The thing about N-RAW-if you use the Davinci Resolve Color Managed workflow-is the fixability of basic settings such as the white balance and probably more important tint during post. If you have time to do a color card check and/or have a really good eye for such things on the fly (and always remember to adjust your white point during every change of setting and gradually through out the day), then baked in formats are a bit quicker. But the faster you have to work in a given video situation, the more valuable it is to have the flexibility of a compressed RAW format such as N-RAW or BRAW. ProResRAW??? That’s a different kettle of fish because the file sizes and bit rates balloon tremendously, but now that 1TB CFExpress cards are less money than 512GB SD cards, storage isn’t as much the issue any longer.

Hugh, first of all your shot of the Hasidic gentlemen is OUTSTANDING! And a little envy here, since I have wanted to create a thoughtful and meaningful collection of the cultural norms of the Hasidic groups across the country, but can never get close enough to start. Secondly, I want to mention that you are my "go to" for reporting on camera gear. You've never failed me and this preview bears no exception. I will not pre order until you've had a chance for a thorough review. My Fujifilm X-H2S will continue running my event shooting for now. The Zf is my back up (I could actually reverse that) though the muscle memory is at times, daunting. Lastly, thank you for mentioning the depth of field preview issue on the Zf. I had NO idea this was a real issue and thought it was just me! I do a lot of low light shooting sometimes and it was maddening. Thanks! Keep on keeping on... I love your videos!

Hey there, i just traded my Zf in for the Z6iii for the better ergonomics. But… though i am not a big video guy, i just need an all a rounder camera for wildlife (flying, running, and stills) and for landscape. I am not a professional, but i like good quality images so i can print and post on social media. Will this Z6iii (even though so many people say DR is bad) would it be good for a wildlife, nature, landscape camera? I don’t have a big budget, just want a camera that is great for what i do.

Panasonic FanBoy / User here. I think that the Z6 III having internal N-RAW is a good thing... even for low-budget run-and-gun video shooters. Yes, it means that you HAVE to do some basic color grading. But if you are a run-and-gun shooter, you usually have little to no control of lighting. So shooting in RAW gives you the flexibility to deal with tricky mixed lighting situations, or if you accidentally used the wrong white balance if you were in a rush (not that that has ever happened to me... cough... cough). I mean, it is kind of like shooting stills in jpgs vs in RAW. You can certainly get great jpg photos straight out of camera, but in tricky situations, RAW can be a life saver. Now just a brain dump: I might switch from Panasonic (S1 and S5 Original) to the Z6 III. Aside from the aforementioned N-RAW (which is great for us DaVinci Resolve users), the 4K 60p in full frame appeals to me, as does the faster readout / less rolling shutter. Hopefully the various picture profiles of the Z6 III has less noise reduction / oversharpened edge details that palgue the S5 II. The other things I would really like to know about are things like the image quality of the 1080p footage at 120fps, howwell the AF works at those higher frame rates, hdmi lag (the Panasonic S-series cameras have pretty bad HDMI lag, which makes manual focusing more of a chore), does it have waveforms / false color? Or just those crazy zebra levels from previous Z cameras? I wonder if it has )or will have) the ability to record to an SSD, or using the USB-C port, have the ability to record timecode in (I know that Sony's a7 III got that ability throughthe multifunction port if one purchases a specific Sony-made cable).

"Don't listen to idiots" as my mother used to warn me 60 years ago. Still valid today, especially today. I am not one to switch brands or models very often, as witnessed by my main two cameras are a Z6 original and D850 and use the original Z6 for 90% of my paid work but 18 F mount top grade lenses on either are not as the results from the 7 Z mount lenses. Ignoring video for the point, clients are very happy with the results with the Z6 and 85 1.2 or even 1.8 plus the advantage of having a superb stylist and MUA I do videos also but more of video intros in actor portfolios. that turn out well but a few hours ago there was a youtube video using the Z6 lll that even with the limitations of KZbin and my laptop, the color and impact of scenes in a forest jumps out from screen as the best looking sequence I have ever seen on this laptop let alone the KZbin smashing bandwidth. If the video intros by actor clients could look 1/2 as good if I got the Z6 lll, I am in. This prerelease has probable breaking records for pre-orders. I think the largest backlog as for the very solid D800, which I was lucky and got one in short 4 day window when the big retailers like B&H were quoting 6-8 months. I was back in my native USA for only 4 days and not likely to be back in 3-4 years and got one. I still have it and it is still a good portrait camera.

I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. I blew my wad on the Zf so I can’t go Z6III. So honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z6ii, or even the Z5! But with the recent price drops, the Z6ii is not much more and is appealing also. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z6ii (or Z5), LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup, with similar menus and access to the lenses. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session. No events, sports or wildlife. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 and a Z6ii in the camera store recently and they both felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both really nice. Would you recommend the Z5 or Z6ii as a backup to my Zf? If I get the Z5 I can afford more glass, but maybe the better body is a wiser choice? Thoughts?
@renestaempfli10716 ай бұрын
It looks like the partial stacked sensor has the added circuit layer to speed up video, but lacking it for stills. This shows in the slow electronic flash sync speed at 1/60 which gives you a readout speed of approx. 16ms @ 24Mpx for stills.

Do though hope they will consider creating a smaller body like my A7CR and A7CII from Sony. You make it clear that this is a video camera first, stills camera second. Why is no one, with the exception of unaffordable cameras from Leica and Hasselblad, making cameras focused on stills shooters? I recently sold my GFX gear, too big and heavy now at my age, and am shooting with a Fuji X-T5, which is good but quite a step backwards in image quality from the GFX. I'm considering switching brands but to what? I tried a Sony A7R V and found it unpleasant to use, a computer to which one can attach lenses. I was hoping that the Z6III would be the one, but it's clearly not. Will the Z7III be better or will it too be a video camera first, with photography a distant afterthought? The Japanese manufacturers all seem to think that every one wants to shoot professional quality video, when some of us don't shoot video at all!

100% agree with your comments about raw and high iso. For most of us a high data codex like internal prores HQ is way more than we could hope for or actually need. If you can white balance and expose correctly you dont need raw for 99.999% of anything. High iso performance is more for tech sheet warriors, and pixel peepers, there's not enough difference between todays high end FF cameras to bother anyone who actually shoots stuff. Its great to see Nikon bouncing back with another worthy camera that can compete with the best out there. The Z9, Z8 and now the Z6iii show how Nikon has learnt and listened to what the customers want.

A trade in and taking loss on 4 month old ZF + 24-70 f/4 kit (added the 28-75 2.8 Z anyway) for Z6iii is tempting. AFS 24-70 2.8 G adapted on Zf is very awkward, amongst some F mount zooms. Gain joystick , top display, keep a flippy screen, get a batter sensor and just lose the bw switch on top.

Apparently, Sony made a special deal with Nikon to create the semi stacked sensor, and so that massive company is making out just fine, regardless. The Z6III is a great value, as was the Z8 before it. I would be shocked if it is not Nikon’s most popular Full Frame camera. However, I am not a hybrid shooter, nor do I need sprinter fast autofocus, so both cameras have a lot of tech which I will never use. I love my Z7II for landscapes, paired with the Nikkor f4 zooms and the 100-400 Z zoom. I bought a Zf six months ago, and I absolutely love it paired with small primes of all sorts, MF and AF. Its autofocus is plenty fast enough. Plus, the thing looks beautiful too! I bought both Z6iii and Z8 and I must say Z8 is worth the price difference! It’s a hefty camera that instills confidence in me capturing what needs to be captured! I don’t get the same feeling with Z6iii. The AF feels better and the electronic shutter is much appreciated by me personally! I shoot handheld 3 image brackets with 2 or 3 stops Ev between the shots. Electronic shutter introduces zero shake and I get almost 100% success rate in alignment with shutter speeds as low as 1/15 sec on bright exposures! It eliminates the need for a tripod in real estate photography! The controls on Z8 make changing settings a breeze and I don’t visit the menus while on Z6iii I end up going into menus more than I should. So, in terms of user experience and the beautiful 45MP photos you get, it’s just the camera I rather pick up with confidence! As Omar Gonzales said in his comparison, Z6iii is tool to do professional work and you won’t have any feelings about it! Z8 on the other hand takes me back to the feeling I had holding D700 back in the day! Filled with confidence that this beat of a camera will handle anything life throws at it! ❤💪

Meaning, it's far more accessible than portrayed in this video. CFexpress B cards are also getting cheaper. I bought an Angelbird 1TB for $200, very recently.

Hello Claudia and Hugh! The is obviously a very video-centric camera, and I don’t shoot any video. For a passionate amateur photographer, would you recommend a Z7II, or the new Z6iii. I would love the Z8, but it is far too much camera for my needs, and too expensive.
@3BMEP6 ай бұрын
Hey, Broch! If you don’t need the resolution, autofocus for stills alone may be reason enough to go Z6 III. But Claudia loved her Z7 II as you may recall. Although she has since migrated to a Sony a7C R for much of what she does, a Leica SL3 for the rest!

I own both the Nikon Z system and the Fuji X system. I shoot a lot in the dark theaters and I prefer the 24 megapixel full frame sensors. The Z6II was a very good camera (for stills) but it wasn't quite there yet for my needs. The Z6III looks very promising and a big improvement over the Z6II, but I still need a quiet mechanical shutter like the Fuji cameras do. My Z9 is way more than I need and its 45 megapixel shows noise at iso 3200, whereas my Z6II was clean at iso 6400. The electronic shutter on the Z9 with the stacked sensor works quite well in the theater, except for some annoying banding issues (another plus for the Fuji). This main issue for me is the mechanical shutter of the Z6III quiet enough not to disturb the audience in the theaters. The Z6III is beautiful camera at a reasonable price. The Z6III would be a no-brainer for me except for the shutter noise issue.

Hi Hugh. The Z6 III sounds like a great camera. Many people will be very happy with it. At the end you talk briefly about what I call the 'fetish for specs'. Modern cameras are generally really terrific even if they don't have the latest 'killer' properties. For example I took my Fuji XE4 to Stourgate a National Trust property in the UK. I didn't have any lights. There is a grotto there with classical statues, pretty much in the dark. I shot some pictures at ISO 12800. The EVF and screen were blank. In Light Room I moved a few sliders and got a terribly pixelated image. Then I used Adobe Noise Reduction. I got a very useable image that needed a few minutes to remove remaining artefacts. I know this is a bit off topic regarding the Z6 III. The point I am making is about the pursuit of technological progress by manufacturers, which whilst great for the company bottom line and for photographers, does in some way(s) diverts attention from the tools we already have. Great episode as always.

Alas, it's great that the Z6III has finally addressed the autofocus issues. I was an early adopter (and defender) of the Z6, which I thought was a great camera in many respects. Nevertheless, I eventually gave up because the autofocus was unreliable. I sold all my Nikon gear and moved to Sony, at an expected loss. While I love the results from Sony, the Nikon was a much more enjoyable camera to use. As wonderful as the Z6III may be, I just can't afford to make another move back to Nikon.

You talk about the video advantages of this camera but nothing is shown to back that up. Second this video is in BLACK & WHITE from the beginning till the end. And that cuts its convincing ability by half. I need to see most of the photos in color to compare them to those taken by other camera brands.

I have just sold my Z7ii, but I still own the ZF. I have been waiting for the Z7iii for nearly 4 years. However the release of this Z6iii tells me that the body is bigger and heavier. The lack small stubby primes, even after 18 months since the release of the ZF. The inabilty to assign minimum shutter speed to a button which has become a severe irritation when in apature priority. With no guarantees there will ever be a high resolution Z7iii if it comes to fruition, it will be in the same body as this new Z6iii. Heavier body. With an incresingly bad back, I want a lighter camera body. I also now shoot mainly primes Nikon 28mm and 40mm. These lenses are plastic mounts, so poor. I don't shoot video, just landscape photography. I am going to move to Sony. With such a choice of G and G master primes and zoom lenses. The A7RC and A7RV with be my cameras of choice going forward. I would agree the Nikon F1.8 primes are good, but they are heavy and rather large. My other big irritation with the Z7ii is you can shoot in a crop mode, but you do not get the full sensor read out in post. Shoot in square, that is what you get, no changing your mind. Even my old Fuji XT2 didn't do that. I beleive this has been solved in the Z8. So why can the firmware not apply this to other bodies. Surley this is not lack of processing power. The 24mm F1.2 GM, 40mm F2.5 G, Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN I prime lenses. For very inclement days in the UK, 16-25mm F2.8 G, 24-50mm F2.8 G and 20-70mm F4 G lenses. Nikon have nothing to match this in their line up. To conclude Nikon have now told me it is time to jump ship. Sad as I have a lovley collection of images on my walls as prints, but I need a lighter set up. Thank you Hugh for your thoughts, interested to see your full review.

Finally, Nikon fills a market segment where previous models were not competitive against the competition. But is it too late? In recent years, many photographers and photo enthusiasts have chosen to abandon the brand in favor of Sony, Canon, and Fuji. It's evident that since the production of mirrorless cameras began, Nikon has fallen behind. The new Nikon Z6 III seems to be an excellent camera on paper. Personally, I've always used Nikon, with their extraordinary DSLRs. I've also worked with the Nikon Z6 II professionally, but I found it unreliable for eye detection autofocus, etc. Consequently, I switched to Sony and, staying in the same segment, I find the Sony 7 IV exceptional. Moreover, Sony's lens lineup is very extensive. Despite Nikon's high-quality build, viewfinder, and display, I won't go back. I think too much importance is given to technology. Personally, what I look for in a professional camera is reliable autofocus, quality, and feel. With Sony, for years, I've been able to get what I had with Nikon DSLRs. I still hope that Nikon achieves the success it deserves with this new camera, but I think the competition is very fierce and that it's difficult for those who have switched to other brands to decide to go back, especially for economic reasons.

And here's me, happily shooting almost all my commercial wildlife work on a pair of D500's and a D5. On my off time, my medium format and large format analog cameras are my best friends. Soon people will no longer have to think because the new cameras do everything for them. Exposure? What gives, hit whatever setting and correct in post. Wait for good light? Nah, just hit HDR and apply filters in post. Any need to determine where to focus? Nope, the algorithms will do that for you too. Ask some of the up and coming "pros" some very basic questions about actual photography and they haven't got a clue. Yes, some create stunning images, but one could venture a guess at how much of it is photography and how much of it is "digital art" or post processing. I've played with the Z6iii and while it's incredible to see what a camera can do these days, I do not care about video and in terms of stills, it does not do anything for me that my aging slr's can't do well enough. Now consider this, the Leica SL2 and SL2-s are now on sale in various shops, which, in Europe, means you can snag either one for less than a Z6iii. Perhaps it's just me, but the Nikon feels like a cheap toy in comparison. And sure, it may create "superior" images for many, particularly those who rely on everything auto and HDR, but nah, I reckon that most of the tech inside is surplus to requirements for almost anyone. Although of course we all need to get ridiculous frame rates to rattle off 50 shots of every scene (where in reality, the Nikon F5 and F6 with grip, already offered the speed anyone but perhaps F1 or areal acrobatics photographers would ever need). End of rant.

A7V I expect will step out ahead again, continuing the pattern of better DR, high iso and low light performance, better AF. I would like to go with Nikon and appreciate their color science and rate of progress recently partly with video in the Z6iii. But the Sony A7iv is several years old now and a new version is expected soon, as is the Canon R6iii. Nikon I prefer as a brand, though corporate alliance is fairly silly at this point. I don’t appreciate Canon’s lens approach, that is a meaningful reason to avoid or even ‘resent’ that brand. But the technology leap frogging will continue and Nikon’s win at this price point will be short term. I’m betting on the near term next gen Sony as the better long term investment, especially with E mount lens options.

Alternatively, one might expect relatively minor updates in the core technology because the rate of improvement has slowed over the past few years. Tough call.
