As someone who melted gold and silver for years for a bullion company, dont fill up the crucible before you put heat on it. What can happen is that the top of the molten material solidifies cause the metal that isn't melted is so cold comparatively, as well as the crucible, and if your metals have impurities, they try to burn off but cant, because you effectively have a tight lid on it. So then you basically have a bomb, a bunch of molten metal under pressure. The only reason im not disfigured or dead is my PPE i had. As soon as i put my hood on one day, i got blasted by molten silver, then i had to grab our acetylene torch to punch a hole through the top of the solid silver to get to the molten mass underneath and release its pressure. To put it in perspective, our crucibles held 300 and 500 pounds, depending on the machine. And we melted that much every 25 and 35 minutes respectively.

The most gold that I have ever seen was in the form of a target for a machine called a Perkin Elmer 4410. It had a vacuum chamber with a rotation table. You injected argon gas into it at a controlled rate and hit it with microwaves from a magnetron source fed to the target through a load and tune controller. The targets were in the celing of the chamber so the argon plasma would sputter the gold off when the shutter was open and it would drift down to the silicon wafers below as they passed by. The targets weighed five pounds minus the stainless steel backing plate to mount and seal them. The shielding for the target would get gold buildup and we would have to remove it with aqua regia that was sent out to a gold reclamation site. I also worked on the CHA Mark 40 and 50 electron beam evaporators. I like the way silver would melt when making up a new source. The beam impace area had a cool electric blue arc where it hit the pellets until they melted. Nickel was a pain sometimes. The engineers would try to ramp up the deposition rate too much and it would pop and weld itself to everything in little blobs. It took hours to hammer off with a beat up wood chisel. Did that line of work for over twenty years. Love your channel.

So what happened there was called flash-over. It happens both ways for gold. At a very specific temperature, gold goes from being a solid to a liquid and vica versa almost instantly. As gold is an excellent heat conductor, it spreads the heat very evenly across its whole mass. Thus, when it hits its melting point, it just liqufies in a flash... When cooling it does the same thing, and as it does so it expells a lot of heat quickly, creating a brief flash of light.
