I bought one of these over a month ago with both new lenses. I also have a Z 7. I love this camera. I used it at Thanksgiving and Christmas family events on both stills and video. It is so easy to use I have now switched to using the Z 50 instead of my iPhone 11 Pro all the time. This camera has super ergonomics and holding and using it is just so much better than a big full frame with big full frame glass or a phone with no grip. This new body performs excellently. The focus is very good for both video and stills. In AFF mode it just kept my 11 month old grand daughter in focus hand held in mid to lower indoor light with the 16-50mm 4K 24. I thought the standard profile looks great and don't care about more advanced picture settings. And I was pretty amazed at how well this camera compensated in that video for bright back lighting automatically. I have taken it out several times shooting landscape with both the 16-50 and 50-250. My results were excellent. The image stabilization with these lenses is great. And for lower light shots this camera puts out very good raw files. When I need higher resolution I can use my Z 7. But I want to emphasize that unless you are a pixel peeper the 20 mega pixels of the Z 50 is plenty. And this sensor seems to make the most of it's pixels. I want to disagree with you on one of your points. I had a Nikon D5500. It was my favorite digital camera until I bought and used the Z 50. The D5500 had a flippy screen. I liked the flippy screen, but unless you are a vlogger the up down like on the Z 50 and Z 7 are better than the ones that flip out to the side and around like the D5500, in my opinion. For close in video where you have to get low to the ground I love the flip up screen. Flip out, not so much. Finally, this Nikon works really well with Lightroom. Better than the Sony A7iii or Sony HX99 that I have had until a month ago. And the Nikon Z 50 jpegs right out of camera are, in my opinion, a level up from the Sonys I just had and the Nikon D750 & D5500 I sold 14 months ago. Perhaps Nikon has improved the way the D5500 and D750 output jpegs, but I only have my files from 14+ months ago to compare. And this improvement goes to the raws too from both the Z 50 and the Z 7. I am getting really good raw files from the get go by using the Nikon raw files with Lightroom Classic. I have upped my raws to full size 14 bit so that may be part of it. The Sony raw files when using uncompressed were so big I stopped using them and went with compressed. The Nikons can give you full 14 bit at a reasonable size so I go with those. Nice video by the way. Please talk a little bit more about shooting and not always gear, even though I liked this gear video.

I own quite a bits of Nikon glass and 3 of their SLR's but its hard to support them when they bring out a camera like this. Its clearly meant to compete with the micro 4/3's that quite a few people are using for video but its missing IBIS making it not a competitor at all. You can tell Nikon aren't taking the camera seriously too because the SD card is in the battery draw very annoying and something only done on low end cameras, the pop up flash is manually opened to save them money. The flip down screen is useless when the main time you would use it is on a tripod and you cant. Then to top it all off its got the sensor thats starting to age out of D500 (I own) which should have been a 24MP like D7200 which I also own and gets better shots. They went in the right direction with Z6 and Z7 image quality wise they are great but lets face it focus wise and the like they are only about as good as the MKII A7 from Sony. I hope they can catch up next time I really do and they stop using the XQD cards that are basically dead in the water. Sony made them and they don't even use them themselves.
@RobertNuttmann5 жыл бұрын
@@LaveaFirmis In my opinion everything you have said in your reply is inaccurate. 1. Nikon made the Z 50 as an upgrade to their DSLR DX business. I used to own a D5500 which I loved. And the Z 50 is the next step to modernize it for better video, EVF, and take Z glass. It is not meant to compete with micro 4/3, it competes with the Canon, Sony, and Fuji crop sensor cameras. 2. None of it's competitors have IBIS except one of the more expensive Sony bodies. Both of the new lenses designed for this camera have VR, and do not need IBIS. This is the same as DSLR DX cameras. Some of the DX DSLR lenses have VR but none of the bodies do. 3. I don't take the SD card out of my Z 50 most of the time. I plug the camera directly into the computer or wirelessly download files. And even when I do take the card out it is no issue where it is stored. 4. I am glad the pop up flash is manually operated, I prefer that instead of it popping up when I don't want to use it. 5. I totally disagree with you about the flip back screen. The way it is is the best way to mount it unless you are a vlogger, and I am not. My D5500 had a flippy out screen, I like the one in the Z 50 better. 5. I have owned both the 24 mega pixel sensor like in the D7200 and now the Z 50 21 mega pixel sensor. The D500 - Z 50 sensor is newer than the old 24 mega pixel one. The Z 50 is better in high ISO than the older 24mp. From my personal experience both the Nikon 21 and 24 mega pixel sensors are good. You are also wrong about the auto focus in the Z 7. I owned a Sony A7iii up to six weeks ago. For my style of shooting I prefer the Z 7 or Z 50 auto focus to the Sony.A7iii. I do a lot of macro shooting and the Nikon offer pin point auto focus which I really like. All three of these cameras have eye auto focus and to me they all work well. I have used A Sony A7ii a while back. It has much inferior auto focus to the Z 50, Z7, or A7iii. XQD cards are much faster than SD cards. I like XQD cards on larger mega pixel cameras like the Z 7. I have no idea why Sony does not use them. Likely for the same reason they don't put a full function touch screen on any of their cameras.
@LaveaFirmis5 жыл бұрын
@@RobertNuttmann Its all just opinion at the end of the day. I just feel the Z50 was close to being a better camera that could have cornered part of the market for Nikon after some missteps and taking too long really to go mirrorless and gained back some ground. I'd like Nikon to do well even if its just to force Sony to put a useable menu on their camera. Fair points I agree with quite a bit of that just a few things though. 1. The Z50 is the camera to replace crop sensor DSLR's but at that price point its not enticing people who would be interested in things like the D5600. I guess for me all the 'weaknesses' of the camera like the ones mentioned in the video would be fine if it wasn't as expensive its not far off but it is off. 2. Fair fewer of the competitors have IS in camera than I thought but super lazy look the Panasonic G90 at the same ish price does. But I think they should have more of a road map for native IS glass for it. At the moment the higher end faster glass has no IS at longer focal lengths. 3. Its not the taking card out at the end of the day for me, its if you have it on a gimbal or tripod you cant change cards without wasting quite a bit of time taking it off the camera and rebalancing after. It used to drive me insane when I had the Canon 500D then when I got the D7000 etc the issue went away. 4. Fair enough with the flash I guess like the card thing its just how you use the camera, I found it easier to have an electronic pop up because I didn't have to move as far to open it so it was quicker for me. 5. Again I guess use case but I use the D500 screen for low down shots near mud (example) that the Z50 cant help with and using it on tripod having it flip all the way down it no help at all like the D500. But if went out to the side like D5500 then it would useful for vlogger's, I cant see why they didn't do that I'm not sure when down is better than to the side but again preference. 6. Most of the stuff I do is low light and D500's low pixel count shows up noise far quicker than the D7200 when I tried them back to back. Then after I did that I thought I have to be wrong but if you look at the DXO even just pure numbers the D500's sensor is actually worse than the D7200 and D7500 sadly. I'm glad for the better focusing system though but I miss having the little extra crop 24 gives to tidy up when shooting fast. Maybe they had to put in a sensor from 2016 because they don't make there own sensors 'shrugs'. I found when I borrowed a Z6 I couldn't get it focus as well as my A7 MKiii for fast motion paced stuff so I had to go back to the D500 and A7 MK iii for different situations. The A7 I found could hold an eye better than the Z6 but wildlife I preferred to use the D500, plus the extra reach. I have heard (don't know if its true) the Z50 focuses better than the Z6 and Z7 I guess if it does its because they have learnt lessons from them and its newer. As far as XQD goes my issues are they are way too expensive and harder to get, even on 10FPS burst on both my cameras I never shoot long enough to fill the buffer using SD (I've never met someone who does come to think of it that doesn't spray and pray) and if I can shoot S-Log 4K to SD like I do then speed is no benefit either. All XQD's benefits don't seem to out way the £130 for 64GB very £60 for an SD. I 100% agree with you on the touch screen thing, the implementation on the touch screen on the A7 and D500 is awful but the A7 is worse.

@laurentd99803 жыл бұрын
Hi, very nice review, I bought the Z50 myself and I am really impressed by its perfect ergonomics both in handling and in menus and its wide range of features, it really is a jewel, and leagues ahead of Canon's EOS M50 that I first considered buying instead (and would have bitterly regretted buying, I am glad I carefully made comparative research between these 2 cameras before deciding!!!). Anyway, just one little inaccurracy at 2:50 in your video: you mention the sensor is a BSI type whereas it really is a FSI sensor. Not that it matters this much on this sensor that already has an impressive dynamic range due to its 'lower-than-average' resolution (compared to competitors') and its lack of low-pass filter, but a BSI type would still deliver better sensitivity and probably better, lower base ISO. Now, everyone seems to give a lot of importance to IBIS, which I find a bit overrated since any type of stabilization won't be of any help anyway if you don't have a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the subject in any situation other than still landscape with no wind or macro, both scenarios where you might use a tripod anyway... And to me, lens stabilisation is more than enough, and many generations of photographers did away with this just fine before it existed as we all know or experienced ourselves... Conversely, what I think is actually more of a sore point is the lack of a self-cleaning sensor mechanism like on the Z6 or Z7... Granted, this kind of mechanism isn't perfect, it still generally proves quite efficient in getting rid of static dust particles (but won't of course be able to remove greasy dust). And lastly, the Z lens range has been really poor after more than 2 years, especially with these mere 2 kit lenses that make the full of the available DX range! Granted there is a 18-140 mm DX lens supposed to come in the first half of 2021, but really the offering is much poorer than Canon's, Fuji's, Sony's or Panasonic's... And as to the FTZ adapter I find it really cumbersome, it adds a lot of weight and bulk to the camera, makes it unbalanced and unstable when you lay it on a flat surface, and adds of course about an inch and a half (3.2 cm) to the length of an AF-S lens... My Sigma 18-200 mm lens that was less than 9 cm in length now is about 12 cm long, and about 150g heavier with the FTZ adapter...

Only issue I've ever had with the flip out screens is people and things hit it especially in crowds. I used to use a Canon G3, G4, G6, G11 and while it didn't happen often it was annoying to have it hit someone or something. I don't personally even know if I'll use the flip down screen beyond overhead shots at events in crowds. The A1000 uses a flip down screen but since it was a compact no one cared enough to complain for clicks if you know what I mean. It's an option but if you don't need it, you'll notice that the waist level orientation is faster to deploy than many cameras. The complaints while valid is funny since most photographers and videographers pretty much use LCD screens flat, or waist level with no complaints. Add something different and people lose their minds. Flip out screens are #1 in my book. Flip down is #2. Flip up is #3.

Many thanks for a fair and informative review. I have the Z50 two-lens kit and am having great fun with it. The lenses are fantastic. I haven't done any A-B comparisons with my Fuji kit zooms, but I strongly suspect the Nikon newcomers are sharper. Occasionally when I'm zoomed fully in (i.e. 50 or 250mm) the AF freezes and I have to adjust the zoom ring before it responds. That's been my only issue to date, and it's not common. I don't share your frustration with the EVF, which is fine for my use, but I do get EVF envy when I try out my brother's Panasonic G9, for example. BTW, I don't consider myself a beginner, but I do value portability, which is why my enthusiast bodies (e.g. D7100 and X-T2) often get left at home.

I picked up my z50 a month ago. So far I'm happy with it. But it would be great if it could handle VR in camera. Also not a fan of the flip screen. Even though I don't do vlog. I would be nice if the back screen would flip out like the canon cameras.

Just subscribed. Thank you. You are one of the few praising the Z50. May i ask if you think this is a camera that can do wedding work? Been with Nikon for 18 years and planning to switch to lighter systems like the Fuji. However, the ergonomics of tbe Z50 and PRICE plus my familiarity with the system has me on the fence. Planning to get primes mostly. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks again from a new subscriber .

I'm thinking of getting a z50 ,I've heard the shutter can be used in silent mode for Wildlife ? I use a D500,but the shutter is just too noisy for Mammals at close range,and not really any quieter on low continuous,IL keep the D500 for BIFs ,and maybe the Z50. With FTZ adapter on my 200- 500 might be better for Mountain Hares,Red Foxes.What do you think regarding the shutters quiet mode on the Z50,regards Bri.

Would you consider this a viable upgrade from a d3400 or more of a sidestep? I have a d3400 that recently got water damaged so I'm saving for a new camera(aps-c because I have a few lenses already) and am torn between this and the d7500, or just saving even more for the d500. What are your thoughts?

I photographed a windmill in Copenhagen at dusk recently. I liked the composition because the windmill was framed by trees, which were bare of leaves due to Winter. Anyway, I used the photo as wallpaper on my PC screen but now the windmill is irrelevant - all I keep focussing on is how many tiny twigs on the trees I can see, despite it being a handheld shot at high ISO. The IQ of the Z50 is stunning.

Nice review. How do you think it stacks up against the Cannon EOS RP and the Sony A6400 (Especially for video)? Those are both in a similar price point. Looking for a camera to replace my camcorder for YT videos and thought it might be time to switch to something that can do great stills and great video.

The screen that flips just vertically is much faster in the typical use when one needs to shoot at a low angle. Canon has also used it like in M5 and M6. They do flip up 180 degrees on cameras that do not have the viewfinder in the center but with the viewfinder down is the only option
@reluca813 жыл бұрын
Nikon also had the flip out screen for the D5300. I wish they had the same for the newer models

Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking into the z50 to replace my D5100. I wanted something lighter, something that had the WiFi so I can just send my pictures to my Mac. I’m doing the trade in next week and getting the 2 lens that come with it.

I do a lot of indoor, available light photography and I was pleased and surprised at the results on Z50. I would say it is also a very amateur camera. I did a test on the kit lens and was surprised at their sharpness. One good point Nikon has done is to use very few mounts, I have a few nice F mount lenses the work well with the Z50 though one had to have its (lens) firmware updated.

Re: the flip screen. I have a Nikon D5100 whose screen flips out and around like you describe. I can't believe that (a) Nikon moved away from that and (b) other camera manufacturers don't have them either. All my video cameras (Sony, Canon) have the full-flip screens.

For starters, good job on the video. FocusGear is slow and didn't have one thing for z50 or z7ii, so I wouldn't use it. I have a Z50 and really like it. It's really good in low lighting with very high ISO settings. The buttons are positioned in ergonomically locations. Overall, you can use it to take professional pictures.

I disagree. I had a Nikon D5500 with a flippy screen. I much prefer the flip down and flip up of the Z 50.
@dct1245 жыл бұрын
Just think about all mirrorless cameras with a articulating screen. In actual use this is the best screen. Omit the flip down portion from your mind and it literally functions better than any current camera. The flip down is a bonus if you want to use it, otherwise be a professional and add an external monitor.
@DianaGladney5 жыл бұрын
That’s cool, whatever works for you but the flip down is a poor choice in my opinion. It’s weird but some will like it, I just don’t.
@dct1245 жыл бұрын
@@DianaGladney So if the screen didn't fully articulate down what would your opinion of it be? if you don't use it, it's literally just like any other camera on the market except the hinge happens to work better and faster. I compare it to the X-T3, XT30, a6600, etc. Now the a5000 is the best way to flip up, but the screen is in the way or obscured by a microphone, light, external battery, cage, etc. There's no perfect system.
@RobertNuttmann5 жыл бұрын
@@DianaGladney Diana I have used flip up on both Nikon bodies a lot, but cannot remember using flip down. I sometimes hold or have it on a tripod and flip the back screen up a little when shooting children and I am down low too or flowers when shooting waist high. I did also use the flippy screen when shooting flowers too, and it worked fine. The flippy back screen when shooting grand kids low did not work very well though. Just my shooting style.
