You are genuine and direct, not selling anything here. All editing videos we watch on Adobe lightroom, photoshop and other was so convincing that I went spending money. Having recently installed and using the NX studio I cannot agree more with you, this is not only a very good software, it's the single best photo editing software for Nikon cameras, no other software can provide excellent result for Nikon camera as Nikon's own photo editor; Nikon knows the algorithm of their color science better than anyone else. I have now compared few of the side by side images done in this software and the other popular ones and the results from Nikon NX Studio is much cleaner and better than others, period.

Thanks, Charles. I am that typical "weekend photographer" you mentioned. I want my work to be better and I have come to realize that I'm taking decent shots but have zero experience with post-production. Last night, I discovered NX Studio and was very excited to find out that it was free! I don't like the idea of paying $120-$240 per year for something when I can do most of what I need for free. This was the perfect video to show that you can indeed do wonders with software. I wonder how many of us would have looked at the original RAW photo and said "That didn't turn out. Trash it!" You showed so much in less than half an hour! VERY helpful.

It makes perfect sense Nikon is giving it free to Nikon users. If it read dng files, anyone with any other brand of camera could use if free. Thank you Nikon! I have always kept my original files and made dng copies.
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Derrick, even though I convert my NEF files to DNG, they still are recognised as a Nikon RAW file. Also since this program can also read JPG's and TIF files, this idea doesn't stack up. Has I can edit TIF files that were saved from NEF files and DNG files.

I've just discovered the new versions of NX Studio and Transfer. For small projects it might be better in some cases compared to Capture One Pro which I use currently, but the overall performance seems to be very slow. There also has been a back step with Transfer in the 'finished' pop up and then closing down without allowing another card or camera to be imported.
@CharlesNPhotography2 жыл бұрын
I don't use Nikon Transfer, so can't comment on that. But I have sent messages to Nikon about the slowness of NX Studio without any replies. But most people are still happy with it as it's a free program that does a fairly good job at editing raw Nikon files

Thank you Charles for this review. I am a weekend hobbyist and I am battling with Adobe making the green of my garden photos look all weird, no matter how much I adjusted, I am not happy with how Adobe was interpreting the green colours of my garden photos. Maybe it is me doing something wrong, but the point is I was not satisfied with the results of the colours. I watched your review, tried out NX Studio, and to my great pleasure, it has interpreted the greens to look correct/pleasing to me. I am far more pleased with the results from NX Studio, especially the final results of the colour interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to do this review, your effort made a change in my hobby!

Hi Charles. I have a question regarding the Nikon NX Studio please. My workflow is pretty simple. I go through my shots for the day (Just in Windows photo viewer) and I delete the gumpf, I only keep the best and most relevant photos. Keep in mind, these photos would typically be of an afternoon at the park of my kids playing, or a family lunch, etc, just memories photos. In Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw (ACR), I then select and open all the RAW files, for example the 50 photos I shot. I can then select all the Photos, and then I select the AUTO button on the right to apply a starting point of the edit. I then select each photo and maybe tweak the white balance, exposure, highlights, Shadows, sharpening and noise - just quickly, and typically I am happy with auto and I just move on to the next photo. If there is one photo that I like and was shot really badly (Over/Under exposed for example), I will spend a few minutes more tweaking that photo using pretty much all the options until it looks good. Thats it, I then select all and export to jpg, save to my cloud storage, and maybe whatsapp and Facebook share a few of them. So maybe 10 - 20 minutes I will spend overall. I really like how Nikon NX Studio presents the colours of the photos. The problem I find with Nikon NX Studio, is that I open all the 50 photos, but I have to manually edit the settings for each individual photo, I can't find an "Auto" option to emulate my ACR workflow? Is there a way to quickly edit though a bunch of photos with an "Auto" option, so that The NX Studio workflow can be sped up? Thank You Chris
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a very simple way of doing this and thanks for mentioning it to me as I will add this to my next tutorial on using NX Studio. So you select the first image in your folder > then go to Edit > Select All > all your images are now selected. To un-select all the images, just click on any of your images and you can work on that one image. To un-select just a few images in your collection Hold the Ctrl key down and use the left mouse button to un-select the images you don't want to continue to edit. Hope this helps you. Please leave a follow-p comment if I've helped you out, as this really helps me out. Thank you

Thank you for making this video. I have been using LR for years, but refused to pay a subscription for LR for something I may not even use for a month or more at a time. Since all my cameras are old, this was not an issue until I bought my Z50 and LR6 could not read the NEF files from this model. My work-around is to use the free Adobe DNG Convertor to convert the NEF to DNG so that LR6 can then import. I suppose you can also use this tool to convert your NEF to DNG to deliver to your clients. The main issue with the DNG converter is that it only uses the Adobe Standard profile, and does not support camera profiles unlike LR. I found the results opening them in LR to be pretty disappointing compared to the JPG version from camera. I then opened the NEFs in NX Studio and was blown away with the NEFs apprearing just like my JPGs except better. Now I am determined to move to NX Studio especially for my Z50 photos. May do so in future for the older cameras as well. Once again, thanks for the tutorial.

Yes It is a fairly good editing program for those who don't do to much editing to their photos. 😉

Thank you, Charles, for explaining it so well. I am rather a month-end or six-monthly photographer, uses Nikon Z7 - so this free program suits me well.

Nikon Capture NX2 Preceded Lightroom and NX Studio, it was not free. It was wonderful and if you mastered it you could do anything with it, I never used anything else. I am delighted to see this is similar,. The great thing about Capture NX2 was the control points. You could literally recreate the photo like a great canvas only as small as a few pixels a a time. You never harm the NEF All edits you save as a version.

This is very much like the original free nikon software Nikon NX in the ease of use and which I have sorely missed since they ditched it and its compatibility with newer cameras such as my D500. I will be downloading this tonight 😊. One question though, there used to be an option in the export bit which was a choice of Facebook or Internet so you didnt have to resize the image manually for Facebook upload, is there still and easy option like that in the export image section 🤔.
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, unfortunately you have to manually set the size of the image when you export it

Great intro to NX Studio. I’ll be using NX Studio in the future, since I don’t like the subscription based licensing of Lightroom. Thank you Charles.
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I I wasn't that involved/committed to photography I would be using NX Studio, and made in the future when I stop doing this full-time, I most likely will go to NX Studio

Great tutorial Charles. I've been debating moving from Lightroom to NX Studio for a while for my Z9 images. I just feel LR does not get the most out of the Nikon RAW files, they always look just a little bit over processed in LR, not as 'smooth' as the files in Studio.
@CharlesNPhotography5 ай бұрын
You can use NX Studio for editing your Z9 images, but understand that due to the files size of the images that editing your photos will be more time consuming than doing it in Lightroom. A mate of mine has the Z9 and he doesn't have any problems editing his images in LR.

Thanks Charles. You nailed it for a beginner. I extensively use NX studio or capture nxd as it used to be called, for my D850. Brings out colours so well. Actually I would recommend NX studio for all Nikon users. One may use it in combination with Aurora HDR to plug in the missing features of layers.
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree, NX Studio is quite good, but it's not as feature packed as Lightroom Classic, but for the day-to-day photographer it's quite good. I'm uploading another NX Studio video tonight and this one is on editing a Milky Way image.

What is the difference of the 3 noise reduction methods?
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I haven't found much difference between them personally
@vfxforge3 жыл бұрын
so in your opinion its better to turn EVERYTHING off when shooting in manual & raw and do everything afterwards? does the camera offer no added benefit when post processing photos in camera?
@CharlesNPhotography3 жыл бұрын
There are a few things that should be done in-camera, for example if you're doing a long exposure, then long-exposure noise reduction should be turned on in-camera. I strongly recommend using the "Nikon Picture Controls: What Are They & Why Use Them" kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWi0q6ptgZiDmKM. Modern cameras are designed to help make your work easer, and that goes for editing them as well. So I setup my camera to help me do this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5jClZqwZpd9aKc

Thanks Charles. This is an excellent series. I have just started trying NX out as an alternative to Lightroom & Photoshop. I was wondering if you knew of a way to add a watermark to a photo as you are exporting it or does that need to be done externally. Thanks again. I enjoy all of your videos.
@CharlesNPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there's no way to add a watermark in NX Studio
