I bought my Z9 in June '22 and in December '22 re-purchased a D850. I am a long time DSLR shooter and wanted Nikon's last great DSLR. IMO, there are reasons to own and shoot both despite the mass movement to the mirrorless format. One reason for my purchase of the D850 was that I have more than 20 F mount lenses and could not afford to do a 1 for 1 lens replacement.

Being Nikon users for over a decade, then I bought Nikon D850 in 2019 with several prime lens. Later on purchased Sony A7III without selling D850 because of the hype and wanted to test mirroless camera. I switch between A7 III and D850 from time to time while I even bough Fujifilm X-A5 last year. The outputs from D850 is amazing and I don't think A7III can even match the results. Glad to see your video to see this comparison makes my decision stronger not to switch to Nikon Z system yet ...

If you are a manual mode user the Z9 has the important advantage of being able to see your exposure changes and histogram in the viewfinder (and an artificial horizon, to boot). It almost makes up for having to look at an EVF. I was waiting for battery life to improve before getting a mirrorless and haven't been disappointed with the Z9, though I would need a spare battery for somewhere like Africa. It is a bit of a pain to have to charge my Z9 with a USB while driving. I still have a D750, but suspect the Z8 will replace it.

Like a grip for the D850 for extra battery power, but also to use it vertically. The D850 has a bit more dynamic range at lower ISOs. Both are great cameras.

Nikon D810, Canon 5DIV and Nikon D850 are said to give the closest image quality to what you would expect from a studio work specialized Hasselblad and PhaseOne medium format cameras! @@theCameraVille It's not a quote from any one, specific person, it's just how generally people in my industry (fashion & beauty) refer to these three cameras. I don't know anything about Z9 first hand, I shoot Hasselblad X system since 2016, before that I've shot only with a Canon 1DX and I've only seen the Z9 RAW files online, so I can't speak from first hand experience but if you ask anyone in the fashion and beauty industry to tell you what the best cameras with full frame sensors are for studio, 90% of the time, you will get one of these two answers: Nikon D810/850 or Canon 5DmkIV. Very rarely will you hear any other cameras name being mentioned. Even my friend who has been loyal to Hasselblad for almost two decades now, has bought himself a D810 when it came out. Z9 is obviously a better camera but there has to be a damn good reason why everyone in the fashion and beauty industry still prefers to use a D850 or 5DIV when they reach for a Full Frame camera, over all the amazing cameras that we have nowadays.

For Nikon, sure (yes I am a Nikon shooter, but there are better options out there if you're willing to look at other brands, like the Sony A1 -- although the A9 is more in line with the Z9, but the A1 is close behind). But at the same time, there is talk that the A7 line (and possibly the A9 line) is coming to and end and we may see one more update, but that the new A1 and FX plat form is what we will see from Sony at least moving forward.

If Nikon discontinued the D850, I would say go out and get one. The Z9 is impressive and unless you buy that, you're still going to want something capable if you shoot sports or wildlife and the other Z cameras still lag a bit. IN fact, I think Nikon will probably pull the plug on the D850 next year (it was released about a year after the D500, and the D500 has been discontinued as of last year -- well Feb of 2022 so basically a year ago now). I imagine the D850 is not too far behind. I'ts on sale now for $2500 and it's still a good value especially if you have a lot of F-mount glass and aren't sold on the Z system just yet. You can still get a Z camera and adapt your F-mount lenses, but unless you're getting a Z9, you may still want to have a DSLR handy. Of course, the Z8 might change that, but we don't have specifics on that camera yet to know.... but my guess is that it will be a step up from the Z7 II / D850 but probably not as expensive or high-powered as the Z9 (probably will be in the $4000 price range, as it will be targeted more towards the Canon R5 / Sony A7R IV and V). The Z7 sits between the R6 and R5, and around the same level as an A7R III.

at the Dxomark laboratory Nikon D850 wins in all Z9. The d850 camera has an iq sensor like a medium format one, no one pulls colors from a black background like in your test, everything is done in moderation and in normal light. D850 won.

I have sold my D850 (and my backup D800) for a Z9 this year and I switched mainly for the following reasons: - IBIS - faster AF with eye detect - no more risk of back/front focus because of the mirror - newer and better glass On top of those things, while the battery for the D850 was a beast (specially if you had 2 with a battery grip), the battery of the Z9 lasts easily twice as much as 2 D850 batteries (with similar playback settings I got almost 3000 photos with the Z9 and I don't remember ever getting more than 1200 with a full charge of 2 batteries on the D850). Other improvements I've noticed is better noise at higher ISO and maybe a slightly higher dynamic range.

To adapt a phrase from the political world, "It's the VIDEO, stupid!" There is not enough difference in technical IQ between the D850 and Z9 for me to choose one over the other. However, once I figured out the incredibly flexible, intelligent, and challenging, AF system, I CAN get shots I'd never be able to get with the D850...unless I just got lucky. The EVF is amazing and I never bother to run it in 120Hz refresh mode...no need, to. One other benefit that I didn't fully appreciate until I tried using it a few times is DX mode...with an EVF, you can shoot in crop mode, but have the EVF fill the viewfinder with the cropped area, not be stuck with just a graticule showing the DX area in the OVF. That was one of the reasons I always preferred shooting with a D500 over the D850 in crop mode. I like seeing my composition exactly. I have zero interest in a mirrorless version of the D500...what's the point other than saving a few hundred dollars? Owning both a D850 and D500 (along with a sizeable selection of Nikkor lenses, primes and zooms) since each were released, both served me well and I was in no rush to switch to mirrorless. Zero interest in changing to another mfr's system. However, I was in the market for a 4K, lower-end pro camcorder by Sony or JVC. When I saw the video spec's of the Z9, I ordered one 2 days after the release and received it in mid-April. About 3 weeks later, I sold both my D850 and D500 and over the next couple months, sold a good bit of my F glass, though I do still have a 500pf, 300 f2.8 VRII, 70-200 f2.8E FL, 14-24 f2.8 and a couple others that are useful with the FTZ. Z lenses I've purchased are the 14-30, 24-120, 100-400, 28 f2.8 and 40 f2. I'm good for now, but if that 85 f1.2 isn't astronomically priced, that may be next. I also see a 600 f4 TC in my future once those become readily available. Absolutely no regrets in making the switch and the video capability of this camera is over the top in every mode. Trying to shoot video of anything that moved with the D850 or D500 was an exercise in frustration. Now I can switch from stills to video, or vice versa, in the blink of an eye if an opportunity presents itself. What I miss is having two almost identical bodies...the D850 with a 24-120 or 70-200 on it and the D500 with 500pf or 200-500 on it when out walking about or traveling in a vehicle. Always at the ready. No good option to do that right now that I'm willing to pull the trigger on...I'm not about to buy a FF Z body until new ones appear with the Expeed 7 processor. That said, the sale pricing on the Z50 is very attractive and could be a stop gap until new models appear...and would make a great travel camera kit.

If your not a pro shooting super fast paced sports or wildlife or needing/wanting the video features of the Z9, the D850 is the way to go. But how much longer will Nikon support the D850? I think at least another 7-10 years. It still sells pretty good, unless they come out with a mirrorless equivalent. I thought Nikon fixed the EVF with problems with the Z9? I know I could use a EVF in bright sunlight conditions. Also, once you add the V-Grip to the D850, you still need a battery or 2 at around $230US & the charger for it which only come as a dual charger. There is an after market charger that could save you a few dollars. All said, around $700-800 US to get the 9fps. For me a hobbyist photographer vested in Fmount glass, moving up to the D850 from the D810 would make more dollar sense. I guess I'll hold out & see if Nikon releases something between the Z7 &Z9. A spot on AF, no blackout high res EVF with 10-12 fps, 50 shot buffer & a decent rear monitor, $3800.00 would do it for me. If I had more disposable income, I would have jumped brands already. As long as Nikon has been in the camera bizz, they should of had better first/second generation mirrorless. NO EXCUSES!

What I've learned in my experience is that getting a new camera is not about image quality (not always) but about making the process of getting a image easier and more efficient. Lenses improve image quality. So if you find yourself missing a lot of shots due to some images being out of focus, or iso performance is too limited, or you're spending too much time with changing settings in fast paced shooting environments... Upgrade cameras If your images need to be sharper, more crisp, and cleaner upgrade lenses. Or if you just can't get the shot because you don't have the right lense... Then obviously... Get a new lense

A downside with DSLRs is that you need to calibrate all your lenses, otherwise you won't have critical focus. On the other hand, PDAF on DSLRs is still a bit more capable at focusing on small details like individual tree branches etc.

All mirrorless cameras' picture quality on high iso heavily depends on a shutter mode. Electronic shutter yields worst results in terms of grain and banding, whereas, mechanical -the best. Feels like Z9 was run on electronic shutter against D500 on mechanical?

D850 is about to be discontinued so no more repair down the road. With NPS , once your system is discontinued, your no longer apart of the Nikon Professional Service until you repurchase a system that is still in production. 3rd party will over charge the repair from then on. Probably not worth the repair cost on a D850. Your looking at now but rather than later. Enjoy the fruits of tech of the future. Cheers~!

If Nikon had IBIS it can work together with a stabilized lens to deliver even better results, allowing photographers to shoot at slower shutter speeds and videographers to capture smoother handheld video. Also many manual lens shooter could had benefited from it as well. In another words, there was no innovation in that department on Nikon behalf.
