This may be the best reaction I have heard to AJ's performance in this song. Not only were you appropriately shocked, you have been the only one who has shown any real appreciation for the role that Screamin' Jay Hawkins played in Angelina's interpretation of the song. Forget all the pop versions. AJ gets her inspiration from the source. You could have zeroed in on a lot more elements in SJH's original that AJ adopted and adapted into her version. And you have a good sense of humor and good video presence. Nice job.

You zeroed straight in to the picture of screaming Jay Hawkins, i have only seen 1 other reactor comment on the picture, you obviously know your music history very well and it was pleasing to see you comment on how well Angelina researched this song before singing it. I believe this may be the best cover of a song ever , Angelina did it so well including the shock rock value of this song, it was shocking in itself that a 9 year old could sing this song with so much feeling and emotion. Fantastic reaction.. spot on with every detail you covered. It is an absolute pleasure to have some give a reaction who actually know what they are talking about. Angelina is just so unique in her approach and her musical style. She almost morphs into the original artist. when she does a cover. she has an amazing gift, a beautiful musical mind, and then combines that with a great work ethic. Even at this age, you can tell she has spent countless hours studying and training. I wanted to suggest a couple of my favorites. First there is "I am still holding out for you ( she was ten when she sang this ) it has a unusual back story, but it is stunning. The other one is " I'm a fool to want you" both the one from Norway's which she did A Capella ( unbelievable ), but my favorite is a version she did in a studio when she was, I believe, 12years old. Anyway I wanted to thank you again for your insight on this reaction,. Have fun traveling down this rabbit hole. It is a endless journey, packed full of amazing performances.

WOW, that was one of the best reactions I've seen in hundreds of reactione's videos about this masterpiece. Not only did you know the original song when you were younger, you also recognize Jay Hawkins on the candle, WOW. Then you can also see how Angelina arranged this song (it was unbelievable, it really is Angelina's arrangement). Very, very good great job. 👍👍👍👍👍 💯 *AJ* 💯 Angelina discovered jazz at the age of about four with her grandmother Mery Zamani. I suspect at first in the form of vinyl records. Angelina's absolute and most important role model is Billie Holiday. Angelina said in an interview with American songwriter last year, “I have to say if it wasn't for the unconditional love that came from Billie Holiday’s legendary music, there would not be Angelina Jordan today. I am very blessed today that her music found me very early, " 🤗🤗🤗

I just want to be on stage" A snippet of Skaylan’s interview of Angelina Jordan (age 12) on Norwegian TV - November 2018 Great work Anna. Angelina is quite shy away from a microphone. However, once she makes the transition to her stage identity, she can be a fire-breathing dragon or whatever mode is called for. She almost hates long introductions and she normally enters and exits the stage with as little fanfare as possible. If I had her talent, I would demand to be carried around in some sort of golden litter preceded with fresh rose pedals. IMO, there is something else at work with her that I believe poets and philosophers have opined about for eons.

I suspect that following this video Angelina's vocal coach(es) encouraged her to dial back on the harsher aspects of the performance. in later videos (Seoul, Korea and others) she treated her voice more gently. Great performances in difference ways. I watched this several months ago, but just came back after watching your reaction to Easy on Me. I find her early years, or should I say, earlier years fascinating. To this day I love her cover of "Summertime" in the Norway Got Talent competition. She was 7-8 years old at the time, and it still shocks me, as much as one of her first audition for the show at age 7 "Gloomy Sunday" when she couldn't even pronounce English properly but the soul she put in that song was unmistakable.
@michaelasher93953 жыл бұрын
There is a video of her at 5years old, in her room sharing her toys, and her English is as accurate any American or British child. Technically English is her 2nd language, but in reality she was raised pretty much bi lingual from the beginning. Her family spoke both languages in their home. You can tell this when in early videos, like " When you're smiling ", and the videos of her 12th birthday, when she speaks English, she sounds like an American girl from the Midwest and her friends have distinctly Norwegian accents.

Now there are several videos to choose from, dating back from when she was 7-8 singing it a Capella on the Norway’s Got Talent competition. But I would go for the studio version she did for the album It’s Magic when she was 11. Greetings from Scotland! I have seen so many reactions to this video, but you were one of the most enjoyable to watch Anna! Did you see her making corrective notes for the Musical Director in the beginning! He smiles and says "Yeah, OK, that makes sense" Incredible! AJ never performed it like this again because she knew it would damage her voice, so future performances all got toned down and relaxed after this. This is a historical moment for AJ and so it should be! If it wasn't documented on video nobody would believe this was a 9yo girl! I think you're correct that there is some Shirley Bassey in there too! Another immense singer from my homeland of South Wales, land of song! (I've only lived in Scotland for about 50 years). Yes they would have been surprised, as we all were, when they first saw her. But, that would have been two years earlier when she sang “Gloomy Sunday “ at the NGT audition. I remember my sister visiting us and asking “have you seen this ?”!! That would have happened in other homes as well.🇳🇴 I have looked at the profiles of the ensemble around her and it is a diverse group geographically, probably carefully selected by the professionals at the studio. Even the video is recorded by a professional photographer who, at the time, was a friend of our princess’ husband. RIP Ari Behn. To AJ’s credit, her skills and professionalism enabled her to attract this ensemble. However, having also seen her jamming session with them on “Portrait of a Man/child “ I see the care with which the musicians treat her, both as a professional and as a child. I don’t agree with commentators that write she’s the boss in that session (she doesn’t tell them to start again, she asks). What I see, and hear, is a carefully balanced symbiosis. Kudos to the ensemble as well. They bring out the best in her.

The two songs you’ve heard from Angelina are great, but you’ve opened the door just a bit. She will amaze you with the number of genres she covers so authentically and beautifully. She frequently covers iconic songs like those two, giving us her own unique arrangement, but always paying homage to the original with her phrasing or tone. She just released a fantastic cover of Billie Jean, completely moving the song into sultry jazz, but paying respect so clearly and honestly to Michael Jackson. To see Angelina completely different and singing a song she wrote herself, try “Million Miles”. (I like the studio version best because you can concentrate on her vocals). Or her covers of Adele will give you new favorite versions. A Million Years Ago is one of her best, but she recently released All I Ask, showing clearly how her voice has not just Adele’s power and emotion, but texture, range, runs and riffs that make Angelina completely distinctive. You’re just getting started, but prepare yourself to hear the best singer you’ve ever heard. Yes, she is that good.

Thank you for your reaction video and your very informative analysis. Angelina Jordan performed this song publicly several times later on. She did tone it down probably on the advice of her vocal coach. In 2017 she opened for Norah Jones at her concert at the Muse In The City Festival in Korea. She performed several songs in front of 40,000 people and the crowd went wild. She was asked by the producers if she can perform another song. She returned back to the stage and very politely said: “They asked me to perform another song for you. Is that okay?”LOL. Here is that performance of I Put a Spell on You. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaGqeIJpp65jbLM I’m not sure if you want to react to it or not, but please watch the video. @@annavaskelainen I had heard the Nina Simone version but when I listened to Angelina then Hawkins and a couple of other covers I realized the genius AJ is exhibiting herein including many of his usually omitted vocal embellishments while updating his socially uncomfortable manner. Great fun to watch! You’ll be relieved to hear that Angelina did this song once like this, in the studio for posterity to enjoy forever and as an early testament to what she was capable of. Then she made sure to be careful with her voice in all live versions. They are still very impressive - doing those long melodic lines in the middle on two breaths instead of three, making the last note hang even longer etc - but without most of the compression and distortion. I am equally impressed with your analysis, even making note of that harmonic minor scale ornament at the end. Please do some more of Angelina’s songs! She has a huge catalogue. Personally, I prefer the jazzy stuff, but Versatility seems to be her middle name…

Love the reaction Anna, and thank you for the CC too. This particular song launched million of Angelina's fans AKA "Angels" down the rabbit hole of this young music genius for which there is no return, fortunately. You really need not worry about her voice in this song as you shall see in any and all over her 140+ covers and originals, her superior vocal abilities have improved 10 fold as she has gotten older, now 15. Would absolutely love to Sub your channel if you continue to react to the best singer in decades, IMHO. Look forward to more from you and thank you for your reaction, comments and analysis and for supporting this young barefoot Angel on your channel as well. 2 thumbs up.

Hi Anna, thank you for your reaction and comments on her technique! This was the first Angelina performance I ever saw and it blew me away, completely, I couldn't believe it - imagine you hadn't been somehow prepared by her AGT Queen Cover... It is still one of my favourites and especially fun to watch reactions on it, all the more if it is a first encounter with her for the reactor... There are few Angelina songs among those many she did that I don't dig that much, but certainly some I love even more than the rest, these are: "Feeling Good" live on show with audience in the stream Gir Terbake (Norwegian TV channel), about 10y old, then "A Million Years Ago", a very intimate Adele cover, recorded privately, just her voice and acoustic guitar, about 11 or 12y, that one had me completely down in tears the first couple of times, meanwhile I'm smiling like a Honigkuchenpferd (sorry, don't know the Englich expression for that one...) when watching it, but I've heard it at least 50 times now... then I love her newest release, which was Billie Jean, where she does, imho, justice to both MJ as to herself with a very profound cover. Also her original "7th Heaven" is great, watch the Official Video, you'll like it, doing videos for your originals as well, she and her team have put some thought and effort into that... next, her recent cover of Adele's "All I Ask" is for me clearly superior to the original, even if she sings only two verses instead of three. The song itself is not that much my cup of tea, but she makes it more than bareable, sung by her I could listen to that all day long. And I definitely must add "Cry Me A River" (audio only, take the album version from "It's Magic", a recording she did on the anniverary, I think 40th, of the orchestra, which is the Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps (or similar...) with them, which is a great production throughout (also "It's a Man's World e.g. or "I'm A Fool To Love You"...) - of all these songs exist also live performances, but often of poor quality, filmed on mobile phones, the recording and mixing of her voice is clearly superior on the studio album, and the orchestra is tight, you'll love it, great brass section... last but not least her four legendary performances on NGT (7-8 y)... I omitted some pieces others will surely suggest, these are just my personal favourites from tonight's persepective... baba

@@annavaskelainen , how do you plan to go forward? Presumably you won't be able to react on all of her output... chronologically, as some reactors do, or randomly, just as couriousity and intuition will guide you? @@annavaskelainen , anyway is fine with me, as long as you do it, I just asked to know whether I should suggest the next must hear after this one chronologically, or just shout out like crazy for what I want to see you react on most urgently... :-D So I'll tell ya the most suggested song, it is "Cry Me A River"! Since I suppose you prefer to react to a performance with visuals, as it may be boring for some listeners to just look at an album cover (though there's you reacting, and for me that is 100% sufficient, your facial expressions and gestures tell it all...), I found you a live performance with the same orchestra with revised audio, that one is listenable though not as shining as the studio version in terms of overall sound mix, and has the advantage of you being able to give comments not only on her extraordinary voice but on her composure as well, which is the one of a ancient greek statue of Polyhymnia come alive and moving graciously in between a bunch of old military guys (great musicians though!), which is a delicate contrast... and you can observe her mouth and throat and anchoring etc. and tell me all about that as well... so here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWS3Z6icgNCSgrc

We will never hear this voice from her ever again. She grew out of it pretty quick. The other rendition she did a couple of years later was a lot cleaner, but didn’t have the depth and character of this one. This was a one and done masterpiece performance by a 9 year old that should be given the highest recognition available.

WOW!! GREAT REACTION AND ANALYSIS ANNA. You seem to have an excellent knowledge of jazz and especially knowing Screaming Jay Hawkins and how Angelina arranged this song using his nuances in her own style....very impressive. This is the only performance that I can think of where she needs the "Kermit" voice to reach the note and the same for the growls. Her vibratos, melismas, vocal fry, breathiness and rich tones on the lower notes added to her interpretations and arrangements make this prodigy a very unique singer/musician. She performed "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER" and "CRY ME A RIVER" both at the Proysenfestivalen 21.07.2017 concert when she was 11 years old and they are both outstanding with a jazz band live on stage. I'm sure you know both songs and would love to hear your analysis on them. Also, "FEELING GOOD" Live on the Stream Gir Tilbake with a full jazz orchestra live on stage is her best performance on stage, imo. I truly enjoyed everything about your reaction and hope to see you again soon!!! Cheers from Florida

frank The "Kermit voice" is known as Knodel or Knurdle. I know Angelina uses it in What a Difference a Day Makes (outdoors concert at 8) and Feelin' Good (the performance you mentioned at 10) and probably others I don't recall at the moment.

Thanks for your excellent review of this performance. I agree it's absolutely stunning, and not just for a 9-year-old but really for anyone of any age. Angelina's talent, control, technique, and understanding of the original makes for a beautiful tribute to Screamin' Jay. If you want to see her even younger, you might look at her Norway's Got Talent performances. Or you could fast-forward to her recent work, like her originals "Million Miles" & "7th Heaven." In between are tributes to Adele, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Whitney Houston, Willy Nelson, Patsy Cline, and dozens of other singing legends (note: I often prefer her covers to the originals!).

Wow… two for two. Another _excellent_ reaction. I usually find it frustrating when reacters try to draw conclusions about how her singing style has changed based on just one song from when she was older and one song from when she was younger (especially this one, which is so unlike everything else she's ever done). But you pretty much nailed it. Everything you said here was absolutely "on point". You even picked up on the two different speeds of vibrato she was using. I've watched _hundreds_ of reactions to this performance, and no one else (that I recall) has ever pointed that out. Excellent! Subbing. (Now, if we could just get you to do her stuff more often…)

This was cool! I didn’t realize you were a big Shirley Bassey fan, she’s one of my favorite singers also. Screaming Jay Hawkins had an absolutely incredible voice, but some of his antics I find problematic, especially for that era but that’s a discussion for another time. There is one section here where Angelina is growling and it doesn’t sound healthy at all and she seems to go a little hoarse afterwards. She was clearly raised listening to a ton of Billie Holiday, lots of people listen to Billie but can’t approach her musicality like this kid can. Some people just understand music on a different level.
@annavaskelainen3 жыл бұрын
Shirley is great. Absolutely adore her, such a strong and charismatic voice! There are risks obviously when a little person is singing like this. I am glad she didn't push herself this much after this recording session.

When you see the four NGT show performances in sequence, you know that she has intense top quality vocal coaches. Her progression in breath control, enunciation of vowels is amazing. I'm guessing they allowed her a few rehearsals and a couple of takes in this style because absolutely amazing and no permanent injury provided she doesn't use it as a style again, which as you noted she hasn't. I do think it is important that parents of other young singers not train children in this style just for the noteriety, the views. I worried about Charlotte Summers, superb Spanish singer same age as Angelina, who did this song on AGT in 2019, and has several other videos often with many similar techniques plus a lot of high hard belting. She seems to have backed it off lately though, good advice I think.
