if you paid attention in the scene when Nimona talks about how they feel when she doesn't shape shift, you can see a trans flag in the background [its a neon sign, very subtle] i feel like they did this for a reason, as a ftm [female to male] trans kid, the way she describes how it feels to not be her self, and how if she were to not shape shift she wouldn't be living, it hit close to home for me. this movie is beautiful in everyway, and I never cry for movies but this movie, this movie made me cry, i love this movie, and i love its meaning and subtle easter eggs, its truly a work of art.

I feel though this movie is very much Nimona's story, Ballister also struggled a lot with what Nimona went through, and that's why she was drawn to him. He was seen as an outcast and different from the beginning. And for what the Queen did for him to become a knight, accepting a regular street kid, he eventually did the same for Nimona knowing exactly what it felt to go through. Their stories are intertwined in this movie and it's just beautiful that they found acceptance in each other. I haven't read the graphic novel yet to compare, but I do hope this is kinda portrayed in there too

As someone actively suffering with suicidal ideation and intrusive thoughts, alongside anxiety AND trying to figure out my gender identity, Nimona hit me so damn hard in the feels. I’m someone who just doesn’t cry at films, but Nimona nearly did. I can relate so hard to her struggles with wanting to die but being terrified of those thoughts, and in the climax when she nearly killed herself with Gloreths sword got me so hard, not because a great character was going to die, but because of that pained scream that I have internalised within myself that I can relate to. This movie was fucking great and I’m glad my mates recommended it to me because I wouldn’t have watched it otherwise.

As a trans person who constantly sees others telling people like me that we are the curruption of morality, the downfall of society, are monsters for hypothetical crimes, and that we shouldn't exist, everyday it gets harder and harder to want to be you. It gets hard to want to go on and WANT to live in a world you know doesnt want you. This movie smacked me in the face because Nimona is going though the same thing I am. I think it’s kinda funny how some people are surprised when they find out Nimona’s shapeshifting is a metaphor for gender-queerness… while meanwhile every queer person who has ever written or read a fantasy book already knows that shapeshifting is THE gender-queer metaphor. 😂 Now, I want to be super clear. I think Nimona is a very creative take on this trope that comes from a very genuine place. Great video! I just thought of another thing regarding the queer messaging: It's awesome that they have Ballister and Goldenloin in a romantic relationship, not just for the obvious representation reason, but also because it reminds young queer people that they are not immune to learning to be prejudiced, as both characters are throughout the movie. No one bats an eye at a relationship between two men, but they still hate Nimona because she's different even from that, and I think that pretty explicitly calls out the "LGB without the T" crowd, who are perpetuating the cycle of hate when you would hope they would be the most understanding and empathetic.

I had to explain to my kids while we were watching it (the two I watched it with are 7 and 10) why that part made me cry so hard and they ended up getting a bit teary eyed as well. I've raised them in a very open minded way where all people and all love is accepted and seeing it really open their eyes to what people, and their own friends, can be going through. They're such empathetic kids with huge hearts and that's something that i am so unbelievably proud of.

This has honestly become my favorite movie and book, it really makes me feel seen. As someone who is gender-fluid, Nimona is so relatable for me and such an amazing character. The amount of times the movie and graphic novel made me cry can’t even be counted.

There's so much to this movie that I really enjoyed and loved but also really resonate with on its messages and themes and allegories. While I'm not LGBTQ, there's a lot to Nimona that I can deeply relate to and get what's its putting down as a young Black woman in America and having to deal with systematic racism or other froms of prejudices and racial profiling and other bullshit because of being both black and a woman. Especially amongst Nerd culture or within Geek fandom circles. This movie hits on so many levels that I think any minority person can relate too on some level.

I am a queer neurospicy person who just got diagnosed with BPD. The moment where Nimona talks about how she doesn't know whats worse, the fact that everyone likes to kill her or the fact that she kinda wants them to hit me hard in the feels. Plus her impulsive behavior and her frequent shapeshifting (dissociating) makes it kinda clear to me that all of this could also be an analogy to Borderline disorder. It makes sense to me because this often comes from rejection in early childhood (the flashbacks) and beeing not accepted who or what you are. BPD manifests itself in early adulthood as selfhatred, impulsive behavior, anger or agression, mishehavior, suicidal thoughts or actions and above all emotional disregulation. This might be the best BPD representation I ever came upon.
As someone who was already a fan of the graphic novel, I thought they did a fantastic job with the movie! And I'm so glad you and many other people enjoy it as well!

"I don't know what's scarier.. The fact everyone in this kigdom wants to run a sword through my heart.. Or that sometimes I want to let them" broke me and made me sob so hard I'm "not" queer (questioning mostly) but seeing the way LGBTQ+ people are being treated now a days just scares me..

You get it ♥ What I love about this movie is that it tells a story of queerness and acceptance, but goes beyond the personnal level of "oh, this person used to reject a queer character, and now they're cool with it, hooray" and shows the political aspect of it, how hate is taught and institutionalized in a society, and how the only way to change that is to question our institutions and our beliefs. Very few stories get that full picture !

Love Nimona so much! Her chaotic energy and vibes, but she's willing to be accepted. She's the perfect soul that'll tell you that it's hard but everything will be okay along with your friends. I felt so happy that she found someone that loved her for who she is.

Love the movie. It speaks to me so much as a queer person who isn't exactly accepted by most of my family. Also, is that the SpiritFarer OST in the background? If not, wondering what it is.

in the scene where nimona falls into balloster's open arms, if you look, it shows in the background all the screens of the same thing. him holding her. the screens of the system that portrays her very being as wrong surround them, and even if the moment is portrayed as evil by the media, it surrounds them with a reminder of how much they care for each other, despite how "wrong" it may seem. she is surrounded with love and acceptance and belonging, just because of one person; one person that touched her. touched her in a way that no one had ever dared to. i was bawling my eyes out at this movie, harder than i had in months lmao

I actually watched the movie yesterday with my bf. We’re both pan and I’m non-binary tho with more masc pronouns. So while watching in the beginning I said that boldheart is had lots of the things that people are prejudiced against. He’s lower class, a person of color, gay, and of course I was gonna say “but at least he isn’t disabled.” Then his arm got chopped off which added to the list. Of course the movie didn’t play into all these factors but still they made the main character other than Nimona have lots of things that people in our society hate. I really enjoyed the movie even tho I annoyed the hell out of my boyfriend while watching it. He enjoyed it as well.

You know what I say? I bet ND Stevenson and Dana Terrace would be good friends. Both of them have as a protagonist, the classic “character that stick out like a sore thumb”, the one who is misunderstood by an uncaring, never-ending satisfyed society full of close minded jerks, (because that what society loves, it expects to take, and take, and take, but it doesn’t give the individual any rest, nor respect in return, just for the sake of its power). Both of them invert the theme of “Light is good, and Dark is bad”. Any character associated with light turned out to be an authoritarian, suffocating and hypocritical bigot; while the ones who is remotely are associated with dark (like demons, monsters or overall weirdness) are more accepting to people’s authentic selves, warts and all. Even their protagonists have a “demonic form” at some point. In the light, there’s no space for the individual, for flaws nor for mistakes, only for the community and the impossible goal of reaching perfection, but in the dark, since nobody can see you, you can be yourself and express yourself with no fear of judgment. And finally, both Stevenson and Terrace always looked bigotry and people who use religion to justify their awful crimes with disgust at best, and with unapologetic hatred at worst (although Stevenson has a much more personal reason for it, since he grew up in a fundamentalist religious environment before moving into gay circles and coming out as lesbian, and eventually as transmasculine). It doesn’t help that some of the villains of their stories are based on real life monsters, such as Matthew Hopkins, a.k.a. The Witch Hunter Finder (Terrace), and Jim Jones, leader of a suicide cult (Stevenson).

Nimona's story is such a great deconstruction of how societies use scapegoats to alienate and degrade people they deem as "monsters". Also, how these societies can brainwash masses of regular people to physically threaten the people they deem as "monsters". Nimona throughout the story is always questioning how people demonize others because it always leads to suffering and death. I mean Nimona literally had to almost unalive herself, then throw herself at a big-fucking-gun for everyone in the kingdom to see her humanity and value. She shouldn't have to sacrifice herself for us to see her humanity or value, but unfortunately, she had to because sometimes that's what it takes for ignorant people to change their minds. As a side note, Nimona's shape-shifting can be seen as an allegory for transgender and gender-fluid/gender-non-conforming people. Moreover, Ballister is a reflection of working-class people "pulling themselves up from their bootstraps" in a system with a lot of nepotism and socioeconomic barriers, in which they struggle for everything and are heavily criticized. The whole motive for the director was to uphold the very strict and authoritarian government where people in power are never elected for their merits or values, but for who their ancestors were. She wanted to keep the power within the "noble families" who descended from the original knights that made up the myth of Gloreth and "the monster".

Im not sure it's acceptance thats needed, everywhere you look, 'ACCEPT ME' is posted on billboards, commercials, etc. I think it understanding is what we need. People are shoving their own agendas down everyones throats so much that no one is able to sit down and understand what they truly are, what they truly want, etc. They are more concerned with 'do i match everyone else?'
