The Nikon Z6 III is an incredible camera for so many different reasons, but has gotten a lot of hate for its dynamic range performance. Today I will be talking about its dynamic range performance and a hot take I have about the Z6 III. So feel free to watch the video and let me know what you think! Thank you for experiencing the world with me.

dynamic range isn’t the only aspect of how a sensor performs in image quality. There is a reason why we all desided bsi/stack, despite having impact on dynamic range, is still remarkably better than fsi sensor. z6iii is just half a stop worse in dynamic range than zf/z6ii at low iso. It is not gonna be noticeable to 99.9% of human being.

If you’re only going by the photons to photos site data, the Z5 sensor has more dynamic range at ISO 100 than any Z6, Z7, or Z8 sensors, though the Z7/Z7ii are the best overall at their base ISO 64. The Z6iii is worst than all of them, and comparable to a Z50, until around ISO 800. Above ISO 800, the Z6iii performs similar to previous Z6 models, though still slightly less. Personally, if my main focus was landscape, I’d take a Z7ii.

Absolutely. For landscape you almost all the time use ISO < 800. In fact if you aren't into landscape, you should by ok.

@@gromit576Even if landscape is part of what you do, the Z6 III is still a good camera. DR-wise it performs like an APS-C camera, and I’ve used a Pentax K-3 a lot for landscapes without any reservation. If you want a true landscape monster, that’s not the Z6 III. Maybe get a Z7 II, or go medium format.

Z8. Still 14.2 DR at 64 ISO, at can use pixel shift up to 180 MP photos. It's the best landscape camera right now.

Z5 indeed has better dynamic range than the Z6. I have tested the results side by side. I can't confirm the results with the others due to my limited time with the Z8 and Z7II

Saturday, I photographed an orchard at sunset on a Z6iii. They are beautiful images; one of which I printed at A3+ (13 x 19”) on a Canon Pro 1000. They are easily as good as those I have taken on my Z6, Z7, and Z8. Though I believe the analysis of the Z6iii’s dynamic range (DR), it is just one in a variety of parameters that determine how good a camera is. The Z6iii is VERY good at pretty much EVERYTHING. That is what I wanted; an excellent “All Arounder”. I will gladly make whatever changes are necessary to get the shot in the limited situations where the DR challenge might be an issue.

I have a Z 5 and I'm waiting to eventually buy the Z 6 III. I think dynamic range isn't going to matter in most of the situations but I'll keep my Z 5 and use both in different ways. Your review had some information I haven't found in other reviews yet, so thank you!

The Z5 and the 28mm Z is a 🔥 hiking combo it's bacially weightless. I skipped the Z6iii and got a Z8 to compliment my Z5. The flippy screen is cool until you realize in daylight at 15ft away your not gonna be able to see crap anyways 😅 I'm aet on camera bodies for the next 10 yrs at least

I’m a Sony shooter and I agree with you. If the A75 came out with a partially stacked sensor, shot raw internally but sacrificed some of the DR, it would be in the running for camera of the year lol. Especially at that price point.

It's just another compromise like anything else. Less rolling shutter for video due to the partially stacked sensor translates to a lower dynamic range. That's why I kept my Z7II when I bought my Z9. The AF on moving wildlife in the Z7II left a lot to be desired and the Z9 addressed that. If I want to shoot landscape though, I am definitely taking my Z7II if I know I will have a lot of contrasting shots that require shadow recovery. Simple, the right tool for the right job. But sensationalism is the main thing here. If someone is so unhappy with the dynamic range and wants an improved AF system, they can always buy a Z f and add a grip to make it more ergonomic. With its feature set, the Z6III is obviously focused on videographers and fast action photographers. Again, the right tool for the right job, so there are options.

I'm not worried about dynamic range because I have a z8 for landscape. But if I'm in a high dynamic range scene I'm going to bracket my shots and blend the exposures anyway. I want the same focus tracking my z8 has. And I want to be able to shoot in burst mode without screen blackout like u have on my z6 II. I know there's a slight blackout with the mechanical shutter on the z6 III but that's probably from the shutter opening and closing. I'm more concerned with how it displays in the EVF when you're shooting in burst mode. Right now is a toss up between the z6 III and the zf. I've gotten into street photography so that body draws to me. It'll be next year before I make a decision if I even make one.

A very fair comparison between the Z6iii and the Z6. Having recently made the move myself, I have to agree with almost everything you say. The new Z6 is an absolute joy to use even if one can get a bit lost between all the new options at hand now. Somehow I like the simplicity of a Leica menu. But what matters in the end are the results.

Before I got my D750, I used a D7100, and before that a Pentax K-3, which was also APS-C. For travel, landscapes, etc. Aside from the D7100’s noise banding, I’ve never felt that it wasn’t good enough for pulling shadows. And the K-3 was great. And the Z6 III outperforms that camera even at ISO 100. Less noise is always better of course, but based on my usages so far, I would be happy to use the Z6 III for all kinds of photography including landscape work.

Is the dynamic range better on this than the D750? The way I shoot portraits of big groups and i have to bring in the shadows sometimes from backlit images and the d750 does a great job on this.

The DR is not a problem for My use case so I am happy and do not care about the bashing that is going on (sad that they have nothing better to do) (maybe it would be better to only have one camera manufacturer, They could charge huge prices, and then nothing would change ???????) Leave Nikon alone stop being a bully !!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

I picked up a used Z7ii last year and the value is only better now. If you're shooting fast action or need high-end video specs it's not the camera for you, but it's got great dynamic range, high MP count, and a more compact body than the Z8 or Z9. I hope they bring out a Z7iii in the next 9 months or so.

Does anyone complaining about Z6iii dynamic range even realise, that it has almost the SAME dynamic range as Z8 at ISO 100? 10,44 for Z6iii and 10,64 for Z8. I don't know about you, but when I shoot landscape, I don't go below ISO 100 very often. Oh and also, it has slightly better dynamic range above ISO 800 than Z8 or even Z7ii.

This video is confusing. Everyday Nikon Z6 series was never meant to be first choice for landscape photography, it was Z7/D850 series (now also Z8) with more megapixels and native ISO 64. Z6 III borrows speed and video from bigger brothers, sacrificing little bit of image quality in 100-800 ISO range. In higher ISO scenarios relevant for speed and video, dynamic range is comparable or the same. Nikon Z7 II or Z8 would be much better landscape cameras.

I think it's fair to criticise a FF camera for having the same dynamic range of an apsc camera. Specially a 3000 euro camera. Sure, we can work with it, but the point of technology is to move forward, not backwards.

I don’t care about “hate” or “love” about a camera, or a camera name (like z6iii). I was simply waiting for a new 24 mpx camera with a good autofocus (z6iii is ok), a good dynamic range for wedding (z6iii is not a good option for a white dress under the sun), a good performance in low light (and the z6iii fails again). So maybe I will stay with my d750 ad z6i. Sorry, but this camera is non sense for me. “Half stacked” sensor is non sense. The result is this hybrid camera that’s a sort of experiment for this temporary sensor, but is not really good in photo ad in video. That’s just Nikon nonsense. IMHO

Oh wow, the Z6III suffering from the usual nikon bashing ? who could have seen that coming ? ^^ Sure it's sad to have a lower DR on a newer camera but if you aren't pixel peeping it's still ok and all theses upgrades compared to the Z6II or even most other brand at that price point are pretty impressive. I don't think i'd take it though, 3000€ in france for the Z6III is pretty high for my uses cases, my old Z6 is plenty enough for now but maybe if in like one or two years i can have it for like 2000/2200€ maybe i'll jump on it ^^
