Nikon is going to sell a lot of these. If Fuji can get $2K from people for an APS-C retro styled body this is a no brainer for Nikon. Especially with the improved AF, articulating screen and dual card slots. In competent hands, this camera can be a workhorse for sure.

@brownbear100 11 ай бұрын
Fujifilm does however have a large selection of lenses with a marked aperture ring to provide the full retro/classic experience. Use a third party lens with no aperture ring with one of its classic styled cameras and it's just not the same. Meanwhile at Nikon it's just crickets in the lens department. No ZF series of lenses? Not even one for the launch? And what's up with having a PASM lever as well? Training wheels? You achieve that with the dials if you are buying the camera for the dials. Open goal for Nikon with no Fuji FF for those that feel that they need that. But it feels Nikon is only half committed to retro - just after the superficial aesthetic. And I agree with Fro, if you just want the aesthetic, the zfc is plenty, or go for the real deal with a Fuji that actually provides the full retro package.

@@stra998 I thought so too, when I first tried a Fuji, but I quickly learned how to set up the camera and edit the files properly. In the right hands you'll struggle to see much difference if any between pictures taken with Fuji APSC or M4/3 for that matter all other things being equal. Start with don't use Lightroom and go from there. There's reasons to choose any brand or format over others, but these days if you get bad images out of any system, it's not the camera.

@@Adrian-wd4rn As a Fuji shooter, I will tell you the crop sensor size literally doesn't matter. As a pro, it does absolutely. But I'm a systems architect and a hobbyist photographer, I couldn't care less. Too many sacrifices for a bigger sensor. I bought the D850 when it came out and I ended up not shooting much because it was big and bulky with all of that full frame glass. But I didn't know any better at the time. I was just taking advice from professional photographers always going "you have to have full frame". So I did. It's not even a money thing for me, I could buy two Z9's for the cost of my watch. I just don't need the low or wide angle performance of full frame. A LOT of people don't. I don't do giant prints. This seems like a wonderful camera. Not every photographer needs god tier AF and super high end specs to get the results they want. It’s funny in how specs keep getting better and better, eventually things like the camera’s appearance matters more; after a certain point these cameras are nearly perfect with ludicrous horsepower…what’s left? How about this camera I’m carrying around all day looks nice? The Zf isn’t an utterly perfect camera but it sounds like a win for Nikon, and to get in the door for $2240 for the camera and a lens, I’m tempted to get one myself.

It's prolly quite suited to street, equipped with a manual focus lens. But street doesn't need 14+ fps, clever AF, 8-stop IBIS or ultra-capable video. I suppose you could use it in the street one day then go to a ball game the next with some long glass (though sounds like that's not advisable) then on safari with the same long glass or do a bit of landscapery, then set it up in a portrait studio after that; if, indeed, you're into multiple genres. But then what's the point of the retro look? If you just want something for the street, buy an old film camera, a nifty 50 or 35/1.4 and go forth.

Precisely. There are more hobbyist photographers than pro photographers. Just like there are more pilots than there are professional pilots. That's one point that Jared doesn't get. He views things through the same narrow lens of just the professional. He's a good photographer, but over the years I found his transition from a humble professional who peddles in lots of great humor and sarcasm to blurring those lines between humor and sarcasm and now comes off as outright cocky and/or pushing an agenda. Case in point, a lot of the times he complains about foreground objects misinforming locked eye detection I've rarely replicated it. In the cases I have it was when a shot was captured while the lens was changing focus. It is if it was focused on the bubble wand it then acquired the eye and the shot that he captured was the transition shot after acquiring the eye but still focused on the wand. Perhaps it would be more informative in those cases if Nikon were to render the focus square as red until the I was in focus. If that's what he's talking about in terms of a fix I agree. However he presented as a failure the focus system. Given my own experience and watching his video I feel he is well aware what the actual problem is but to push the agenda of Nikon being behind he doesn't dig deeper in the video.

The normal level of snarkiness from the JP - no this vid was a we bit more optimistic. So thanks for that. OK what did JP hate -- let me predict - EVF resolution, LCD resolution, Auto-Focus, battery life, micro SD, LCD flippy great but no tilt on back like Sony. I was wrong - you did not HATE the EVF or LCD well not upfront. No views on most of the rest. Then at 2 mins in test version did not have the optional grip - SO BUY the Freekling optional grip. The camera is NOT FOR YOU - it is for Asian men who carry handbags and their beret wearing german/central european equivalents. I expect most will buy some matching colour. It is certainly NOT a camera for either working pros nor blue collar parsimonious mid-westerners or most folk on forums. Few potential owners would understand portrait orientation and simply will shoot landscape. OK a very few "vlogger"?"selfie idiots will stick this on a stick and shoot themselves - well the grip is a non issue and I expect SmallRig will have an l-bracket with grip out soo as well.. The target audience will get a camera to match their handbags and shoes and probably hair colour. AND how about this don't freaking shoot at f/1.2 when your subject is close !!!! NOT an issue if you use a reasonable aperture. Yes slow shutter read will lead to warping. Well it is HALF the price of the Z8 so... Lack of documentation leave many questions - but one for YOU -- what card were you using to get a hot warning? Clearly not a top V90 UHS II. Were you writing to both cards. Most should not use the Micro SD EVER. The iii's will come in 2024 - as has been predicted for some time. in the meantime any working pro Nikon shooter should buy a Z8 and or a Z9 -- if you need the capabilities then buy the gear you need and stop whining.

Nail on the head. With its bang up-to-date internals, the retro look is a head-scratcher and seemingly pointless. Want the retro look and to 'slow down' and attract interest from passers-by who think you've gone all last century while telling you they, too, used to have an old Nikon and shoot film? Go and buy an old Nikon, some manual primes and go shoot film. Cheap as chips*, as much 'tog fun as you could poke a viewfinder at, all the dials you want without the cheaty finger wheels and digital backup and hugely beneficial to your 'tog skillset. * I'm talking about acquisition of course. Film and processing costs can put folks off. But do it at home rather than pay to have it done and costs come down and enjoyment goes up. And, believe me, when you know that each shutter release costs you actual money, you learn to take far fewer shots; compose, focus and expose right first time; and up your keeper rate. And you learn to chimp in the viewfinder before, not on the screen after. Which is not really chimping. It's being a better photographer.

I got my sunset orange Zf today. It’s heavier than expected, reminds me the old solid metal body. So I understand the grip complain, but retro style camera should be held retro way, with left hand resting on the palm, so I don’t have issue with the lack of handle. I’m glad I bought this Zf after unloading all my Z gears two years ago. It sits next to the very first camera I bought, a Nikon FG (couldn’t afford FM2 when I was a student) and the only DSLR I kept, a Nikon Df, Zf definitely looks like at home other than the loud orange color. Tried it with Voightlander 40mm f1.2, it is an excellent combo. The EVF is better than Z6 to me. Also added an orange color shutter release button, it’s perfect now. Yeah, I would prefer a photo only, tilt screen camera. For video, I have Sony FX30 and Insta360 RS One. Hybrid just means compromise to me.

That said, if he really needs a grip, attach a $25 flash bracket on the camera. I use a flash bracket all the time when I feel like I'm going to be taking a lot of really critical shots. Spec-wise this looks amazing. All I wanted out of the Z8 was at least 10 bit video with N-log, a fully articulating screen and slightly better auto focus at half the price of the Z9. As cool as Z8 is, 12 bit raw is overkill and 10-bit works just fine for many things without the hefty data cost/logistics. Having 4K60 probably would've been an instant buy but I definitely find myself hesitating on the retro styling. It's very cool and does look great, but I have gotten very used to the ergonomics and practicality of modern camera grips and could see it being very annoying after several hours of shooting. Looking forward to what the Z6iii/Z7iii might bring to the table

Actually I would love a fully stripped down digital retro as you described. You could literally put the fake film advance and just have that serve as a thumb rest or shutter reset or something fun like that. Remove the back LCD, just have very few buttons, great high megapixel full frame sensor, average AF. Literally build it retro, high quality build but remove a lot of the modern conveniences and save on cost. Personally that's all I really need for what I do. Something like the leica D cameras with no backscreen but include AF and an EVF. Very niche but would be very fun.

People like retro styling, it’s a conversation starter, and it also doesn’t look “professional”. I just took my camera to an event that “professional cameras weren’t allowed”. I have a silver XT5 and had a Zeiss 50mm sonnar attached. I have a small rig grip but removed it for this. There is a use case for this type of camera, not everyone wants a bulky grip. I have the Z6 and I do like the ergo but I don’t think it’s bad to have the option of a smaller grip

I agree with the reviewer. If I’m going to spend $2000 for a camera body, it’s not this form factor. For the street photographer, the phone is becoming more and more a competitor even if it loses out on optics. I’m still looking for a sub $1200 camera that is smaller, potentially has a fixed pancake-like lens and a first class autofocus system that can be used for creative filmmaking and street documentaries. A 35mm sensor is more than fine.

As a Df owner, I have to say the Zf probably isn't for everybody however I bought my Df because of the mechanical dials. I have fumbly fingers and was constantly changing settings where with the Df I don't as often. You and a lot of people hate the grip but I like it. I don't know if the grip is the same as a Df but if it is, it's ok by me. I have arthritis in both my hands but both the grip and dials makes my life easier for whatever reason. The one thing I hate is the micro SD card. Nikon always seems to throw a monkey wrench into things. Anyway. Sometime in the not so soonish future I will probably buy one or a Zf II by that time. Thanks for doing the p review. :)

It’s an awesome idea but Jaren’s idea of *removing* features usually adds to the cost. You need to raise the price of such a niche product to cover the R&D. Plus the winder mechanism would need to re-engineer a lot of the body if it actually was a functional winder at all and not just a little piece of metal like the Leica M10-D’s cosmetic advance lever.

If you’re complaining about the grip, you’re using the wrong lens for what this camera is. =) Simple as that (at least to me). The grip IS an ergonomic compromise, but one that the target audience is probably willing to make (I have a Sony A7C - I should know).

Nikon seems to agree having chosen to make the kit lens the pancake’ish 40mm f/2. To me it’s more cute than cool. The ergonomics are super important for me personally. I won’t be disappointed if it’s a hit. Photography is in a weird state where absolutely everyone I know is constantly taking photos. Yet so few people ever use a dedicated camera. Sometimes marketing is more important than practicality?

No mention of face/eye detect with manual focus or the focus point IBIS? Strange. This camera will bring old MF lenses back into the mix and they should work well with the 24MP sensor. I think it makes total sense to come out with this now as they are able to leverage some existing technology to make a compelling camera (sensor, Expeed 7, etc) with some new features (pixel shift, IBIS etc). I can see them planning a 33MP stacked sensor in the Z6iii, or even a 20MP Z500, but want to let the Z8 play out first.

Once again Fro misses the point. This isn't a pro body camera or for working photographers on the job. This is aimed more towards street photographers and for travel with a stylish look. That will be the z6 III and z7 III bodies. And you have you remember that there's more people shooting Nikon than just in America. There's a lot of people in the Asian and European markets that will go crazy for this camera. If I was a dedicated street photographer, this would be my choice. I hate the screen blackout in burst mode so I'll probably save up for the z8 next. But this gets me excited to see what will be in the 3rd gen z6/z7. A lot of you KZbinrs were saying Nikon was dead a few years ago. What you failed to understand is that Nikon was working on their lens lineup first. The ordinal z6 was just to get a camera out. The 2nd gen were just improvements to try to keep up. Now that their lens lineup is nearly complete we will start to see better bodies that are on par or even ahead of Sony and Canon. Canon's lens lineup isn't that great. Sony has a lot of lenses but a lot of them aren't that great. The z mount is the king of mounts. The new 135mm Plenta is a testimony of what Nikon is capable of doing with that mount. Remember, you date the camera but marry the lenses.

I know that this camera is not for me. I'm in the Nikon ecosystem and will keep there, but the form factor and the lack of CF Express is a dealbreaker for me. This said, I think the camera looks amazing, feature and aesthetic-wise, and will surely sell well, for those that wanted an X-T5 but wanted it to be Full Frame (and have a working AF). Also, seeing Nikon putting good stuff in their mid tier cameras is great, at a price that neither Sony, nor Canon can compete. Sensor shift is a great add, as it is the new processor. This gives, allied with the amazing mid-to-high tier glass Nikon has been releasing, a great view on how the brand will develop from here, and it seems great. Now, if only they made a Z500...

As a Z6ii owner I am more than annoyed that Nikon didn't come out with s/w upgrades to fulfill the promise of the twin expeed 6 processors: some working AF for moving subjects and better AF generally is long overdue. I can only think this came first, because the Z6iii will come with some other enhancements (be that a different sensor, viewfinder resolution(unlikely) or whatever and the Zf is an intermediate model.. Fantastic subjects by the way 🙂

I have a Nikon Zfc...why? Because it reminds me of my first Nikon F and Nikorrmat FTN bodies. I shot semi-professionally and sold camera gear right out of High School in 1974. I just came back from Southern Utah with both my Nikon Z6 and Zfc, and really used the Zfc manually most of the time, along with my 70-200mm f2.8. Loved the extra distance with the crop sensor with the 70-200, and am torn whether or not to replace my Zfc with the Zf. I do plan on getting the 180-600 new Z-mount lens when I can get my hands on one. I guess I'll need to talk myself out of this after buying the 180-600.

I’ve been holding out for a mirrorless Nikon for a while. This one did it for me - I like the retro for the looks, and fully appreciate all of the modern functionality. If it was retro look and also was intentionally hampered by some artificial limitation like a “winder”, I would not have even considered it. This has the right balance of no compromise tech and performance, with a retro look. It only sacrifices in ergonomics, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it especially with the ZF-GR1 grip.

The reason this camera is interesting is not the retro style. It's the toughness and durability. Most cameras are plastic and fragile electronics today. The ultimate camera test is put it on a camera strap, hang it around your neck and bend over to tie your shoe. When it bangs against the table, does it continue to work after ? If it does, now you know you can carry it around everywhere with confidence. Just like an old Nikon film camera. Got it ?

Do you think this issue is known by Nikon ? I saw a lot of people un acknowledge this issue, like it does not exist. In fact like you said, it’s a big issue, because you think you nailed it, but the evf does not show really the actual focus point. This happened to me a few times, nothing risky as it was not a paid job, but this should be like the number one priority at Nikon to fix this. This may be the only downside of Nikon right now.
