I shot this same field on my way to work from Grand Junction to Telluride. It was too bad all the smoke in the sky at the time. I managed to catch a pinkish purple sunrise through the haze but anything after sunrise was grey as can be. Also the yellow crop duster plane made a few opportune low passes while I was there. Pretty cool.

Nice vid Mark. I have started using this feature on my D850 and find it very powerful and simple compared with doing it manually as I used to on the D810. Before loading the layers I make basic adjustments (WB, exposure etc.) to the first photo and then paste these across to the others (I do it in Lightroom); it works well and keeps basic adjustments consistent. I also tend to apply PS’s photo align before blending, even if using a tripod - surprising how often there are tiny shifts between photos and PS is amazing at picking these up.
@MarkSmithphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I did the same thing. I shot these in RAW and made changes to one and then pasted them to all the others. I then exported them as JPGS and stacked those. I'll have to try the align feature next time.

Very informative! I hope my camera can do that, I've never noticed that feature in my menus so I'll have to check the manual. Bit late to the party on this one Mark, but I like the way you keep the unnecessary bits to a minimum - not long bought a D850 and have been watching a few tutorials on focus stacking, none of the ones I've seen covered the nuts and bolts of the camera menu & PS post processing as clearly and simply as your video. I need to check your other posts for more 'how to' info. Nice work, thank you.
@RonLykins6 жыл бұрын
Mark Another great video missing only one detail: you can only do this with an AFS Nikon lens. For instance in camera focus stacking does not work with my Nikon AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED Lens. Bummer! It will work with the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens, also the AFS 60mm micro. lenses I do not own, double bummer, so I have to use manual focus on my 200 micro, and do the focus shift manually , not good on a moving subject like an insect, Bummer. I understand that it has to do with AFS lenses having the focus motor in lens and the older AF lenses using the focus motor in the D850 or other Nikon bodies.

awesome informative , im new to photoshift shooting , My first try was with a sigma art 14 24 .2.8 on my nikon d 850 , i noticed prior to taking /checking the exposure composition the edges thru the lcd screen versus the edges after the camera has taken the images is alot wider , could you please enlighten me .
@antonoat6 жыл бұрын
I think I may be struggling to carry on without a D850, lol. Question is could it replace my D810&D500, I'm thinking maybe it can! Perhaps I'd better wait and see what the mirrorless Nikon has to offer. Great clear video, thanks Mark.Cheers from the UK.
@MarkSmithphotography6 жыл бұрын
Yes, wait for the mirrorless but I will say this. The D850 is the image quality that you love from the D810 merged with the speed of the D500. I sold my D810 not long after using the D850 but I chose to keep my D500. It is nice to have each. I will often keep the D850 mounted to the 500 f4 on a tripod and handhold the D500 with the 200-500. Awesome combo that misses nothing!

Nicely done video. I don't have the 850, but do the focus selections visually walking back as far as I want it to cover. I do find that the results end up just a bit sharper if I do the align option. (also, those are bales of straw, not hay... ;) )

@timphillips38736 жыл бұрын
D500 + 200-500 is also a good starting point- especially if you are into wildlife photography. Save even more by using a ball head instead of the gimbal also. A ball head can easily be a "poor man's" gimbal. This is my current setup, but the D850 has my attention as well. Mark uses both the D500 and D850, I believe. I can see he is taking a lot more landscapes now he has his D850. Not a coincidence!
