A 5 m (16 ft 5 in) specimen from Zambia was found to have eaten a "half-grown hippo". At the no-longer-existent Ripon Falls in Uganda, one adult bull hippo was seen to be badly injured in a mating battle with a rival bull hippo, and was then subsequently attacked by several crocodiles, causing it to retreat to a reedbed.

Lions doubtless have to be wary of crocodiles when they come down to the water`s edge for a drink; hippos, on the other hand, need to have an eye on their youngsters all the time, but apart from that, it is safe to say if they were afraid of crocodiles, they simply wouldn`t have chosen to become semi-aquatic.

In a lion's territory the croc would come off 2nd best. Once the croc has lost its element of surprise the lion will outwit it and attack the area where the croc's brain is.
