I own a A1 and i wish did have the features of the newest cameras but i brought a complete camera and the update that gave it adjustable raw sizes and 8k 4:2:2 was cool for me. Hey everyone! So lets keep in mind that I get paid by neither company. Also that we have done these comparisons for years and structure them based on categories which for simplicity sake does only leave room for a winner and a loser. Not exactly a perfect system but its accessible in a video format. Also my preferences are going to influence the decision in some ways. That's just the nature of reviews by humans. If you do stick around to the conclusion or read my article on Petapixel, you will find that although the Sony wins in most categories it's the Nikon Z8 which we chose as by far the more versatile camera and probably the camera most photographers should look at. Also many of the comments are accurate in so far as these two cameras do not really compete in the same fields necessarily. However, they are the same price and prospective buyers will take a hard look at both, hopefully our video helps inform that decision. Beyond that it's just going to be which of you already have Sony and will most likely keep supporting them, and vice versa for Nikon users. If anything I'm one of the few who gets to use all the cameras, and yet owns NONE of them. I have no dog in the fight, nor need to prop any brand over any other. The only system I would claim to own and use regularly is OM System. So how about both these cameras suck and you should all get an OM-1! :)

I am in the process of switching from Sony (A7R3) to the Nikon Z8 (still waiting for delivery). For me (and everyone will be different), there was no single area in which the Z8 was Earth-shatteringly better, but there were so many areas in which it suited my needs a little better that it was worth it to me to switch. For astro photography, the ability for the auto-focus to lock on to a single bright star and the ability to make the displays red (to protect my night vision) will be welcomed. For Birds in Flight and Aviation photography, the 20 FPS and the auto-detect AF will be nice. For Landscapes, the capability to do focus stacking in camera will be useful. Also, for me, then lens selection, while definitely not as extensive as the Sony lens line-up meets my needs perfectly. I see getting a "Holy Trinity" of the 14-30 f/4 S, the 24-120 f/4 S and either the 100-400 S or the 180-600 lens with the 20mm f/1.8 for astro and the Voightlander 15mm f/4.5 for wide angle Landscapes when I want a well defined sunstar. The USB-C PD port allows for 8K60P RAW video shooting WHILE charging the battery. Over a 12 hour shooting day I did not once have to turn off my Z8, change its battery, or experience a hot camera or hot card warning. In real world use its incredible. I appreciate Nikon holding onto the EN-EL15 battery for OVER A DECADE, and the PD port helps alleviate an aging battery design issue. Something about the Z8's noise pattern is very reminiscent of high ISO film grain. I shot an indoor event in a dimly lit lobby and needed to stop down to get a huge group in focus. The auto ISO cranked up to 15,000 and the shot still looked beautiful with natural looking grain and retained highlight and shadow rolloff. Base ISO 64 on the Z8 stacked sensor really helps for portraits and landscapes vs iso 100 of a BSI sensor. Versus my Z6 I find that the Z8 is better from 64-500, Z6 is better from 800-3200, Z8 takes it back from 4000-25000. It really does matter where the dual native ISO's kick in. One of the best features of the Nikon 'second-tier' full-frame cameras is that the jpeg image embedded in the raw file is full resolution. I take it for granted so much that I'm confused when I use raw images from another camera with small embedded jpegs. This lets me photograph in only raw, extract the embedded jpeg files, and deliver those. It also works because the images meet most people's needs straight out of the camera. If a particular image and use case would benefit from additional processing, the raw file is still at hand.

"Better" ergonomics and menus? That's subjective, so you can't fault others for choosing different than you. You are also cherry picking, since clearly the two cameras are for different niche. A7R series was always for prioritizing resolution and image quality over other features that it can perform but its not a priority. If you shoot studio portraits, product photography, landscapes, architecture, archival work. high end fashion and beauty work etc. Its a perfect camera for that because it was designed for that. I don't know why Z8 was used for comparison since its not two cameras meant to do same things. Each camera was designed with different purpose and approach to photography. In terms of brands its also a strange comparison since Sony offers wide range of photo and video gear for all kinds of users and share same lens mount. Nikon yet does not do that. There is no equivalent of cinema line cameras for Nikon, while Sony uses them with the same e-mount. etc. So its really a strange comparison. There is no lack of options on the market, but one needs to be clear about what one wants to shoot and how. As for Chris and Jordan, they are entertainers on youtube. They don't really buy the gear they "review", they don't really do proper testing, they are primerally entertainers on youtube. Generic script, generic shooting check list, few jokes, keep it short and entertaining, see you next week. Done. It can do more but you still may want a smaller camera with longer battery, free-Angle tilting screen, higher res EVF, higher resolution with bigger lens selection. Thats basically why Chris still picked the A7RV. Like anything in life pick the correct tool for the job. A7RV with a pancake 24mm GM lens is only .35 lb heavier than a Leica Q3(both 61 mp). I mean the Z8 is more of an A1 competitor since it is an A9 without grip. I have both A1 and A7RV, but have used CaNikon for over 30 years. For me (read «for me» all fanboys), the Sony ergonomics are one of the reasons I chose the Sony A7RV over the other Z8 and R5. The Sony A7RV, for example, has 5 control wheels. A separate wheel for EV comp that can be locked, you can actually also change this to be a wheel for ISO when, for example, you use manual mode. A wheel for shutter and a wheel for aperture. There is also a large multi wheel that covers several functions in addition to ISO. Most newer Sony lenses also have a lovely aperture wheel on the lenses which gives a lovely feeling back to when I started photography. For example, on the Nikon you have to press a button to change the function from the shutter/aperture wheel to EV comp if you want to use it. Nikon and Canon lack function wheels according to my personal user process. I also find the placement of the shutter release button and front dial on the Canon to be reversed from what I like on the Sony. The AF-ON button on the Sony is higher/deeper and larger than on the Nikon and Canon, and gives me a better feel during use. The PAD button, where you can, for example, change the focus point location etc. is larger and deeper, as well as much more robust and gnarly on the Sony than on the Nikon and Canon. It gives me a better feel and easier to operate. All the function buttons also seem a bit larger and deeper on the Sony than on the Nikon and Canon, more angular and not so round, which makes the feeling more secure in my experience. There are also more buttons and more options to personalize them on the Sony than any other camera I've tested. For video hybrid shooters, Sony also has a separate wheel that changes the entire camera setup with wheels, buttons and menus, from still image setup to video movie setup, where also all the C1-C2-C3 setups can be completely different between still image and video. This also applies if you turn the wheel to S&Q mode. You can have 12 completely different camera setups just by turning a separate wheel. I like to use the viewfinder, then I shut out the rest of the world, and the camera must be easy to operate with the eye of the viewfinder. I also think that the viewfinder on the A7RV and A1 is second to none. It's beautiful when you want to shut out the world, and not least when you want to examine the picture you've taken. So many details, so light and so big. The flexible LCD screen is also without parallel, there is not a single angle it cannot be placed in. Here Sony is much better than Nikon and Canon in my opinion. I also like to take as little as possible with me on my mountain trips, Sony gives me the most quality and ergonomics in relation to size than any other camera setup. I'm also a big fan of the aesthetic form factor of the Sony. The more angular, retro-like shape of the 70s-80s Sony is, to me, much more appealing and nostalgic than the 1990s-2000s DSLR-like shape that CaNikon has stuck to. So… there is much more to the ergonomics of a camera than just a large grip. The grip on the Sony A7RV is perfectly fine for my normal Norwegian hands, and I can use the camera perfectly in the cold with gloves on. I also use L-bracket on all my cameras, so my little finger will also rest perfectly around the grip. Thus, everything else I have described plays a much bigger role for me than a large DSLR grip. Ergonomics and user satisfaction are so much more than a big grip.

Asymmetrical slots are very annoying. Anyone who says CFE-B cards don't fail, I wish you luck, because ETTF isn't dominated by how hard the card physically is. Internal solid state memory would fail like a SSD. Matt Irwin compared the Nikon 45.7 megapixel sensor versus the Sony 60 megapixel sensor and the Sony started getting softer focus at about f/8 due to diffraction. He concluded that 45 megapixels was just about the sweet spot for today's lenses and anything more than that will cause sharpness to deteriorate at anything higher than f/5.6. There is a reason those 100 megapixel cameras require different lenses.
@KrunoslavStifter Жыл бұрын
This is only partly true. Sharp enough lenses are meant to be used with 60 MP and they can resolve the details even after what was mentioned. Furthermore with the aid of lens correction software done right, these are not really limitations anymore. If you want ultimate picture quality out of these cameras, currently DXO PhotoLab is best option. They compensate for the lens softness and using neural networks they can clean up the photos and bring out the fine details in ways that the previous limitations such as diffraction at f/8 is not an issue. Proper Software + lenses can compensate for problem of higher MP and there is really no problem shooting 60 MP at f/10 or higher. Did he use those methods in his tests?

@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas "Something Sony still doesn't understand with it's heavy focus breahting lenses." Actually its more likley you don't understand the choices they made and why. The focus breathing lenses are far smaller and require less glass, hence less weight and cost less to make. You need to compensate for focus breathing peripherally in certain style of video making and Sony approach to that was focus breathing compensation. Which works quite well. By clever utilization of software compensation for focus breathing they provide smaller, cheaper to make, lighter lenses that can still provide superb image quality. Like some of the GM lenses. Sharp, light, fast. Only downside really is focus breathing in video that can be solved by software. This is not lack of understanding of Sony engineers , its a deliberate prioritization at the minimum compromise.

For still shooters you get 30, 60, 120 FPS for action shots or you can pull a photo from a 8K video stream with the 45 Mpix sensor. A7RV has bad rolling shutter and low FPS for stills. But that's just speculation right now. If I'm not mistaken the Sony system does not give you image stabilization in both the lenses and camera. I think their IBIS only works if the lens doesn't have stabilization or if it's turned off. Nikon gives you both. Sony also has an issue with focus breathing with a lot of their lenses. You get a pulsing in video. The Nikon Z lenses have little to no focus breathing or chromatic aberration. And because the phlange distance is so narrow on the z bodies you can adapt E mount lenses. I don't think the third party E mount work that well though. Nikon's menus are some of the easiest to use. Sony's isn't. At the end of the day it comes down to compromises. Every brand has theirs. You just have to decide what you need and what you can live without. Every brand is great at something. They all make good cameras these days. I don't think anyone is making a bad sensor. His review is actually spot on. I have both bodies and everything he stated is spot on. Knowing that Sony makes Nikon's sensors: comparing image quality is pointless. At the end of the day is about priorities and your style of shooting. I do prefer Nikon because of the controls and ergonomics, it's just easier to rapidly change settings while framing the shoot. But when mobility and weight is an issue, Sony is more suitable. Comparing the EVF and giving Sony the win is BS. It's a tiny screen and there's no way you will notice the difference. I think Nikon knew that and decided to stick with a lower res EVF in favor of lag-free fast response display which is brilliant. Operation wise, the Nikon is just faster and snappier. I also hate Sony's file system. One more important thing, probably the most important: glass quality. Many Sony lenses including the 24-70 GM 1&2 suffer from CA. I have yet to see a high-end Z lense suffering from CA. So overall, the Nikon wins as a practical photography solution. Designed for productivity and capturing images with fun and passion. My point is, if cameras from 10 years ago were amazing, any camera today surpasses the technical aspects, and it doesn't matter too much which camera you get, as long as it suits your needs. At this point, it's entirely up to the photographer to get the shot. If you aren't getting the shot, you probably just need to refine your technique.

I have been using Sony APS-C for several years, always wondering about FF. One big advantage of the A7RV is that the 60MP sensor can be used in APS-C mode, providing 28MP images. This allows me to continue to make good use of the six APS-C lenses I have, a lens selection I've carefully formed to suit my needs. A collection for which I spent $4,000. Were I to buy an A7RV I could simply shift from my Sony a6600 body to the A7RV body, with the resulting improvements in Auto Focus, dual card slots, BSI sensor, improved IBIS, faster mechanical shutter, improved white balance, better color science, and better EVS, all without spending a dime on lenses. Then I can carefully add FF lenses where I think they will do the most good. It is interesting to watch the comparison reviews of the A7RV and Z8 (and R5) but switching away from Sony isn't in my plan. Well done video review as always.

I don’t know if it’s because you’ve been with Petapixel recently, but in my opinion, you are very biased towards Sony. Since when the fact that you have smaller hands decides on which is a better design on the camera? I work for a camera store and we have so many Sony camera coming back because they have defect versus any Nikon any time and we sell like tons more Nikon. I think you just like Sony better now which is fine, but don’t give us that BS of a comparison. The only way I will agree with you is for the lenses that have more choices for Sony. There is more resolution in the Sony, but as you said, does anybody really need this ?

FYI - For all those moaning in the comments about why they didn't compare this to the A1 as if this is some kind of 'Alex Jones type grand conspiracy against Nikon' please just go watch the other thousand videos out there on the Z9 and the A1. The Z8 is almost the same to the Z9 so if your smart enough you can figure out the differences. Yes they compared 2 cameras of similar price that are not the flagship models. Get over it.
@RiposteThis Жыл бұрын
Of course Sony wins, they win because they have the best ecosystem, plus if you're an EVF user, there is nothing better than the A7RV. Nikon is still catching up with both great lens selection and f1.4 / f1.2 glass, and their AF isn't as good. Nikon will always be 3rd in the mirrorless world with Canon and Sony fighting for first. But either way you look at it, consumers are winning with an amazing camera from each of the big 3.

I tried both a Z9 and a a7r4 for sports. Both are perfectly capable. I was also shooting with the Sony 100-400 on the Sony and an f to z adapted 200-500 on the Nikon. One big takeaway on the Sony was the smaller grip especially when holding the 100-400 which also zooms on the closest ring causing me to hold the lens closer to the body. I felt like I had less stability holding the camera applying a lot of pressure to my middle finger against the grip holding the camera up. After a full day this was quite uncomfortable. I k I’m not quite a fair comparison against my huge grip Z9 but even when shooting my Nikon D800, it was much more comfortable holding the bigger camera. Having said that, I did appreciate the lightweight of the Sony compared to my heavier Z9.
@HappyHubris Жыл бұрын
Battery and dummy grips exist for Sony cameras, you know. I use a Sony camera with a hollow grip for my larger hands and it's the best of both worlds: lightweight and capable for big hands.
@scotthayesproductions5715 Жыл бұрын
you're not incorrect on the grip. I have been shooting Sony since 2015, and that pressure on my right middle finger from the smaller body has caused arthritis. I was shooting weddings, and lots of handheld gigs, and at the end of the day, lots of pain in my hands. So, it does make a difference. I get cortisone injections in that finger join once a year, thankfully, not really painful at all, but it allows me to shoot pain free.

The Z9 and Z8 are two of the best hybrids on the market currently! I know this is about the Z8, but the Z8 is right under the Z9 as a hybrid and hard to beat that. Nikon is very slept on, in fact I’m still wondering how Nikon beat Sony and Canon to the creation of Auto Capture, it’s a for sure game changer; and hopefully when Auto Capture trickles down, it will allow creators and photogs to have that type of functionality without having the budget for several high end cameras. Anyways, I’m not knocking Sony, but the Z8 is hard to beat at the moment, and I personally can deal with the battery life as you always need more than one anyway, depending on what you’re shooting. Nikon for the win!

I could see the lens selection category be less clear-cut, if adapted lenses are considered, if the drawbacks of using an adapter are manageable. I suppose that Tamron or Sigma E-mount lenses on a Sony body wouldn't have correction profiles, for example. In which case adapted use wouldn't be sacrificing anything in that regard.
@HappyHubris Жыл бұрын
That's an incorrect supposition. Sony bakes lens correction into the RAW file, so Tamron and Sigma have full corrections. It's...literally the biggest reason to go for E Mount.

Nikon is killing it with its superb telephoto lenses, but ironically Sony cameras work better with telephoto lenses because all the controls are consolidated to the right side, allowing the photographer to control everything with the right hand, while the left hand supports the lens. Nikon wasted the top right with a redundant LCD, and put the most important MODE button to the left. How am I supposed to switch between M and S modes quickly if I my subject moves erratically? I never had this problem with the F5, F6, all the way to the D4s. Nikon made a wrong decision since the D5 and should have fixed it by now. Canon used to have the PSAM and mode button on the left years ago, but their latest RF cameras all have the mode control on the right side.

I guess the Sony A7RV doesn't sell that much since the introduction of the Nikon Z8. That's why Petapixel made this synthetic controversy. Sony should rather make Playstations instead of their disposable cameras while forcing customers to buy a new camera for each little improvement. They are unwilling to provide firmware updates.
