Years ago someone made an apple that tastes like a grape, and I've always wanted to try it. However, they apparently don't exist anymore. So now, I think the only way I can taste one, is to make it myself.

I by chance tried one of these apples back when they were available in 2011, a coworker offered me one since you could only buy them in packs of three. It was as you described, a mild grape flavor, but it faded the deeper you ate into the apple until it tasted like a regular fuji apple. The next time I was in the produce section at the grocery store, I looked for these things and about fell over when I saw the price, it was $6-7 for just three of these apples, and that was in 2011 dollars. You could buy a whole bag of like 10-12 fuji apples for that price. I never heard about any recalls for health effects of those apples, they just didn't sell well and faded from existence. I've seen several weird fruit hybrids or "designer" fruits pop up in the produce section over the decades, and they never stay around for long because they're either too expensive or aren't appealing for one fruit to taste like another.

what poison? no where on the label does it say poison... granted it mentioned the poison controll center if it was swallowed but in the same sentence it mentions to give the person a glass of water and nile diluted the solution by ALOT but lets be honest, that label is there for liability reasons also a poison would have worse results then a repellent in this case, an orchard is under the open sky, killing a couple of birds will achieve nothing, scarring the ever loving bird shit out of them with a strong burning after taste will achieve alot more because that bird will stay away from the orchard and its offspring will too!

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 ай бұрын
According to some sleuths it might be another very similar product, called Bird Shield. But by all reason they might be equivalent. I think 26.4% might well be due to fundamental properties of this grape flavour chemical, such as its solubility in... Bird-X Bird Stop doesn't specify, Bird Shield specifies as "inert ingredients". Inert. So it's not alcohol. Water, should be water? It is water soluble. The MSDS of these two products disagree on the safety of the product. Bird Stop claims to be a Category 5 Acute Toxin, while Bird Shield says it's "generally recognised as safe" but irritating to skin and eyes. Table salt is Category 5 Acute Toxin, so make of that what you will, with estimated lethal toxicity several times higher. Just in case, i'm not convinced i would want to use Bird Stop, but i think they're likely doing the same exact thing as Bird Shield, they're just being overly cautious, or just uncertain of the purity of their raw ingredients. Maybe their water is an Acute Toxin. Hold your Wee for a Wii.

If you pause @1:30 on the left side it says to use “26.4% of methyl solution of antranilate, as manufactured by Bird-X”. So the Bird Stop or some other form bird repellent solution is literally what was used to create the Grapple. The 26.4% was no coincidence, as it is the solution that was used to create the product. Grapple was most likely founded by a farmer using bird repellent for its intended purpose on his/her crops of apples. Edit: Bird Stop is made by Bird-X, so it is the exact solution used to make it.

@@bibasik7 the soda may have a lower concentration of it than diluted grape stop would. Potentially meaning that it doesn't have a high enough of a concentration to make a difference. As well as the fact that if that is the case then if it diffuses into the apple it will only have a part of the percentage of concentration as the soda hence possibly making zero difference. It may also be that such a low concentration would struggle to penetrate the skin causing this to either not work or take a much longer time to work than simply dipping it in diluted grapestop

The method described in the patent isn't exactly how they were made. When you looked closely at grapples, you could see tiny perforations in the skin with even spacing over the entire apple - there was clearly some additional injection or just perforation to better absorb the flavor compound. And yes, they tasted like grape-y apples. I liked them.

For the following examples, the solution concentrations refer to and include percentages that approximate the actual concentration of methyl anthranilate active ingredient in the admixture. Alternatively, a pure methyl anthranilate could be employed for the purposes of the present invention, diluted to the required concentration and most preferably with small quantities of an emulsifier, as typically employed to those skilled in the art of solution preparation."

For whatever reason, the mystery of the missing Grapple really got to me. Turns out, Grapple Fruits' sole source for the Grapples was C&O Nursery in Wenatchee, WA. Likely, Grapple Fruits was a subsidiary brand of the business, but haven't been able to confirm. In September/August of 2023, the Nursery's owner shut the nursery down, and Grapple production ceased with the nursery closing. The Inventor listed in the patent, Gary A. Snyder, is part of the family that ran C&O. The CEO at the time of their closing was a Todd Snyder, and I found that the nursery management had passed through 4 generations of Snyder's. Gary was Secretary.

Bird Stop's product page on their website claims it has _"No harmful chemicals"_ and is _"Safe for use around children, plants, and food crops"_ and that it works because _"methylanthranilate (bitter, smelly derivative of concord grapes) has a taste and smell that birds avoid - irritates their trigeminal systems"_ What this tells me is that *drinking Bird Stop* is going to be a painful, but probably non-lethal experience. However *methyl anthranilate* is safe to consume. Not only did Nile use it to make his grape soda previously, it's used in grape Kool-Aid, sodas, and candy.

I work in packaging of pharmaceuticals. The safety seal on that Bird Stop was all kinds of burnt. 1 of 2 things happened during packaging. 1. The cap didn't get applied tight befor induction sealing or 2. the bottle got stuck under the induction sealer. Not sure if the integrity of the product would be compromised or not, but I wouldn't have wanted to be the one to test it.

The reason that the company "disappeared" is because they got out of the game before it became publicly known that they were selling people apples dipped in bird repellent. The chemical does in fact say "Keep out of reach of children" and "If swallowed contact poison control immediately"

You could argue that there's something in the evaporation process (or given plenty of time after) that makes the propblems of drinking the slop intert. So it would be "safe" to do so in a controlled setting. But you also have to count for the lowest common denominator, because suppose someone out there loves it too much and eats 24 per meal with a glass of water that might also reactivate the process. Unless, of course, they did something so shady the FDA shut them down and everyone was legally gagged in the ensuing lawsuit or something.

@@Ruinatior"food grade" is a classification for chemicals' _purity._ It means that it is sufficiently clean of _contaminants_ that it is safe for use in foodstuffs (and personal care products, etc.). So as another comment replied pointed out. At 1:30 pause and see on the left side clearly says to use BIRD X also know as bird stop or fruit shield. So in case you wondering, Nile knew, Nile did, and Nile ate. Case solved. Thanks for the great upload.

I am in total agreement except for the fact that it doesn't actually say that. It instead says: "For the below listed examples, the preferred admixture included an "off-the-shelf" 26.4% solution of methyl anthranilate as manufactured by Bird-X, Inc. of Chicago, Ill., U.S.A., and marketed under the names of 'Bird Shield™Bird Repellent' and 'Fruit Shield Repellent.'" It may not actually say "bird stop" anywhere, but yeah. Probably close enough for him to guess. (This wasn't written to argue against your point so much as to save someone from having to pause and find it for themselves.)

And at 1:42 it says only to dip the apple for 1 second, but he does it for 1 minute. This may have been a different part than the section where he was reading from because it does seem like his process was slightly different so this may have been a typo in the summarized section.

I might know why 26.4 % : 26.4 % of 1 US Gallon is 1 liter and Methyl anthranilate turns solid at 24°C ( slightly above room temperature ) . So maybe the pure compound comes from a company that uses the metric system and then the manufacturers adapt the formula to the gallon format, mixing it with stuff to keep it liquid or at least not solid.

@@MadContendery 1 Liter = 0.264 gallon that's for sure, problem is my reasoning only makes sense for the Bird Stop. Those apples were made in US that's a start, maybe the production units also used the gallon system for the bath procedure and it was something like " mix 1 dose of creamy flavor with X amount of water ".
