I bought the A7RV this summer when it was on very good offer with trade-in and cash-back. It is a step-up compared to the A7RIV with the IBIS, now I can handhold more often and for Bird photography, the new AF is super good, overall the new EVF helps a lot because I most often do manual focusing.

Yes, I have the Sony A7RV, I had the Sony A7RIII, Sony A7RIV, I still have a Sony A7RIVA. The A7RV are much better for Birds and Wildlife then the former R-series, I think it is the best allround full frame Camera right now.

Focusing on birds in flight is a dream with the AI-focus options. I did not use the electronic shutter tbh, and I had no problem with blackouts as I’m so used to it.

To easily go from Stills to Video you don’t need to push on the center button. Say you setup C1 for your Stills customization, then switch through the dedicated Stills|Video|S&Q switch (with its small button on the lever) to the Video mode where you can setup a C1 customization for video. There may be an easier way but this should work since Stills|Video|S&Q mode lever gives each mode its own set if C1-C3. Note: The A7CR and A7CII removed the locking button on the dial and the small button on the lever.

You have a valid point! On my A7IV I have setup 1, 2 snd 3 on the mode dial to video-modes. 1 to 25fps, 2 to 100fps and 3 to 200fps 🙏🏻

@@andersmenge yes but I believe the A7IV has no button on it mode dial and I think , like the A7RV, there are three custom setting for Stills|Video|S&Q each for a total of nine.

How well does the a7RV perform with fast moving birds in flight? Is it capable of freezing their body and wings during flight, so it's crisp with very little to no blurring? What's the fastest shutter speed and highest aperture on the a7RV?

It performs well, imo with the AI-autofocus functions. It is more than capable. With the rolling shutter the fastest ss is 1/8000. Would recommend the A9iii with global shutter if you need faster shutter or 120fps and pre-capture. You loose the high megapixel count and the possibility to crop in as much as the A7RV.

​@andersmenge Unfortunately there's some trade offs. I do both filming and photography. I would like 120 fps in 4k at least. However, I don't want a camera with less than 24 megapixels. I also want a camera with excellent dynamic range, not lost with the current stacked sensors and global shutter cameras. I also want a camera that can shoot no less than 20 fps and reveals detail well in low light conditions. Is there such a hybrid on the market that can do all that and not go above 3500 usd or 4000 usd?

@@3DEditor No I don’t think so, at least not from Sony. The A1 would probably fill your needs, but that’s 6500 euros. Most newer Sony cameras has the best dynamic range on the market, so you can’t go wrong with any camera release after 2020. But I think you need to lower your needs and compromise.

​@andersmenge I just read up on the nikon z6iii again. It has all features I'm looking for, except it's dynamic range isn't great beyond 800 iso, from what I read. I assumed since it's a partially stacked sensor, it might do slightly better than fully stacked sensors in dynamic range.

the button lock for the mode dial is something I have always hated on "high-end" bodies, my Canon 70D has it and it just adds one more thing that serves no purpose but to piss its user off.

I couldn’t agree more! The programmable mode wheel on this body and my A7IV makes way more sense. I have programmed it to adjust ISO, and it’s handy to lock that in some occasions. Thanks for your comment!

I disagree. No, it’s not for fast moving situations, but in terms of megapixels it helps a lot with cropping in post. You can not always get as close as you want in wildlife, so having that possibility is gold for me.

A7RV is the better choice. It has the newest AI autofocus features, high mpx count and in general a superior camera, BUT it depends on your needs. Some of my best shots are taken with my A7IV. A7IV is a far better choice if you are doing both photo and video. Can’t go wrong with either, and you’ll save a lot of money opting for the A7IV.

@ thank you 🤝 I’m looking to rent for 3-4 days for a short trip . Hence was confused between these two . I focus more on photos & As its winter and lowlight , confused which one will have better performance. Will be using 200-600 lens

@prasanthsasikumar Both are excellent in low-light, but you will most likely notice more noise from the A7RV. It will also give you much high file-sizes, which is also something to keep in mind!
