Hi. Great review. I'm thinking of the Z6ii and the F1.8 primes, great mix of size and performance. However I moved to Fuji when I got fed up on my Nikon D7100 of having to AF finetune lenses to get sharp prime focus, then compromising on setting for different distances etc. Shouldn't be needed on mirrorless from what I understand but I see it's on the Z6ii??!! I don't want to have to start tuning lenses again! Do you know why it's there and have you needed to use? Thanks.

I need your advise. I've currently got a Z6 with ftz, 24-70 f4, 35,50,85mm native lenses and a 50mm 1.8g lens.. i was considering upgrading.. 1 do you think its 100% worth it and 2 i dont actually use my 24-70 that much.. mostly due to the f stop and if i do use it its only because i might need a slightly wider shot at 24mm.. i was thinking if i sold the z6 with the 24-70, 50mm 1.8 and ftz i might regret it?

Thank you Ricci for your videos on the Nikon, I am a Canon / Sony shooter. I just bought a Z6ii when a few finally came into my local camera shop. I love this camera, it's really fun to shoot with; granted first 4-5 hours i had to reprogram myself to twist things the correct way lol. The colors and sharpness are amazing. Why did i get a Z6ii when I already use the R5, R6 & A9? My good friends only use Nikon and was dying to used some of their glass (amazing glass) and i really wanted to understand the Nikon ecosystem. Again, the color coming out of the Z6ii is superb and I have absolutely no complaints about the focus system; it just works differently, i understand now.

Great to see you posting again! I picked up a Z6II, been trying it out on dog sports(agility) - animal eye AF works on the slower dogs. For Border Collies and other wacko dogs I find dynamic area AF is the right tool. It is giving my D500 a run for its' money.

Very useful video! I think for enthusiasts who need an all-rounder mirrorless, the move from a Z 6 to a Z 6II might actually make sense, especially for those who shoot wildlife and sports. I'm not sure I'll ever need more than 24 MP to be honest. I think the most useful thing about Ricci's videos is that he really puts the AF system through the paces and understands each camera's strengths and weaknesses - and he tells us! Specs matter a lot less than the actual experiences of an actual photographer.
@richpaul81324 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I used to shoot a D2X and for years, I saw no reason to change. I'm not a pro shooter, though I am experienced and have been shooting Nikon's since the mid-80's. However, I finally decided that I would upgrade and about 2 years ago, I bought a D4S. This camera was "all that" for me! I actually had to force myself to venture into ISO speeds higher than 600 or 800. In film, 800 ISO was just about 'crazy' and the noise in low-light was all too apparent. I still argue with myself when I go into higher ISOs but I have to admit that the D4S processed the shots I took with a 3000 or 4000 ISO so well, that I just couldn't find a justifiable argument not to use those higher speeds when I needed them. I'm 65 and the equipment isn't getting any lighter but my ability to carry it around is getting thinner. Enter the Z7II: I've NEVER considered a mirror less camera because I can show you serious distortions in frame after frame that came from my brother's Apple-brand cellphone pictures and P&S cameras. Later, he bought a mid-level mirror-less camera and again, the distortions were far too frequent for my taste. My brother isn't an experienced photographer and didn't notice these distortions until I pointed them out. It seemed that mirror-less cameras had a serious problem with red & black plaid shirts when the apertures were small, (such as used in a group family shot at the dinner table). His son was wearing a red & black plaid shirt in some of his pictures. At apertures around F9, F10, F11 and higher, all the images distorted the alignment of the red and black stripes on the shirt. The shirt was primarily red and the black stripes ran vertically and were about 2 inches wide. Wherever there was a slight buckle or crease in the shirt material, (when he was sitting or relaxed in a chair), the image he got would show a strange interruption, and even a discontinuation, of the black stripe as it followed the contour of the curve in the material. It was a Thanksgiving gathering and I was shooting the D4S and in several cases, took pictures of the same group pics and from the same angle as he did. Of course, the D4S didn't distort the plaid shirt. Now, the D4S's viewfinder probably cost more than the entire lens in my brother's cellphone, but it wasn't the cheap lens in his phone that was causing those anomalies in his pictures. That was easily proven by the images he took where the plaid shirt was not in the picture. Those images were fine, or as fine as any Cellphone would expect. In addition, the P&S mirror-less he had would create a different set of strange anomalies. When he was taking a picture of something moving by him at speed, (like his daughter on her bike), and again, with small apertures of around F9-F11+, the background would have these strange misalignment in many of the vertical objects, (like street-sign poles, or telephone poles). They appeared to break along the length, someplace around half way down. I'm considering the Z7II not only because it's lighter than the D4S, but because it's a high-quality mirror-less camera that can take my F-mount lenses, (with the Z/F adapter). However, I'm worried about that mirror-less distortion characteristic that I saw in my brother's cellphone and Point-&-Shoot images. BTW; his cameras are not the only mirror-less cameras that produce those anomalies. As a sideline, I do image restoration, post-clean-up, and corrections, as well as large format printing. Many of the images I get are from people who took what turned out to be an important image, (to them), with their cellphone only to find that it didn't look nearly as good in a large-screen and/or print size as it did in there little viewing screens. (I personally don't own a cellphone and hope to avoid them as long as I can, lol). Those are the most common images that I receive. Often the image is of some relative who is no longer alive and they only had that picture, (which they thought was fine until they had it enlarged in a Walmart). I won't go into detail, but I use an number of techniques and offer alternative options that can save an otherwise terrible shot. To get back on my point, the images where I see these strange anomalies similar to my brother's pictures, come from mirror-less cameras and some from surprisingly celebrated, high-end, (if not expensive), point & Shoots. That's why I'm concerned about spending the money for a mirror-less camera, especially one that exceeds $2K. Have you seen any 'inexplicable distortions' in your images when viewing them on a large monitor? Have you tried any moire-testing, like shooting at a row of picket fences from an extreme angle, or a screen door perhaps? I noticed the shots you took mostly hung on larger apertures, (5.6 and even some 2.8's). The distortions may become evident if you shoot at some small apertures, like F10 or 11, or even higher. In fact, I personally would like to see some images of screen doors, or fast moving subjects like the bicycle images I mentioned. All with apertures over F9. Maybe you can find a chance to stick some of those results within your review of the Z7II). I see that you have an extended Grip on your Z6II, which I assume is also for battery. I'm used to the Nikon Pro-Body styles and would likely buy a grip like that for the Z7II if it didn't add too much more weight. The point of my considering the Z7II is to reduce some of my equipment weight but as heavy as the D4S is, it's still worth carrying... At least for now. ;) Rich

I agree 100% with your thoughts on the Z6II's target audience. This was the perfect camera for me to move into full frame from APS-C. I can't wait to be freed from back-order purgatory so I can get out and use it.

Excellent review. The other point about going with the Z6ii is the future proofing of it. Whilst I am sure Nikon will continue to support the Z6 the extra processing power of the Z6ii will likely lead to more meaningful firmware updates in the future that will further improve on its abilities. I have a Z6ii and it is definitely snapper with focusing etc.

Good review. I have found for shooting sports (football) in low light the Z6ii acquires focus quicker and not so many lost shots with missed focus in bursts and better for erratic moving subjects. The point you make about re-learning trying some of the features again is very valid. I got into certain ways of shooting on Z6 that I now need to unlearn and re-try some of the other focus modes rather than dynamic and small wide that were my norm for sport. There were also a few ‘odd’ scenarios that I used to get on the 6 - such as the camera freezing up, which I have t encountered on the 6ii.

As always the best real world reviews of the Z system. I still am surprised your excellent content has not caused more than 21k subs. I do not need the Z6 2, the new enhancements are very nice but I really have served very well by my beloved Z6. It is so rare that better AF is needed, since I am not a sports shooter but concentrate on studio, event, portraiture and architecture and even with a commercial session of hundreds of shots, focusing is just not a problem. If money was no object I would buy one but all the new lenses first. What I am planning however is to move to all mirrorless by selling all my F glass except for maybe 1 to use with my D800 as backup and sell the D850. The 18 lenses and camera might be enough for the Z7 2 plus 70-200 2.8 S and teleconverter and 50 1.2. With so little income now (like...none for a year in my primary business of two incoming tour operator companies for a full year so far due to the pandemic). If I had the normal seasonal income I would just keep everything and add the Z7 2 and lenses. Iwill keep the D800 because for my uses it is still an excellent image machine, and its resale value is so low. that is is worth more to me sitting on the shelf than what they are going for.

Another terrific review. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's good to hear about your real world experience - especially the AF performance and improvements. Michelle Valberg has done some testing with the Z6ii Animal Eye AF for subjects other than cats and dogs. Some subjects that had a similar eye and color worked out quite well. The key is a well defined eye - and if possible high contrast between the eye, pupil, and surrounding feathers or fur. Of course, the animal also needs to be close enough to meaningfully be large in the frame. With the Z6, I found dog fur color and patterns made a big difference. Most of the time Animal Eye AF with German Shepherds was near 100%, but with the brindle coat of a Malinois I had 100% failure.

I still love my Z6, its the favorite of all the SLRs and DSLRs I've shot with. But one of the frustrations of being a first adopter is that you miss out on subsequent improvements. The 2 improvements on the Z6ii that I really like is 1) the ability to do eye or face detect within a focus box and 2) the absence of banding in the darkest parts of the image. But other than that I don't feel as though I'm missing out on much especially with the current price difference between the 2 models. Thankfully the firmware updates to the autofocus fixed enough of the outstanding issues to make the original Z6 a fairly capable camera for my needs.

Thanks Ricci, I enjoyed this video. I took delivery of the 7ii on Saturday (courtesy of Grays of Westminster) and am delighted with the camera. I also have a Z6. I do have a couple of questions / feedback. Firstly, the Z6 came with a highly detailed manual which goes into almost everything, however, the manual that came in the 7ii box is slightly less thick and covers 4 different language variants so, in effect, the manual is not much more than a "Get you started" guide. I looked on the Nikon Download site but the manual shown there doesn't seem to be much better. Have Nikon stopped producing the "full" manual? The second point is - I see various reference on the web to 14bit RAW, 12bit RAW, 10bit RAW and the benefits of using different versions, however, in the camera's menu I cannot see anything that allows you to select the level of RAW you might want to use or any reference as to how many bits RAW the camera is using. I have sleeted RAW in the "Image Quality" part of the menu (same on both cameras). I have also tried out the setting with RAW + JPEG fine but not seen any sub-menu selection to choose different levels of RAW. Please can you explain this. Many thanks.
@RicciTalks4 жыл бұрын
I got two manuals in my Z7ii box to cover different languages the English takes up 57 pages is that the case with your Z7ii ? To edit raw bit depth you need to go to NEF raw recording in the menu it’s a few steps below the image quality setting there you can choose 14bit or 12bit raw
@SwanSycorax4 жыл бұрын
@@RicciTalks Thanks. I also got two manuals - one includes the English section plus three other languages, the other is just 4 foreign languages. This compares with the original Z6 manual that was thicker then either of the 6ii/7ii manuals and all English! Thanks for the advice on the NEF RAW recording. I hadn't looked at that before. As a matter of interest, what setting do you use / prefer in this regard?

my heartfelt thanks for the video! anyway I am curious about the Z6ii/Z7ii animal eye AF performance, and was hoping if you could drop some insight if possible! I use a Z6 and a Z7 now for stills, and when I photograph cats with them, if the cats are walking towards the camera (not running, but at a slightly brisk pace), even though the animal eye AF picks up the eyes and the yellow boxes are around them, the focus does not seem to be able to catch up and I end up with quite a number of back-focused shots (more so with the Z7 than Z6). I resort to using dynamic AF or single point AF now for such situations, which give me a much higher keeper rate at the cost of composition since I have to keep the cats' eyes within the focus point. how do you find the responsiveness and accuracy of animal eye AF of the mark ii bodies, especially for moving cats and dogs? (sorry for the long comment!)

My take after about 5,000 shots on my Z cameras... they're great cameras and I think NIkon has done a great job with them. The only place they seem to maybe fall short in comparison to the competition is AF. But if you're not photographing sports or wildlife, the Z cameras are great cameras. I think Nikon did a very good job considering the Z6/Z7 was their first attempt at a FF mirrorless camera (And minus the small issue some people had with IBIS on the first gen, I think they did things quite well and got a lot of things right on the first try). As with all things, there is always room to improve, but so far, I'm impressed with what Nikon has done in just a little over 2 years. And I kind of find it funny when people are l ike "WEll, Sony has this lens, and that lens, or this and that accessory..." yeah well, Sony has been doing mirrorless since about 2011-2012, so they have about a 6 year head start on Nikon and Canon (although Canon has had the EOS M series for the past 5-6 years now so they already had their foot in the door with an APS-C ML system). It is a bit sad that Nikon didn't continue with mirrorless after the Nikon 1 series, because I would think they would be a bit ahead of where they are now (not that they are in a bad place, but they could have been perhaps one or two generations farther down the road). But regardless, Nikon has done a good job so far. Now they just need to release a body that rivals the pro DSLRs, the a9 series and the R5 series.

I have a 6II on order, but am conflicted between it and the 7II. I mostly shoot Birds (including BIF and small birds) and other wildlife. I wanted something with low light capabilities (high ISO + High shutter speed), but since I also shoot small birds, thought that the Z-7II's higher megapixel would lend itself to better cropping abilities. Since you shoot with both I would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your time (and your reviews).

The z6ii/z6 have have fewer megapixels than the z7ii/z7 and both are full frame, which means the pixels have to be bigger to cover the same area of the sensor. Bigger pixels are better at absorbing light (like a lower aperture) so lower megapixels essentially means better low light performance when comparing two basically identical cameras (sensor being the primary difference). Z7ii/z7 still performs incredibly well in low light though don't be fooled - but the z6ii/z6 have the slight edge.

I have a major issue... I have read countless reviews contradicting d Z6II. I own a D7200. I shoot perched birds and BIF and general landscape, street and operational photography. I have actually had great success with this camera because of its extra crop factor extending my G1 Tamron reach, giving me a great array of shots. Sure AF could be better. I have been been brain wrecked as to the D850 or the Z6II. I read that the AF is vastly improved on the Z6II essentially "nullifying" the D850 but seeing some wildlife in the field reports still critisizing the Z6II. Other issue is the G1 will not work on the Z6II I believe. Any advice would be grateful.

Question on these mirrorless ZII cameras, when you are shooting a higher frame rates what does the EVF and the rear screen if so using, do for each exposure? Does it pause momentarily and show you the shot or can you set it to only see the subject so it doesn't interrupt the shooting experience of a fast moving animal like your birds? I would thing it pausing/displaying would be maddening to try to follow something.

Hi Ricci, I am a hobbyist photographer and currently own the D7200 and Z50. I really like to move to all mirrorless camera's. So thinking of replacing my D7200 with the Z6 or Z6II (can't really justify the cost of the Z7 or Z7II). Which one would you recommend and which lens would you recommend. I mainly shoot when on vacation, grandkids and some wildlife. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the review Ricci. I use my 2 Z6’s predominantly for video & no one (that I can find) has reviewed the appalling hdmi lag from the Z6. It’s 9 fps@30p, 7 fps@25p & 6 fps@25p. The RAW upgrade has essentially reduced that to 0-1 frame but raw doesn’t support higher frame rates so it’s not always an option. Can you please shoot a test on the Z6ii with an external recorder & let us know if the additional processor has reduced the hdmi latency? There’s loads of Nikon Z video shooters that would love to know. Thanks.

Hi Ricci, great video. a couple of questions: have the firmware updates improved the animal eye tracking, can it handle birds yet? have you used the f mount 200-500 f5.6 on it if so how does the AF perform? Finally what frame rate can it do in uncompressed RAW?

I have been studying the reviews on the Nikon Z system (the honest ones, I trust your reviews for accuracy and honesty). I am getting down to the nuts and bolts of transitioning to the Z system. I do portrait and landscape/art photography. How does the in body stabilization interact with being on a tripod (on my F mount lenses the images turn to mush if I forget to turn off in lens stabilization)? How do the Z cameras work with the Nikon Creative Lighting System? I need the adapter, but my D500 and D850 can then control all my SB-5000 flashes in camera from the back menus. Thanks in advance, keep up the great work, I am definitely a follower of your reviews.

Thank you this is fantastic information. I'm planning on getting a Z6ii in the future. One thing I've been wondering though is how well the Z6ii would be shooting stills at a night time football game under stadium lights with a 120-300mm f2.8 or the 180-400 f4? What would be your thoughts on this?

I have both the Z6 and D850 and shoot the Z6 95% of the time, it is such a joy hold and use for hours without fatigue but retains more than needed resolution. The biggest advantage however is the S lenses. The best F mount lenses I have, are not as good as even the more modest 1.8 S primes

Ricci did a review of 3 great options for wildlife and the 200-500 being the lowest cost option did surprisingly well, and actually might be a better choice than the excellent 70-200 2.8 S with the new 1.4x TC and 2.0TC. That surprised me.

Hi Ricci, thanks for all the effort you put into your no nonsense videos, much appreciated. If I can demonstrate my ineptitude in public can I ask how to set up my Z6ii to do single point AF. I have it working fine on my original Z6 but absolutely nothing that I try in the menu will get it to work on the Z6ii (latest firmware or not). I am at the point, for the first time since 1967, seriously wanting to chuck the thing in the bin. All I get no matter how I set the camera up, in whichever mode you choose, is a load of red rectangles dancing all over the screen none of which go green if and when focus is achieved. Have I got a 'return' on my hands or am I really so dense I just don't understand the instructions properly. Any pointers would be gratefully recieved. Bw Keith
@RicciTalks3 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith it sounds like you are unable to change the af area mode The load of red rectangles is what happens in Af area mode : AUTO They do not go green in AF-C they stay red all the time To get the camera to single point 1. Press and hold fn2 role the front dial this will change the area mode untill you see the single point option 2. Press the i button in the i menu choose af area mode often top line far right select single point from the options 3. Press menu button go to photo shooting menu In that menu find af area mode press ok and choose single point from the options Your camera isn’t broken it’s just in auto area af I’m assuming that you shoot in A S OR M ?
