I second this, I'm begrudgingly using it because I have years of photos on it, and migrating all of that to CaptureOne or something else will be a pain. NX looks really good for a free app, but with the weird shortcomings here and there it may need some more work before going paid - if Nikon decides to do that.

I prefer to use Nikon software to render my NEF files before importing them into Photoshop because it matches the way my cameras (D4s & Z6 II) creates the jpeg. When shooting RAW + Jpeg, Adobe's RAW converter looks different compared to Nikon's jpegs. Nikon's RAW rendering software also recognizes the Active-D lighting setting I made in the camera.
@FlyEnri3 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting point about it! So you're saving mostly the JPGs and some of the pics you're editing on Photoshop, so you'd like matching colors right? There's one way of doing it in Photoshop and Lightroom. Mainly what you'll do is open up a NEF file there, and tweak the color calibration panel until you think it's matching or it's the way you like it. Then you can create a preset for that, and configure both softwares to apply it during import. This way everytime you open up a NEF file there, they will match the way you configured. Only thing you won't get is the active D-Lighting anyways, but well, you're gonna play with the RAW anyways.
@stevengeorges90463 жыл бұрын
@@FlyEnri Yes, the way I see it, Nikon did a lot of fine tuning to each of their cameras to achieve the look you get when your camera writes directly to jpeg or TIFF. I like the way my cameras look and I want my RAW files to start out that way. Adobe, and others, have to reverse engineer their RAW renderer for each camera and, I am assuming, because they have so many camera brands to work with they can't, or don't, take the time that Nikon puts into their renderer engine for each of their cameras. The fact that Adobe doesn't recognize that I shoot with Active-D Lighting is an example of this. BTW - If you are shooting RAW and not using Nikon's software to render your RAW fines, I recommend turning off Active-D Lighting as it affects the exposure.
@FlyEnri3 жыл бұрын
@@stevengeorges9046 This made me wonder why Adobe hasn't released some sort of Presets, like they have for lens correction, but on the Camera Calibration panel, in which you simply select the camera and the calibration is tuned to match the JPGs colors. But yeah, a software that takes it all is practical but not fine tuned like when you're more specific. This is the core of the whole Android - iOS discussions for example...

I wish I could use this Nikon Studio software. I like everything about it, especially now that I have the Nikon Z9. Unfortunately the software is champ in crashing all the time on my Mac OS Monterey. I can’t accomplish anything using it. I am forced to pay and use Capture one 23 Pro which is the only one capable of reading Z9’s NEF files. Can’t seem to understand why Nikon Studio crashes all the time…
@FlyEnri Жыл бұрын
Hi Ele! I didn't know there were problems between the Z9 and some editing softwares, i saw now that also on lightroom it doesn't seem to work very well... I didn't dig deep, but have you tried other ones like On1 ?
@ele4853 Жыл бұрын
@@FlyEnri Hello! I have solved the problem. Yes, Adobe does not have plug in for Z9 NEF files yet. Capture One Pro 23 does it. However why would one purchase that software just o organize files? it does not do sharpening or de-noise... I am running away from "subscriptions" these guys are getting worst by the day with pay subscriptions. DxO Photolab 6 does what lighroom does and more because they have the best de-noise and sharpening engine out there. However they too do not read NEF (RAW HE*) from Nikon Z9. The price is even worst and they have a lot of automated tools and buttons to do the job for you. Very seductive. From all my struggle I kept isolating the problems I was having with my Nikon NX Studio and boy it paid off! The problem has nothing to do with software. CFexpress B Card READER! Both Sony MRW-G1 CFexpress Type B/XQD Memory Card Reader and ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B & UHS-II SDXC Dual-Slot USB 3.2 Gen 2 Card Reader are not compatible with Mac OS very well. I had a hard time to make my Mac OS Monterey recognize both card readers! Well then when I click on the card readers mentioned above to “see or import the photos in it” BUM either Nikon DX Studio or picture control crash right of the bat. When I choose to “see” any NEF files from my other RAID 1 hardrives (I downloaded the NEF files directly from the card readers directly to my RAID 1 external drives) both Nikon NX Studio or Picture Control do not crash! Guess what I accidentally found that out because the Sony failed to work after 2 weeks using it and I purchase just in case the SanDisk Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B Card Reader. Then I thought, mmm what if I test my new Card reader?.... Guess what? No more crashes! Both Nikon NX Studio and Picture control “sees” any NEF or JPG right on when I click on the files from the Sandisk card reader! So yes, the advantage of having Nikon NX Studio are many. First it’s FREE! Second, Nikon is the only company that knows everything about Z9 NEF files! What you can see when using Nikon NX Studio is amazing! No other software today does what it does. I could right a book about this! LOL Done with Lightroom, DxO, Capture One and the likes. I am already using Topaz software. Well not perfect compared to DxO Photolab 6 but hey pretty close and the price is WAY better. Here we go. Yes, card readers! Forget Pro Grade, Sony and the other ones. THE CHAMP? SanDisk Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B Card Reader! AND IT’S HALF THE PRICE FROM THE OTHERS! I already purchased another one for BACK UP! LOL you never know!

Very impressed you made this video. I use three raw editors Nikon's NX-i, Luminar 4.30, and DXO 4.11 of the three I prefer NX-i it lets me work with the image I took keep a more "realistic look" (just my expression). Luminar is also useful, but it does maintain image integrity as well as NX-i the same for DXO. None of them work with my work flow. I have to keep reminding what directory I am using for the edits. I don't like Adobe because of it's subscription business model. Since I convert raw edit to TIFF I use Corel Graphics Suite for further editing, but they were recently acquired by an investment fund and switched to a subscription model, so I am using an older version of that app for TIFF edits and refuse their upgrades. Anyway NX-i works best for me since I come from the software development world I can usually figure work arounds for the parts that annoy me. I know Luminar and DXO (Adobe too) are well regarded, I'm just not that impressed with them,but useful enough for raw images I shoot with my other cameras (mostly shoot with Nikon d810 and d850), but often a real pain. To say again, NX-i works well and Nikon (and the other two) has been very good with up grades. I see no advantage with the subscription model.
@FlyEnri3 жыл бұрын
Hi dear, thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! DXO is on my list to give it a try, and I'll make a comparison video about the main features on all of them! So interesting the editing kit you've been using, with Nx-i and Corel! I know they can be used, but I had never considered a possibility, always thought they would suit better for graphics and illustrations only. Regarding subscriptions, at the same time I'm not a huge fan, it's been good for me with Adobe. Since I use 5 of their softwares, having the subscription allows me to receive constant updates as soon as they come out, and the integration between them is awesome. Being able to be inside Lightroom and take a picture to Photoshop and back without wasting time or quality is great. And for video editing the same, editing inside Premiere and being able to go inside After Effects and back withtout any hassle. But because of you guys I'm starting to know many options that can be interesting for other workflows, and I'll be testing all of it :D

@@FlyEnri Yes! The funny thing is the U-point system has been around for a very long time actually. As far as I know it was originally developed by a German guy (I forgot his name unfortunately) that also is the original creator of the amazing NIK plugin suite that’s been so highly appreciated by the photography community for a very long time. When DXO acquired the NIK plug-in suite a few years back they quickly lifted over the U-point technology and incorporated into its flagship DXO PhotoLab application. Which means it is possible to use U-points on the raw level of development in that program. I’m not sure how the U-point technology managed to be part of this new Nikon application but I know that the original NIK plugin developer had a close relationship with Nikon and their software R&D department way back in time. Maybe it was more of a joint venture between the two that led to this technology?

I’m exclusively a Nikon shooter and other raw film formats don’t concern me. This is an excellent alternative to LR and you failed to mention that this program utilizes all of Nikon’s Picture Controls, as well as any Picture Controls you create. I have a Canon 5D Mk3 Picture Control and this software will recognize it and apply it to my NEF file. Also different Picture Controls for various film stock looks. LR can’t do this.

Hi John! To have similar thing on Lightroom you need to create the presets like the picture controls you like and you can apply it even on import and just by scrolling over the presets you can see their effect on the RAW image. Sincerely, I don't see how useful Picture Controls can be, but maybe it's because my workflow is way too different, I'd love to hear from you what's the great benefit. Thanks for watching!

Thank you reviewing Nikon NX Studio. Not bad overall, but not as many features as Lightroom. However there are some unique features to Nikon cameras like D Lighting. For a free software, good for some consumers. I use ACDSee Professional Studio as an alternative to Lightroom, as for about $100. one time cost, it is loaded with many or most of the editing features of Lightroom including brushes and gradients etc. with a similar slider interface, and also some Photoshop editing features like Layers. This is a very robust software after 10 versions and comes in Mac and PC. There is a one month trial version, perhaps this is a good one to review on your you tube channel. Or have you already tried it? It does everything Lightroom can for most part in editing features, without the subscription if you buy full license.

@FlyEnri3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy! Welcome to the channel! Yeah, it works on JPG and TIFF files also, but what I say at 1:14 is that it "only accepts RAW files from Nikon cameras", meaning the NEF files. Surely you can edit JPGs but they are automatically developed versions of your images in camera, so you're processing a processed image. Especially tweaking colors and recovering highlights can be a pain if you don't have a RAW image...

Hi Russo, thanks a lot!! Regarding CPU and Memory you're above their minimum requirements, but I noticed it can be quite heavy on the graphics card, which is good and bad. The card is meant for that, doing specific graphics tasks, and improving overall performance. Many softwares don't take advantage of it, and just lag behind. But on the other hand, if you don't have a good one, softwares that use either lag terribly or don't run at all...

Well if you shoot with Nikon you have everything you need to edit the basics. Edit the basics and if you have a portrait you can finish the job with photoshop........so I don't think you will miss a thing if you just have to do the basics, I say this because I edited all my (NEF) soccer photos with Capture NX 2 until I had to stop using NX 2 because it was discontinued. This software looks very good but I started editing my photos with Capture One 21 for Nikon so I don't think I will use this software as my first choice. My pleasure, thanks a lot! Regarding exporting for different medias, I use a lot on Lightroom a feature called Snapshot, which I believe on Capture One the analog would be the variants. It's like creating a copy (but virtual) of the original raw file, that you can edit differently. Be it a different crop, or edit, whatever. In Lightroom it's amazing, I create a Snapshot in the beggining, then after editing, then one with the 4x5 crop for Instagram or 9x16 for stories, and it's all within the same file.

Yes, Capture One is an amazing piece of software. I have a $10 subscription for their Nikon version (which includes all tools but only accept NEF files as the only restriction). Apart from the superior ways it renders raw files what I also really like is the dedicated Luma Range and layer system that is so unique to Capture One. I think those two functions are missing in the free version of Capture One, no?

Good video! I just tried out the software and compared it to Lightroom classic. One thing I really noticed was even photos shot at base iso (100 for my d610), had noticeable noise in Lightroom compared to almost none in NX Studio. I made sure that no processing was done during import to lightroom and no processing was done to the same images in NX Studio. NX Studio just seemed to display slightly smoother, cleaner files. Exporting to .tif from NX Studio and importing into Lightroom allowed me to compare more closely, and I was left a little disappointed with Lightroom in that respect. Don't get me wrong I love Lightroom, and use it all the time, I can see that perhaps the rendering of the Raw files could be a bit better.

Hi George!! This was a great test! I didn't notice this difference! I'm gonna try it now and i'll tell you in the next comments! It might be maybe the rendering of Nikon files specifically inside Lightroom... ? Did you notice if when exporting the difference was still there?

@stevengeorges90463 жыл бұрын
@FlyEnri Looking forward to it. Photo Mechanic is very popular among photojournalist. If you ever walk into a photo press room at a sports or other news event, you will see just about everyone using it. Photo Mechanic is not a pixel editor, it is what I call a folder looker. You drag-n-drop a folder onto PM's icon (that's one way) and it will show you every photo in that folder (but not folder inside a folder) There are many tools for organizing, rating, captioning, batch processing, and even transmitting. There is nothing faster you can use to quickly go through your shoot, pair down to the best photos, caption, send to Photoshop (for example) and then send the photos all on deadline. There is no catalog, what info you write to the photo is written to the photo, or what is called a sidecar. That way other software, such as Photoshop or Lightroom, can read the work you did in Photo Mechanic. The search capabilities are very good and on a Mac, I can perform a search on my computer, (and any attached hard drive) search through the captions of a couple of hundred thousand photos and find the ones I'm looking for nearly instantaneously. Keep in mind my photos have captions and the Mac version takes advantage of AppleSearch. One look at the preferences will show you how much work they have put into fine tuning their software to the needs of the working professional on deadline. I am assuming that it is not as popular among the non-professional. (I never liked the term amateur)

@@stevengeorges9046 That's really interesting! I use windows and got some plugins to simulate things I like from Macs, like for example AirDrop, the indexing of files, quickview, etc. I'll be sure to do a speed test with PM! In my case, speed is not that necessary, I need more the catalog organization, but for a sports shooter I can imagine how much better it is. Recently Sony created a system with their A1 camera, to be connected to their Xperia phone and send stuff almost immediately over 5G, have you seen it? Also another thing I'd love to give a try :)

If you have multiple camera brands, then you'll need LIghtroom or CaptureOne or some other "third party" application. NX Studio is fine if you jut want to do basic stuff and only use Nikon cameras. I will say that LIghtroom (Classic) is outdated and needs to be replaced, but not because of NX Studio. LR Classic is just an old program that's really due for a re-write from the ground up.
@FlyEnri3 жыл бұрын
Hi Heelix! Yeah, definitely for multiple camera brands you'll need something else. It's a shame they won't get even DNG files, otherwise if someone has a Nikon and a drone for example, you could transform using some DNG converter app, but nope... LR Classic could totally use a bit of a rewrite, but at least we've seen some significant updates the last few months of things we've been waiting for a long time, like the new color grading panel and the hue adjustment in the primary panel. I would love a better management of catalogs, that still bugs me too much...
