Out of all the videos I've watched so far about the Zf, yours (even as a Canon user) is much more authentic and full of enthusiasm. Old cameras looked amazing, I wish more companies would make cameras based on their older cameras. It would be so cool to see a Rolleiflex camera coming back to life! I am a Zfc owner. One thing that I find really annoying is the lack of smaller cool looking zoom lenses. Current zoom lenses look horrible on both Zfc and Zf cameras and the shooting experience becomes a pain. Yes to older looking cameras, no to current lenses.

Man…I’ve been really struggling between getting the ZF or the Sony A7Cii as my first FF mirrorless. I was kind of in the mindset of “just get the Sony, they’re the #1 brand for years now, and they seem to be the only ones innovating” But as someone whose first camera was a chunky Nikon DSLR, I just feel so proud of them for making a comeback and I want to reward them. It was sad hearing they were on the verge of bankruptcy up until recently. They need the win, and they’ve made a beautiful product.

Great video man! Yeah, i started up till night (on a school night lol) for the Zf announcement! I really relate to your sentiment about how a camera feels as a tool for making art. It's cool that we have these retro-inspired options today. Also, yes the M8 was Leica's first digital mirrorless offering which hit the market in 2006, but it was actually Epson that made the first digital mirrorless camera! The Epson R-D1 was released in 2004! So crazy to think that it's been almost 20 years then (:

I shoot on film (medium format film), at the moment and have been wanting a GFX. With the release of the new GF110mm tilt-shift, along with the specs of the new GFX100 (the 2nd), I am leaning more and more to getting into the system. This Nikon ZF is also “calling my name,” just because of how it looks. I already have a Nikon Nikomat and an S3, but I am not sure if I need another 35mm camera. Any way, the microSD card is a brilliant idea. It gives the user the choice, to put in as much memory as he wants and at the speed he wants. I think Nikon did it right, when it came to storage on this camera. More and more, this thing is calling to me (like the Borg Collective), but I must resist. Otherwise the G.A.S will get me.

That was a good video I have a Nikon Z6ii and a Zfc I think the Zfc has been out nearly two years now (you said one) I would not buy a Zf as I am on a limited bdget and the retro thing is not a big deal for me. I'm going to wait for the Z6iii (looks like a real modern pros camera!) I love my zfc as its small and Mint Green. That said I think NIkon have done a great job with the Zf and that it will sell very well.

Excellent take on it! I started back in the 1980s when the FE and AE1 were the standard. Today I’m still a working photographer that needs a good well thought out tool…..but why can’t it also be fun and appealing? I’ll never understand all the critics that dismiss cameras like the Zf as “just a pointless exercise for hipster fashionistas”. The Zfc and the Zf are great cameras (they didn’t half-ass them at all), and also fun, cool, and appealing. Why not?! 😉 It actually makes me want to go out and shoot more, even when I don’t have a paid job to do. I certainly hope the Zf is super successful, and I hope that Canon follows suit. 😃

The Sony A7 line doesn't enough credit for what I think finds a great middle ground between modern and retro styling. The a7c of course has that gorgeous silver top on a sleek rangefinder body, but even my a7iii has a lot of the shape and angles of that Pentax and Nikon just with a modern matte black body. Over the past few years I think I'd say Canon has had the most modern, least retro, designs, but hopefully you're right. Hopefully they'll surprise us. I want a Fuji but frankly I'm a little upset that I can't get an x100v at a decent price.

A couple of points of accuracy, the 2013 Nikon Df was their first attempt at a “retro” style digital camera. It married a middling sensor with a pro (state of the art processor which produced superb images. Their one mistake was it’s price point (to high) which prevented it from selling well. I bought a copy second hand, the price was right. The camera quickly eclipsed my “technologically superior” D750 as my go to camera for most uses. Nikon have produced full flippy screens for APC cameras before, most notably the retro Zfc. The new Zf looks almost identical to the Df, even down to the small (my one gripe) grip. Inside it’s using the same philosophy as the Df, state of the art Expeed 7 with a middling tech’ sensor, but this time at a price that looks very tempting. Even better I have a birthday coming up😊

I refused to except early digital cameras. Over the years i have had some and moved on. I had a canon g12 the an x100f some Panasonic thing. and some slrs. I don’t have them anymore. I still have all my old film cameras, pentax me and all my old nikons (fe/fm3a/f2/f3) Because I have so many old nikkor lenses i did buy a d600 which is a great camera. I thought about a df but thought it too expensive for a digital camera that will fall behind with time. The film cameras to me are still a joy to use. Im tempted with this zf. Time will tell. As much as I would luv to give a Leica m3 a go, I would hate to spend that much money on Leica glass which would be in the formats I already have in nikkor lenses. And i do love nikon as a brand. I think you have hit the nail on the head here. Great video Im considering buying one of these

If Canon did do something like this after the AE1 program and added internal film stock along with film stock being added to the internals of the ZF and ZFC, there really would be no reason to buy a retro Fuji and this could seriously damage a Fuji sales for XT5 on down. Fuji would have no answer for this as they aren’t going to enter the full frame game. If Nikon takes this next step to add that film stock internally, this ZF could be their best selling camera, outselling the Z8 and Z9, especially while possessing some of those cameras features but at a much lower price. For all intense purposes this is a Z6 III without a battery grip capability. Nikon brought their A game here with the ZF.

Olympus had the Olympus Pen F Micro Four Thirds camera and you could argue that all of the Olympus line-up in the OMD and Pen series were retro cameras to a large part, starting with the E-P1 and the later the E-M5. Pentax had the MX-1 which had a BRASS body. Nikon had the Df. And what is retro really? Canon's design language was created by star designer Luigi Colani dates back to the first EOS cameras in the early 90s, more than 30 years ago - that's retro. Cabon still uses that design language.

I think half the Leica owners are camera snobs that own one so they can say, "Hey look at me. I own a Leica." I really don't think they're as good as what they sell for. I'm not saying they make bad cameras. I think you're just paying for the name. There's one thing Fugi has over Canon and Nikon and that's apsc glass. Since most of their cameras are crop sensor cameras, they have top notch glass you you with them. That's not necessarily true for Canon and Nikon. Their crop sensor cameras are mostly starter cameras. That lenses are cheaper. Nikon has a 16-50 z lens that's the equivalent focal length of a 24-70 but it's not an f/2.8 lens. Neither brands make equivalent focal length lenses to the full frame lenses. And the quality of those lenses isn't as good as the higher end glass. But Nikon is in a good position here with the zf. A lot of street photographers like the feel of these retro bodies but don't like a crop sensor like the Fuji cameras. That's why they don't want a zfc. Nikon doesn't have a large selection of DX lenses either. And this zf is not just a plain stuck camera that fits a niche. This camera has the latest tech inside. The one thing it doesn't have is a blackout free experience in burst mode. They pulled out all the stops for this camera. It makes me wonder what will be in the z6 III when it comes out.

In my opinion, one of the key differences between Nikon and Canon, is that modern Canon camera bodies are fairly beautiful, or at lest several of them are, while all of Nikon's modern Z cameras are quite ugly (with the exception of the Zfc and the new Zf). There was good reason for Nikon to change things up. I mean I really agree with your point that people like beautiful things, such as cars, computers, furniture --even food. Obviously. But Nikon has been making incredibly ugly cameras ever since they went mirrorless. If you put a standard "pentaprism" onto the Z9, it looks 100x better. I always buy top of the line in cameras, but I refuse to buy anything as ugly as a Z9. But all they would have to do is take the "pentaprism" from the Zf and put it on the Z9. It makes a huge difference! It turns it into a beautiful Nikon again, with all the high-end specs to boot.
@davidaltizer9 ай бұрын
Fair point! I do think of all the modern cameras canons are the best looking. You’re right. Sony does that and it helps but for some reason their cameras are ugly as sin.
@Getoffmycloud539 ай бұрын
Canon has never looked back, their design philosophy and UI approach are simply incompatible with retro styling. Nikon has played with retro, with their Df. Canon will not go retro. Fujifilm has found a niche, let’s see if Nikon will succeed with the Zf (the Df was not a success, is the Zfc a success?), keeping in mind that their main bodies are not retro. Leica is an extreme niche. Context - I have a Fujifilm XE2, XPro2, XT2 (I am on the market for a XT5/Xpro4) and Nikon Df (amongst other Nikon and Canon DSLRs). I have pre-ordered a Nikon Zf. But I don’t think it will be a success for Nikon, because there no real retro lenses for the Z system, so it is only half the equation. Also the majority of pros don’t like retro, think of it as a gimmick, so it will be a niche for a relatively more prosumer market, which will limit sales. Canon will not even try retro, apart from some styling elements on a compact.
