I got this lens a few weeks ago for my 4x5 to replace my Fujinon T300 lens which has almost no room for movements. I was shocked at how light and compact it is and so far the images look great. Can't wait to get out and use it more. Glad you're doing more videos lately.

I got this lens a while back. Not had a chance to see the video yet but look forward to it when I get back. Always like your reviews. I’ve got mine for 4x5 and 5x7 use.

The 300M is 4 element Tessar type lens. The Image circle is about 325mm and at F22 it is razor sharp. It does cover the 8X10 with some limited movement. It has become quite pricy in recent years, for good reasons. Those who use 4X5 and want a small light and sharp lens with plenty of movement appreciate this lens.

300mm f9 Nikkor M has a spec image circle of 325mm at f22, 312mm at f9. www.mr-alvandi.com/downloads/large-format/nikon-large-format-lenses.pdf Just barely covers 8x10 direct on NO camera movements (image circle require for 8x10is 312mm accounting for film holder borders. With an image circle of 325mm, there would be +/- 5mm margin which is effectively Zero camera movement). At larger exposures than f22, the image circle is smaller than 325mm.. Making the 300mm f9 far from an ideal lens for 8x10.

Hello Tony! Thanks for the lens review! I don’t yet have Nikon Nikkor-M F=300 mm f/9 in my optics arsenal. The only lens I have in the Copan №1 shutter for the 8x10" format is the Schneider Kreuznach G-Claron 270mm f/9. This technological lens has a single anti-reflective coating on the optical elements. I live in the Altai mountains and I am interested in photographing mountain landscapes.

Great video! My friend tested Fujinon C and Nikkor M, and the Fujinon is not as sharp as this lens. Probably compromise for larger image circle.

There are many, many, many other 300mm/12" Tessar formula lenses that are far better suited for 8x10 than the Nikkor M (multi-coated) or earlier Nikkor Q (single coated). The prime feature of the Nikkor M/Q is small size being in a Copal# 1 or similar# 1 shutter. Trade off being a full aperture of f9 and smaller image circle (325mm at f22, just barely covers 8x10)due to the# 1 size shutter. The small size and why so many 4x5 and some 5x7 view camera folks that require a small, compact and lightweight lens with good image quality in this focal length for their compact light weight field folder flock to the Nikkor M/Q.. 300mm/12" is one of the most common "normal" focal lengths for 8x10. The widest choices for 8x10 lenses are in the 300mm/12" to 360mm/14" focal length range. There is a very long list of Tessar formula lenses from Schneider, Fujinon, Kodak, Komura, Zeiss and many others in shutter and in barrel. Notable are the 300mm/12" f4.5 versions in a# 5 shutter (Ilex, Compound and others). Tessar formula lenses in this focal length range were made for decades since the invention of the Tessar formula by Paul Rudolf at Zeiss about 1902 and remained in production until view camera lenses were no longer in production. The Tessar formula lens remains one of the most versatile lens formulas to date and continues on in production in many variants to this day. Why, it has high to moderate contrast with excellent contrast rendition/separation, good performance at full aperture with near ideal optical performance about two f-stop from full aperture. The 6 air to glass surfaces reduces lens flare. Most notable about the Tessar is it's into out of focus rendition. Best of the Tessar formula view camera lenses made were Kodak Ektar and Commercial Ektar. These were made with Lanthanum low dispersion optical glass and meticulous design and production. Their only limitation, age and condition of the Ilex/Kodak shutters. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXmyeZWLgLx1kNU As for small size -vs- image circle the Goerz Dagor remains the other classic view camera lens. The 12" Dagor at f22 produces a whopping 500mm of image circle with excellent contrast coated or not coated due to the 4 air to glass surfaces. Dagor has low optical aberrations due to it's symmetrical design and it's optical performance holds from infinity focus to 1:1 life size due to it's symmetrical design.. or why it has remained a classic view camera lens and was produced for nearly 100 years. Best of the Dagors were near the end if its production in the late 70's to later 80's about the time when Goerz America changed ownership to Kollmorgen then Schneider. Earliest versions often have focus shift, last versions had about no focus shift. Schneider/Kern produced a 355mm f8 version that is multicoated and one of the highest contrast view camera lens made (cartoon colors). The Dagor formula lived on to become the extremely common Plasmat (air spaced variant) which was produced as Nikkor W, Fujinon W/NW/CM-W, Rodenstock Sironar series, Schneider Symmar.

I can assure you that pinhole "lenses" look very different - and are way smaller (and don't need a shutter, as exposure times on 8x10 start at a few seconds and can go into hours) … and have a huge image circle. Believe me, as that's my area of "expertise" … 😁 (Well, not on 8x10, at least for now, but on 4x5, where exposure times can go down to a second, but seldom do.) Since I'm thinking about using "real" lenses with my 4x5, your content is really valuable - I do learn a lot about anything large format watching your videos!

Hi John! What focal length do you prefer? That really should drive your decision. Also depends on what subject matter you like. 😀
