Nikon Zf vs Nikon Z6II Video Eye AF Comparison

Are you using or planning to use Nikon Zf for video? How important is the eye AF for you in a retro style camera?

@@nespressoman if you are a professional photographer and need to claim the best in your photos, S lenses are a good idea. But for general shooting, not worth the extra cost unless you have the money.

Can confirm: my Z6 also like to focus on trees and leaves. My Fuji would routinely find faces in leaves and shrubs.

I bought the ZF, not because of the styling, but because of the technology packed into this camera for $2,000 USD. I have used mine for about a week and it is a joy to use. It took some time getting used to since I have shot with the Z5 for some time. The image quality is superb, and the AF tracking is much better than my Z5. It tracks my kids better as they are running around. I also noticed the tracking of the Z6II would stop at some point when you are further away from it and no longer autofocus. The ZF tracked you when you were far away from the camera or until you left the scene. The ZF delivers and this camera is very encouraging of the Nikon cameras that will be released in the near future. Thanks for the video.

Agree. The Zf focused further away. I did not narrate that portion of the video on purpose as I didn’t want to sway people anyway but rather let them make their own observations, just like you noted. Thanks for watching and I plan to deliver more similar content.

I shoot D3S & D3X currently and I had an FE2 back in the day. I may get a Zf and if I do, I'm not going to worry over lens size. I will use my 24-70 f2.8 AF-s on the adaptor for portraits and I will support the lens with my left hand as always. I'll pop something small on for walk-around shooting. I currently use a Canon 70D & 17-40 f4L for video to a Zf would be a big upgrade.

Awesome video! One thing I noticed almost immediately was the screen output lag of the Z6II. It was most noticable when you clapped your hands at 9:02.

Thanks V. Much appreciated. Yeah, foliage is beautiful here, lots of colors and fresh cool air. The Zf is nice little camera that could be used for more than just street. Just because it is a retro camera, given its tech in the camera, it can be used for many use cases. I love the 24 megapixel sensor for portraits. You probably know yourself that 24 megapixels is more than enough for weddings.

As a wedding photographer with two Nikon Z6 II I’ve been waiting on the III but can’t wait any longer and just purchased on of these last week. I bought the small rig grip and I’m also looking into purchasing the actual Nikon grip. The ergonomics of this camera is the only thing I’m a bit nervous about on an eight or ten hour wedding day.

I use the Nikon z 26mm,Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 on the FTZ adapter and the Nikon z 85mm 1.8. They all work great on the ZF

@lorseyjones4807 I eventually want own some voigtlander glass for my ZF! I'm enjoying my 85mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 50mm 1.8 pancake AIS lenses so it's hard justifying buying manual glass atm.

How beautiful the ZF looks next to the z6, I think just because of its design alone you can already want it for yourself. There was some difference between the Zf and Z6II and I did not comment over the video on purpose as I wanted for people to make their own opinion from what they see. But certainly the Zf is better as it picks up a person from further away. Thanks for watching Anton!

Here is the problem with eye auto focus, most test are done with one person walking around the room, when you try to photograph a event with multiple people in the same area it's hard to keep focus on one person, this is a problem i had with the Fujifilm XT5 during our granddaughters cheerleading program.

well...the good news is that Nikon got that problem solved for us. you can select an eye area AF with box and can even customize the box (small or large) and only those people who are in the box camera will focus. I use this function all the time at weddings and my hit rate with that setting approach is nearly 100%. I'm not familiar with how Fujifilm does it.

I'm in a bit of a quandry...I want to switch back to Nikon so badly simply because of this camera and the 200mm f/2. However, my a7IV is no slouch. Do I pick up the Sony 300mm f/2.8gm and hope (and pray and hope and pray for the next decade) that Sony eventually releases a 200mm f/2...or do I just get this with the 200mm f/2 and completely switch back to Nikon? My main subjects are children and bees, and I can see this camera will be more than capable for my needs. First world problems, innit? Such a beauty and reminds me of my old FM/FE2.

Let me through something else at you! The Zf is a champ, so yes it’s a go. If kids and bees is your thing, you might be better off with Z 135mm 1.8. It is, arguably, better than 200 f2.

The ZF is has less lag! Look at the display and push pause you will see the difference, on the ZF the person is ahead compared to the Z6II. Meaning the Z6II HAS MORE LAG WITH REAL WORLD..

I am hoping they get the z6iii new version out by early year with much of the same tech as ZF. I prefer the top LCD and bigger grip of the Z6ii. I only have the Z5 for now but will sell at some point. I don't need the rotating dials on top of ZF. Otherwise the ZF is a great camera with better autofocus similar to AF of Z8. Perhaps Nikon does not want release Z6iii too soon, so sales on Z8 will continue. Likely next year it will. But for now ZF looks like a solid performer of a camera with its stellar AF.

For stills FTZ adapter and g lenses, I would say nearly as good as the native z lenses. However, for video Z lenses are much more superior.

This is really not a comparison, it's all about the Zf ! Not much about the Z6 II Which is still a fantastic camera, with a proper grip and CFExpress card. How retro can the Zf be without real native Z lenses that has a true aperture ring ? And a second micro SD card ?

There are a lot of third party lenses. And there is no problem using a micro SD card and even an SD card. Tests have proven that.

@@carlosandreviana9448 I'm sure it's a good camera, but styling is not important to me. I do need a bigger grip, and I do not like the flip out screen. No real retro camera has a flip out screen. Nikon is trying to please everyone. I own the Z6 II and a Z8 anyway so will wait for the Z6 III. I never said the Zf is a bad camera but I guess it's not for me. By the way, I still have a FM2 with some older Nikon manual lenses so I know a bit about retro Nikons.

I really like the micro SD card for video recording in my ZF. I have the SD UHS II card, but it's only 128gb. I installed a 1TB micro SD that I bought for a previous smartphone I used to have. For shorter video recording, I can save on my SD Card. For longer video recording, the micro SD card can record at 10 bit 4k 60 fps with no issues.

I’ve thought about that I would need to use some manual focus lenses to have a real aperture setting on the lens. I mainly shoot street photography so the zone/range focusing on lenses is important.
