How hard is it to STOP FOR A STOP SIGN AND FLASHING RED LIGHTS. They need to up the fines to $1000.00 then maybe stupid drivers will stop. I agree kids should be taught to look before they cross but the idiots that should be teaching them are running the stop signs of the school buss, great teachers!

You are right - but did you the see the two children run across the street without even looking? We need education on both sides and educate driver to understand the rule about a divided street. Is a four lane street physically divided by a built up small foundation (sometimes with bushes) there is no need for the traffic on the other side to stop - but they should be aware that children show up between the bushes anyway and that is even more dangerous because you don't see them early enough to break. In case the street is ONLY divided by yellow or white markings - ALL HAVE TO STOP! (Both direction) ... That seems clear und understandable but a lot of people I talk to don't know this rule!

Why only $1000? I really don't get why, with an infraction so blatantly without excuse, fines aren't far higher. If they made the fine $10,000 and 6 points do you think that wouldn't put an end to the problem? I mean what exactly is the argument against?

Correct, if the oncoming lane is physically divided by a barrier then drivers do not have to stop, but if it is just yellow lines, the ALL drivers must stop.

Telling kids not to run accross a road is like telling the sun not to shine. The driver directs them to cross. The longer they are in the road, the more opportunity there is for a driver to pass the bus.

Anyone who got a license had to read where it says not to pass the bus, I don't get it. Like the handicap placard hanging while driving. In Texas the last line of the first paragraph says DI NO DRIVE WITH THIS PLACARD HANGING FROM YOUR MIRRIR. Mine has double sticky tap o it and it's on the dash nice and legal.

Sigh a turn lane does not constitute a divided roadway. The only times when a driver can legally pass a school bus is if the road has two sets of double yellow lines acting as a barrier dividing the road, a physical barrier between you and the bus, or if the bus is pulled over with it's amber lights flashing (hazards flashing next to the brake lights). Otherwise you must stop until the bus turns it's lights off and then begins moving.

School buses have yellow warning lights that are activated before the bus comes to a stop so the violators have no excuse for even coming close to running a school bus stop sign. The violators had plenty of warning. Well, first, I'm not going to argue with anybody on this. I am a school bus driver and I know the law. Also in the state of Virginia, the motor vehicle code says that people need to stop for a school bus even if they don't use any lights at all when passengers are getting on or off the school bus. I am an EMT volunteer with a local rescue squad and even an emergency vehicle cannot pass a stopped school bus when picking up or dropping off children. People just don't like the fact that they're getting caught in the act of running the school bus lights. It's about time they crack down on bad drivers. Every school bus in the United States has amber warning lights. School buses are yellow for safety reasons. School buses transport kids to school and back. Kids don't often look for traffic. A kid should be able to assume that they will be safe getting off and on a school bus and they have the right to be safe. Use Common Sense when you see a school bus. This video should be a Wake-Up call for people driving around school buses, however, unfortunately, some people can't get the message. The school bus driver does NOT have to wait for all the traffic to clear and pass the bus stop before deploying that stop sign. Use common sense and understand that YOU must conform to the school bus passing law. When you see a school bus, hopefully, the brain cells might kick in, and YOU can realize that there are school children present. Also, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, you must stop for a school bus picking up or dropping off school children regardless if the lights are flashing or not. So if you see a school bus, you need to have regard for the safety of those children. Remember, YOU are responsible for their safety when you drive near a school bus.

A citation doesn't mean much anymore. Treat the violation as a DUI/OUI and believe me, drivers will be more careful and more patient. It won't cure the problem, but at least the deterrent will have sharper teeth.

Why not mount a dashcam to the school bus and issue tickets for all motorists that are passing the bus? I tell you, if every idiot who passes a school bus with flashing lights and an extended stop arm gets a ticket, within 2 months hardly any motorist will keep passing school buses. It is simply a matter of the likelihood that a law breaker gets a ticket. Also 3 tickets within 18 months should result in a automatic revoking of the drivers license..

Why not have crossing guards on busses to make-sure traffic is clear and then direct kids crossing streets? Maybe have 2 guards if 4 lanes of traffic are present. Maybe have cameras like cops on guards as evidence. Guards could have stop signs that are lit by flashlights for dark days. Guards need bright vests. Their hats should be bright.
