The Nikon D850 has been such an amazing camera for me. When I’m in a landscape photography situation and nature is putting on a show, I get a sense of calm and excitement at the same time knowing I have the D850 on hand to capture what I’m seeing. I heard a guy on YT saying that one of his friends got over a million shots out of his D850. Now that is an impressive stat you do not hear that often. Also I have a Z7 (first gen) and it has that 45MP sensor that is on the D850 and the detail or resolution is just fantastic. I would save up and buy the D850 but I can’t see Nikon creating any new F mount lenses for it in the near future. In fact, I think Nikon needs to create a specifically photographers’ camera with some quality components like a Z version of the D850 and leave off a lot of the video hoohar but sell it for a bargain price. I think a specialist “stills” camera of high quality would sell well. Cheers

Totally agree, I still love my D850, have not "upgraded' to a mirrorless. Went to Africa last October, the camera still did everything I wanted and got great photos, even in hot, dusty conditions, bouncing around in safari trucks. With a long lens and the camera, the weight sometimes got tiring, (quite understandable considering now that I am in my seventies} but I have no plans to replace it in the near future.

That said, I recently purchased a pre-owned Z9 and I sold the D850 to help pay for the Z9. I now have the Z7 for travel as it is lightweight with a stellar sensor and the Z9 for its amazing speed and autofocus abilities. Hi Adrian, good to know you're still sticking to your D850! I've had mine since 2021, an upgrade from the D7200. It took me a while to master it, which in retrospect was a good thing since it helped me to bring some of the discipline I'd learned from years of film photography (I shoot film since I was 10 and never really stopped) into my digital photography. Now that I also have two of my dream F-mount primes (the 105mm f/1.4E and the 28mm f/1.4E) along a 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G just like yours, I don't see myself letting go of my D850 anytime soon, even if I manage to get a Z8 or whatever upgrade to it Nikon comes up with by the time I can afford it. Body is as rugged and reliable as they come, ergonomics is a dream, extremely customizable, and that oh so sweet image quality - the resolution, the color science, the dynamic range... Can't ask for anything more, if you know what you're doing and are aware of the perils of shooting a 45MP camera with no IBIS, especially with longer lenses. Speaking of which, I do miss IBIS and I do crave that sweet Z glass - that's why I do have the Z8 in my sights - but my D850 is not going anywhere. The only two things I miss in my D850 are 1.) the aforementioned lack of IBIS, and 2.) the fact that the F mount does have some good/decent 50mm primes (I have the 1.8G and the 1.8D, never really liked the 1.4G and sold mine after a short while) but no exceptional ones like the Z mount has. There is the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 HSM and the Zeiss Otus Distagon 55mm f/1.4, of course, but I worry about the reliability and color rendering of the former as well as the (insane) price and lack of AF of the latter.

I have had my original D850 since 2018, and have captured many thousands of photos with it, and it is still as reliable as ever. As a matter of fact, when I briefly considered switching over to mirrorless camera/lenses, I came to my senses quickly and decided that the D850 does all that I need it to and more. This past September, I purchased a second D850 as a backup and secondary camera. I have been into photography since 1958, and have no desire whatsoever to switch over to mirrorless. I know the D850 well, and will stick to the tried and proven workhorse. Thank you for this encouraging video and for everyone that may need a little convincing that they already have the best. It’s too good to trade for such little money and is best kept as either a backup camera or to hand down in the family for others to enjoy. I mainly shoot landscape now and occasionally take my 500mm with me you just never know when you might spot a deer. Anyone looking for a new camera bag i can highly recommend the Shimoda x50v2. With a large core unit i can carry the pf500, 70-200f2.8, 14-24f2.8 and my d850 with 24-120f4 lens attached. I use my roll top for filters and waterproofs.Plenty of pockets for batteries and other equipment . Yes its heavy but its the old saying if you dont take it with you 9 times out 10 you want to use it.

I got mine last year on my 62nd birthday in September. Before her I had my trusty D80 and she’s still going but mainly for B/W now. I’m still learning to use the D850 as it’s such a big jump up from my D80 but what amazed me was 90% of the buttons are in the same place and have the same function so it’s not as big a shock to my system!!! But I’m thrilled with her already not taken a great deal of photographs as the weathers been terrible here in the uk and I’m disabled so have to be careful but that’s not stopped me learning how to use her and set her up for all the photography scenes I love. My biggest problem is setting her up for aircraft as we have a couple of Spitfires fly over our house most days so I want to take a lot of photographs of them flying landing etc. I’m desperately saving up for a 80-400mm or the 200-500mm ??? The 80-400mm is probably going to be the one for me as I’ve watched your videos on it and the passion you have for this lens has truly been my inspiration, actually for the D850 to 😍😍😍 so it’s your fault 😁😂🤣 anyway keep up the great content and enjoy yourself taking some wonderful photographs in 2025, all the very best to you sir, and thank you again for all you do for us and your passion and honesty 😎😎😎

I still kept my D850 (and D700) despite owning three Z cameras….One very important reason for me is that I live in Canada and often shoot in very cold weather. Using this camera with gloves and the fantastic battery life, means it is my go to winter shooter. From Dec through April, it is tough to beat!
@paulharhen54442 күн бұрын
I have the D850 for the past 4 years or so. I use it for landscape, seascape. cityscape, nature, travel and architecture photography because of the 45MB sensor, battery life, and the ease of use/my familiarity. I also use it because the sensor is less exposed to grit, dust and the like compared to mirrorless alternatives when I am outdoors in the rain, etc.. Roughly, my skillset and the camera features are now in the same ball park. I also have a lot of Nikon f-mount lenses and Lee SW150 filters to go with them all. So I am totally invested. I did feel that it was not good enough for sports and bird photography, focus acquisition-wise, so I got the Nikon D5 just for these two categories. If Nikon comes out with a 65 MB or more sensor, I might consider a move. However as they are still manufacturing the D850, perhaps they could come out with a D850s or D860 with such a larger sensor too?? Wishful thinking..

I became a Nikon user 2 years ago with the D800 and the 28-70, which I fell in love with. Then a year later the D850 arrived and, although I was not able to notice many differences with the D800 (which in used market I believe still has a very high quality/price ratio), then I sold the latter and I have no intention of parting with the D850. I recently bought the 500PF, which is excellent for large or close birds, but is a bit short for small or distant ones; and I do not like the performance of the 1.4II teleconverter at all (while it is quite good on the D500). I ordered the III... we'll see... Thanks for these considerations of this immense machine.

I shoot aerial work, and my clients have remarked on how they can crop way in on the images and still get plenty of resolution. I want every megapixel I can get, and the D850 delivers. I've had it since the first week it came on the market. I just got a Z5, but it's just a toy.

I never had a D850, but it does represent the golden age of DSLRs with a magical blend of performance. I do have the Z7ii which I love - some say the Z7ii is the mirrorless D850, others say it is the Z8...not sure on that analogy. Resolution and IQ wise at least, I would say the Z7ii is the D850 equivalent.

I’ll never sell my d850 either. Every time I get it on my hands I still feel its reliability and robustness which gives me confidence while shooting. There are no buts to this camera.

There are number of photographers who have D850 have not bow down to mirrorless until their workhorse is giving the results, getting proper support and are able to still buy it! and sometimes I feel, this number is growing!!! BTW how does it fare in autofocus dept as compared to current mirrorless? I don't have D850
@adrianalfordphotographyКүн бұрын
The D850 still holds its own in autofocus, but you will find "certain" Z mirrorless cameras do better with tracking.

Great video that has obviously generated a lot of positive feedback. I've recently moved to an area where numerous airshows occur annually. My "longest" lens is the Nikon 70-200 so I need a longer lens. Since all the new information is posted for Z lenses, is there any advice on a good zoom for the D850?
@adrianalfordphotographyКүн бұрын
I would suggest you look at the 80-400mm or 200-500mm lenses for the D850. I made a video comparing them both. Hope it helps - kzbin.info/www/bejne/enayoGxprpqfoNk

Hi Adrian and a happy new year. I love my D850 wich I bought brand new in May 24. I use it a lot on our outback trips like last years trip to Innamincka and other outback places. I will most likely get myself a Zf this year for an upcoming trip to Japan, I think it will be a great choice for all the narrow streets, Bars and restaurants a.s.o. But on the next trip to the Flinders Ranges my D850 will be my top choice again.

I feel the same way with my d750. I haven't owned a d800 series and haven't really needed to. I can do big prints and stitch for even bigger prints if needed. However most people just want files for online or small prints. Unless you're a pro making money working as a photographer then there's really no need to upgrade or buy anything new. If the tax returns are great they do it, but if not then save that money for better things. Damn I still know people using the d700

I bought a used D 850 a year ago to combine it with my D 500 + 500mm f/4 for photographing birds; the performance is stupendous but I believe that the AF of the D 500 is a little higher in response speed; the possibility of cropping the images created is certainly a plus; I think that at least for now I won't replace it with the flagship mirrorless cameras of the Z series, I don't feel the need and I prefer to spend my money on photographic trips

When the Z8 was released and touted as the Z that would finally get D850 users to make the F to Z transition I thought the reviewers might be right, but so far haven’t come up with a sufficiently compelling reason to go to all the expense and trouble. Not yet.

I can empathise fully with your views. I still use an old Canon 6D, which is fine for my amateur ladnscape and travel photography. It doesn't have the dynamic range of your D850, but it is fit for purpose for me; bracketing for HDR merge gets round the occasional dynamic range issues. For me, it's about being fit for purpose, and also having a first rate sensor rendering, especially in terms of colour. It would be nice to have an R6 Mk2, which has a viewfinder just as good as an OVF and is more compact and has much better dynamic range, but it's a crazy amount of money to spend for marginal overall gain when I am not a pro...it's just not proportionate. Maybe it will be a used purchase for me next year...

So far the D7500 has being with me since 2019 and l want to buy me as gift for my 50 birthday. why not mirrorless? simple, I have all the gear for this system and I do now miss nothing. It's certainly still a great camera. While I much prefer my Z8, I still enjoy taking the D850 out from time to time to remember the best camera from before everything changed. When doing landscapes with the D850. I miss the ability to use shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds without going to bulb mode. I also miss being able to focus through a 10-stop ND filter. My Z8 and even my Z6 can often do that. The D850, no way. The D850 though has a slightly better dynamic range than my Z8. Something about the sensor having to also do the focusing limits it. As for the 500PF, they are getting pretty cheap on the used market now and they are said to be extremely sharp. Thank you, Adrian. You have motived me to get out with my D850 again soon.

The KZbin gear shills would like to convince everyone that these cameras are obsolete, and they definitely are not. They're still usable for everything that they have always been used for, and nobody is going to look at a good photo and notice that it was taken on a DSLR vs a mirrorless camera. I'm still shooting with a D750, and probably going to pick up a D850 later this year now that the prices are affordable. Also, F mount glass is more affordable than ever before. Sure, the Z cameras have benefits with autofocus, and some of the lenses are sharper (not always noticeable, or even a good thing), but as an amateur on a tight budget, I can't justify the cost. Plus, going Z means I can't autofocus my beloved screw drive AF-D lenses, and I love shooting with older glass.
