I’ve been a journalist for 30 years. Photography is always been a big part of my work. I’ve done a ton of sports, etc. I haven’t done much recently and I am renting a D850 to take my nephew, senior photos. So I thought I would get a crash course in this camera and your videos have been so amazingly helpful. Thank you so much.

Michael, THE BEST tutorial on the D850 I have seen, and I have watched dozens, I would go so far as to say the best tutorial I have seen on any subject! I have a Nikon background: D7000, D70s, F3 and F so I'm not a stranger, I have a degree in engineering (need I say more about what I look for in a tutorial :-). I am getting up in years, been retired over 15 years, and my memory isn't what it once was and I just got a new D850 that to me is the best , although I've only had it 1 week. My health and the pandemic have kept me inside much of the time for a few years so your tutorials are PERFECT for me! They are extremely professional, intuitive and concise. YOU have great communication skills and move at a pace that is easily understandable and know exactly which points to slow the pace, even repeat. I'm anxious to see what else you offer as I see this was produced over 3 years ago. And this all started when I searched "How do I get the single focus square back to the center on a Nikon D850"! Thank you and I wish you every success which you

Michael, I've been a serious hobbyist for over 40 years, but as I'm sure you know, life and work often get in the way. Thank you for the best tutorial, by far, I've seen. You saved me my most valuable resource, my time. Thank you! I'll be buying your video training.

There are many videos out there that talk about the Nikon D850. I have found that I rely on 3 of them and this is 4th and one of the best. I have learned more about focusing my D850 in the last 13 minutes than I did in over hours of other videos. This is well done and I plan on reviewing more of your videos and possibly buying products that you support or put out for purchase. Thank you.

What is the difference between boxes and dots? Why are there both? Does the camera focus at a box location or a dot location? Which ever is the case, what is the other shape for? In AF-C with one of the multiple focus points modes selected, does the camera look at all the points (or boxes), pick the one where the highest contrast occurs and focus there? Or does it average two or more points (or boxes) and focus at that average distance? In group mode you say it "designates focus within those four boxes". Does that mean it picks from those four boxes and focuses there? Or averages between the four? Or determines an optimum single point somewhere "within those four boxes" and focuses at that point? When you discuss the "a7" option you say you like it but never say (or show) which of the two choices you're recommending and why?

great video... I have been using mine for a few days. and here I thought that in d153 I was selecting the spot to focus ,I guess for a spot to focus I need the "S" setting. Question if d153 look at everything to focus, what it means the point we select? and what is the difference between auto?
@meenufnow5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for a well organized and articulate lesson. I find I've set up my D850 correctly for Auto Focus S using a single focus square bu;t I am consistently getting slightly blurred images mostly in my child portraits. Would I benefit by using one of the settings with many more focus points? I've owned many Nikon cameras and have never had a problem with getting well focused images. Thank you Lynne

@@MMavenThank you for responding so promptly. I shoot Manual, Raw Med file size in my primary slot with an XQD card and JPeg fine in my secondary slot. My ISO's are all over the place depending on where I am shooting but I try to shoot as low as possible. I also try to have the highest shutter speed to facilitate clarity and as wide open as possible for most light and I like a shallow DOF but even with f16 I'm still soft in my focus. I use a bunch of different lenses and have the same results. I have even used my tripod and still have blurry outcomes. My best results are closeup work on a still life. I use AF-S compose with half depressing the shutter to lock in focus and then move my camera to then recompose. I've been shooting for years and have never had this basic a problem. Should I try AF-C with kids and using multiple focusing squares??? Thank you. Lynne
@Tom_YouTube_stole_my_handle5 жыл бұрын
@@meenufnow There are two likely possibilities, one, your shutter speed is too low to arrest movement in the subject, or two, the subject has moved slightly once focus is locked. AFC would be better for children. As you've tried different lenses and can focus satisfactory on non moving subjects you can rule probably rule out any faults with the lenses or calibration. Try to get used to using AFC and back button focus for moving subjects, this means changing the shutter button over to release only. I would try the AFC D9 focussing setting.

Most reviews call for AF-C S, but how do you recompose? Recompose would set the camera to focus somewhere you didn't want it to. Do you move the single focus square all the time with the joystick? That gets tiring after five minutes...face tracking lock doesn't work too well either!

Your presentation here is really helpful but I have a few questions on AF. I have the D850 and have followed your autofocus set up process. If I want to set up Front-button AF setting using the PV button. I have mine set using AF- C / 3d. Is it more efficient to not use 3d in AF-C mode. Does the square have to pursue the target to confirm that it is indeed working as desired or is the acquiring and targeting done automatically in the dynamic 25 range with the square only having been used for initial target acquisition. The 3d mode as I use it, to automatically and visually track and focus erratic flight or movement. My current protocol is using the both AF-ON and Shutter-Release (SR) Button: I lock focus with GrP or Single Point targeting and the SR button for single point tracking and focus in flight, a thumb/forefinger action, but I think I'd like to move the tracking function of the SR button as I use it to the PV button. I have followed your instruction but seem to be missing something. My middle finger PV button does focus but does not do the target-acquiring tracking in AF-C mode which is necessary. I want to set that square constantly moving automatically during flight, constantly acquiring and locking on to the moving target. I want to have the SR button depressed for shooting exclusively once the target is acquired and focused, in Focused Release mode. Can you share that detail with me.
