I Am a Nikon ambassador and motion picture still photographer and have been using the z6 and z7 since they first came out.
I have been shooting the Nikon Z6, Z6II, Z7 and Z7II on Disney, Marvel and Netflix films including Shang-Chi, Thor Love and Thunder, Mulan, Kate, Escape from Spiderhead, Extraction and Action Unit on the latest Bond film No Time to Die.
Some features and functions may differ with final release firmware.

haha, I know right! I have to do an update because since then I have added more tweaks, one its to basically turn everything off, like noise reduction and vignette, that sort of thing. Best to start with it all turned off then turn on as you need it and see if you get a difference in performance. I am feeling like I do with focus and high iso quality but it's more than likely I am just learning the camera. Just remember you don't want to use the object detection all the time. Off is also a mode remember!

Hey Jas, thanks for that - a little more detail on the menu system that many are not including. Although I ordered 3 days after announcement here in Blighty, don't expect to see mine in Dec but hey - you never know. I'll have to dig out the round-pin remote lead I had for my D700 again!

Nikon's choice not to use the AF assist of an external flash in the Z series is in some cases a minor disaster. It is only a small group that misses that, it is a pity that Nikon does not adjust this. (The z would not detect the red color, but if the light is turned on anyway, custom flashes can be made)

Hi Jasin, love your work mate. I have received my Z9 and while setting it up I've discovered that there is no Exposure Delay Mode on the Z9 (usually found in the custom settings menu) which is pretty standard across the likes of the D500, D810, D850 Z6and 7 series cameras. The only option is the Self Timer which can not be added to the iMenu like it can on the Z6II and Z7II. Having an Exposure Delay (preferable) or the Self Timer available on the iMenu would be an advantage for many who shoot long exposures, landscapes or Astro and seems like a reasonable request to a future Firmware update.

Good morning Jasin. My Z9 is on the UPS truck and will be delivered in a few hours. Are you going to do a video for setting up the Z9 for action like you did for the Z6ll? I set my Z6 to the settings your suggested i.e. 12 bit and it was a major improvement. I would love to see a similar video with your settings, function buttons etc. Thanks. Hi Jasin, thanks for this video, very informative. I left a comment on Jared’s Z9 A1 R3 af test, after your comment re the AF tracking setting to have been set on 1 instead of 5, any chance you can comment on there and whether erratic and steady makes a difference. ? Also I found on my D850 that keeping AF/C on focus rather than release worked best, how is it on the Z9 as I noticed you had A1 set to focus also ?

Thanks. Very helpful. Q: Is there an equivalent on the Z9 to U1, U2, U3 customer user settings? I'm multiplexing and perhaps I missed with the phone interrupting my viewing. But I find those extremely useful on the Z7. I'll have to think how to change my approach without them.

@@JasinBoland Thanks. I've spent hours figuring out the Shooting Menu Banks and Custom Banks. That they change dynamically in use instead of allowing the user to return to the stored settings seems a step in the wrong direction to me. I'm storing my setup on an XQD card, but doubt in practice I'll actually stop to restore them :(

If shooting raw to card 1 and JPEG to card 2 and I protect an image will the protection be applied to both images? In Photo Mechanic I ingest only the protected or locked images and it's annoying on the D6 that protecting only applies to slot 1 and not slot 2, forcing me to shoot Raw & JPEG to slot 1.

I don't shoot both as I just do a conversion after I have finished doing my kill passes. Sorry I am not much help I do know it speeds the process and I would think they would retain the same file numbers

that's an interesting concept but I doubt you can and it would slow down the process and shooting action I could not imagine a reason to do it but yeah, great thoughts there.

@@JasinBoland well here are my thoughts to ask this question: you rely upon your card but in the rare case of failure you want to have a good quality copy of your images. Probably never happens but if so raw he* would be better than jpeg.

@@ulysses01 I was actually in my hotel in Prague and the light pulses so it's not hertz flicker but the actual light. The camera was my beautiful Zfc and 28mm 2.8.

Hi Jason, I have a brand new Z9 and am struggling with the menus. The Fn buttons and the menu buttons ( even though they are set up how I want them ) don't seem to save. Any ides what I'm doing wrong?

Jasin, I frequently use the metering button on my dSLR and move from matrix to spot to centre weighted and I do it on the fly. How do I do this on this Z9, please ?

I would really appreciate someone giving a real assessment of the Z9 concerning high ISO and noise levels. AT what ISO does noise start to appear? What other Nikon camera would you compare the high ISO noise level to. My D850 and D6 are miles apart concerning this. I routinely shoot my D6 at ISO 12,800 with no real noise problems. At ISO 1,600 my d850 produces lots of noise. Where does the Z9 stand? Thanks

I shoot a few thousand framnes a day on film set and mostly dont bother going over 6400 iso but for that its sensational just make sure you turn all the noise reduction and everything else off. I find a little bit of noise is better than the processing.

I feel you have so much more knowledge to share if you were to go through methodically , explaining more in detail of the settings and benefits of certain settings. @@JasinBoland no while I know I will be amazed with the tech. I’m pretty much not interested due to it being so big and heavy. I switched to mirrorless to get away from my heavy dslr. I wish Nikon would have released a small body Z8 or Z7III at the same time. Sort of like what Canon did in late 2020 with the R5 and R6. This would have given shooters more options based on needs and price point. They went for a much needed cash grab. I’ve known personally two faithful Nikon shooters (like myself) that have switched to Sony and Canon from Nikon due to wanting good AF in a small body (although I didn’t switch to Canon or Sony. I’ve actually went another direction as I preordered the new OM Systems (formerly Olympus) new micro four thirds flagship “OM-1” camera. Stacked sensor, over 1000 all cross type AF points, advanced computational settings, live ND filter (mode) built in, (bird detection) motorcycle, car, planes, trains detection etc etc. I’m a big wildlife and bird shooter and I’m excited for the new bird eye AF. Apparently it’s real good. The new (sigh…only 20mp) stacked sensor however is promising due to said 2 additional stops of dynamic range. Much higher ISO range and double processing power along with more than 2 times sensor scan rate increase (read out speed) & a 5.76 million dot bright viewfinder at 120 fps refresh rate. There are a few things DP review said wasn’t so hot but I believe it can and will get better with a firmware update. I want to use this camera as a fun camera for my birding and wildlife /landscape / street photography as that’s my motivation. I’m gonna keep my Z6II and probably get rid of my D500 and a few telephoto zoom lenses. I am also buying a Olympus 300 f4 IS PRO lens (600 mm equivalent) and a 1.4 teleconverter (tele for once in a while). So while I am blown away at the insane value of the Z9 but after long thought (especially) considering full frame lens prices I decided to go a slightly different direction. Now if I was a PRO shooter like you then I’d have much more to consider. Now of course when Nikon puts out a camera that is what I’m looking for I’ll consider that one! I love Nikon and their dynamic range as I feel Nikon colors are so hard to beat. I think they are better than Sony and Canons colors. Take care brotha!

D850 was touted at master of everything; When in fact, it is average at everything, master of nothing; I tested it yesterday against my D500; D850 is the most over rated camera to ever exist. Z9?

D500 and D850 are two very different animals and for sport there's probably not a better camera around than the D500 but I'll stand by my words that the D850 is probably the best DSLR that will ever be made. hopefully we can agree to disagree on this one.

D850 at the time it launched, is the best high mega pixel full frame camera. It may not be as good as D5 an D500 for sports, but pretty much everything else it is a better camera.

@@JasinBoland It's not just about whether or not I want to go Shutterless. I regularly shoot my D6 at ISO 12,800. Thats with very little noise. I already have the Z9 preordered. I'm wanting to get info about how well the Z6 does with noise at high ISO. Please give me a comparison to another Nikon Camera. Thanks
