I bought the Z50 to build my Nikon Trinity for mirrorless. Let me say this lil camera has exceeded my expectations. I'm very happy. I will await the Pro Nikon mirrorless whenever it comes but I will cherish my time with my z50 and my Voigtlander's 40mm and 58mm along with both kit lenses for the z50. Winning!

Fantastic showcasing. Thank you your work is much appreciated. I honestly think z50 exceeded my expectation in all tests until video af. Not that af wasn't good or anything, the lenses difference are too obvious to ignore. I am literally speechless at the image sharpness of 50f1.8s. Meanwhile 35f1.8s being a good lens and close to 24f1.8s' performance in previous tests, shows its weakness in video af test by siding with an outstanding lens. Nikon has done an amazing job in this underrated 50f1.8s.

If you have to zoom in 300% to verify the differences, there is not differences, to the naked eye. Either one is a great camera, all they need is two card slots.

The z50 is probably one of the best all around apsc cameras. I love how Nikon left it at 20mp. Give it great all around performance. I just ordered a Z6 after using fuji apsc for the past couple of years. Looking forward to cleaner files and better dynamic range. Thanks for the video.

I just switched from Fuji to the Z7. It is several orders of magnitude better of a camera. The difference in video quality is huge, some of it is due to the lenses, some to the amazing colors. Now I am sellling all my Fuji gear. Z6 is an extreme value and beats the XT4 by a large margin.

What an amazing video. The Z50 is an amazing camera, is trully a monster, the focus was even faster than the Z6 if you watch it frame by frame. The only thing Z6 was superior to the Z50 was Ibis.

The Z50 is a bit faster focusing because it has fewer focus points (I believe it's 209 vs 273). When you get into really low light situations (not just high ISO, but actual low light) the Z6 will have the edge in terms of AF.

Thank you for this. This kind of comparison is just what is needed. My observations - The Z50 is grittier, and loses colour contrast at high ISO (but 12,600 is very high in anyone's view). The video image stabilisation and the colour is better on the Z6 but I think maybe the focus acquisition from the leaves in the background to the model was just a tad quicker on the Z50.. For most practical purposes, either would be good.

First time I saw the Z50, I thought it's a puppy of a cute I want one of those camera. The other day, reading up on FW v3 AF I noticed differences in the menus between Z50 and Z7. That made me spend the money on another prime instead. I would recommend the Z50 to everyone with limited budget - it really is great.

@@jamiekhokhar8705 - Yes, I would say it is. That said, for professional use, I would take the Z 5 instead (as it is in the same budget ballpark). Sharpness as you perceive it in the end depends on a few things, not just the camera. Lens quality, raw processing software, software to blow up beyond 100%, and the presence of a fuzzy filter (*) in the camera (or not). When you add more "pro" lenses (and that includes all the Z 1.8S primes, the 2.8S macro, etc.) at some point the size/weight advantage of the APS-C camera is lost. IBIS and other things become more important, like high ISO. The new Z fc is interesting today as it has a few things that the Z 50 doesn't have. Still, a Z 50 is a way into Nikon's Z lens system as it has the same mount as the full frame. The only mistake you can make is to wait too long and miss photo opportunities. (*) Fuzzy filter is what I call the anti-aliasing filter or low pass filter. These filters disperse the light traveling to photosite [x,y] so a bit of it reaches the neighbors of [x,y] too. They are a hardware help to make raw processing (wild-assed guessing of missing colors) easier and they have to make it easier to identify curved lines in the subject so as to prevent these to look jagged (regular pixels are square).

Honestly both are great options but if this is your first camera I would recommend the A6400 because Sony has a greater variety of native E Mount lenses to choose from. I shoot Nikon because I already own Nikon glass and cameras. But they all essentially do the same thing.

Hey, very cool video. I also can say the noise of the z7II is really bad😅. But the Z6II is a killer in low light especially on weddings…. Just for Product or really really really big prints I prefer the z7II. I also think there will be a z70 and it will have ibis and two sd card slots. Also there will be a z30 for the beginners. So my Gear is the Z50 for Landscape and Astro (mountains with the Milky Way) with the Tokina 11-20 2.8 is so amazing, you can also use a screwed filter system with this super wide lens ❤️. I also use the z50 for animals because of the crop with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 sports, this is a real killer. And I have the Z6II for portrait in low light situation in a church or at the wedding party. But for real, I use the z50 more and more on weddings and people …… especially the new firmware update 2.20 blows my mind. I fight with myself about selling the Z6II PS: I just use premium full frame lenses on the FTZ. Just the Tokina is for APS-C because of the Crop. Greetings from Germany ✌🏼

@@Photomeike I have the Z 24-70 f4 S, and it's a great lens. Sure, no pro level 2.8 reach, but it does the job for landscape and even some model shoots I did. However, I picked up an old Nikkor 105mm f2.5 off of eBay for around $110 for a lens perfect example/exterior worn a little bit, example that takes GREAT portraits via the focus peaking. Just a bit slower than auto eye focusing, but worked out really well. I liked my Opa's old nifty fifty so much (an old Nikkor 50mm f1.4 from the 70's) that I decided to get the 105 2.5, and it's been a blast! Thanks again, -Michael (my name).

The Z50, being Nikon’s latest entry, shows that Nikon has improved their eye auto focus, high ISO noise performance, and improved dynamic range to the level where they will compete well with Canon and Sony’s latest models. At this point if the Z6 never gets anymore updates I’d still be totally fine with their performance currently. Of course an upgrade is always appreciated but after firmware 3.0. They are solid cameras. The improvements that I am looking forward to can’t be done on a Z6 or Z7. Things like a battery grip, faster chipset, dual cards slots and stuff like that are reserved for the next model. I love shooting full frame so I don’t see a Z50 or anything like it replacing my full frame cameras. Although Z50 with a flip out screen with IBIS and I’m sold. It would be the perfect vlogging camera for me.

I actually did an entire shoot with the 16-50mm kit lens on the Z50 but i haven’t made that video yet. But in these comparisons I wanted to use the best lenses I had at my disposal. If i was going to give the Z50 a fighting chance then comparing a $150 kit lens on a z50 to a $1000 prime lens on the Z6 wouldn’t be a very fair fight.

You are forgetting that the Z6 has an AA filter and the Z5- doesn't, byt the way. So the Z50 will show a bit more sharpness on screen (since resolution doesn't generally matter on screen when talking about 20 vs 24 MP). Despite this, at 8:24 the bricks on the Z6 version appear slightly more detailed, but that is likely due to resolution, however the AA likely makes it a wash in the end. At 19:29 this lack of an AA filter is probably why the Z50 looks as sharp as the Z6 (which has an AA filter, although a low-power AA filter). As for the NR< if you remove the color noise reduction, the Z50 will show more noise. You don't have any chrominance NR applied, but you do have some color NR applied (which is the LR default). I would turn that off to get the real picture of performance. Your comparisons in terms of noise though do coincide with what I've seen elsewhere... the Z50 hold ups well up to about ISO 6400, then the FF cameras tend to have the advantage beyond that, although most people don't usually shoot beyond ISO 6400 anyway (at least regularly) so for the most part, the Z50 will be suitable for most people's needs. With higher ISOs you do loose a little color as a result of losing DR as well.

Hey thanks Marla! No I haven’t tried the XT-4. But this does give me an idea to make a video dedicated to how to get sharper images. My tips are to use good quality glass, Use higher shutter speeds, and use higher F-Stops of and lighting. The better your quality of light. The better quality of photos you will get.

Great comparison thx. Maybe you want stop down the full frame camera a full f-stop next time to compensate for the differences in depth of field and get an equal sharpness comparison.

Thank u very much for this video, really helpful for me. I have a d7200 and my idea was switch to FF with the Z6, but after this video I think I will wait for Nikon to come out a pro APSC cam and stay on APSC format. Why? Because I have good lens specific for DX, so can use with the ftz adapter. I just want a bit more megapixels (landscape), better EVF and an IBIS.. that woukd be a Z system apsc perfect for me. Thanks again!

Z50 kit lenses come with VR, the result is way better than using electronic stabilization

19:18. I don´t inderstand. You say, that If you´d shot that shoot at like f2.8, than there woudn´t be difference. As far as I know full frame will give you always shallower depth of field at the same focal length as a dslr. So it´s a real difference. Or you have used smaller aperture on the z50? And also there is huge difference in colors, vividness at the video af test. Z6 looks much better. I know you are comparing different things, but the image of the z6 rules.

Got my Z6 the other day, fantastic camera! I used to have a D3300 but i'm trying to get into video more too since it has great 4K! Iv'e been trying to make some small clips just to see what they look like on youtube. Hope to see more!

@@EleniyamaYoga I own a 105mm Sigma 1:1 macro and a 70-300mm Tamron lens which both fit on the mount converter (Z to F) that comes with the camera as I had an old D3300, works really well though occasionally if using automatic focusing it can d/c sometimes but it's pretty rare. Other than that and the really nice kit lens I don't have any others

@@baardiel9120 great thank you for the reply! I also have a D5300 and am indecisive whether to get Z50+FTZ to use with my wide angle Nikon 10-20mm DX or to get a Z6 plus a cheaper wide-angle or maybe 24mm FX prime lens. I should mention for short distance videos (and stills like landscapes)

@@Isaypreach I see. I got my Sony A7RII for 850 euro / 1000 dollar, I'm confused what to do. The Z6 seems nice but I expect Nikon to do better on the Z6s. The Sony colors aren't optimal and the 42mp is a little too much for me. Maybe I should just stick with Sony for a while and change back to Nikon later.

@@luca_rr4660 its funny that u should say that about sony colors. A guy i know did a review about 4 different cameras and who they where for and though the sony a6000 or 64000 I think. Has 24 mega pixels, and the z50 has 20. I liked the colors on the nikon better. From the comparison photos he showed between the 4.

Can I use the z50 as a second camera to accompany Z6 for weddings or should I just buy another Z6.

My moto is always buy the best you can afford. If the best you can afford is a Z50 then you’ll be fine. I’ve shot several weddings with the Nikon D500 and the Z50 uses the same sensor so it will work just fine. Long as you have the right lenses to get the job done.

after watching video portraits, i fully understand what the mean of better DOF with ff and crop, and bokeh. Clearly look at z6, i can feel like more depth, feeling more 3d.

Wow did you remember to turn IBIS off if you where on a tripod? Otherwise the ibis will eff up the sharpness on the Z6. The 35mm should not be blurry like that. I don’t have the 24 but do have the 20/35/50/85mm S lenses.

Yep, can see the IBIS symbol on the Z6 back screen in the end. That’s why the Z6 shots where a bit blurry. I forget it myself time to time to turn IBIS off when on a tripod. It would be a really good feature if the camera itself could sense that it is on a tripod and turn off the stabilisation.

I think the z6 has a low pass filter that may affect the sharpness as well because i know the z50 doesn't have one
