Agreed, half of these changes or more are what have been requested, by Z6/7 users. 900s shutter, Eye AF in different modes, reduced display info. Seems like Z6/7 owners were actually beta testers. Now they’ve repackaged it for the grip/card slot moaners and used the feedback from the beta testers for UI improvements which they could’ve added to the original bodies. Instead chose to save them as “features” and sell it again
@victorpopukh54514 жыл бұрын
100% true but the are so ignorant and they won’t do it because there won’t be enough differentiation between last and new models they have to charge premium for it. Those feature will appear in z6 and z7 in a year or maybe even later after the launch of the mark 2s

@@Justin-ny6un Justin for gosh sakes, not so - the Z6 and Z7 were the first Nikon Mirrorless and they are AMAZING cameras in their own right. Z6II is interesting, going to have to see if there's focus improvements to really make me upgrade from the Z6. Not that the Z6 is bad, but improvements are improvements. There's a few things menu wise that I hope trickle down to the Z6, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't. Selecting face/eye/animal eye detect as part of the focus mode select, longer exposure timer to name a couple. I wouldn't mind if the AF wide/face/eye detect made it too, but maybe that's some kind of processing limit, same with eye detect in video. But please, Nikon, can we ditch the 30m record limit already? :D Great stuff Ricci, thanks!

Definitely will be adding a Z6II to my two D5 bodies, for a total of three cameras again, just sold my D4s to afford to buy the grip and Z6II. I'm mainly finally buying the Z6II due to it now having a full battery grip and faster fps, buffer, etc. I need the Z6II to be able to shoot like my D5 bodies do, without the herky jerkey 12fps and low buffer. Obviously better AF tracking is another big decision that matters to me, and why I didn't buy the original Z6 that I had tested. As long as the Z6II with battery grip works closely enough to my D5 bodies, I'll be very happy, I know there will be major differences here and there, but I just need it to perform close to as well and not slow me down. Good on Nikon and I'm sure I'll one day own the Z9, but until then I'm looking forward to quite shutter only, san mirror for situations where I need that, since I'm a photojournalist that would be press conferences, PGA Golf, etc.

You are going to be in for a treat once you get some native Z glass
@patricksmith25534 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielh7718 I don't think I'll be buying any Z-mount glass, just because I'm already treated out quite well. I have the 500mm f4E VR FL, 70-200mm f2.8E VR FL, 24-70mm f2.8E VR, 16-35mm f4 VR. So FTZ adapter and I already own some of the sharpest lenses Nikon ever made and I got lucky with my 24-70mm VR, it's very sharp wide open edge to edge on my D5 bodies. My 70-200mm FL and 500mm FL are ridiculously sharp edge to edge at f4 and the 70-200mm is very sharp also wide open. There is no equivalent Z-mount lens that is worlds better or even noticeably better than the lenses I use everyday, with exception to 16-35mm, which I don't use and don't really even care for. I should sell that and maybe get one native lens, the newer 20mm f1.8S, would be a maybe lens for me and ditch the 16-35mm.
@lcador94 жыл бұрын
@@patricksmith2553 Similar boat for me but with the 500mm PF. I use the D5 rather than my Z7 because focusing speed and other aspects of the auto focus system perform more efficiently. I believe this is due to, a large extent, to dual processors in the D5 and not having to use a lens adapter. My hope is the Z7 II will improve AF performance for fast action shooting so I can use the available 45 megapixels. Shame that Nikon to date has not delivered a native super-telephoto. If they had or do would you be tempted?
@patricksmith25534 жыл бұрын
No I would not be tempted at this point by a native Z-mount telephoto, but I hear their is going to be 400mm f2.8 S first. I am a big fan of that type of lens and have owned most versions of it, however I’m now using the 500mm f4E FL. What would tempt me more is if the Z6 II works better AF wise and with the FTZ. The Z6 with FTZ worked ok with the 400mm f2.8 VR and 500mm f4 E VR FL, but not great. Canons adapter AF wise was for some reason is better than Nikons. I tried the EOS R and now R5 with my colleagues 400mm f2.8 IS III lens it worked almost flawlessly, very fast. Unfortunately the FTZ is somehow not as good, not sure why or how but it could be a number of reasons. So I’m mainly hoping for the Z6II to perform closer to my D5’s even when adapting lenses. We’ll see soon I guess, lol! The Z9 does not sound tempting, I got rid of my D850 and don’t want a high megapixel flagship camera!
@lcador94 жыл бұрын
Patrick, thank you for the detailed responses which I found very helpful. Our needs and views seem to differ on but a single way. Unfortunately, I am a bit addicted to BIF and post cropping is benefited by the 45 megapixels of the Z/7. I love my 500mm PF but also am disappointed when adapted to the Z7. It is wonderful on my DSLRs but the smaller and lighter form factor of the Z7 benefits my aging body. Perhaps the AF in the Z7 II will be improved with adapted lenses, hope, hope....

The Z 24-70 2.8 pushed the Tamron G2 to the curb also and I loved that Tamron. Adapted lens just don't function as well. I only had the Nikon 70-200 f/4 which is excellent but with the Z 70-200 f/2.8 in the bag it is more then worth the extra size and weight. Also, since 200mm is the longest native focal length, I can use a 1.4TC and have a native short range BIF alternative. I hope the Z7 II will offer improved performance with this combination and that longer glass starts coming. If I had only specialized in macro or selfies my bank account would be much larger.

No 70-200 on the market can match the S. Of course, law of diminishing returns. Tamron's G2 is a lot cheaper, whether the better quality of the S and better ergonomics is worth that extra $$$ is up to the user.

What I am hoping is that the dual processors allow the cameras to shoot at the top burst speed with continuous AF focus, and also that the EVF does not start slowing down it's refresh rate at top burst speed. One thing you may have left out is the improved low light performance including sophisticated back-illuminated design (both censors) to deliver an improved high ISO noise performance and low light AF capabilities. Perhaps you could conduct some low light test as well in your upcoming videos. Thank you Ricci. Based on my style and use, my Z6 still fits for me. The one thing I am really interested in is the improvement to the AF Eye detect system. Based on your samples here I am underwhelmed. Yes, the large area AF is nice; but when watching your outdoor movements it was clear that the eye detect was not finding you when you stepped away from the camera. Now maybe zoom lenses would be better from a distance; but the sample did not pick up your eye unless you were close to the camera. If this is actually the case, then I will wait for future improvements or cameras that will bring up AF Eye detect to the level of Sony. Looking forward to your next installment.

I am fed up with all these Nikon knockers who spend so much time putting down the new cameras when all they have to go on is launch material - possibly it is because they haven't been given hands on experience. I just find it sad that they are in a position to influence so many potential buyers. Keep up the good work.

I have been saying that for a long time, and Nikon knows how landscape photographers desperately need this feature, but they are so ignorant and arrogant that they add couple of new features to the camera and put a new price tag on it and call the camera pro. They can add this feature to z bodies via firmware, they just don’t want to because there won’t be enough difference between last camera models. Feature that Fuji had for years

As an owner of a Z6 ive been eagerly awaiting news on the AF upgrades, I know these are only preproduction units, but in stills has your experience been so far that the AF works better? Just because when I choose to shoot wildlife with say the 200-500 on the Z6 ive been majorly annoyed with its lackluster AF

Thanks for your always appreciated breakdown on the new goodies :) Having a Z 6 already I think my personal conclusion is to buy glass and wait until next year for the next level body (Z 8/9) and newly added tele primes to fully ditch my beloved D500s. I may also consider the Z 7 II but I don't see a reason to replace my Z 6 with the Z 6 II.

That was quite comprehensive and good enough for me to decide on which body will work for me. I primarily shoot birds and wildlife, preferring action, with the D500 & D850. I was looking for a good body to shoot video, I presently use my D810, because it permits back button focus when tracking slow flying birds and you answered that very well. Thank you. I will wait for the Z9 for my action work, if it has the megapixels to support crops. A question I am looking to get an answer for, is how much lag is there in the view finder and how it will affect my on the wing images of fast flying birds. Great video!

Great video as always Ricci , really the best on KZbin ! 1- I'm really hoping that on final firmware, the eye autofocus will be faster than on the samples you showed, as those don't really look that much faster than my current Z6 which I still love. I'm really expecting at least a 40% improvement for continuous AF which I think should be reasonable considering the dual processors. 2- Could you please test the digital image stabilization for video and see if they improved it ? Currently as you know, it exhibits a lot wobbling when there is movement from the camera. Hopefully it got improved this time. These are really my main gripes regarding my current Z6, everything else works really well. Thanks a lot for your hard work !

I wonder if the banding issue is fixed. Boosting exposure and shadows sometimes shows banding in shadows.

Apparently the Z5 doesn't have this issue, so one can hope... I do see this banding occasionally on my Z6.

Seems to be some nice upgrades for photos and the prices are very reasonable. I wish Nikon would have done more for video to appeal to more users. Flip screen, 10bit, more bit rate options, uncropped 4k60. The autofocus is so good in video I think they missed the mark. As a mainly photo shooter the Z6 has been very good for me and the mkII looks great.

Things I would love to see in the test of the Z6ii: 1. Eye Af vs Canon R6 vs Sony a7iii 2. IBIS vs Canon R6 is the difference relevant for the real world usage 3. Color vs the original Z6 (compare 2 photos with the same settings especially for skin tones)

Hello Ricci, Thanks for this first look video. For future Z6/Z7 vs. Z6 II/Z7 II video's I'd like to see what improvements the second Expeed processor has brought to the AF performance. Has the AF in general become faster, is the Eye AF and Face AF better/faster and more reliable (catches the face or eye faster/earlier), and if the AF follows the subject better/faster when compared to the original Z6/Z7 models (with firmware 3.0 or later). Do these new II's 'wake up' faster, activate the viewfinder and respond faster? I've had a Z6 (with Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S) for about 8-9 month. I shoot concerts and have found the Z6's response sometimes a bit too slow, though I got some great shots with it (you can see some of my photos in the recently released live album "Third Stage" by the band Flying Colors). I sold my Z6 and purchased a D780 when Covid-19 hit and shows were cancelled. But I miss the WYSIWYG concept of shooting with a mirrorless and I believe that mirrorless is the future. I'll most likely buy a Z camera in the future, but if this will be sooner or later depends on whether Nikon has improved on some of the performance issues I've mentioned above.

Hi Ricci, thank you for the great video. You definitely answered some questions I had. I’ve currently got a z7 and shoot mostly landscape, I do encounter PDAF banding on my z7 at ISO64 - 100 on strongly backlit and high dynamic range scenes when even modestly bringing up shadows (no crazy 5 stop pushes). I’d be curious if Nikon has solved this issue in the z7II - apparently the new z5 doesn’t have this issue so I’m hopeful. Thanks again.

Hi, thank you for the informative video. Would you be able to clarify what's the FPS on Z7 in H (not H+)? What's the maximum frame rate you can get with tracking? How's the blackout compared to 1st gen (both Z6 and Z7)? As a current Z6 owner (+ 6 lenses) - are there any future firmware upgrades planned, or the hardware is maxed out and we shouldn't count on any future AF-C improvements?
@kaijan28084 жыл бұрын
I own the Z6 and love it. The new version has nice features, but I was only willing to upgrade for a flip out screen. Unfortunately Nikon neglected this (again). Is such a pain to take photos in portrait from a low or high angle. So I wait for the Z6iii
@carlb4012 жыл бұрын
I currently use the Z7 and hoping when the Z7 iii comes out it has a fully articulating screen and the extended shutter times can be changed from fixed values to infinitely variable times like on the canon r5. 🙂

Hey Ricci - thanks for the awesome videos. I wondered if you can tell me if there is any speed difference between the original Z's and the mkii's in terms of how fast the viewfinder comes on. Not in terms of it coming on from flipping the camera on switch but when using the eye sensor. So raising your eye to the viewfinder. In the original Z's, although quite quick there is a very small delay. I wonder if this has improved. Whilst not important to most, its important to me and there have been a few occasions in use where ive quicky raised the camera to my eye and miss a split second moment through not being able to see whats happening straight away. Whilst this is a rare occurance, and correct me if im wrong, The Z6/Z7, at least with the original mk i's, you cant put the viewfinder to always ON, you can have it so its viewfinder only or priorty but it always uses the eye sensor to come on and off - I know this is to save battery life of course.
@jimowens81054 жыл бұрын
As a landscape and studio stills hobbyist I can't find the use case requirement for mirrorless. Sure the WYSIWYG on the back of the camera is nice, but I have that on the D850 when I need it and when I don't the battery life isn't impacted when I look through the optical viewfinder. Focus? I do most of that manually. Exposure? I do that manually too. The only reason for me to switch is image quality, and there again the D850 is still better. Maybe, in a few more years when the Z lenses are filled out and we have a 60+ megapixel sensor I'll have to move.
@solkga504 жыл бұрын
Great and useful video as always Ricci! How much of the improvement do you think can be implemented in firmware for the Z6/Z7 - especially the eye/face AF in wide L mode. Also, the reduced viewfinder blackout - would be great to see how this affects the continuous shooting experience. Thanks again.

I hope the 50 F1.2 S tests will be done with Z6/7 ii with a model and face/eye detection. Can it keep up with any moderate fast movement of the pretty standard portrait photoshoot wide open. But it looks like it's not mr. Ricci cup of tea. Either way, thanks for the honest preview.

It seems to me like the original 6/7 could handle a couple of these upgrades. Like the ability to switch the focus direction and the eye detection in large area, or at least the ability to access those options from the i-menu, right? Am I just crazy? And if not what are the chances they get added to the originals via firmware?
