Great review. These compact, discreet, but still stylish cameras like the Fuji X100, the Leica CL and now the Nikon Z fc (and maybe the Leica Q or M10 with a small lens) I think have a wonderful place in the camera world. They offer higher image quality, more control, and a better outlet for artistic expression than even the latest iPhone cameras, yet are scaled back enough to where you can carry and use them in casual situations - essentially almost anywhere. Sure a Canon 1DX/R3 or Sony α1 far outperform it for serious professional usage, but half the people drooling over those cameras online don't even need that performance most of the time, let alone in their every day life. I'm glad camera companies are offering high quality options for people who want something very usable but not too "serious" - I like to go out with a camera without looking like a cliche of a reportage or sports photographer from the 1980s!

I ended up trading it in for the 24-200 which is a better quality lens than the 50-250. Have enjoyed shooting with it around Alaska. Rollieflex will want to be on a tripod while FM3a will be much more portable. HINT: for film, a LEICA is a better 35mm camera than any SLR as the lenses are so much better. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think the 30 min 4k video limit has to do with the EU, and not necessarily the capabilities of the camera itself (ie. the processor and sensor). I remember reading some article that to get around some tax, cameras sold in the EU had a limit of 29:59 max before they would be "taxed" or considered video cameras (Which may have lead to additional tax or classification) and since it would be easy for someone to simply import a grey market to get around it, most cameras have this limit. I don't know if this applies to 8k video though (as the Z9) supposedly can record over 30 minutes of 8k video in one go, but many cameras (at least up until recently) had a 30 min limit on 4k. For the ISO, I don't think many people would want to shoot below the native ISO (and many people advise against this anyway). It will be interesting to see if NIkon continues to update the AF on the ZFc. I know in the most recent update (a few weeks back) they did improve the aF for video, but sadly, the Z50 did not receive this update, so the Zfc might have a slightly longer life span in terms of features and updates (via firmware) than the Z50 (then again, the Zfc is about a year newer, despite sharing a lot of the same technology as the Z50, like the sensor and processor). If the Zfc is anything like my Z6 II, I would expect that eye AF is decent, but tracking of unpredictable subjects (which has always been a challenge for the Z cameras) will still suffer. I think only the Z9 is really suited for true wildlife photography with it's revised and revamped AF system coupled with the Expeed 7 processor. My only potential grip with the Zfc (after playing with one) is it feels a bit cheap compared to the Fuji XT30, which feels like it has more metal and is more sturdily built, and is cheaper. But supposedly both the ZFc and XT30 have magnesium bodies but the Zfc just has a plastic feel to it, and for the money, this is something I would be on the fence about. I mean the Z50 feels more like the XT30 and costs less, but it doesn't have the film-like look and feel to it. I would have liked to see NIkon make this a little more, but make the body feel more like a metal body and maybe give it a UHS-II card slot. Even if it meant charging another $200, I think it would have still sold for $1100 versus the $960 it is, with the heavier body and faster card slot. If you're buying any Z DX camera you should not consider using your existing F-mount glass in general. For the FF cameras, especially the Z6 II and Z7 II with the grip, maybe, because the camera is larger so it balances better, but I wouldn't consider using F-mount DX glass with the Zfc especially (because of the lack of the grip so handling might be harder with longer/larger lenses) or the Z50 (the Z50 might be a bit easier because of the grip).

Hats off to Nikon for producing a digital camera that from a few steps away so closely resembles my beloved film FM both in physical resemblance and the placement of the controls. I purchased a Fujifilm X100F camera a few years ago as an easy to carry 'travel camera' for those times I didn't want to carry a bulkier SLR with lenses and am very happy with it, but had I known that Nikon was going to issue a virtual digital clone to my FM I would have waited to purchase a digital camera and bought the Zfc instead. Can it use older Nikon 'legacy' lenses? (I have a collection of non-AI/AI/AI-S lenses)
@KenRockwellTV3 жыл бұрын
The Zfc can use old lenses, but not very well. Stick to the 16-50 and 50-250 for best results they don’t get Klunky.

A great review Ken. I am deciding whether to get a Z50 or a ZFC (I have a D5500 right now) I know pros don't use on camera flash, but if I got the Zfc as an all round camera, how would you take photos at night in a restaurant or at a party without flash? Would you wind up the ISO or use an off camera flash or LED etc. Or just take a dark photo
@KenRockwellTV3 жыл бұрын
We all use on-camera flash for daylight fill.
@KenRockwellTV3 жыл бұрын
Night shots? Those all shot in auto ISO hand held, no flash needed. For party be sure to set a shutter speed of about 1/125 for slowest speed in auto ISO. Ideally an iPhone works better faster for people photos in dim conditions

Hi Ken! Sorry for joining the party late, but great review as always. I was considering purchasing this camera to use my old AIS lenses (28 f/2.8 and 85 f/1.4). Your take on this seems negative, isn’t it? What’s your advice on this? (I already have a d5100 with 17-55 2.8)

Don’t bother. It works crappy with full frame lenses - no aperture control. Get the only full frame Nikon Df www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/df.htm or any full frame DSLR and they work great. Sadly nikon and no one makes a proper adapter that can communicate with all the mechanical controls of manual lenses, you have to use a 35mm or FX DSLR camera for it to work well.

Like your ISO series illustrations. Goes to show that despite the super-high settings available on newer cameras in recent years you’re *still* looking at a serious drop in details as you pass ISO 800 just like it was in 2007. Maybe it’s a stop or 2 better, and since pixels are smaller the relative detail loss is a bit less but not as much as one might think.
