapes and portraits, just doesn't have the autofocus, burst rate and buffer for fast action. When the D750 was released, I was tempted...but not so drawn to its 51-point AF system, 6.5 fps burst rate, D610 equivalent resolution and low light performance to pony up the $2K+ for one at introduction. When the D850 was released, it had (still has) everything...resolution, nimble AF, good low light performance, speed. It also has a price tag to match. Eventually, I decided to keep the D610 for landscapes and portraits and I added a D500 for sports, wildlife and other fast action. I think a lot of D6xx and D750 owners have done something similar in recent years. Tired of waiting for Nikon to release a true update to either camera, they've moved to the D850, the D500, Sony A9 or A7III. Those of us who still shoot with the D6xx and D750 haven't been impressed by the agility or speed of the Zs to trust Nikon mirrorless to what we shoot. We've been waiting for gen 2 Zs with improved AF for fast action (and added compatibility with a battery grip) or for something like a Z6 sensor in a D500 or D850 body. What Nikon has released is more like a refresh of Nikon's entry level full frame DSLRs. The D780 has the same resolution as the D6xx and D750, the same 51 autofocus points in OVF mode as the D750, and a negligible bump from 6.5 to 7 fps in burst compared to the D750. The D780 is also missing something both the D6xx and D750 have: compatibility with an external battery grip. A grip is essential gear for a lot of photographers who shoot portraits, weddings and fast action. It offers both extended battery life and the ability to easily jump between landscape and portrait handholds. I think a lot of Nikon shooters who remain with the D6xx and D750 value having that accessory available...at least as an option. Frankly, I look at the D780 and a see a 2020 version of the D600...a camera designed to attract APS-C shooters (D7500 owners, in this case) to the world of full frame photography. It may be successful at that but, for a lot of D6xx and D750 shooters, the D780 just doesn't pass muster.

D850 shooter here... Digital photography seems more at home in a mirrorless system. In fact, I see the first DSLRs as the first true “hybrid” cameras. I see mirrorless as the true digital advent that technology beckoned, and is now here. The function of a SLR mirror-however pleasurable it may be-is now, and will exponentially become, inferior to an EVF. Even if there was a D780 pop-up EVF option in live view, it would just make this another quirky in-between-a distant link, if you will-in the evolution of the camera. I see a future of better tools, ie., bottomless dual CF buffers and storage, global shutters and sensors, and other tech that we haven’t dreamed of yet in imaging. All things that will hopefully free all photographers to hone their craft for the betterment of the world. When I look at my beloved D850, I see a way to get ready for the future. A future, I believe, that has no need of a D780 and other cameras like it. Ted, thanks so much for videos like this that make us think!

I love using DSLRs and I thought the z6 was a bit small when I held it in a store. Great that now the D780 is available. Perhaps this is the best hybrid DSLR camera... for fast focusing phase detect in still mode for sports shooters and also PDAF mode in liveview for video capture. Although there is no 5 axis stabilization in body like z6, the D780 does have electronic VR stabilization for video and also FX VR telephoto lenses. Z6 does not have stabilized Z lenses as all stabilization is in the body. Still a popular camera among DSLR shooters in 2021!

I’ve been looking to upgrade to full frame, seriously looked at the Z6 but in the end I just didn’t feel comfortable holding the camera. It felt small, unbalanced. Plus battery life sucks. Then the 780 came out. Perfect hybrid coz you’re basically buying 2 systems in one case: optical viewfinder = DSLR, Live viewvinder = Mirrorless. Now all they would have to do to perfect 100% is to add EVF and and a reverse lens converter (not F -> Z but Z ->F)

One big reason for updated DSLR (w some mirrorless features) are available lenses. If Nikon made Z780, identical to this D780 but w mirror assembly completely removed...I'd bite (and many others I believe)! There is no Physical or engineering reason for mirrorless camera to have fundamentally different lenses. Mirrorless cameras are the future but along this lenses/mounts example I want to see other innovation put in, not just space removed out and smaller size sold to us as a feature (for some purposes it is but not in general). Mirrorless cameras are still in the Motorola Star Tac phase. I am waiting for a "camera Apple" (and I hope it is one of major current players as thy could push it through) which does NOT sell size as a feature but places more new useful capabilities into reasonable, long derived, ergonomical camera size . Things I want in: orders of magnitude stronger computing capability; active sensor cooling... Things I don't want-cameras designed for single handed usage (again, there is a place and market segment for those but not as default).

I've always been a fan of the D750 and have said it's probably the best all-around camera in the Nikon lineup for most serious hobbyists. There are Nikon bodies with more resolution, faster AF, higher FPS, etc., but the D750 gets a lot of things right for a lot of people. The fact that Nikon has introduced the D780 indicates they are still committed to building excellent DSLRs in addition to wading into the mirrorless waters with the Z platform, and I think that's a very good thing. Mirrorless is a game changer for lots of reasons and I love my Fuji mirrorless bodies, but for many shooters - myself included - there is still value in an optical viewfinder, and the bigger body makes for more comfortable ergonomics. That said, most of the improvements seem to be to limited to the rear screen and Live View. I realize there are plenty of very capable and popular cameras that lack a viewfinder of any sort, and that lots of mirrorless photographers choose to use the rear screen for shooting, but outside of setting up on a tripod - either in studio or outdoors - I cannot imagine most D750 or D780 owners using the rear screen most of the time. I suspect they are using the viewfinder. If that supposition is true, I don't think the core D750/D780 audience is going to get very excited about improvements that are limited to the rear screen. For instance, the image highlighting eye detect AF on the Nikon website is of a basketball player, but who it using a DSLR in Live View to shoot sports? And why wasn't the joystick brought over from the D850 to help quickly select the additional AF points? At its heart the D780 is a DSLR. Yet instead of letting it stand on its own merits as such, Nikon is trying to tell us it's something different: A "new breed of DSLR" that sports the "heart of a mirrorless camera." Rubbish. The way they are promoting and positioning it does a disservice to what is likely a very capable DSLR, dismisses their own mirrorless offerings, and insults its target audience to boot.

I think the dslr and mirrorless cameras will keep coexisting for the next foreseeable future. Not only is Nikon bringing out new bodies but also still releasing new f mount lenses. As you said, the D780 is essentially a Z6 so adapting new technology into a dslr body seem possible. My D750 just recently bit the dust, or actually swallowed a bit too much water. I did consider replacing it with one of the Z cameras but ultimately I needed a workhorse and familiarity got the better of me and I ended up with another dslr. No regrets whatsoever. I do think that mirrorless cameras have features/advantages over dslr's but dslr's also have features/advantages over mirrorless. Like it's been said, one can go with either and not regret it, it all just depends which one is better suited to your needs.

I like my cameras real, with viewfinders you can use even if the camera is off or the battery is dead, with sound and tactile feedback every time I take an image. I love the fact that I can swap lenses with my 40 or 50 year old Nikon 35mm cameras with no need for adapters. I couldn’t care less about “silent” shooting, 20fps burst rates, or a camera company that in this day and age thinks cameras should be replaced like cell phones every 18-months, waste and ecology be damned. Glad to see that Nikon is following real users and not vloggers proclaiming DSLR is dead or Wall Street idiots stating that cameras will die eventually. I just got myself a D750, but I will definitely buy the D780 later this year. Awesome video as always Ted!

I will give it a spin for sure. While I love my mirror-slapping Nikons I shot a lot with the Z6 last fall, and enjoyed the silent shooting with it. My work is often in environments where every image you take gets noticed because of the mirror banging away, with the Z you have the perfect stealth mode. Another Plus on the Z is the ability to control exposure compensation via the lens focus ring. Most of the time I shoot in Manual, but this comes in pretty handy in a pinch because you see what you get. I think Nikon will stick with Mirrors for some time, but who knows, maybe the D7 will be a Z ;))

A technical question: a lot of previews does not include the fact that you can do a long exposure with a D780 up to 900 seconds which is a really nice feature for a lot of photographers. Now, I see that the viewfinder cannot be closed like on the D8xx series for example or even on a D500. Meaning this is sort of hybrid between the mirrorless and dslr, not covering the viewfinder can still cause accidental light leakage? If so than the super long exposures are pretty pointless. For sure I would be annoyed to covert the viewfinder all the time with tape or something. Me personally take the D850 over the D780 for sure. Especially that I believe the D850's price is going to drop significantly in the near future. With that in mind using it solely for taking pictures I think the D850 just beats the D780 from every aspect.

I think the main thing keeping mirrorless from completely outcompeting DSLRs is the shorter battery life. If mirrorless ever catches up to DSLRs in that way, then I think DSLRs really would be on the ropes. Perhaps a way to help preserve battery life in a mirrorless would be to build a model that has a viewfinder like on an old rangefinder even if it is just for consumers and enthusiasts instead of professionals.

I'm a DSLR (and 35mm and 120 roll) shooter and I am tempted by mirrorless for the weight and size saving more than any of the whizzy gadgetry. I've also invested £k in F-mount lenses and don't have cash to spare to buy the same lenses all over again in a different mount. So I probably won't upgrade at all until my DSLR gives up the ghost; then I'll see what's available.

I checked out the D780 at my local camera store today. It seems like an excellent camera but the mechanical shutter is still too loud for dance performances. I own the Z6 and the mechanical shutter is quieter and I prefer an EVF now. I agree with your comment that mirrorless has much more potential for technical innovation. I am waiting for Nikon to fix the banding issues in its silent electronic shutters and to improve continuous AF. I am going to invest in the Z lenses from now on.

Nikon probably has a list of DSLRs that were in development for the past few years that they will release. This camera was probably in development 2-3 years ago. Plus as long as people are buying DSLRs Nikon is going to make them. The z system is two years from having a full line up of lenses and a pro body. I bet this year is better for Nikon with the successful z50, this camera, the d6, and a lot of z lenses. The only thing I would question is the price is a bit steep, $2000 would seem to fit with the current market. The d850 isn't much more and the z6 is currently $600 less.

I soldi my D850 and bought a X1D mainly because of synch speed and absolute colour depth. I miss the optical finder of DSLR in some situations and NO mirrorless of any brand can make up for that. This D780 seems the PERFECT companion to my Hasselblad ! Speed, video, cheap ( great) lenses on the used market, nice color science,live view with eye af... I think that the combination of the two worlds ( dark and mirrorless) can cover any assignment. Just my two cents!

I shoot with flash 100% of the time so mirrorless doesn't offer many creative advantages. By adding in what they've developed for the Z6 in terms of video this new D780 is kind of my dream camera. I don't shoot stills in live view and love the idea of getting on the ground, rolling around, climbing ladders etc to frame my shots. It keeps me connected to the scene, not to mention prevents the temptation to look at the results after every shot and boring my model/s. I've been tempted to upgrade to the Z6 for the video capabilities but wasn't looking forward to adjusting to a new workflow for stills, or buying into a new mounting system $$$$$ hehe

I am a Nikon (D)SLR user for about 25 years. I tinkered with the new mirror less and they are too small for me....especially if you start adding high end lenses that have multiple glass. So, I am excited to see a new DSLR and I saw your video predicting the demise of the SLR and I can see where that could happen, it will be a generational "thing" IMO. As the older SLR folks cycle out and the newer folks cycle in certainly SLR's could become the Rolleiflex's of the world...just not in our lifetime

Dear Ted, thanks a lot for the review! What I am interested in: What would be the noise of the mechanical shutter? As I understand, the electronic shutter is only applicable in Live View modus, right? So it would be like in the D850. Silent photography only possible in live view. For an even photographer like me, this is not really satisfying! For many indoor events like conferences or concerts the mechanical shutter of a D850 or D750 is just too loud. Many reviewers don't look at this characteristics at all, although it can be so importand. For me only the Nikon D810 is really low noisy with it's mechanical shutter. So I wonder, how the D780 will sound *without using Live view*.
