While I understand citations via camera has been deemed “unconstitutional due to invasion of privacy” at stop lights, this is a completely different scenario. This isn’t about simply running a red light, speeding and other basic traffic violations. This is about common knowledge knowing damn well children are getting off the bus and walking directly into traffic. Some kids have to walk in front of the bus as their home isn’t on the same side as the door. Some kids are very young and have not developed the concept to always look for oncoming vehicles. I fully support more action taken to catch these drivers and not simply send a ticket, but to have more aggressive charges as I feel like more people wouldn’t want to risk catching a case. I personally knew someone who almost lost their 1st grader due to a driver in a hurry, intentionally sped by and passed the bus and hitting this child. The boy was thrown into the air, suffered a bad head injury and endured many broken bones but thankfully did not pass away. I’ve witnessed many drivers ignoring a bus stopping to unload children but, again, thankfully no child was hurt.
@manlymcstud85882 жыл бұрын
i agree, we can make an exception for this. i wish my bus had cameras, one that actually were quality and could catch the license plate. i also wish all my kids paid better attention -- it's actually my younger ones that follow these rules better simply because most of them are eager to please the authority figure. i say that, but my elementary students are english second language kids whose upbringing tends to be better than, ah, certain others. our routes are designed to pick up on the resident side as much as possible. they're also made by computers, so there's always something left to be desired in real life, so there's always some tweaking that needs to happen.

Sometimes it’s longer, it really depends how long it takes for kids to get on or off the bus, in some states you have to wait for the bus to resume motion so it could be 1 to 2 minutes in some cases. I don’t illegally pass stopped school buses and don’t think it’s ok to do so but for me I would be annoyed if I had to stop because I wouldn’t want to have stop from going 35 to 40 (or however fast I’m going) when I’m not even in the intersection, especially if I’m on the other side on a road with 4 or more lanes
@MsKPOPLOVEABLE3 жыл бұрын
@@thevarietykid686 I know it can be longer, I wasn't using 5 seconds as the exact time limit for all bus stops like that. My point is that there's no reason for you to be passing a bus like that especially when they have their sign up. From what I know most buses have a set schedule so most people tend to know roughly when a bus is going to be somewhere. So I feel like you should either leave earlier or look for another way around. Many years ago, I was driving a fully loaded 3/4 ton truck down a VERY steep hill. I was geared down and only going about 25 mph. I came around the corner and just KNEW the bus was going to stop and let kids off. Sure enough, the sign came out and lights started flashing. This was WAY before anti-lock brakes and all four wheels were locked was I tried to stop and laid on the horn. I remember being so scared I would hit a kid. I was looking for where to put the truck (the ditch was starting to look very good) when the driver retracted the sign and waved me through. I stopped anyway, with about 10 feet to spare. And then waited for the kids to cross. The driver yelled through he window "Nice stop. That had both of us cringing...". I still cannot believe how many people just do not care. Drivers are trained to spot these conditions and hold the kids back. They have a tough job, we do not have to make it more difficult. This driver was on top of things. Totally awesome.

The question is best directed at people operating 3,000 pound machines. "Were you ever taught to watch out for young kids at a bus with a stop sign and flashing lights?" I swear, pedestrian blaming in America is sickening.
@letsdiscussitoversometea84798 ай бұрын
@@RafTheDude well, I'm not in the USA - I'm from the UK. In this country, we have what's known as the "Green Cross Code". It's a set of instructions that children are generally taught at a very young age for how to cross the road safely. I was 6 when I was taught how to cross the road using this method. I was given an audio cassette by my mother containing a "story" of a boy who was very carefree about crossing the road, and very nearly ends up being hit by a passing car. When I was around either 14 or 15, I irresponsibly (though in my defence without clarity) crossed the road in front of a bus I'd just gotten off. The next thing I knew, there was the front end of a silver Honda Accord charging right at me. I think I ended up with my hands on the bonnet - that's how close it was. From that point on, I said to myself "Right. I'm going to cross BEHIND the bus from now on." That's never changed. At no time did it ever ONCE cross my mind, that the driver was in any way at fault for his (or her - I've always assumed it was a man) actions. To have expectations of other road users is *extremely* foolish under any circumstances. One further other reason for this, is the possibility of manufacturer error of the vehicles themselves. A documentary on KZbin called "The Quality Connection", produced by British Leyland, shows the types of accidents that can occur anywhere in the construction process if a car. Attributing "blame" for something entirely unpreventable is an element I suspect you're not really prepared to contend with. This is why being responsible for one's own actions is crucial. I imagine countries such as Japan are even more adherent to pedestrian responsibility. The idea of "blame" simply isn't something I concern myself with - genuine common sense on the other hand...
@babidavi69102 ай бұрын
@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 You jump to blaming them for the incident?
@letsdiscussitoversometea84792 ай бұрын
@@babidavi6910 Yes. To a circumstance-dependent extent. As I've explained in my latter, detailed reply in this thread, everyone bears their own responsibility for ensuring their own safety when it really comes down to it, and will be faced with a very unpleasant reality, if the type of scenario that I outlined above as just _one_ possible example of blamelessness on the part of everyone else, should ever occur. Therefore, this merits there being an inducement to exercise one's own common sense when crossing the road (even, not just "limiting" oneself to arbitrarily procedures such as the "Green Cross Code" (codes are for computers after all...)) The documentary (which was produced by automobile manufacturer British Leyland in the 1970s) that I referred to, is a VERY astute cautionary tale, of how completely innocent oversights can occur which can result in life changing - or even life _ending_ consequences, so it's therefore a very sensible attitude to adopt, that one uses that thing in between their ears when going about their affairs. The real world isn't designed to revolve itself around the safety of anyone and everyone, 24/7.

This infuriates so much because there is just TOO MANY drivers like this not just near schools, but at stoplights and stop intersections. I walk to my part time job since it’s close by and almost every time I cross the street at a stoplight and im halfway there, there’s always a car that makes a turn hoping they can go by before I finish crossing. I’ve had a handful of times where a car passes and i’m literally a foot away from it and could possibly get hit with the side mirrors in the face. This is unacceptable. Pedestrians will ALWAYS have the right-of-way.

This would all be fixed if the stop sign was 5x bigger, you’d literally have to drive through the stop sign. Or you could have those things they have for train crossroads. Also the bus drivers should have an air/train horn. Never understood why tow trucks and roadside assistance use flashing sirens but busses use blinking lights. If anything school buses should be more obnoxious than police, fire, and ems. They have red and blue to get attention, so should stopped school buses.

these are great ideas, tho I believe it should just be a given when you see a school bus there is the understanding that it will stop and when it does you should also stop. If a driver can’t tell what a bus is from a few glances, something that looks so unique compared to other vehicles, or they don’t know the rules for driving on the road with school buses then they probably shouldn’t be driving period 😅 but the road signs are great, my city has some for drivers coming from the opposite way of the bus stop and I’ve watched them stop accidents
@ryanlundgren2 жыл бұрын
@@Riskwarrior Yes but with these new self driving cars and drivers becoming more and more distracted something needs to change. @@justabloke7222 so why do emergency vehicles have such bright lights and loud sounds?
